Unity in Sacred Vessels: One Piece of Metal

וְעָשִׂ֥יתָ מְנֹרַ֖ת זָהָ֣ב טָה֑וֹר מִקְשָׁ֞ה תֵּעָשֶׂ֤ה הַמְּנוֹרָה֙ יְרֵכָ֣הּ וְקָנָ֔הּ גְּבִיעֶ֛יהָ כַּפְתֹּרֶ֥יהָ וּפְרָחֶ֖יהָ מִמֶּ֥נָּה יִהְיֽוּ׃

You shall make a lampstand of pure gold; the lampstand shall be made of hammered work; its base and its shaft, its cups, calyxes, and petals shall be of one piece.

וְזֶ֨ה מַעֲשֵׂ֤ה הַמְּנֹרָה֙ מִקְשָׁ֣ה זָהָ֔ב עַד־יְרֵכָ֥הּ עַד־פִּרְחָ֖הּ מִקְשָׁ֣ה הִ֑וא כַּמַּרְאֶ֗ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר הֶרְאָ֤ה יְהֹוָה֙ אֶת־מֹשֶׁ֔ה כֵּ֥ן עָשָׂ֖ה אֶת־הַמְּנֹרָֽה׃ {פ}

Now this is how the lampstand was made: it was hammered work of gold, hammered from base to petal. According to the pattern that GOD had shown Moses, so was the lampstand made.

וְעָשִׂ֛יתָ שְׁנַ֥יִם כְּרֻבִ֖ים זָהָ֑ב מִקְשָׁה֙ תַּעֲשֶׂ֣ה אֹתָ֔ם מִשְּׁנֵ֖י קְצ֥וֹת הַכַּפֹּֽרֶת׃

Make two cherubim of gold—make them of hammered work—at the two ends of the cover.

עֲשֵׂ֣ה לְךָ֗ שְׁתֵּי֙ חֲצֽוֹצְרֹ֣ת כֶּ֔סֶף מִקְשָׁ֖ה תַּעֲשֶׂ֣ה אֹתָ֑ם וְהָי֤וּ לְךָ֙ לְמִקְרָ֣א הָֽעֵדָ֔ה וּלְמַסַּ֖ע אֶת־הַֽמַּחֲנֽוֹת׃

Have two silver trumpets made; make them of hammered work. They shall serve you to summon the community and to set the divisions in motion.

תָּנוּ רַבָּנַן: מְנוֹרָה הָיְתָה בָּאָה מִן הָעֶשֶׁת וּמִן הַזָּהָב. עֲשָׂאָהּ מִן הַגְּרוּטָאוֹת – פְּסוּלָה, מִשְּׁאָר מִינֵי מַתָּכוֹת – כְּשֵׁרָה. מַאי שְׁנָא מִן הַגְּרוּטָאוֹת פְּסוּלָה? דִּכְתִיב ״מִקְשָׁה״ וַהֲוָיָה, שְׁאָר מִינֵי מַתָּכוֹת נָמֵי זָהָב וַהֲוָיָה! ״מִקְשָׁה״ דְּסֵיפָא לְמַאי אֲתָא? לְמַעוֹטֵי חֲצוֹצְרוֹת, דְּתַנְיָא: חֲצוֹצְרוֹת הָיוּ בָּאִים מִן הָעֶשֶׁת, מִן הַכֶּסֶף. עֲשָׂאָם מִן הַגְּרוּטָאוֹת – כְּשֵׁרִים, מִשְּׁאָר מִינֵי מַתָּכוֹת – פְּסוּלִים. וּמַאי שְׁנָא מִשְּׁאָר מִינֵי מַתָּכוֹת פְּסוּלִים, דִּכְתִיב ״כֶּסֶף״ וַהֲוָיָה, מִן הַגְּרוּטָאוֹת נָמֵי ״מִקְשָׁה״ וַהֲוָיָה? מִיעֵט רַחֲמָנָא גַּבֵּי מְנוֹרָה ״מִקְשָׁה הִיא״ – ״הִיא״, וְלָא חֲצוֹצְרוֹת.

