What the sources say

The forty days from Rosh Chodesh Elul through Yom Kippur are designated as the primary season of divine closeness and receptivity to repentance: Kitzur Shulchan Arukh 128:1 explains that while God accepts sincere repentance throughout the year, these days are uniquely chosen and prepared for teshuvah as days of mercy and divine favor, rooted in Moshe's ascent to receive the second Tablets on Rosh Chodesh Elul, and Mishnah Berurah 581:1 adds the mnemonic that the acronym of 'אני לדודי ודודי לי' (Shir HaShirim 6:3) spells אלול, signaling that these forty days are a time when the heart draws near to its Beloved in teshuvah and the Beloved draws near to receive it.

The practical observances of the month — shofar blowing each morning, rising early for selichot, and scrupulous attention to the details of mitzvot — are instituted to awaken Israel to teshuvah: Tur, Orach Chayim 581 records that Chazal instituted shofar blowing throughout Elul to warn Israel to do teshuvah, drawing on the verse 'if the shofar is sounded in the city' (Amos 3:6), and Shulchan Arukh, Orach Chayim 581:1-2 codifies the Sephardic custom of rising at dawn for selichot from Rosh Chodesh Elul while the Rema records the Ashkenazic custom of shofar blowing after Shacharit throughout the month.

The inner dimension of Elul's avodah is the human initiative of turning toward God — 'ani ledodi,' I to my Beloved — which itself draws forth the divine response: Sefat Emet, Devarim, For the Month of Elul 12:2 teaches that the acronym אלול points to the revelation of the thirteen attributes of mercy during these days, but specifically in Elul this revelation comes through the awakening of Israel themselves, captured in the phrase 'ani ledodi,' while Sefat Emet, Devarim, For the Month of Elul 4:2 adds that during this period of closeness at year's end one must separate from worldly entanglements and cleave to the supernal root, since throughout the year one becomes tainted through the influence of evildoers.

מכתב מאליהו, חלק ב עמוד נו teaches that the entire avodah of Elul is to ignite enthusiasm and multiply acts of strengthening — moving from the extreme of laxity to the opposite extreme of chizuk — and that this is precisely the lesson Chazal encoded in the Shulchan Arukh's ruling to be scrupulous even in mitzvot one does not normally observe during the Ten Days of Teshuvah: the outward shift from one extreme to the other prepares the heart and opens the possibility of genuine teshuvah, so that through 'na'aseh,' the multiplication of deeds, one can arrive at 'nishma.'

Shem MiShmuel, Shoftim 6:19 grounds the month's avodah in yishuv ha-da'at — the settling and composure of the mind — explaining that Elul, the sixth month corresponding to the sefira of yesod which reaches up to da'at, is the time to remove all distraction and confusion of mind, train oneself to concentrate in prayer, and rectify the blemish of the covenant, since nothing disrupts the mind like that flaw, and its repair restores clarity of thought, which is what Israel brings to bear when they sound the shofar on Rosh Hashanah to arouse the supernal attribute of da'at and silence the accusers.

Likkutei Sichos 2, Shoftim 1 concludes, on our reading of the cited page, that Elul functions as a spiritual city of refuge accessible to every Jew regardless of circumstance, offering protection and the possibility of complete spiritual transformation through teshuvah and Torah study.

Isaiah 55:6–7

Isaiah 55:6-7

The prophet calls Israel to seek God while He is near, abandon destructive ways, and return in the confidence of divine mercy; the passage directly articulates the teshuvah orientation of Elul.

Seek GOD while you can, Call out while [God] is near. Let the wicked give up their ways, The sinful, their plans; Let each one turn back to GOD So as to be pardoned; To our God, Who freely forgives.

Nehemiah 1:4–11

Nehemiah 1:4-11

Nehemiah responds to communal brokenness through mourning, fasting, confession, remembrance of the covenant, and concrete responsibility—an important biblical paradigm for Elul’s personal and communal teshuvah.

When I heard that, I sat and wept, and was in mourning for days, fasting and praying to the God of Heaven. Let Your ear be attentive and Your eyes open to receive the prayer of Your servant that I am praying to You now, day and night, on behalf of the Israelites, Your servants, confessing the sins that we Israelites have committed against You, sins that I and my father’s house have committed.

