Shiluach Haken and the Reward of Long Life

Kabbalistic and Chassidic sources explore the spiritual mechanics connecting the mitzvah of sending away the mother bird—a seemingly minor commandment—to the significant reward of long life. These texts examine how the act preserves cosmic harmony and cleaves the observer to divine goodness.

What the sources say

The Tikkunei Zohar (Tikkunei Zohar 23a) reveals a cosmic dynamic at work: when Israel performs shiluach haken and the mother bird is driven away while the young cry out, an angel named Sandalphon — appointed over the souls called 'birds' — pleads before the blessed Holy One on behalf of those souls, invoking the pasuk that His mercy is upon all His works (Tikkunei Zohar 23a), and Metatron similarly pleads for the spirits that fly into human beings — so the commandment, by triggering this angelic advocacy for souls, generates an outpouring of divine mercy toward the one who performed it.

On a more philosophical plane, Tiferet Yisrael 41 explains that sending away the mother rather than destroying the nest entirely is an act of preserving the existence of the world — the mother survives to build another nest — and since existence itself is the good (as each day of creation was sealed with 'ki tov'), one who clings to the perpetuation of existence thereby clings to the good and becomes deserving of existence itself, which is precisely what arichus yamim, long life, is — making the reward the direct, organic consequence of the deed (Tiferet Yisrael 41).

Tikkunei Zohar.23a:13

When Israel fulfills the commandment of sending away the mother bird, the upper mother (Binah) ascends and the children cry out, prompting the appointed angel over the birds to advocate before God for mercy on his charges, just as the other angelic overseers of the celestial realms advocate for their respective charges when Israel observes the commandments.

And furthermore: (Deut. 22:7) You shall surely send... Come and see: There is an angel appointed over birds – which are souls that are called ‘birds’ – and Sandalphon is its name. And when Israel fulfils this commandment of sending the nest, and Mother goes wandering, and the children cry out, it the angel instructs merit over its birds, and it says to the blessed Holy One: ‘And yet it is written of You: (Ps. 145:9) ... and His mercy is upon all His works – so why have You decreed of this bird, that it should be driven from its nest?’ And so does Metatron instruct merit for its ‘birds’, which are the spirits that fly-forth into humans. For such ‘souls’ are from the throne, and from this ḥayah are ‘spirits’, and from ophan are ‘animating-souls’, and they are in the domains of: ‘Creation’, ‘Formation’, ‘Making’. On Sabbath and Festivals, souls, spirits and animating-souls descend upon them, by way of ‘emanation’, which are the spirit of holiness from the 10 sephirot. And each appointed angel instructs merit over its own ‘birds’, which are the souls that fly-forth into humans. And when Israel fulfils this commandment of sending the nest, each appointed-one instructs merit over its ‘birds’. And what does the blessed Holy One do? He gathers all His forces, and says: ‘And is it [Var. thus] that every appointed-one over birds below, instructs merit upon its birds that it is appointed over? And yet no-one amongst you instructs merit upon My son who is Israel: (Ex. 4:22) My son, My firstborn Israel, and upon the Shekhinah who is in exile, Whose nest – which is Jerusalem – is destroyed.’ And His children in exile, are under the hand of harsh masters – the nations of the world, and there is no-one who requests mercy for them, and instructs merit upon them. At that time, the blessed Holy One ‘cries out’, and He says: (Is. 48:11) For My sake, for My sake, I shall act... (Ez. 20:14) ... and I shall act for the sake of My Name... and through this, mercy is aroused upon His Shekhinah, and upon His children in exile.

When one sends away the mother bird, one preserves the continuation of the world by ensuring the nest is not completely destroyed and the mother can build another; whoever maintains the world's existence cleaves to goodness, and since the world was established by God with the declaration "it is good," maintaining this existence—which is goodness itself—renders one worthy of that very existence, which is length of days, and thus the mitzvah receives the reward of "that it may go well with you and you may live long.