The Sages taught (Tosefta, Ḥullin 1:18): The Candelabrum was fashioned from a complete block [ha’eshet] and from gold. If they fashioned it from fragments [hagerutaot] of gold then it is unfit, but if they fashioned it from other types of metal rather than gold, it is fit. The Gemara asks: What is different about a Candelabrum made from fragments of gold, that it is rendered unfit? As it is written with regard to it: “Their knobs and their branches shall be of one piece with it, the whole of it one beaten work of pure gold” (Exodus 25:36), employing the term “beaten [miksha]” and a term of being, indicating that it is an indispensable requirement. But accordingly, a Candelabrum fashioned from other types of metal should be rendered unfit as well, since the verse states that it is made from gold and uses a term of being. The Gemara asks: For what purpose does the term “beaten work” that is repeated again in the latter clause of the verse come? The Gemara answers: It comes to exclude the trumpets, teaching that they are fit even if they were not fashioned from a single block. As it is taught in a baraita: The silver trumpets that Moses was commanded to fashion in the wilderness were to be fashioned from a complete block and from silver. If one fashioned them from fragments they are fit, but if he fashioned them from other types of metal then they are unfit. The Gemara asks: And what is different about trumpets made from other types of metal that they are rendered unfit? As it is written with regard to the trumpets: “Make for yourself two trumpets of silver; of beaten work you shall make them; and they shall be for you for the calling of the congregation” (Numbers 10:2). The verse employs the terms silver and being, indicating that it is an indispensable requirement. But accordingly, trumpets fashioned from fragments should be rendered unfit as well, since the verse employs the terms beaten work and being. The Gemara answers: The Merciful One excludes the trumpets when it states with regard to the Candelabrum: “It was beaten work” (Numbers 8:4), indicating that it alone, but not the trumpets, was beaten work.

וּמִצְוַת עֲשֵׂה לִהְיוֹת הַלְוִיִּם פְּנוּיִין וּמוּכָנִין לַעֲבוֹדַת הַמִּקְדָּשׁ בֵּין רָצוּ בֵּין שֶׁלֹּא רָצוּ שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר (במדבר יח כג) "וְעָבַד הַלֵּוִי הוּא אֶת עֲבֹדַת אֹהֶל מוֹעֵד". וּבֶן לֵוִי שֶׁקִּבֵּל עָלָיו כָּל מִצְוֹת לְוִיָּה חוּץ מִדָּבָר אֶחָד אֵין מְקַבְּלִין אוֹתוֹ עַד שֶׁיְּקַבֵּל אֶת כֻּלָּן:

The descendants of Levi were singled out for service in the Sanctuary, as [Deuteronomy 10:8] states: "At that time, God separated the tribe of Levi." It is a positive commandment for the Levites to be free and prepared for the service of the Sanctuary, whether they desire to do so or not as [Numbers 18:23] states: "And the Levite shall perform the service of the tent of meeting." When a Levite accepts all the mitzvot of the Levites with the exception of one matter, he is not accepted unless he accepts them all.

מקשה תיעשה המנורה. שֶׁלֹּא יַעֲשֶׂנָּה חֻלְיוֹת וְלֹא יַעֲשֶׂה קָנֶיהָ וְנֵרוֹתֶיהָ אֵבָרִים אֵבָרִים וְאַחַר כָּךְ יַדְבִּיקֵם, כְּדֶרֶךְ הַצּוֹרְפִים שֶׁקּוֹרִין שולד"יר בְּלַעַז, אֶלָּא כֻלָּהּ בָּאָה מֵחֲתִיכָה אַחַת, וּמַקִּישׁ בַּקֻּרְנָס וְחוֹתֵךְ בִּכְלִי הָאֻמָּנוּת וּמַפְרִיד הַקָּנִים אֵילָךְ וָאֵילָךְ: מקשה. תַּרְגּוּמוֹ נְגִיד, לְשׁוֹן הַמְשָׁכָה, שֶׁמַּמְשִׁיךְ אֶת הָאֵבָרִים מִן הָעֶשֶׁת לְכָאן וּלְכָאן בְּהַקָּשַׁת הַקֻּרְנָס, וּלְשׁוֹן מִקְשָׁה מַכַּת קֻרְנָס, בטדי"ץ בְּלַעַז, כְּמוֹ דָּא לְדָא נָקְשָׁן (דניאל ה'):

