Q — Why did the future leader of Israel grow up not in his parents' home but in the house of Pharaoh?

A — Ibn Ezra opens with humility — "מחשבות ה' עמקו, ומי יוכל לעמוד בסודו" — but then offers two answers. (1) Internal: a leader's soul must be naturally "על מדרגה העליונה." A person raised in a slave-house develops a slave's soul, with bowed head and meek heart — he cannot lead. Growing up in royalty cultivated the courage Moshe later showed in killing the Egyptian and rescuing the daughters of Yitro. Many others saw the same injustice; only one with a kingly soul ACTS. (2) External: had Moshe grown up among his brethren, they would have known him as "one of them" — "כי יחשבוהו כאחד מהם" — and would not have heeded him. The princely upbringing gave him the standing to be obeyed. The methodological gem: even where Ibn Ezra concedes "מי יוכל לעמוד בסודו," he still offers ta'amim — the question isn't illegitimate just because the answer is partial.
