Sulam explains that Rabbi Shimon derives the meaning of "gazelle" (tzvi) from the animal's nature: when fleeing, the gazelle moves gradually while repeatedly turning its head back toward the place it left, and thus Israel prayed that if they cause the divine presence to depart from them, may it flee like a gazelle that returns its head to where it abandoned, meaning returning to its former place; additionally, the gazelle sleeps with one eye open and one awake, so Israel prayed to God to act like the gazelle, which neither slumbers nor sleeps as the guardian of Israel.
