Redemption: End of Exile or Beginning of Geulah

These sources explore the theological and textual frameworks for understanding whether contemporary historical changes represent the conclusion of exile, the onset of redemption, or an intermediate stage. They draw on biblical prophecies of restoration, rabbinic teaching about the messianic birth-pangs and the conditions of redemption, and medieval commentary on covenantal exile and return.

What the sources say

Start with Kol HaTor 1:1-10: it speaks of standing “on the threshold of the beginning of Redemption,” and pairs that with learning the “footsteps of the Mashiach,” so its framing is plainly that the present moment is the start of geulah rather than the end of galus.

That same direction appears in Maamar HaGeulah, Peticha 1:2, which says that the geulah is being prepared during the period of galus, and in Sefat Emet, Vayikra, Passover 22:5, which says that the geulah of Mitzrayim was a beginning and preparation for the future geulah.

Several other passages describe geulah as already beginning within the galus itself: Maamar HaGeulah, Chapter 4 4:4 says that from the time of the "פקידה" the repairs and unions increase, and that the first repair is done within the galus itself; Maamar HaGeulah, Chapter 8 3:4 says that the closing of one stage and the opening of the next are contiguous and that the darkness is only temporary; and Maamar HaGeulah, Chapter 5 11:1 says that what is damaged in galus is repaired in geulah.

The Chazal sources also frame the transition as a process rather than a clean break: Sanhedrin 98a:11 says the son of David can come in a generation that is entirely righteous or entirely guilty, and contrasts speedy arrival with "בעתה"; Megillah 17b:13 says that war itself is "אתחלתא דגאולה"; and Sotah 49b:3 lists the moral and social collapse that characterizes the period before redemption.

Modern or later voices on the sheet continue that same reading of the era: B'Mareh HaBazak Volume I 44 says that clear signs of geulah have appeared in recent generations, מכתב מאליהו, חלק ב קבלת התורה ביראה, עמוד לא describes a future redemption that can unfold through the redemption itself, and Ein Aya, Shabbat 6:45 speaks of a transition from a time of disorder to a time of light and justice.

Isaiah 66:8-10

Isaiah 66:8-10

Isaiah presents Zion’s restoration as a sudden birth, asking whether a nation can be born in one day. It captures the paradox of geulah appearing abruptly after a long period of travail.

Who ever heard the like? Who ever witnessed such events? Can a land pass through travail In a single day? Or is a nation born All at once? Yet Zion travailed And at once bore her children!

Daniel 12:1-4

Daniel 12:1-4

Daniel speaks of an unprecedented time of distress followed by deliverance, resurrection, and increased knowledge. The passage frames redemption as emerging through crisis and upheaval.

“At that time, the great prince, Michael, who stands beside the sons of your people, will appear. It will be a time of trouble, the like of which has never been since the nation came into being. At that time, your people will be rescued, all who are found inscribed in the book. Many of those that sleep in the dust of the earth will awake, some to eternal life, others to reproaches, to everlasting abhorrence.

Isaiah 60:1-3

Isaiah 60:2

Isaiah depicts darkness covering the earth while divine light rises upon Zion, with nations drawn toward that light. The passage is a central biblical image for redemption emerging within an otherwise dark world.

Ezekiel 37:1-14

Ezekiel 37:1-14

The vision of the dry bones portrays national revival from apparent death, culminating in God’s breath entering Israel. It is a foundational source for understanding redemption as resurrection and renewal.

