אבן עזרא
Ibn Ezra on Leviticus 7:38
Q — The closing pasuk of Korbanot says "אשר צוה ה' את משה בהר סיני... להקריב את קרבניהם לה' במדבר סיני" — but doesn't "בהר סיני" already mark the location? Why add "במדבר סיני"?
A — Ibn Ezra reads "במדבר סיני" as marking the place of OFFERING, not the place of command. The shocking implication: the wilderness generation offered korbanot only at midbar Sinai (50 days, from mishkan-erection on 1 Nissan to departure on 20 Iyar of year 2) — and never again until they entered Eretz Yisrael. No korban tamid in the years of wandering. Proof from Amos 5:25 "הזבחים ומנחה הגשתם לי במדבר ארבעים שנה" — read as a rhetorical הא התימה: you did NOT bring them. And practically: "מאין היה להם בכל יום חצי הין שמן זית... שני כבשים בני שנה בכל יום." They had no flocks in the dry wilderness. Only the Yom Kippur of year 2 was performed (proven from "ויעש כאשר צוה ה' את משה" in Acharei Mot); only one Pesach (Bamidbar 9); the next Pesach was at Gilgal after entering the Land (Yehoshua 5). Ibn Ezra concedes that Chazal (R' Akiva, Chagigah 6b) said the tribe of Levi did offer it: "ואם היא קבלה קבלנו, כי על דרך הפשט לא הקריבו" — if it's a kabbalah we accept it, but the peshat says they did not.
