What the sources say

The baseline ruling for the order of lighting — always beginning with the newly added candle and proceeding rightward — is set out by Kitzur Shulchan Arukh 139:11, and the Mishnah Berurah records a further dispute: Mishnah Berurah 676:9 notes that some hold the menorah placed to the right of the doorway always begins at the candle nearest the doorpost, moving right to left, while others hold that in all cases one starts with the newest candle regardless of placement, and concludes that the best practice is to arrange all the candles within the doorway's tefach so that both principles are satisfied simultaneously.

Building on that tension, Maamar Mordechai Hilchot Chanukah 7:43 rules that in our modern indoor homes, where there is no mezuzah side to orient toward, one must begin with the candle on the right closest to the doorpost; and since placing the menorah lengthwise — so that all candles fall within the tefach nearest the doorpost — resolves the competing considerations, he strongly recommends that arrangement, in which case one begins on the first night with the leftmost candle and adds each subsequent night toward the right.

Maamar Mordechai Hilchot Chanukah 7:48 records Rav Eliyahu's personal practice: he arranged the candles lengthwise close to the door following the view of the Rashal, so that all candles fell within the tefach nearest the doorpost; on the first night he lit the candle by the wall, and each subsequent night he added a candle toward the interior of the room, always beginning with the newly added candle — which is to his right — and finishing at the wall-side candle; and if that arrangement is impossible, he would place them along the wall to the right of the door and begin each night with the newest candle, which stands to his right.

Maamar Mordechai Hilchot Chanukah 7:51 brings the view that if the menorah is placed to the right of the doorpost one always begins with the candle nearest the door moving right to left, and if placed to the left one always begins nearest the door moving left to right — and again affirms that the ideal solution, following the Rashal, is to place all the candles within the doorway's space so that the requirement to begin near the doorpost and the principle of turning rightward are both fulfilled at once.

Beit Yosef, Orach Chayim 676

Beit Yosef, Orach Chayim 676:3

The passage presents a dispute regarding the order of kindling Chanukah candles at home: according to the Radak, on the first night one recites all three blessings before kindling, and on subsequent nights one recites the blessing "she'asah nisim" (who performed miracles) after kindling the first candle of that night and before kindling the additional candle; however, the Mehariy Kulon argues that one should always begin kindling from the newly added candle (moving from left to right) and bless over it, so that the blessing covers only the new candle each night and the blessing indicates the increased miracle corresponding to each day's addition.

Mishnah Berurah 676

Mishnah Berurah 676:9

There are two views on the proper sequence for lighting the Chanukah menorah: one holds that one always begins with the new candle each night regardless of the menorah's placement, while another holds that if candles are placed to the right of the doorway one should light from right to left starting with the rightmost candle, and if placed to the left one should light from left to right starting with the candle closest to the door; the passage notes that the ideal arrangement is to position all candles within the doorway space equidistant from it, one should avoid opening the door for half an hour while they burn, and one should position the previously lit candles to the left during lighting so the flame reaches them first and does not require passing over them.

Kitzur Shulchan Arukh 139

Kitzur Shulchan Arukh 139:11

On the first night one lights a candle on the right; each subsequent night one adds a candle to the left, always lighting the newly added candle first and then proceeding rightward; three berachos are recited before lighting on the first night (Lehadlik, She'asa nisim, and Shehecheyanu), while only the first two are said on other nights, and Haneiros halalu is recited while kindling the remaining lights. A convert says the bracha with "for Yisrael" rather than "for our forefathers" but fulfills the obligation either way; an onein should have another person light and recite berachos while responding Amein, but if no one else is available, may light without berachos.

According to our custom, the order of lighting the menorah is as follows: On the first night you kindle the light facing your right hand, on the second night you add one light to the left [of the previous night's light]; similarly, on each subsequent night you add one light to the left. The light that is added is always kindled first, and you continue lighting towards the right. On the first night, you recite three berachos before lighting the menorah: Lehadlik [To kindle the Chanukah light], She'asa nisim [Who has performed miracles], and Shehecheyanu. On the other nights you do not say Shehecheyanu. After you say the berachos you kindle one light, and while kindling the others, you says, Haneiros halalu [These lights] etc. A convert to Judaism should say, "Who has performed miracles for Yisrael," but if he said "la'avoseinu," [for our forefathers], he has fulfilled his obligation. An onein [a mourner before the burial], [should not light the menorah], but he should let someone else light the menorah, and say the berachos, and [the onein] should respond Amein. But if there is no one else, then he should light the menorah himself but without saying the berachos.

Shem MiShmuel, Chanukah

Shem MiShmuel, Chanukah:18

Beit Shammai holds that on the first day of Chanukah one lights eight candles and thereafter decreases, while Beit Hillel holds that on the first day one lights one candle and thereafter increases, with Beit Shammai's rationale being a parallel to the festival sacrifice (which decreases), and Beit Hillel's being the principle that one ascends in holiness and does not descend; the passage questions why Chanukah candles—meant for illumination and joy for Jews—should follow the decreasing pattern rather than ascending in the manner of ascending in holiness, and proposes that the festival sacrifice's decrease, though offered for the nations, represents their eventual diminishment, whereas Chanukah lights, symbolizing Israel's drawing near to God after distance and receiving increased love and joy, should properly increase.

Rav Mordechai Eliyahu (Maamar Mordechai Hilchot Chanukah 7:43)

Maamar Mordechai Hilchot Chanukah 7:43

The passage instructs that when lighting a Chanukah menorah at home without a mezuzah, one should place the menorah lengthwise within the handsbreadth adjacent to the doorway so that all candles are positioned near the entrance, and then light beginning from the leftmost candle and proceeding rightward, thereby fulfilling both the requirement that one's facing be directed rightward and the requirement that lighting occur in the handsbreadth closest to the door.

Rav Mordechai Eliyahu (Maamar Mordechai Hilchot Chanukah 7:48)

Maamar Mordechai Hilchot Chanukah 7:48

The author practiced what he considered the most correct method: arranging candles in a line near the doorway within a handbreadth of it (following Rosh Letzion), lighting the first night a candle by the wall and adding each subsequent night's candle toward the room's opening, beginning with the newly added candle and ending with the one by the wall; if this arrangement is impossible, one may arrange them on the wall in a row from the right side of the doorway, with the first candle within the handbreadth being sufficient, lighting each night starting with the new candle added on the right and proceeding to the one by the wall.

Rav Mordechai Eliyahu (Maamar Mordechai Hilchot Chanukah 7:51)

Maamar Mordechai Hilchot Chanukah 7:51

One opinion holds that if the menorah is placed on the right side of the doorway, one should always begin lighting from the rightmost candle nearest the door and proceed right to left, but if placed on the left side, one should light first the candle nearest the door and proceed left to right; however, the preferable and correct approach (if possible) is to arrange all the candles within the doorway itself in the handbreadth closest to the door, while taking care not to open the door for half an hour while the candles are burning so the wind does not extinguish them.