וַיֹּ֘אמֶר֮ אֵלַי֒ בֶּן־אָדָ֕ם הָעֲצָמ֣וֹת הָאֵ֔לֶּה כׇּל־בֵּ֥ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל הֵ֑מָּה הִנֵּ֣ה אֹמְרִ֗ים יָבְשׁ֧וּ עַצְמוֹתֵ֛ינוּ וְאָבְדָ֥ה תִקְוָתֵ֖נוּ נִגְזַ֥רְנוּ לָֽנוּ׃ לָכֵן֩ הִנָּבֵ֨א וְאָמַרְתָּ֜ אֲלֵיהֶ֗ם כֹּה־אָמַר֮ אֲדֹנָ֣י יֱהֹוִה֒ הִנֵּה֩ אֲנִ֨י פֹתֵ֜חַ אֶת־קִבְרֽוֹתֵיכֶ֗ם וְהַעֲלֵיתִ֥י אֶתְכֶ֛ם מִקִּבְרוֹתֵיכֶ֖ם עַמִּ֑י וְהֵבֵאתִ֥י אֶתְכֶ֖ם אֶל־אַדְמַ֥ת יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ וְנָתַתִּ֨י רוּחִ֤י בָכֶם֙ וִחְיִיתֶ֔ם וְהִנַּחְתִּ֥י אֶתְכֶ֖ם עַל־אַדְמַתְכֶ֑ם וִידַעְתֶּ֞ם כִּֽי־אֲנִ֧י יְהֹוָ֛ה דִּבַּ֥רְתִּי וְעָשִׂ֖יתִי נְאֻם־יְהֹוָֽה׃ {פ}

And I was told, “O mortal, these bones are the whole House of Israel. They say, ‘Our bones are dried up, our hope is gone; we are doomed.’ Prophesy, therefore, and say to them: Thus said the Sovereign GOD: I am going to open your graves and lift you out of the graves, O My people, and bring you to the land of Israel. I will put My breath into you and you shall live again, and I will set you upon your own soil. Then you shall know that I, GOD, have spoken and have acted”—declares GOD.

Ezekiel 36:24-28

Ezekiel 36:26

Ezekiel links the ingathering of Israel, purification, a new heart, and renewed covenantal life. Redemption is therefore both a historical return and a spiritual transformation.

Sotah 49b

Sotah 49b:3

The Mishnah and Gemara describe the troubling conditions of the period preceding the Messiah, including social breakdown and diminished authority. This is a classic source for the notion of chevlei Mashiach, redemptive birth-pangs.

Sanhedrin 98a

Sanhedrin 98a:11

The sages discuss the signs and timing of the Messiah, including the possibility that redemption arrives either in a worthy generation or despite an unworthy one. The sugya warns against simplistic predictions while presenting contrasting models of geulah.

And Rabbi Yoḥanan says: The son of David will come only in a generation that is entirely innocent, in which case they will be deserving of redemption, or in a generation that is entirely guilty, in which case there will be no alternative to redemption. He may come in a generation that is entirely innocent, as it is written: “And your people also shall be all righteous; they shall inherit the land forever” (Isaiah 60:21). He may come in a generation that is entirely guilty, as it is written: “And He saw that there was no man, and was astonished that there was no intercessor; therefore His arm brought salvation to Him, and His righteousness, it sustained Him” (Isaiah 59:16). And it is written: “For My own sake, for My own sake will I do it; for how should it be profaned? And My glory I will not give it to another” (Isaiah 48:11). § Rabbi Alexandri says: Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi raises a contradiction in a verse addressing God’s commitment to redeem the Jewish people. In the verse: “I the Lord in its time I will hasten it” (Isaiah 60:22), it is written: “In its time,” indicating that there is a designated time for the redemption, and it is written: “I will hasten it,” indicating that there is no set time for the redemption. Rabbi Alexandri explains: If they merit redemption through repentance and good deeds I will hasten the coming of the Messiah. If they do not merit redemption, the coming of the Messiah will be in its designated time. Rabbi Alexandri says: Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi raises a contradiction between two depictions of the coming of the Messiah. It is written: “There came with the clouds of heaven, one like unto a son of man…and there was given him dominion and glory and a kingdom…his dominion is an everlasting dominion” (Daniel 7:13–14). And it is written: “Behold, your king will come to you; he is just and victorious; lowly and riding upon a donkey and upon a colt, the foal of a donkey” (Zechariah 9:9). Rabbi Alexandri explains: If the Jewish people merit redemption, the Messiah will come in a miraculous manner with the clouds of heaven. If they do not merit redemption, the Messiah will come lowly and riding upon a donkey.

