What the sources say

A foundational Chassidic teaching cited across multiple farbrengens is that Chai Elul marks the birthday of the two great luminaries of Chassidus: the Baal Shem Tov, born on Chai Elul 5458, and the Alter Rebbe, born on Chai Elul 5505, as Likkutei Sichos 24 (Chai Elul) states explicitly, and Likkutei Sichos 4 (Chai Elul) adds, on our reading of the cited page, that the Alter Rebbe is regarded as the true 'grandson' of the Baal Shem Tov because he inherited his innermost essence and integrated it into human comprehension through Chabad Chassidus.

The relationship between the two founders is characterized by a pointed distinction: Likkutei Sichos 19 (Chai Elul) opens with the formulation that the Baal Shem Tov showed 'how one must serve G-d,' while the Alter Rebbe showed 'how it is possible to serve G-d' — and, on our reading of the full cited page, the sicha elaborates that general Chassidus inspires the soul with the overarching desire and faith, while Chabad provides the intellectual and cognitive tools to internalize and execute that service in practical detail.

Likkutei Sichos 29 (Chai Elul) opens with an ancient Chassidic saying in two versions — one that Chai Elul 'brought and continues to bring vitality into the month of Elul,' and another that it 'gives vitality to the spiritual labor of Ani L'dodi v'Dodi Li' — and, on our reading of the cited page, the Rebbe explains these as two complementary paths: revelation from above, associated with the Baal Shem Tov, and personal internal effort from below, associated with the Alter Rebbe, both of which are essential for the Elul period of preparation.

Likkutei Sichos 24 (Chai Elul) further develops, on our reading of the cited page, the theme that Chai Elul represents a spiritual 'birth' for the Jewish people — a transition from a passive, fetus-like state to an active and independent 'living soul' in which every limb and action is filled with vitality — and that integrating the light of Chassidus into the vessels of intellect and daily action ultimately hastens the redemption.

The broader Elul context into which these farbrengens speak is supplied by Peri Tzadik (Rosh Chodesh Elul 3:3), which frames the month of Elul as preparation for Tishrei and links it to the theme of teshuvah as the vehicle of redemption, and by Mishnah Berurah (581:2), which records the widespread custom of reciting Mizmor L'David (Tehillim 27) morning and evening from Rosh Chodesh Elul through Yom Kippur — practices whose spirit of heightened spiritual attention forms the backdrop against which the Chai Elul birthday farbrengens were held.

Peri Tzadik, Rosh Chodesh Elul 3:3

Elul is established as preparation before Tishrei (the month of redemption according to Rabbi Akiva's view that the world was created in Tishrei), accomplished through repentance; the letter yud of "Let there be light" corresponds to wisdom and points to the rectification of action through wisdom, with each subsequent day of creation marked by "it was good," indicating the presence of light throughout.

Mishnah Berurah 581:2

Mishnah Berurah 581:2

From Rosh Chodesh Elul through Yom Kippur, the custom in our lands is to recite Psalm 27 ("A Psalm of David, the Lord is my light") morning and evening after completing prayer, followed by Kaddish, and this practice extends through Erev Rosh Hashanah inclusive; on days with Musaf, the psalm is recited after Shacharit before Ain Kamocha and after Mincha in the evening, and in places where it is recited after prayer on Rosh Chodesh, Psalm 103 should be said first, as well as when reciting the daily psalm after Shacharit.

Likkutei Sichos 19 Chai Elul

The sichah distinguishes between general Hasidism and Chabad: the Baal Shem Tov demonstrated how one must serve G-d through inspiring the soul with overall desire and faith, while the Alter Rebbe demonstrated how it is possible to serve G-d by providing the intellectual and cognitive tools to internalize and execute that service in detail.

In this sichaThe sichah explores the significance of Chai Elul, the birthday of both the Baal Shem Tov (founder of general Hasidism) and the Alter Rebbe (founder of Chabad). It explains the distinction between their respective paths: general Hasidism inspires the soul with the overall desire and faith to serve G-d, showing 'how one must serve,' while Chabad provides the intellectual and cognitive tools to internalize and execute this service in detail, showing 'how it is possible to serve.'

Likkutei Sichos 24 Chai Elul

Chai Elul marks the birthday of the Baal Shem Tov and the Alter Rebbe, and represents a spiritual birth transforming Jewish religious life from a passive, undeveloped state into an active, vital existence by integrating the light of Chassidus into human intellect and daily practice, thereby spreading godliness and hastening redemption.

In this sichaThe sicha explains that Chai Elul, the birthday of the Baal Shem Tov and the Alter Rebbe, represents the "birth" of Jewish spiritual life, transitioning it from a passive "fetus-like" state to an active, independent "living soul" (nefesh chayah) where every limb and action is filled with vitality. This spiritual birth is achieved by integrating the spiritual light of Chassidus into the vessels of human intellect and daily action ("vishevta bah"), leading to the active dissemination of godliness throughout the entire world, which ultimately hastens the redemption.

Likkutei Sichos 29 Chai Elul

The Sicha discusses two versions of an ancient Chassidic saying about Chai Elul—one stating that the day brings vitality to the month of Elul, and another that it gives vitality to the spiritual work of "Ani L'dodi"—which the Rebbe presents as complementary expressions of revelation from above and personal effort from below, both essential for Elul's preparation.

In this sichaThe Sicha explores two different Chassidic traditions regarding Chai Elul: one stating that the day 'brings' vitality to the month of Elul, and the other that it 'gives' vitality to the spiritual labor of 'Ani L'dodi.' The Rebbe explains that these represent two complementary paths of spiritual service—revelation from above (associated with the Baal Shem Tov) and personal internal effort from below (associated with the Alter Rebbe)—both of which are vital for preparation during Elul.

Chai Elul marks the birthday of both the Baal Shem Tov and the Alter Rebbe, and the Alter Rebbe is considered the true grandson of the Baal Shem Tov because he inherited and transmitted the Baal Shem Tov's innermost essence through Chabad Chassidus.

In this sichaChai Elul is the birthday of both the Baal Shem Tov and the Alter Rebbe, signifying a flow of essential spiritual light into the world. The Alter Rebbe is considered the true 'grandson' of the Baal Shem Tov because he inherited his innermost essence and integrated it into human comprehension through Chabad Chassidus.