Psalms 27:4

Psalms 27:4

David’s single-minded desire to dwell in God’s presence and behold His beauty provides a scriptural model for Elul’s intensified longing, prayer, and spiritual focus.

One thing I ask of GOD, only that do I seek: to live in GOD’s house all the days of my life, to gaze upon GOD’s beauty, to frequent the temple.

Rosh Hashanah 18a

Rosh Hashanah 18a:12

The passage presents the annual judgment of individuals and communities while emphasizing that repentance, prayer, and charity can avert a severe decree—the classic triad of Elul preparation.

§ The Gemara asks: With regard to an individual, when is God near to him? Rabba bar Avuh said: These are the ten days between Rosh HaShana and Yom Kippur. The Gemara asks further: The verse states: “And it came to pass about ten days after that the Lord smote Nabal, and he died” (I Samuel 25:38). These ten days, what are they doing here, i.e., why was there a delay of ten days before Nabal died? Rav Yehuda said that Rav said: They correspond to the ten meals that Nabal gave the servants of David who came to visit him, as out of politeness he allowed David’s ten servants to eat, and therefore his punishment was delayed for ten days. Rav Naḥman said that Rabba bar Avuh said: These are the ten days between Rosh HaShana and Yom Kippur, during which everyone is given one last opportunity to repent for the sins he committed over the course of the previous year.

Berakhot 5a

Berakhot 5a:2

Rabbi Shimon ben Lakish teaches a graduated spiritual practice: one should constantly incite the good inclination against the evil inclination; if that fails, one should study Torah; if that fails, one should recite Shema; and if that fails, one should contemplate the day of death.

Incidental to the verse, “Tremble, and do not sin,” the Gemara mentions that Rabbi Levi bar Ḥama said that Rabbi Shimon ben Lakish said: One should always incite his good inclination against his evil inclination, i.e., that one must constantly struggle so that his evil inclination does not lead him to transgression, as it is stated: "Tremble, and do not sin." If one succeeds and subdues his evil inclination, excellent, but if he does not succeed in subduing it, he should study Torah, as alluded to in the verse: “Say to your heart.” If he subdues his evil inclination, excellent; if not, he should recite Shema, which contains the acceptance of the yoke of God, and the concept of reward and punishment, as it is stated in the verse: “Upon your bed,” which alludes to Shema, where it says: “When you lie down.” If he subdues his evil inclination, excellent; if not, he should remind himself of the day of death, whose silence is alluded to in the continuation of the verse: “And be still, Selah.”

