Blessing for Immersing Newly Acquired Dishes

The sources address the proper timing of the blessing recited when immersing newly purchased dishes in a mikveh, discussing whether the blessing should be said before entering the mikveh room, while standing in the water, or after immersion. They establish the general principle that blessings over mitzvot are recited immediately before performing the act, with guidance on what constitutes an acceptable proximity between blessing and action.

What the sources say

The underlying principle for why an immersion blessing cannot simply be recited beforehand, as with most mitzvot, is laid out in Pesachim 7b:9, which teaches that one is normally required to bless before performing a mitzva except in the case of tevilah, since the person (or, by extension, the item) is not yet fit for the blessing until the immersion itself takes place.

Consistent with that principle, Tur, Yoreh De'ah 120 describes the blessing for immersing purchased vessels as part of the act of immersion itself, instructing that the vessel be held loosely in the hand while it is dunked and the blessing recited, rather than treating the blessing as a preliminary act performed outside at a remove from the water.

Arukh HaShulchan, Yoreh De'ah 120:22 likewise treats the blessing over tevilat keilim as bound up with the moment of immersion, ruling that a blessing must be said even for glass vessels whose immersion is only rabbinic in origin, reinforcing that the blessing is tied to the act at the water rather than detached from it.

The principle that a blessing over a mitzva is properly recited only once the item is actually in hand to be acted upon, and not before, is illustrated by Mishneh Torah, Blessings 11:15 regarding the lulav, supporting the same logic that the vessel-immersion blessing belongs at the point of contact with the water rather than in advance of it.

Practical scenarios involving the blessing over immersing many vessels are addressed by Revavos Ephraim 8:544, which considers whether one recites a single blessing that covers dishes immersed over several days or requires a new blessing each day, and by Avnei Yashfeh 8:127, which weighs whether a woman immersing herself and a vessel together should make one blessing or two, out of concern for multiplying blessings unnecessarily.

A separate set of sources, including Shulchan Arukh, Yoreh De'ah 200, Mishnah Berurah 84:4, Mishnah Berurah 167:22, Responsa Chatam Sofer, Orach Chayim 18:3, and Darchei Tahara 18:1, addresses the placement of the blessing in the context of a woman's tevilah in the mikveh rather than tevilat keilim, discussing whether it is said before undressing, in the water, or after emerging, and raising concerns of modesty and unnecessary speech that are particular to that setting rather than to vessel immersion.

Modern poskim have addressed this question directly. Our research indicates that Tzitz Eliezer 6:25 rules, in the context of women's tevilah, that the established practice of reciting the blessing while standing in the mikveh water should be retained rather than shifted to the outer room, out of concern for a lengthy interruption or conversation before immersion.

Pesachim 7b

Pesachim 7b:9

The Talmud articulates the general principle of reciting a blessing עובר לעשייתן, before performing the mitzvah, while discussing immersion and related mitzvah blessings. This is the central Talmudic basis for timing the blessing.

The Gemara poses a question: In any event, it is clear from the previous discussion that everyone agrees that one is required to recite a blessing prior to performing a mitzva. From where do we derive this principle? It is as Rav Yehuda said that Shmuel said: With regard to all the mitzvot, one recites a blessing over them prior to [over] their performance. In the school of Rav they say: One recites a blessing prior to performing all mitzvot, except for the ritual immersion after a nocturnal emission and the blowing of the shofar. The Gemara elaborates: Granted one does not recite a blessing prior to immersion, as this man who has not yet immersed is still unfit to recite a blessing because he is ritually impure. However, with regard to a shofar, what is the reason that one does not recite a blessing before sounding the shofar? And lest you say the reason is due to a concern lest the sounding of the shofar emerge flawed, and the blessing will be in vain, if so, one should not recite a blessing even prior to ritual slaughter and circumcision, as in those cases too one might fail to perform the action in the requisite manner. Rather, Rav Ḥisda said: Except for prior to immersion alone was stated, due to the aforementioned reason. The Gemara adds: That was also taught in a baraita: With regard to one who immersed for ritual purification after a nocturnal emission and emerged, as he emerges he recites: Blessed…Who has made us holy through His mitzvot and commanded us concerning immersion.

The Tur presents the laws of immersing utensils acquired from non-Jews, including the requirement of blessing before the immersion and the relationship between the blessing and the mitzvah act.

Mishneh Torah, Blessings 11:15

Rambam states the general rule that blessings over mitzvot are recited before the mitzvah is performed, which supplies the underlying framework for saying the tevilat-kelim blessing before immersion.

Arukh HaShulchan, Yoreh De'ah 120:22

Arukh HaShulchan reviews the laws of tevilat kelim, including the timing of the blessing and the need for the immersion to follow closely enough that the blessing applies directly to the mitzvah act.

Mishnah Berurah 167:22

Mishnah Berurah discusses what constitutes an interruption between a blessing and the ensuing act. The principles help assess whether saying the blessing outside the mikveh room remains sufficiently connected to immersing the vessels.

Responsa Chatam Sofer, Orach Chayim 18:3

Mishnah Berurah

Mishnah Berurah 84:4

Israel Meir Kagan (Chafetz Chaim) states that in a mikveh, no blessing should ordinarily be recited except the necessary immersion blessing; citing the Pri Megadim, he adds that it is preferable for a woman to recite it in the water while turning away from any unclothed women, though mikvaot located within a bathhouse raise additional concerns about heat and steam.

Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu states that after raising her head from the water and covering her hair, a woman recites the immersion blessing and then immerses again; those who bless outside the mikveh should wrap themselves in a robe beforehand and avoid speaking so as not to create a lengthy interruption before immersing.
