The Arizal's Central Mystical Innovations

These sources present the Arizal's foundational teachings on divine structure and cosmic process, including the contraction of infinite light (tzimtzum), the breaking of vessels (shevirat ha-kelim), the configuration of divine forms (partzufim), and the doctrine of spiritual repair (tikkun) that underlies creation and human spiritual work.

What the sources say

The foundational innovation threaded through the Ari's system is the doctrine of tzimtzum — the primordial contraction of the Infinite — as the precondition for all structured existence. Adir Bamarom, Beur Idra Rabba 95a articulates this most explicitly: "the two things that were the beginning of all existence were the tzimtzum and the extension of the Kav," and it is upon these two primordial acts that all governance and structure are rooted. Adir Bamarom, Beur Idra Rabba 25b likewise explains that the Reshimu (residual impression) remaining within the vacated space became the material for the Kelim, while the Kav itself supplied the inner essence (Atzmut) — a distinction that drives the entire Lurianic mapping of reality. Likkutei Maamarim, On Shimshon confirms this as distinctively the Arizal's contribution, noting that the concepts of Iggulim and Yosher (circular and linear light, corresponding to Ohr Makif and Ohr Penimi) derive from the Ari, flowing directly from the tzimtzum framework.

From tzimtzum the Ari constructs an elaborate architecture of worlds: Adam Kadmon and the four worlds of Atzilut, Beriyah, Yetzirah, and Asiyah form a descending chain in which each world is, as Sha'arei Kedusha, Part 3 puts it, "the soul for the next," and each replicates within itself the full structure of the Divine Name with its four letters and ten Sefirot — a fractal principle extending "even to the smallest creature in this lowly world." Sefer Etz Chaim 50:1 adds that Israel in the lowest world is purposefully designed to encompass all four worlds of ABYA together, so as to possess the power to perform the Birurim — the sorting of the sparks from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil across all four levels.

Central to this cosmological architecture is the doctrine of Shevirat HaKelim — the shattering of the primordial vessels — and the 288 sparks (Resh-Peh-Chet Nitzotzin) that fell and became embedded in the Kelipot. Sefer Etz Chaim 18:1 identifies these sparks with the verse "the earth was Tohu and Vohu," explaining that the seven kings who died are the Zu"N of Adam Kadmon, and that the 288 sparks are those that remained within the shattered vessels. Sefer Etz Chaim 11:1 traces the prior stage, describing how ten Nekudot (points) first emerged in the configuration of Akudim, then Nekudim, before proceeding toward Berudim — the sequential phases leading to the Shevirah. Sefer Etz Chaim 48:1 draws out the consequence: the Kelipot took hold precisely from the dross of those seven broken kings, and because the kings of Abba and Imma never descended into the world of Beriyah, only eleven Kelipot — corresponding to the letters Vav-Heh of the Divine Name — came into being.

The purpose of all this structure, in the Ari's system, is Tikkun — repair — and this gives rise to a novel and demanding theology of human action. Sefer Etz Chaim 1:1 opens by framing creation itself as necessitated by God's need, so to speak, to actualize His powers and Names through deed; without created worlds His greatness would remain unrealized. Sefer Etz Chaim 42:1 then explains that Keter functions as the indispensable intermediary between the Infinite Emanator and the emanated realm, likened to the primordial matter (Hyle) that contains the roots of all four elements in potential — neither pure Ayin nor defined being.

The doctrine of Gilgul (transmigration of souls) is the Ari's mechanism for how Tikkun actually proceeds through human history. Sha'ar HaGilgulim, Introduction 1 presents the soul's five-part structure — Nefesh, Ruach, Neshamah, Chayah, Yechidah (NRNCH"Y) — as corresponding to the four worlds of ABYA plus their root, with each level acquired only as a person earns it through merit: "he does not acquire them all at once, only according to his merits." Sefer Etz Chaim 39:1 reveals the cosmological stakes of this: the holy souls themselves are the Mayin Nukvin (feminine waters) that ascend to stimulate the union of Zachar and Nukva above, and new souls are born from each such union — meaning every act of Birurim and every soul elevated through Gilgul perpetuates the generation of new souls and advances the repair of the broken vessels.