In explanation of repentance and its principles Among the good things which God, may He be blessed, has bestowed upon His creations is the path which He prepared for them to ascend from the baseness of their actions, to escape the trap of their inequities, to hold their souls back from destruction and to remove His anger from upon them. Because of His goodness and uprightness, He has taught them and warned them to return to Him when they sin against Him - for He understands their nature, as it is stated (Psalms 25:8), "Good and upright is the Lord; therefore He shows sinners the way." [Even] if they greatly sin and rebel and act like treacherous betrayers - He does not close the doors of repentance to them, as it is stated (Isaiah 31:6), "Return, to Him to whom they have been so shamefully false." It is [also] stated (Jeremiah 3:22), "Turn back, O rebellious children, I will heal your afflictions." We are warned about repentance in several places in the Torah. It is explained that repentance is accepted even when the sinner repents because of his many troubles - how much more so [will it be accepted] if he returns because of fear or love of God - as it is stated (Deuteronomy 4:30), "When you are in distress because all these things have befallen you and, in the end, return to the Lord your God and obey Him." It is explained in the Torah that God will help those who repent beyond what their natural ability would allow; and that He renews a pure spirit within them, to reach great heights in His love - as it is stated (Deuteronomy 30:2), "And you return to the Lord your God, and you and your children heed His command with all your heart and soul, just as I enjoin upon you this day." Further, it is stated about the body of the matter (Deuteronomy 30:6), "Then the Lord, your God, will circumcise your heart and the hearts of your offspring," to acquire love for Him. And the Prophets and Writings constantly speak on the subject of repentance, such that the principles of repentance are all explained in their words, as will be explained. Now we will explain the principles of repentance. The first principle is regret: His heart should understand that leaving God is bad and bitter; and he should place into his heart that there is punishment, vengeance and repayment for iniquity, as it is stated (Deuteronomy 32:35), "To be My vengeance and repayment." And it is stated (Job 19:29), "Be in fear of the sword, for [your] fury is iniquity worthy of the sword." And he should regret his bad deeds and say in his heart, "What have I done? How did I not have fear of God in front of my eyes, and did not become afraid from the rebukes of iniquity and from the harsh judgments? For there are many aches [waiting] for the evildoer. I did not pity my body; and for a moment of pleasure, my eyes did not pity its being destroyed. I became like a man who robs and extorts, eats and is satiated; but who knows that after his eating and his drinking, the judge will grind his teeth with gravel - like the matter that is stated (Proverbs 20:17), 'but later his mouth will be filled with gravel.' And worse than this, I was cruel to the dear soul and I rendered it impure with the idols of my impulse. And what did it gain from all of its acquisitions, if they are bad in the eyes of its Master? And how did I trade a passing world for a world that exists for ever and ever? How have I become similar to animals? As I have gone after my impulse like a horse, like a mule that does not understand. And I have strayed from the way of the intellect. And behold the Creator blew a living soul into my nose - a wise heart and the benefit of intellect - in order to recognize Him and fear Him and to govern over the body and all of its actions, like it governs over the other animals that do not speak, because it is precious in His eyes. And though I was created like this, it has become the opposite of this in me. Why am I alive? It is like the matter that is stated (Proverbs 21:16), 'A man who strays from the path of the intellect will rest in the company of ghosts.' Moreover I have not [even] fulfilled the precept of the animal. Rather I have been lower than that. For the ox knows its master and the donkey the trough of its owner; whereas I have not known and not reflected. And I have sent my soul to be free from its master. So I have tasted my nectar, but forgotten my end. And I have stolen and extorted and trampled upon the indigent. I have not remembered the day of death, upon which nothing will remain before my soul besides my corpse and my dirt." And this matter that we have explained is that which Jeremiah, peace be upon him, had spoken, "No one regrets his wickedness and says, 'What have I done?'"

Mishneh Torah, Repentance 2:1–4

Mishneh Torah, Repentance 2:1-4

Teshuvah requires that a sinner abandon his transgression, regret his past deeds, resolve never to repeat them, and confess verbally; among its paths are constant crying out to God, giving charity, distancing himself from the object of sin, changing his name to symbolize transformation, completely altering his conduct toward righteousness, and going into exile, which atones by humbling and subduing his spirit.

What constitutes Teshuvah? That a sinner should abandon his sins and remove them from his thoughts, resolving in his heart, never to commit them again as [Isaiah 55:7] states "May the wicked abandon his ways...." Similarly, he must regret the past as [Jeremiah 31:19] states: "After I returned, I regretted." [He must reach the level where] He who knows the hidden will testify concerning him that he will never return to this sin again as [Hoshea 14:4] states: "We will no longer say to the work of our hands: `You are our gods.'" He must verbally confess and state these matters which he resolved in his heart. Among the paths of repentance is for the penitent to a) constantly call out before God, crying and entreating; b) to perform charity according to his potential; c) to separate himself far from the object of his sin; d) to change his name, as if to say "I am a different person and not the same one who sinned;" e) to change his behavior in its entirety to the good and the path of righteousness; and f) to travel in exile from his home. Exile atones for sin because it causes a person to be submissive, humble, and meek of spirit.

Mishneh Torah, Human Dispositions 1:7

Mishneh Torah, Human Dispositions 1:7

The Rambam presents teshuvah as restoring a person from an extreme disposition toward the middle path, offering Elul a practical framework of character repair rather than merely remorse.

How can one train himself to follow these temperaments to the extent that they become a permanent fixture of his [personality]? He should perform - repeat - and perform a third time - the acts which conform to the standards of the middle road temperaments.

Mesillat Yesharim 3

Mesillat Yesharim 3:12

The chapter develops the practice of zehirut—deliberate watchfulness and ongoing review of one’s actions—providing a classic mussar method for Elul’s cheshbon hanefesh.

I see a need for a man to be meticulous and weigh his ways each and every day like the great merchants who continuously evaluate all of their business matters in order that they not degenerate. He should fix definite times and hours for this weighing so that it not be haphazard but rather with the greatest regularity for it yields great results. And what is the counsel they give us? "Let us enter into an accounting, come and consider the accounting of the world". For they already experienced, saw and learned, that this alone is the true path leading a man to the good which he seeks, and that there is none other besides this.