Berakhot 34b

Berakhot 34b:19

Rabbi Yohanan teaches that the difference between the present age and the messianic age is the end of foreign political domination. The passage helps distinguish partial historical change from the full messianic condition.

Megillah 17b

Megillah 17b:13

The placement of the blessings in the Amidah associates ingathering, restoration of justice, rebuilding Jerusalem, and the Davidic kingdom in a sequence of redemption. It supplies a structural model for discerning stages of geulah.

The Gemara continues: And why did they see fit to institute to say the blessing of redemption as the seventh blessing? Rava said: Since there is a tradition that the Jewish people are destined to be redeemed in the seventh year of the Sabbatical cycle, consequently, they fixed redemption as the seventh blessing. But didn’t the Master say in a baraita: In the sixth year of the Sabbatical cycle in the days of the arrival of the Messiah, heavenly sounds will be heard; in the seventh year there will be wars; and upon the conclusion of the seventh year, in the eighth year, the son of David, the Messiah, will come? The redemption will take place not during the seventh year but after it. The Gemara answers: Nevertheless, the war that takes place during the seventh year is also the beginning of the redemption process, and it is therefore correct to say that Israel will be redeemed in the seventh year. The Gemara continues: And why did they see fit to institute that one says the blessing of healing as the eighth blessing? Rabbi Aḥa said: Since circumcision was assigned to the eighth day of life, and circumcision requires healing, consequently, they established healing as the eighth blessing. And why did they see fit to institute that one says the blessing of bountiful years as the ninth blessing? Rabbi Alexandri said: This blessing was instituted in reference to those who raise the prices of food. We pray for rain so that the price of produce will not rise as a result of shortages, as it is written: “Break the arm of the wicked” (Psalms 10:15), referring to the wicked, who practice deception and extort the poor. And when David expressed this request, he expressed it in the ninth psalm. Although today it is considered the tenth psalm, the first and second psalms are actually counted as one, and therefore this is the ninth psalm. Therefore, the blessing of the years was fixed as the ninth blessing. The Gemara asks: And why did they see fit to institute that one says the blessing of the ingathering of the exiles after the blessing of the years? As it is written: “And you, O mountains of Israel, you shall shoot forth your branches, and yield your fruit to My people Israel; for they will soon be coming” (Ezekiel 36:8), which indicates that the ingathering of the exiles will follow after Eretz Yisrael is blessed with bountiful produce. And once the exiles have been gathered, judgment will be meted out to the wicked, as it is stated: “And I will turn my hand against you and purge away your dross as with lye” (Isaiah 1:25), and immediately after it is written: “And I will restore your judges as at first” (Isaiah 1:26). For this reason the blessing of the restoration of judges comes after the blessing of the ingathering of the exiles.

Pesachim 88a

Pesachim 88a:3

The sages read Isaiah’s vision of nations streaming to Jerusalem as part of the future redemption. The passage highlights Jerusalem’s spiritual centrality and the universal dimension of geulah.