The practical translation of this system into lived religious life appears in Sha'ar HaMitzvot, Introduction, which teaches that every spark of every soul is obligated to fulfill all 613 commandments across its various gilgulim, actively seeking out even incidental mitzvot it has not yet fulfilled — because until the full 613 are completed the soul cannot be whole. Pri Etz Chaim, Gate of Prayer extends the same structural principle to prayer, mapping the four sections of the daily service — Korbanot, Pesukei D'Zimrah, Birkot Keriat Shema, and the Amidah — onto the four worlds of ABYA and their inner and outer dimensions, so that prayer becomes a Tikkun traversing the entire cosmic order.

Later readers debated how literally to understand the Ari's foundational concept of tzimtzum. מכתב מאליהו, חלק ה עמוד עמוד תפד, וראה עוד ערך צמצום notes the question of whether the Baal HaTanya and the Vilna Gaon disagreed on the very definition of tzimtzum — whether it is to be taken literally or not, whether it applies only to the Or or to the Maor itself, and whether "Memaleh kol Almin" refers to the Essence — identifying this as a foundational and far-reaching dispute about the heart of the Ari's chiddush.

The opening of Etz Chaim presents the foundational contraction (tzimtzum): before creation, the Infinite Light filled all reality, and a conceptual withdrawal made room for finite worlds. This became one of the Arizal's defining metaphysical innovations.

4. The purpose and intention behind the creation of the worlds is now explained in two inquiries that have been dealt with by scholars throughout history. The first inquiry is what early and later scholars have explored in order to understand the reason for the creation of the worlds, to what end it was made. They concluded that the reason for this was because it was necessary for God, may He be blessed, to be complete in all His actions, powers, and names of greatness and glory. If His actions and powers were not actualized through action and deed, He would not be considered complete in His actions, powers, and names, so to speak. The great Name that He is called, the four-letter name of YHVH , is thus named because it expresses His eternal existence and existence before creation, during the existence of creation, and after it was transformed into what it is. If the worlds and all that is in them had not been created, the true nature of His eternal existence would not be seen, in the past, present, and future, and He would not be called by the name of YHVH as mentioned above. Likewise, the name ADNO”T is called upon the fact of Him having servants and He being their Lord. If He did not have creations, He could not be called Lord, and likewise with all His other names and titles, including the nicknames such as “merciful” and “gracious”. He could not be called by these names except for when there are creations in the world that call Him by those names, and the same applies to all other nicknames. However, once the worlds were created, His actions and powers came into being and were attributed to Him, and He can be called complete in all of His actions and powers, as well as in all His names and titles, without any deficiency, God forbid. The meaning of this is explained in great detail in Sefer HaChinuch, Parshat Pinchas, #187 and other places. It is known that He is called wise in all types of wisdom and understanding in all types of intellect. However, before the creation of the world, He was called by all these names and titles, in reference to all the ranks and levels that were destined to be created. For if they had not existed, why would He be called merciful, for example, except in reference to the creations that would be made? This is also discussed in Parshat Bo, #42 and elsewhere, that if His radiance had not spread over all the creations, how would they be aware of Him and how would His glory fill the entire earth? 5. The inquiry in question is closely related to the question of what is above and what is below, what is in front and what is behind, in Tractate Chagiga, where it states that this question is very deep and that a person almost risks getting lost in it if they delve too deeply into this inquiry. And the matter is as mentioned by our Sages in the aforementioned Mishnah, "Anyone who looks into these four things, it would have been better for him had he never come into the world: [what is above, what is below, what is before, and what is behind]; and whoever does not have respect for his Creator's honor, it would have been better for him had he never come into the world." Therefore, we will not be able to expand and delve deeper into their investigation. However, God willing, we will explain the main points of the chapters like a person peering through a crack, without delving into the deep matters. And the one who understands our words will find a good taste and understanding if he comprehends them. And the matter of this inquiry, which asks why the creation of this world was at a certain time and not before or after, is such that you need to know what is explained in our writings. It is known that the uppermost light, infinitely beyond, called Ein Sof, demonstrates that it cannot be grasped in any way, neither by thought nor by reflection, in essence. And it is abstracted and separated from all thoughts, and it precedes all created beings, formations, and actions, and it did not have a beginning or a starting point, for it always exists and endures forever, without any beginning or end. From Ein Sof, the existence of the great light called Arikh Anpin then emanated, which is known to all the ancient ones as mentioned in Branch Three. And after that, the lights which depend on it, are emanated from the great light called Adam Kadmon, to all the ancient ones, as it is mentioned in Branch III. Then, the lights which depend on it, are emanated from Adam Kadmon, these are many lights that come out from within it and shine outside of it. Some of them depend on his brain, some on his skull, some on his eyes, some on his ears, some on his nose, some on his mouth, some on his forehead, shining outside of it, and some around his body, which are the seven lower levels of him, and around them, many lights shine and depend on them, called the world of points. After that, four known and famous worlds were emanated from him, as mentioned in the Zohar and Tikkunim. And indeed, this Atzilut of the Adam Kadmon and the other worlds beneath it had a beginning and an end, and there was a time when they came into existence, unlike the Ein Sof mentioned above, which is abstracted and separated from all thoughts and precedes all that is created and made, and has no beginning or end whatsoever. And behold, from the time and moment that the spreading and unfolding of the lights and worlds mentioned above began, the existence of all creatures came into being until it reached the present reality. According to the order of spreading and unfolding in the order of time, it was done accordingly and it was impossible to anticipate or delay the creation of this world because every world was created after the creation of the world above it, and all the worlds were created and spread out and descended one after the other at different times until the time for the creation of this world arrived, and it was created at the appropriate time after the creation of the higher worlds above it. Suffice it to say that we cannot expand or deepen the explanation of this matter as needed, including how, how much, and when.