Tomer Devorah 1:1

Rabbi Moshe Cordovero describes emulating God’s attributes of compassion and patience, especially bearing with others’ faults; this turns Elul teshuvah into interpersonal refinement as well as private repentance.

Chapter 1 - That it is fitting for a person to resemble his Creator: It is fitting for a person to resemble his Creator and then he will be [configured] in the secret of the Highest Form, [both] in image and likeness. As if he is alike in his body but not in his actions, he betrays the Form; and they will say about him, "A lovely form, but ugly deeds." As behold, the essence of the Highest Image and Likeness is His actions. And what will it benefit him to have the structure of his limbs like the Highest Form, but not resemble his Creator in his actions? Therefore it is fitting that he should [make his actions] resemble the actions of the Crown (Keter), which are the thirteen highest traits of mercy. And they are hinted to in the secret of the verses (Michah 7:18-20), "Who is a power like You; He will again have mercy on us; You shall give truth." If so, it is fitting that these thirteen traits [also] be found in man. And now we will explain these thirteen actions that are fitting to be with him. ‎The First: "Who is a power like You" instructs about the Holy One, blessed be He, being an insulted King [that] tolerates insult that is inconceivable. Behold, nothing is hidden from His oversight, without a doubt, and [yet] there is no moment ‎when a person is not nourished and preserved by the Highest force that flows upon him; and behold, you find that ‎there was never a person who sinned against God, without Him - at that very instant - [willing] the flow of his existence and the movement of his limbs. While this person sins with that force, He does not withhold it from him at all. Rather, the Holy One, blessed be He, tolerates such an insult - to flow the power for the movement of his ‎limbs into the person, and the person [uses] that power at that moment for sin and iniquity, and [to] anger ‎[Him]; and the Holy One, blessed be He, tolerates [it]. And you [should] not say that He is not able to withhold this goodness from him - God forbid. As behold, it is in His power to make his arms and legs rigid instantly, like His word - similar to what He did to Yerovam (I Kings 13:4). And even with all this, that He has the power in His hand to withdraw that flowing force, ‎and He could have said, "Since you sin against Me, sin with your own [strength], not with Mine" - He ‎does not withhold good from a person for this. Instead, He tolerates the insult, flows the force [to do this] ‎and gives the person of His goodness. Behold, this is insult and [its] toleration that cannot be told. And for this, the ministering angels call the Holy One, blessed be He, the insulted King. And this is [the meaning of] its stating, "Who is a power like You" - You ‎are a Power that is a Master of Kindness that benefits, a Power that is a Master of strength to take revenge and ‎take back what is Yours; and with all that, You tolerate [it] and are insulted until [the person] repents. Behold, this is a ‎trait that a person must practice - I mean tolerance; and, so, to be insulted, even to this extent, and nonetheless not to ‎withhold one’s goodness from the recipient.‎

Peri Tzadik, Rosh Chodesh Elul 3:3

According to all opinions, those who repent in Tishrei will be redeemed, and for this purpose the month of Elul was created—with the letter Yud corresponding to the repair of action through wisdom (the statement "let there be light," which represents Torah, paralleling the five books of Torah with five utterances of light)—so that after Elul provides the means to correct action according to wisdom, one will be aligned with the divine thought in which God created humanity upright.

Kitzur Shulchan Arukh 128:1

Kitzur Shulchan Arukh 128:1

The period from Rosh Chodesh Elul through Yom Kippur constitutes days of Divine favor especially suited for repentance, commemorating Moshe's ascent to Mount Sinai on Rosh Chodesh Elul and his descent on the tenth of Tishrei with atonement completed; in most communities the custom is to fast and recite Yom Kippur Katan prayers on the day before Rosh Chodesh Elul (or on Thursday if Rosh Chodesh falls on Shabbos) to prepare spiritually for repentance. The Ari taught that the word Elul itself—formed from the acronym of "if he did not lie in ambush but Hashem made it happen, then I will provide"—indicates this month as a favorable time for accepting repentance for the year's sins, including inadvertent ones, with additional mystical allusions found in various Torah verses.

