What the sources say
The Gemara Sanhedrin 97a-99a describes in detail the signs that will precede and accompany the coming of Mashiach — a generation in which Torah scholars diminish, troubles multiply, and within the final seven-year cycle, there will be famine, moral collapse, and escalating decrees — painting a picture of turbulent preconditions rather than a fixed calendar date.
A similar portrait of upheaval appears in Sotah 49b, which teaches that in the era approaching Mashiach, impudence will increase and prices will soar, and in Daniel 12:1-4, which describes an unprecedented time of trouble before the rescue of God's people — with the angel instructing Daniel to seal the book "until the time of the end."
The reason no precise date can be given is stated plainly by the Radak (Malachi 3:1): because the end-time was not revealed and the words of Daniel were sealed and closed until the time of the end, Mashiach will come suddenly, and no person will know the day of his arrival before he comes.
The Rambam Mishneh Torah, Melachim and Wars 12:1-2 adds a sequential outline — a prophet (identified with Elijah) will arise before the war of Gog and Magog to prepare Israel's hearts, and that war itself will open the Messianic era — while Tanya, Iggeret HaTeshuvah 11:2 offers a different angle: that were Israel not to repeat its transgressions after seeking forgiveness, redemption would come immediately.

The psalm speaks of God arising and having mercy on Zion at the appointed time, when the nations and kings fear the name of Hashem. It frames redemption as tied to a divinely fixed 'time to favor her.'

Sotah 49b
This passage describes the deteriorating spiritual state preceding the footsteps of Mashiach, including social and moral breakdown, and concludes with the hope that the Messiah will come amid decline. It is one of the classic Chazal descriptions of the end times.

Berakhot 4a:14
The gemara records David's request that the righteous not fail and that redemption come 'at the proper time,' and also cites the principle that one who waits for the redemption is rewarded. It reflects the idea of a divinely timed geulah coupled with human anticipation.

With regard to David’s statement, “Keep my soul, for I am pious,” the Gemara asks: Did David call himself pious? Isn’t it written: “If I had not [luleh] believed to look upon the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living” (Psalms 27:13). The dots that appear over the word luleh in the text indicate doubt and uncertainty of his piety, and whether he was deserving of a place in the land of the living (see Avot DeRabbi Natan 34). In the name of Rabbi Yosei, it was taught in a Tosefta: Why do dots appear over the word luleh, as if there are some reservations? Because David said before the Holy One, Blessed be He: Master of the Universe. I have every confidence in You that You grant an excellent reward to the righteous in the World-to-Come since God’s ultimate goodness is manifest in the land of eternal life, but I still harbor uncertainty with regard to myself, and I do not know whether or not I definitely have a portion among them. In any case, apparently David was uncertain whether or not he deserved to receive a portion of God’s reward for the righteous; how, then, could he characterize himself as pious? The Gemara responds: His concern does not prove anything, as King David knew that he was pious. He was simply concerned lest a transgression that he might commit in the future will cause him to lose his opportunity to look upon the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.

This sugya gathers the classic statements about the end of days, including warnings against calculating the date of redemption and teachings that the generation's merit or repentance affects the coming of Mashiach. One should not presume that the Messianic king must work miracles and wonders, bring about new phenomena in the world, resurrect the dead, or perform other similar deeds. This is definitely not true. Proof can be brought from the fact that Rabbi Akiva, one of the greater Sages of the Mishnah, was one of the supporters of King Bar Kozibah and would describe him as the Messianic king. He and all the Sages of his generation considered him to be the Messianic king until he was killed because of sins. Once he was killed, they realized that he was not the Mashiach. The Sages did not ask him for any signs or wonders. The main thrust of the matter is: This Torah, its statutes and its laws, are everlasting. We may not add to them or detract from them. If a king will arise from the House of David who diligently contemplates the Torah and observes its mitzvot as prescribed by the Written Law and the Oral Law as David, his ancestor, will compel all of Israel to walk in (the way of the Torah) and rectify the breaches in its observance, and fight the wars of God, we may, with assurance, consider him Mashiach. If he succeeds in the above, builds the Temple in its place, and gathers the dispersed of Israel, he is definitely the Mashiach. He will then improve the entire world, motivating all the nations to serve God together, as Tzephaniah 3:9 states: 'I will transform the peoples to a purer language that they all will call upon the name of God and serve Him with one purpose.'

Our Sages taught: "There will be no difference between the current age and the Messianic era except the emancipation from our subjugation to the gentile kingdoms." The simple interpretation of the prophets' words appear to imply that the war of Gog and Magog will take place at the beginning of the Messianic age. Before the war of Gog and Magog, a prophet will arise to inspire Israel to be upright and prepare their hearts, as Malachi 3:22 states: 'Behold, I am sending you Elijah.' He will not come to declare the pure, impure, or to declare the impure, pure. He will not dispute the lineage of those presumed to be of proper pedigree, nor will he validate the pedigree of those whose lineage is presumed blemished. Rather, he will establish peace within the world as ibid. 3:24 continues: 'He will turn the hearts of the fathers to the children." There are some Sages who say that Elijah's coming will precede the coming of the Mashiach. All these and similar matters cannot be definitely known by man until they occur for these matters are undefined in the prophets' words and even the wise men have no established tradition regarding these matters except their own interpretation of the verses. Therefore, there is a controversy among them regarding these matters. Regardless of the debate concerning these questions, neither the order of the occurrence of these events or their precise detail are among the fundamental principles of the faith. A person should not occupy himself with the Aggadot and homiletics concerning these and similar matters, nor should he consider them as essentials, for study of them will neither bring fear or love of God. Similarly, one should not try to determine the appointed time for Mashiach's coming. Our Sages declared: 'May the spirits of those who attempt to determine the time of Mashiach's coming expire!' Rather, one should await and believe in the general conception of the matter as explained.

For this reason, in every Shemonah Esrei, the moment we plead, “Forgive us…” we conclude, “Blessed are You, L–rd, gracious One, who pardons abundantly.” Without the certainty of pardon this would be a case of doubtful blessing, which we do not recite lest it be a blessing in vain. But there is no doubt here whatsoever, for we have asked, “Pardon us, forgive us.” Furthermore, were we not to repeat our transgressions we would be immediately redeemed, in accordance with the blessing we recite, “Blessed are You, L–rd, Redeemer of Israel.”