Each of the 613 commandments corresponds to one of the 248 limbs and sinews of the soul, and a person is obligated to fulfill all of them (except those physically impossible, such as Temple sacrifices after the destruction or commandments dependent on circumstances beyond human control); failure to complete all 613 commandments leaves the soul deficient and blemished, requiring reincarnation until the person fulfills every commandment and completes all the limbs of their soul.

Sha'ar HaGilgulim, Introduction 1

Sha'ar HaGilgulim, Introduction 1:1

The opening of Sha'ar HaGilgulim lays out the Lurianic framework of soul-levels, soul roots, reincarnation, and the spiritual purpose of a person's particular mission.

The four worlds of Atziluth, Briah, Yetzirah, and Assiyah exist in complete form even in the lower earthly realm, particularly through the Jewish people, who were chosen to bind all four worlds together below in order to refine the judgments that emanate from the Tree of Knowledge through all four dimensions.

Etz Chaim 48:1

Sefer Etz Chaim 48:1

The Lurianic account of reincarnation (gilgul) connects individual souls, unfinished spiritual tasks, and historical repair, giving a systematic framework for why souls return to the world.

Pri Etz Chaim, Sha'ar HaKavanot

Pri Etz Chaim, Gate of Prayer:1

The Arizal's teachings on kavvanot give liturgical practice a detailed mystical intentionality: blessings, prayer, Shabbat, festivals, and mitzvot participate in the repair of cosmic configurations.

Sha'arei Kedusha, Part 3 1

Sha'arei Kedusha, Part 3 1:11

R. Chaim Vital presents the Arizal's practical spiritual program: holiness, purity, disciplined character, and preparation for ruach ha-kodesh. It shows that Lurianic Kabbalah was meant to transform the person, not only describe metaphysics.

