Why we charge

The Torah is free. The research is what you're paying for.

Let's say it plainly: the sources belong to everyone. They're free on Sefaria, and Mekoros keeps them that way — we link out to the primary text, never put it behind a paywall, and never charge you to read a word of Torah.

What Mekoros actually does is research. It searches the classical and contemporary literature, finds the sources that speak to your idea, verifies every one against the primary text before it shows you a single citation, and frames them into a sheet you can teach from. That's work — the kind that would take a person hours in the beis medrash.

Charging for that labor is as old as Torah itself. A sofer charges for the writing, not for the words; a magid shiur is paid for the hours of preparation, not for the Torah he teaches. We charge for the assistant's time, not for the sources it finds.

Running that assistant costs real money every time it works. A subscription is what lets us keep a genuinely free tier open for students, kollel, and anyone just starting out — and keep building the verification that makes Mekoros worth trusting in the first place: no fabricated citations, no guessed references, only sources whose real text we confirmed.

If the price is ever a barrier and the work matters to you, write to us. We'd rather you have the tool.