מקשה תיעשה המנורה OF BEATEN WORK SHALL THE CANDELABRUM BE MADE — i. e. one should not make it of separate pieces nor shall one make its branches or its lamps as separate limb — a kind of work called souder in old French, Engl, to solder, but is was to be made in its entirety of a single mass of gold. He (who made it) beat it with the hammer and cut away with the implements of his craft thus making the branches spread out in this direction and in that (cf. Sifrei Bamidbar 61:1). מקשה — This word is translated in the Targum by נגיד, an expression for “drawing out;” he renders it thus because the parts of the candle-stick were drawn from the lump in this direction and in that by the blow of the hammer. The term מקשה denotes knocking with the hammer — batediz in old French — as the verb in (Daniel 5:6) “and his knees knocked (נקשן) one against another”.

אַחַר סִדּוּר שְׁנֵי הַכְּתָרִים, וְהֵם כֶּתֶר תּוֹרָה בָּאָרוֹן וְכֶתֶר מַלְכוּת בַּשֻּׁלְחָן, סִדֵּר עִנְיַן מְנוֹרָה כֻּלָּהּ מִקְשָׁה אַחַת וְאוֹר נֵרוֹתֶיהָ אֶחָד, כְּאָמְרוֹ:

their function is singular, one of unification, just as the Menorah from which they emanate was cast out of a single chunk of gold, something unified.

וּמָה רָאִיתָ לְרַבּוֹת אֶת נֵרֹתֶיהָ וּלְהוֹצִיא גְּבִיעֶיהָ כַּפְתּוֹרֶיהָ וּפְרָחֶיהָ, אַחַר שֶׁרִבָּה הַכָּתוּב וּמִעֵט, מְרַבֶּה אֲנִי אֶת נֵרֹתֶיהָ שֶׁהֵן נַעֲשִׂין עִמָּהּ, וּמוֹצִיא אֲנִי גְּבִיעֶיהָ כַּפְתּוֹרֶיהָ וּפְרָחֶיהָ שֶׁאֵין נַעֲשִׂין עִמָּהּ. וּמָה רָאִיתָ לְרַבּוֹת מַלְקָחֶיהָ וּמַחְתּוֹתֶיהָ וּלְהוֹצִיא אֶת הַצְּבָתִים וְאֶת הַמַּלְקְטָאוֹת, אַחַר שֶׁרִבָּה הַכָּתוּב וּמִעֵט, מְרַבֶּה אֲנִי מַלְקָחֶיהָ וּמַחְתּוֹתֶיהָ שֶׁהֵן מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁין עִמָּהּ, וּמוֹצִיא אֲנִי אֶת הַצְּבָתִים וְאֶת הַמַּלְקְטָאוֹת שֶׁאֵין מִשְׁתַּמְּשִׁין עִמָּהּ.

Scripture therefore says, it [he shall make ‘it’]. I might think I am also to include the tzvatim (tongs) and the snuffers; Scripture therefore says, [Of a talent of pure gold he shall make] it.

וְעָשִׂיתָ מְנֹרַת זָהָב טָהוֹר. פֵּרֵשׁ רַשִׁ״י שֶׁהָיָה מֹשֶׁה מִתְקַשֶּׁה בָּהּ, אָמַר לוֹ הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא: הַשְׁלֵךְ כִּכַּר זָהָב לְתוֹךְ הָאוּר וְהִיא נַעֲשֵׂית מֵאֵלֶיהָ. לְכָךְ נֶאֱמַר ״תֵּעָשֶׂה הַמְּנוֹרָה״ (שמות כה:לא) וְלֹא כְּתִיב ״תַּעֲשֶׂה״, וּלְסוֹף נֶאֱמַר ״כִּכַּר זָהָב טָהוֹר יַעֲשֶׂה אֹתָהּ״ (שמות כה:לט) וְלֹא פֵּרֵשׁ מִי יַעֲשֶׂה אוֹתָהּ, אֶלָּא הַכִּכָּר עַצְמוֹ יַעֲשֶׂה אוֹתָהּ, דְּהַיְינוּ מֵאֵלֶיהָ. וְהָיָה עִנְיַן קִשּׁוּי זֶה לְפִי שֶׁנַּעֲשֵׂית מֵחֲתִיכָה אַחַת, עַל כֵּן הָיָה צָרִיךְ בִּמְלָאכָה זוֹ עֵזֶר אֱלֹהִי, וְהָיָה דּוֹמֶה כְּאִלּוּ נַעֲשֵׂית מֵאֵלֶיהָ, כִּי לָא חָלֵי וְלָא מַרְגִּישׁ גַּבְרָא דְּמָרֵיהּ סַיְּעֵיהּ.

