The passage states that a ox refers to Mashiach ben Yosef, whose function is to remove evil from the foolish heart through fear and strength, as the evil inclination gives the impure forces power over Israel; a donkey refers to Melech HaMashiach, whose function is to bring holiness and Torah into the wise person's heart, and Yosef is explained as one whose quality is fear and strength to be a warrior who conquers his inclination.
ועז"א ויהי לי שור וחמור שנדרש במד"ר שור זה משוח מלחמה והיינו משיח בן יוסף שעסקו היראה להוריק הרע מלב כסיל שע"י היצה"ר יש כח בקליפה לשלוט על ישראל. וז"ש בב"ר שאין עשו נופל אלא ביד בניה של רחל. וחמור מלך המשיח שעסק שלו יהיה להכניס קדושה ותורה בלב חכם לימינו. וכן דרשו שור זה יוסף שמדתו היראה והגבורה להיות גבור הכובש את יצרו.