Shulchan Arukh, Orach Chayim 581:1-2

We have the custom to get up at the break of dawn to recite Selichot and tachanunim from Rosh Chodesh Elul until Yom Kippur. Rema: The minhag of Ashkenazi Jews is not like that. Instead from Rosh Chodesh on we blow the Shofar after Shacharith, and there are some places where they also blow the Shofar after Arvit. We get up at dawn to recite Selichot from the Sunday before Rosh HaShanah on; and if Rosh HaShanah falls on a Monday or Tuesday, we begin reciting Selichot from Sunday the week before Rosh HaShanah. It is forbidden for a mourner to leave his house in order to hear the Selichot at the synagogue, except on the eve of Rosh HaShanah when we extend the Selichot. On that day, the mourner can go to synagogue (Piskei Mahar"i chapter 133). It is important to search for a prayer leader for Selichot and the Days of Awe who is most fit, one who is learned and does good deeds. He should be at least thirty and married. However, any Jew is kosher for this role, as long as he is liked by the community. If he took the role by force, we do not respond "Amen" to him. He has to be able to fulfill everybody's obligation. If he has an enemy (note: one who hates him) and intends not to fulfill his obligation, even those who like him do not fulfill their obligations (Hagahot and Minhagim Yeshanim). There are places where the person who leads Selichot leads all of that day's prayers (Kol Bo). We have the custom to fast on the eve of Rosh Hashana Rema: And those that are exacting are accustomed to fast every one of the ten days. (Mordecai end of first Perek Rosh Hashana) And such is correct to do. And all these fasts are not necessary to do, and they are not announced on Monday and Thursday, even the (fast of) the eve of Rosh Hashana. If there is a circumcision on the eve of Rosh Hashana, one may eat. And most people are accustomed to eat on the eve of Rosh Hashana before daybreak; because the non-Jews are accustomed to fast on the eve of their holidays.

Shenei Luchot HaBerit, Aseret HaDibrot, Rosh HaShanah, Ner Mitzva:2

Israel customarily fasted from the beginning of Elul until Yom Kippur, during which days selichot and tachanunei are recited, as it is fitting that in this final month of the year one should repent for transgressions committed throughout the year and not enter Rosh Hashanah, the day of judgment, tainted by one's misdeeds, but rather correct in this month what has passed.

The month of Elul is indicated by the verse "I am for my beloved and my beloved is for me" (acrostic spelling Elul), and during this month the thirteen attributes of mercy are revealed to Israel through their arousal of repentance, with the distinctive feature of Elul being that this revelation occurs through the awakening and initiative of Israel themselves.

Shabbos being a sign between Hashem and Bnei Yisrael. Hashem is content with Bnei Yisrael testifying to Him, as it says, "This nation I have created to say my praises" and "You are my witnesses." Out of their goodness, Bnei Yisrael turn all creation toward Hashem. However, during these times of closeness at the end of the year, one must connect everything to its upper root. Throughout the year, we become tainted by sins due to the influence of evildoers. Therefore, we need to focus on saving ourselves first, as in the principle "your life comes first." This is why Elul's focus is different from the rest of the year. "Ani ledodi" (I am to my beloved) is unique to Elul, emphasizing separation from the world and focusing solely on Hashem. This is hinted at by Elul being the new year for tithing the flock, indicating that all worldly matters have a higher purpose. Man has a role in repairing the world, but during Elul, one must distance oneself from worldly matters to fulfill "I am to my beloved." We must remember that we are created solely to serve Hashem. In Elul, we achieve "I am to my beloved," and through this, we merit "my beloved is to me" in Tishrei, which brings life and holiness for the entire year. The month of Elul is a time for repentance, preceding Rosh HaShana, when we proclaim Hashem’s dominion. The Zohar (3:108:1) explains that one who is bound by negative forces cannot fully accept the yoke of Heaven. Therefore, during Elul, we must free ourselves from these influences to accept Hashem’s yoke. This is symbolized by the zodiac sign Virgo, representing pure service to Hashem. Similarly, the command to destroy Amalek before the mitzvah of bikurim (first fruits) signifies removing obstacles to fully dedicate our lives to Hashem’s service.

