Bnei Gad and Reuven's Misplaced Priorities

Classical sources examine how Bnei Gad and Reuven reversed their priorities by requesting to build enclosures for livestock before cities for their families, illustrating a fundamental ethical failing of valuing possessions over people.

What the sources say

The foundational Chazal on this question is Midrash Tanchuma, Matot 7, which identifies Bnei Reuven and Bnei Gad as those who made "the chief thing subordinate and the subordinate thing chief" — because they cherished their possessions more than their own persons, mentioning sheepfolds before cities for their children.

Rashi (Bamidbar 32:16) codifies this same teaching: the tribes showed they cared more for their property than for their sons and daughters by placing their cattle before their children, and Moshe corrects them by insisting that they first build cities for their families and only afterward enclosures for their flocks.

Midrash Tanchuma, Matot 7

Bnei Reuven and Bnei Gad made the principal thing secondary and the secondary thing principal by loving their possessions more than their own bodies, as evidenced by their request to build enclosures for their livestock first and only afterward cities for their children.

Rashi on Numbers 32:16

Rashi highlights the pastoral wealth that motivated Reuven and Gad and connects their request to a pattern of choosing material advantage. His comments set up the rebuke that follows by underscoring the practical basis of their choice.

WE WILL BUILD [SHEEP FOLDS] FOR OUR CATTLE HERE — They paid more regard to their property than to their sons and daughters, because they mentioned their cattle before their children. Moses said to them, “Not so! Make the chief thing the chief thing and what is subordinate subordinate. First build cities for your little ones and afterwards enclosures for your flocks” (cf. v. 24) (Midrash Tanchuma, Matot 7).