“And you shall make a menorah of pure gold.” Rashi explains that Moses found it difficult to understand [how to make the menorah], so the Holy One, blessed be He, said to him, “Cast a talent of gold into the fire, and it will be made by itself.” Therefore it says the menorah shall be made [passive form] and not “you shall make” [active form]. And finally it states from one talent of gold he shall make it, without specifying who shall make it, but rather [implying that] the talent itself shall make it, meaning it will form by itself. This difficulty [in understanding] was because it had to be made from a single piece, therefore divine assistance was needed for this task, and it appeared as if it was made by itself, for “a person does not worry nor feel distress when his Master assists him.”

תֵּיעָשֶׂה הַמְּנוֹרָה. צָרִיךְ לָדַעַת לָמָּה הֻצְרַךְ לוֹמַר ״תֵּיעָשֶׂה הַמְּנוֹרָה״, וּבִמְנָחוֹת פֶּרֶק הַקּוֹמֵץ רַבָּה (מנחות כח,א) דָּרְשׁוּ ״תֵּיעָשֶׂה״ לְרַבּוֹת שְׁאָר הַמַּתָּכוֹת. וּלְפִי זֶה דִּקְדֵּק לוֹמַר ״תֵּיעָשֶׂה״ וְלֹא ״תַּעֲשֶׂה״, כִּי בִּימֵי מֹשֶׁה לֹא הָיָה צֹרֶךְ לָזֶה כִּי שֶׁל זָהָב עָשׂוּ, וּבַמִּדְבָּר לֹא הֻצְרְכוּ לַעֲשׂוֹת אַחֶרֶת.

תיעשה המנורה, the Lampstand shall be made. Why did the Torah need to write these words at all? Was it not enough to write: "you shall construct a Lampstand made of gold?" Our sages in Menachot 28 comment that the word תיעשה allows for the fact that if necessary the Lampstand could be constructed of other metals. The passive form of תיעשה rather than תעשה, "you shall make," is justified then, seeing that in Moses' time there was no need to take advantage of the permission to construct the Lampstand of inferior materials.

והכרובים לא הי' צריך לכתוב שהם של זהב טהור כיון שהם מקשה מגוף הכפרת והכפרת היה זהב טהור א"כ גם הכרובים הם זהב טהור כמו"ש רבינו בפ"ג הל"י מהלכות בית הבחירה גבי נרות המנורה יעו"ש.

ומפני שהתורה היא סדר כל העולם, כל דבר שהוא מסודר הוא דבר אחד מקושר, כמו שהיא התורה היא סדר אחד, כי התורה אחת היא. ומורה זה כי העולם מסודר יחד, עד שהעולם הוא אחד, כי סדר העולם היא התורה, שהיא סדר אחד לגמרי, כי התורה היא אחת.

"וזאת התורה אשר שם משה לפני בני ישראל" (דברים ד, מד). הכתוב הזה רוצה לומר, כי התורה חפץ מונח, כל הרוצה לזכות בה - יזכה בה. ולכך לא אמר 'אשר שם לבני ישראל', רק "לפני בני ישראל". כמו דבר המונח לפני[הם], כל הרוצה לזכות זוכה בה.

ויקחו לי תרומה (כה, ב) ופי' רש"י לי לשמי. וי"ל מה בעי רש"י בזה, וגם שאין לו שחר.

תפלתו פירש התדבקותו בהקב"ה עגולה פירש פעמים שהוא דבוק בקב"ה ופעמים אינו כמו גלגל שמתגלגל מסתמא אינו מקושר בקב"ה אינו מצוה לשון התחברות כמו צוותא.

Similarly, the Holy One, blessed be He, takes pleasure due to the actions of Israel, fattening the bones, meaning that He nourishes and delights His own essence in the chamber, which is He Himself.