Shem MiShmuel, Shoftim 6:19

Shem MiShmuel, Shoftim 6:19

Elul corresponds to the period before Rosh Hashanah, when the princes of the nations come and accuse (according to midrash), necessitating arousal of the upper attribute of da'at through the settling of Israel's da'at below; the shofar blasts accomplish this by establishing clarity of mind (as indicated by "happy are the people who know the sound"—emphasizing knowledge/settledness rather than mere sounding), which awakens the upper da'at and removes the accusation. Elul and its shofar blasts are thus meant to prepare the heart through mental settledness, eliminating confusion and training Israel to direct intention in prayer; Elul is the sixth month corresponding to yesod ascending to da'at, and since covenant breach confuses da'at most severely, and Elul rectifies covenant breach, those who achieve this rectification merit settledness of da'at as preparation for Rosh Hashanah, enabling Israel to prevail in judgment.

Likkutei Sichos 2, Shoftim 1

The month of Elul functions as a spiritual city of refuge where Jews can achieve atonement through repentance and Torah study, accessible to all regardless of their circumstances or location.

In this sichaThe passage explains that the month of Elul serves as a spiritual 'City of Refuge' (Ir Miklat) where any Jew can find safety and achieve atonement through repentance (Teshuvah) and Torah study. While physical cities of refuge only functioned in the Land of Israel, the spiritual refuge of Elul is accessible everywhere, even to those involved in worldly affairs or those already dedicated to full-time study. This period enables a complete spiritual transformation, shielding a person from negative influences and facilitating a sincere return to God.

Likutei Moharan 282

Likutei Moharan 282:2

Rabbi Nachman teaches the practice of finding and articulating one’s נקודות טובות, positive points; this supplies an Elul discipline of hope and constructive self-examination rather than despair.

2. Likewise, a person must find [some good point] within himself. It is known that a person must take care to be happy always and to keep very far away from depression {as has been explained in our works a number of times}. It may be that when he begins examining himself, he sees that he possesses no good whatsoever and is filled with sin, and that as a result the Evil One wants to push him into depression and sadness, God forbid. Even so, it is forbidden to fall on account of this. Rather, he must search until he finds in himself some little bit of good. For how is it possible that throughout his life he never once did some mitzvah or good deed? And even if when he begins examining this good thing he sees that it, too, is filled with flaws and contains no purity—i.e., he sees that the mitzvah or holy deed that he merited doing is itself comprised of impure motives, external thoughts and numerous faults—nevertheless, how is it possible that this mitzvah or holy deed contains not even a little bit of good? For in any case, despite this there must have been some good point in the mitzvah or good deed that he did. Thus, a person has to search and seek to find in himself some little bit of good in order to revive himself and to attain joy, as explained above. By searching until he finds a remaining little bit of good in himself, he genuinely moves from the scale of guilt to the scale of merit and can return [to God] in repentance. This, in the aspect of “In yet a little bit the wicked man is not; you will reflect upon his place and he will not be there,” as explained above.

Tanya, Part I; Likkutei Amarim 29

Tanya, Part I; Likkutei Amarim 29:1

The Alter Rebbe addresses the heaviness and self-disgust that can obstruct divine service, directing the person toward honest spiritual struggle and renewed vitality—an important balance for Elul introspection.

There is yet an additional aspect that the benonim must contend with, namely, that occasionally and even frequently they experience a dullness of the heart, which becomes like a stone, and the person is unable, try as he might, to open his heart to the “service of the heart,” namely, prayer. Also, at times, he is unable to wage war against the evil impulse, so as to sanctify himself in the things that are permissible, because of the heaviness that is in his heart. Therefore one must crush it and cast it down to the ground, that is to say, by setting aside appointed times for humbling oneself and considering oneself despicable and contemptible, as is written, “A broken heart, a broken spirit”—this is the sitra achara, which is the very man himself in benonim (intermediates), in whose heart the vital soul which animates the body is in its native strength; hence it is the very man himself.

The avoda of Elul is to generate enthusiasm and increase acts of strengthening oneself, moving from a state of spiritual laxity toward fortification; the practice of increasing scrupulousness in mitzvah details during the Ten Days of Repentance—even in observances one neglects during the rest of the year—teaches the path of teshuva, for through great enthusiasm one must strengthen oneself and multiply good deeds and precise mitzvah performance, which reshapes one's ways and opens the heart to genuine repentance, allowing one first to reach the "na'ase" (doing) of increased acts and then to ascend to "nishma" (hearing), and only through such strengthening can one enter before the King through the gates of teshuva.
