Q — Leah's offspring are totaled at 33 ("כל נפש בניו ובנותיו שלשים ושלש") but the names listed add up only to 32. Chazal (cited by Rashi) said Yocheved bat Levi was born "between the walls" at the moment of entering Egypt, completing the 33. Ibn Ezra rejects this sharply: if such a miracle had occurred — Yocheved giving birth to Moshe at age 130 — the Torah would have explicitly publicized it as it did with Sarah at 90 ("התורה מעוניינת לפרסם ניסים"); the Torah's silence about the miracle is itself proof the miracle never happened.

A — Ibn Ezra's solution: Yaakov himself completes the count — "יעקב בחשבון וממנו יחל." Proof: verse 8 opens "ואלה שמות בני ישראל הבאים מצרימה יעקב ובניו" — Yaakov is explicitly included among "בני ישראל." The Torah speaks "אחר הרוב" — it groups by the majority even when one or two members don't strictly fit the descriptor (Binyamin in "ילד לו בפדן ארם" though born in Canaan; Menashe and Ephraim in "הבאה מצרימה" though born in Egypt). The principle reorders many difficult psukim. R' Avraham ben HaRambam in his own peirush calls Ibn Ezra's reading here "הנכון שבפירושים כולם."