The Gemara returns to its discussion of prophecies of consolation that are related to those in the book of Hosea. And Rabbi Elazar said: What is the meaning of that which is written: “And many peoples shall go and say: Go and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; and He will teach us of His ways, and we will walk in His paths” (Isaiah 2:3)? The Gemara notes that Jacob is the only Patriarch mentioned and asks: Is He the God of Jacob and not the God of Abraham and Isaac? Rather, the verse specifically mentions Jacob to allude to the fact that the Temple will ultimately be described in the same way that Jacob referred to it. It will not be referred to as it was referred to by Abraham. It is written of him that when he prayed at the location of the Temple mountain, he called it mount, as it is stated: “As it is said on this day: On the mount where the Lord is seen” (Genesis 22:14). And it will not be referred to as it was referred to by Isaac. It is written of him that he called the location of the Temple field when he prayed there, as it is stated: “And Isaac went out to meditate in the field” (Genesis 24:63). Rather, it will be described as it was referred to by Jacob, who called it house, as it is stated: “And he called the name of that place Beth-El” (Genesis 28:19), which means house of God. Rabbi Yoḥanan said: The day of the ingathering of exiles is as great as the day on which heaven and earth were created. This is derived by means of a verbal analogy between the word day in these two contexts, as it is stated concerning the ingathering of exiles: “And the children of Judea and the children of Israel shall be gathered together, and they shall appoint themselves one head, and shall go up out of the land; for great shall be the day of Jezreel” (Hosea 2:2), and it is written in the narrative of Creation: “And there was evening and there was morning, one day” (Genesis 1:5).

Shabbat 118b

Shabbat 118b:2

Rav Naḥman bar Yitzḥak teaches that one who delights in Shabbat is rescued from the oppression of exile, and Rabbi Yoḥanan in the name of Rabbi Shimon ben Yoḥai states that if Israel properly observed two Shabbatot according to their laws, they would immediately be redeemed.

Rav Naḥman bar Yitzḥak said: One who delights in Shabbat is rescued from the oppression of exile. He derives it by means of a verbal analogy. It is written here, with regard to Shabbat: “And I will cause you to ride on the heights [bamotei] of the world” (Isaiah 58:14), and it is written there: “You are fortunate Israel, who is like you? A nation redeemed by God, the shield that aids you and the sword of your triumph. Your enemies will try to defeat you and you will trample their high places [bamoteimo]” (Deuteronomy 33:29). Rav Yehuda said that Rav said: With regard to anyone who delights in the Shabbat, God grants him his heart’s desires, as it is stated: “And you shall delight in God and He will grant you your heart’s desires” (Psalms 37:4). This delight in God, which is mentioned in the verse, I do not know what it is. When it says: “And you shall call the Shabbat delight,” one must say: It is the delight of Shabbat. The Gemara asks: With what does one delight in the day of Shabbat? Rav Yehuda, son of Rav Shmuel bar Sheilat, said in the name of Rav: With a dish of beets, and large fish, and heads of garlic. Rav Ḥiyya bar Ashi said that Rav said: Even with regard to a small item and one prepared it in deference to Shabbat, it is a delight. The Gemara asks: What is the small item mentioned? Rav Pappa said: Small fried fish. Rav Yehuda said that Rav said: Had the Jewish people properly observed the first Shabbat that was commanded them, no nation or tongue would have ever ruled them, as it is stated: “And it happened on the seventh day, some people went out from the nation to collect and they did not find” (Exodus 16:27). And it is written after they went out to collect manna: “And Amalek came and fought with Israel in Refidim” (Exodus 17:8). Rabbi Yoḥanan said in the name of Rabbi Shimon ben Yoḥai: If only the Jewish people would keep two Shabbatot in accordance with their halakhot, they would be immediately redeemed, as it is stated: “So said God to the eunuchs who will keep My Shabbatot” (Isaiah 56:4), and it is written after that: “And I will bring them to My holy mountain and will let them rejoice in My house of prayer” (Isaiah 56:7).

Ramban on Leviticus 26:16

Ramban on Leviticus 26:16

Ramban’s discussion of the covenantal curses explains the exile’s trajectory and the possibility of restoration within the larger covenant. It provides a framework for reading contemporary suffering without reducing it to a definitive timetable.

Abarbanel on Isaiah 60:1

Abarbanel on Isaiah 60:1

Abarbanel reads Isaiah’s light and the nations’ movement toward Zion in a broad redemptive framework. His commentary is useful for exploring whether historical developments represent beginnings of restoration or only preparation for it.