He emanated five worlds, one world being the soul for the next, and the next world being the soul for the next. These are: Primordial Man-Adam Kadmon, as mentioned in Sefer Tikkunim, which in the nomenclature of the Ge’onim is called, “Exceedingly Brilliant-Tzachtzechoot.” The second is the world of Emanation-Atzilut. The third is the world of Creation-Briyah. The fourth is the world of Formation-Yetzirah. The fifth is the world of Action-Asiyah. These five worlds are considered as One Being-Havayah Achat-הוי״ה אחת.

Likkutei Maamarim, On Shimshon:1

Likkutei Maamarim, On Shimshon:1

The passage teaches that the Arizal explained a fundamental metaphysical doctrine: God's infinite light simultaneously fills all worlds and encompasses all worlds, with the latter aspect relating to God's infinity where service and free choice do not apply, while the former (called tzimtzum) describes how God's infinite light contracts and conceals itself through thin channels and limited comprehension so that human intellect can grasp that divinity exists, and thus all divine names, attributes, and the performance of Torah and mitzvot depend entirely on this secret of tzimtzum.

Adir Bamarom, Beur Idra Rabba 95a

The passage states that the names of Atika Stimai are concealed and not explicitly explained in Torah except in one place, and that understanding this matter is among the highest teachings in this wisdom, rooted in the secrets of tzimtzum and the extension of the line from the infinite in its proper manner; it further explains that all of Torah is interpreted on a level entirely above physicality, and that two primordial things—tzimtzum and the extension of the line—are the foundation of all existence and divine governance, with these concepts being embodied in the Patriarchs and their descendants.

When Adam was created, he contained no impurity and his purpose was to elevate the worlds to a higher level and complete the cosmic repair (tikkun) begun by the Creator, at which point the evil inclination would be rectified and all evil would return to good, as will occur at the end of the tikkun—but this capacity existed only in Adam and Noah's era when divine light predominated, whereas from Abraham onward a different divine management (Anupin) took over.

Nefesh HaChayim, Gate 2 8

Nefesh HaChayim, Gate I 8:10

R. Chaim of Volozhin develops the Lurianic understanding of prayer, divine unification, and human intention, illustrating how the Arizal's cosmology shaped later Lithuanian theological spirituality.

And it’s known that the cherubs, one of them hints at Him (blessed be His name), and the second at Israel, His chosen. And how close Israel is and how well they cling to Him (blessed be His name) (or the opposite, heaven forefend), this is revealed in the cherubs’ postures, by way of a miracle and wonder. If their faces were faced directly toward Him (blessed be His name), the cherubs too then stood facing each other. Or if they turned their faces away somewhat to the side, so too, the situation was obvious immediately in the cherubs. Or if (heaven forefend) they turned completely away, the cherubs too instantly rotate and turn their faces away from each other completely (heaven forefend). And in T’rooma 152b: “When is she in compassion? He said: during the time when the cherubs turn back... and stare face-to-face, so that when the cherubs stare face-toface, then all of the colors are rectified... just as Israel organizes all of their rectifications toward the Holy One (blessed be He), so everything occurs. And in this way all is put in order... .”

Sefer HaLikutim, Introduction

Kedushat Levi, Likutim, Introduction:1

This collection preserves Lurianic teachings on the relationship between the Torah's narratives, the sefirotic structure, and the soul's work of repair, illustrating the Arizal's synthetic reading of scripture.

The passage discusses whether the Baal HaTanya and the Gaon of Vilna disagreed on fundamental aspects of the doctrine of tzimtzum itself—such as whether tzimtzum is literal or not, whether it affects only the light or the essence of God, and the meaning of "filling all worlds"—and cites the Gaon of Vilna's famous letter suggesting that Chassidim erred in understanding "filling all worlds" as referring to God's essence in a way that implies divinity exists in all physical objects, though the passage notes this would be a very substantial point of disagreement.