The sages teach that the only difference between this world and the messianic age is subjugation to foreign kingdoms, and that the specifics of how messianic events will occur are hidden matters about which there is disagreement among the sages, and therefore one should not preoccupy oneself with aggadic interpretations or calculations of the end times but rather wait and believe in the matter generally.

Kol HaTor 1:1-10

Attributed to the Vilna Gaon's school, this work presents stages and practical dimensions of the messianic process, including the ingathering of exiles, settlement of the Land, and gradual redemption through human effort.

As we stand on the threshold of the beginning of Redemption (when “the songbird’s time has arrived,” which is the year 542 of the 6th Millennium), at the Vilna Gaon’s behest and with his holy blessing, and with the help of God, we are obligated to learn and understand all the paths of the footsteps of the Mashiach and the manner of future deeds, in accord with the mission and instructions of the Vilna Gaon. The Gaon merited being the light of Mashiach ben Yosef, in order to promote the ingathering of the exiles and to reveal the hints in the Torah regarding the footsteps of the Mashiach ben Yosef. He was therefore sent down from Heaven [this is based on the words, [Isa. 60:22] “the smallest will become a thousand, ” etc., and this hints at the number 999 which is in the sefira Yesod, and the root of the Supernal Radiance (זיהרא עילאה) at the high level of the angel Metatron, who is the Angel of Interior. All the hints about the beginning of the Redemption and the secrets concerning the footsteps of the Mashiach, until and including the very end were revealed to the Gaon. He wrote about the final end at length in his commentary on the Sifra Dezniuta, adjuring others in the name of the God of Israel not to reveal it. After many of his students had promised him faithfully to go to Zion and begin working there on gathering in the exiles when the awakening starts from below, with the help of God, then the Gaon revealed to them all the steps of the beginning of the Redemption. According to a major principle of the Gaon that appears in Sifra Dezniuta, everything that was, is, and will be in all the upper and lower worlds, as well as all the general and personal things that will happen in every generation--all these are hinted at in the Torah (see below, Chapter 3, for hints in holy works). According to the Gaon, all the work involved in gathering in the exiles, building Jerusalem and broadening the settlement of the land of Israel so that the Shechina will return to it, all the principles of the work and all the major and minor details are connected to the mission and role of the first mashiach, Mashiach ben Yosef. Mashiach ben Yosef is the miraculous power who will assist every act done when the awakening starts from below, in a natural manner, because he comes from the earth. Mashiach ben David, however, will come from Heaven as revealed by the different aspects of Rachel and Leah, and as known regarding the footsteps of the Mashiach and the revealed end. Mashiach ben Yosef himself is a composite of two aspects: on the one hand, he is Yosef the son of Rachel of the land; on the other hand, he is Yosef son of Jacob from Heaven. It is therefore incumbent upon us to learn and to understand all the 156 characteristics [qualities], appellations, and all aspects and special attributes of Mashiach ben Yosef (as explained below in Chapter 2). These will be a light for our feet and direct us what to do and how, in connection with what lies ahead, with the help of the Redeemer of Israel, may it be speedily in our day. According to the Vilna Gaon, if Israel does not have the merit, then the beginning of the Redemption will occur with an awakening from below, as occurred during the time of Cyrus, during the Second Temple, as an act from the left side, that is, from the quality of Din. That is what is meant by “his left hand is under my head,” which refers to Mashiach ben Yosef. This will occur with the permission of the kings of the nations. Later on, the complete Redemption will come from the right side, that is, with the quality of Lovingkindness, and by the line of Mercy according to what is written, [Isa. 54:7] “and with abundant mercy, I will gather you.” According to the Gaon, the ingathering of exiles at the beginning of the Redemption will proceed by means of deliverance and ransom, as is written, “then the ransomed of the Lord will return, and come to Zion with glad song” [Isa. 35:10]. All this will be accomplished by Mashiach ben Yosef: The deliverance will be from enslavement of the body and enslavement of the soul. The word has two meanings: it refers to the fact that they will return to Zion as is written: “they will come to Zion.” It also refers to the fact that they will repent [ comes from the same root as repentance] as revealed by the words, “they will achieve joy and gladness.”

Maamar HaGeulah, Chapter 4 4:4

Maamar HaGeulah, Chapter 4 4:4

From the time of the initial rectification, corrections and unions will proceed and strengthen with endless joy, and the sprouting shoots visible in the land are the growths that include the messiahs; the union does not cease but intensifies greatly in powerful longing and love (as indicated by "the time of singing has come" — the Shekhinah singing to her Master — and "the voice of the turtledove is heard in our land"), for the King does not depart the garden but walks within it in which all the righteous and redeemed Israel rejoice, and this is the great joy that will be Israel's perpetually from the time of redemption onward, since once the first rectification is completed within exile itself before departure, from that time forward all remains in constant union with ever-increasing lights at every moment, such that the joy reaches a degree beyond description.

Maamar HaGeulah, Chapter 8 3:4

The passage describes a moment when closing windows and opening a gate occur almost simultaneously with no interval between them—one closes as the other opens—preventing the world's destruction; though the closing of the windows produces a period of great darkness below, this darkness will not persist long because the gate's opening will strengthen and the light will return powerfully as before.

Netzach Yisrael 1:2

Netzach Yisrael 1:2

The Maharal frames exile as an unnatural condition, and precisely for that reason a temporary one destined to be reversed — a foundational conceptual reading of the Churban.

Netzach Yisrael 47:7

The first redemption was not eternal redemption but temporary, comparable to a lightning flash that appears briefly in the sky and then passes; therefore the exodus itself occurred in haste, since anything that is not permanent by nature passes quickly.

Nefesh HaChayim, Gate IV 31

Nefesh HaChayim, Gate IV 31:12

Nefesh HaChayim presents Torah study and human spiritual labor as forces that sustain the world and hasten its rectification. It shifts the question from identifying dates to participating in the process of redemption.

This is what is stated in Parshat Ha-Torah (Avot, chapter 6): “and he will become as a spring that overcomes and goes on its way”. And there’s room to also explain it relative to this matter mentioned above, that just as a spring gushes and splits anything in its path, even though at times it’s mired and clogged by large amounts of mud and clay, even so it gushes and unblocks its path, and overcomes and flows slowly but surely, until after many days it overcomes and is fully and completely revealed, and flows as before. So too one who is involved with Torah for its own sake, even if he is at first soiled with awesome transgressions and sins, and is very mired in the depths of the mud and clay (may the Merciful save us), even so, via involvement with the Torah, his heart/ mind will be surely set aright, for the lamp within it will certainly return him to good condition, and the good will overcome the evil within him little by little, until finally, without a doubt, the good will overcome and flow in every part of him completely, and he will be sanctified from his spiritual impurity, and spiritual purity will flower in every part of him.

Responsa Chatam Sofer, Yoreh De'ah 356

The passage argues that belief in Geulah is a fundamental principle of Torah and Nevi'im (as stated in parashat Netzavim and Ha'azinu), so one who doubts it denies a core tenet of faith; it further discusses Rabbi Hillel's view that there is no Mashiach but rather Hakadosh Baruch Hu Himself will redeem Israel, and concludes that even according to this view there is still Geulah (though not a king Mashiach), yet one who maintains this position against the consensus of the Chachmei Yisrael is considered a denier of Torah altogether and may not be followed.

Maamar HaGeulah, Chapter 5 11:1

Maamar HaGeulah, Chapter 5 11:1

The passage explains that all that was damaged and corrupted during exile is repaired and corrected in redemption—corrected even more than the extent of the damage—so that the Shechinah will be repaired and adorned more than ever before; it illustrates this through the verse "Come, my beloved, let us go out to the field," interpreted as the Shechinah speaking to the Holy One, saying in exile "come with me," but at the time of redemption when her beloved is with her, she says "let us go out"—from exile to the field, which represents the supernal place of joy and delight, the blessed field.

Sefat Emet, Genesis, For Chanuka 10:6

The passage states that the Jewish people require a new illumination, which necessitates subsequent hiddenness and exile; each opening of a gate is balanced by its opposite until complete redemption comes speedily; every redemption serves as preparation and foundation for the exile that follows it, just as the Holy One creates a cure before the blow, and therefore the miracle of Hanukkah is salvation and deliverance from this bitter exile.

Likkutei Torah explains exile and redemption in spiritual terms, including the revelation of divine consciousness that accompanies geulah. It supports a layered model in which external historical change and inner liberation may not occur simultaneously.

The passage states that Egypt's spiritual impurity represented the fiftieth gate of tumah—complete severance from holiness with no possibility of correction—yet the Jewish people were prevented from falling to this final level by God's promise to Abraham; similarly, in the future redemption, even if repentance is delayed until the "appointed time," the fall to the fiftieth gate will be forestalled through the redemption itself, which constitutes a sudden reversal from end to end, developing at a supernatural pace as occurred in the Egyptian exile's progression from the forty-nine gates of impurity to the forty-nine gates of binah.

The end of exile is the period called by Chazal "the footsteps of Messiah," characterized by audacity increasing, during which the divine presence is under the control of the brazen among Israel—namely the mixed multitude (erev rav) whose essential impurity is arrogance toward heaven (the attribute of Amalek)—and one must recognize this test in its full force to understand the task imposed from heaven upon our time: to strengthen oneself against false materialist philosophies and recognize that those who claim "we have done our part, we came to the land of Israel, we fought for it, and we control it" are completely mistaken, for ultimately faith and fear of heaven will become clear.

B'Mareh HaBazak Volume I 44

B'Mareh HaBazak Volume I 44

The passage identifies clear signs of redemption appearing in recent generations: the renewal of the land of Israel bearing abundant fruit despite its enemies, recognition by the nations of Israel's rightful claim to an independent and renewed land, an unprecedented gathering of exiles, and a tremendous flourishing of the Torah world, with Israel's suffering cup full and its intrinsic merit combining to awaken a time of divine closeness.

Ein Aya, Shabbat 6:45

Ein Aya, Shabbat 6:45

The passage describes a transition from a period of global corruption and wickedness ruled by the wicked, where the sword causes great destruction, to a period of light in which peace will dwell and justice will govern the entire world—this being the manifestation of God's kingship on earth and the essence of messianism; meanwhile, a transitional state must exist where human discord continues but its purpose is already prepared in every heart and people, until through the aid of coercive force, peace will actually be established in practice.

Gray Matter IV, Israel, Gush Katif Fasting and Kinnot

Rav Moshe views the Holocaust as one among many tragedies of the ongoing exile, and attributes the perceived necessity of withdrawing from Gush Katif to Arab intolerance of Jewish sovereignty, which he sees as another manifestation of the anti-Semitism that characterizes this prolonged exile.

Rav Moshe writes that the Holocaust should be seen “as part of the many tragedies we have endured during this long Galut (Exile).” Indeed, the perceived need for the withdrawal from Gush Katif was entirely due to the relentless intolerance of many Arabs for Jewish sovereignty in Eretz Yisrael, which is yet another expression of the anti-Semitism so unfortunately characteristic of this long Exile.

The Mei HaShiloach interprets the sabbatical year as a spiritual practice rooted in trust in God's sovereignty. The Zohar on Voice, Word, and Revelation

The Zohar teaches that before Moses, divine speech (Dibbur) existed only as inarticulate voice; full articulate speech was revealed only at Sinai when voice and word were reunited. This mystical reading draws on biblical passages about Moses's heaviness of speech, God's name YHVH becoming known, and the progressive sounds at Mount Sinai.
