What the sources say

The foundational framework is laid by the Rambam (Mishneh Torah, Blessings 8:1-5), who rules that tree fruit receives borey pri ha'etz, earth fruit receives borey pri ha'adamah, and things that do not grow from the ground — meat, eggs, milk, and the like — receive shehakol; the brachah on an acai bowl therefore turns on what its primary ingredient is and how it has been processed.

The Arukh HaShulchan (Orach Chaim 202:24) establishes, drawing from the Gemara, that when dates are mashed into a paste-like consistency they retain their status and still receive borey pri ha'etz, because — in the Gemara's language — "they remain in their original state"; he extends this explicitly to all fruit, meaning fruit that is blended or mashed for a bowl does not automatically forfeit its original brachah.

Where the bowl contains multiple components with different blessings, the Mishnah Berurah (202:8) rules that whichever ingredient constitutes the majority is the primary item and its brachah covers the secondary items, so identifying the dominant fruit or base is essential.

Should genuine doubt remain about the correct brachah after applying these principles, the Shulchan Arukh (Orach Chayim 204) rules simply that anything whose brachah is uncertain should receive shehakol.

Berakhot 39a

Berakhot 39a:6

Develops the principle of ikar and tafel—primary and subordinate foods—relevant to deciding whether toppings are covered by the blessing on the principal component of the bowl.

The Gemara attempts to infer from this story to the topic at hand: What? Is it not that they disagreed with regard to the following? The one who recited the blessing over the pullet first held that the blessing to be recited over both boiled vegetables and pullet is: By whose word all things came to be, and, therefore, that which he prefers takes precedence and is eaten first. The one who ridiculed him held that over boiled vegetables one recites: Who creates fruit of the ground, and over pullet one recites: By whose word all things came to be, and, therefore, the fruit takes precedence, as its blessing is more specific and therefore more significant. The Gemara rejects this explanation: No, everyone agrees that over boiled vegetables and pullet one recites: By whose word all things came to be, and here they argue over this: This Sage, who recited the blessing, held that the food which is preferred takes precedence and one recites a blessing over it first, and the Sage who ridiculed him held: Cabbage takes precedence, as it nourishes. On a similar note, Rav Ashi said: When we were in the study hall of Rav Kahana, he said to us: Over a cooked dish of beets to which they, typically, do not add a significant amount of flour, one recites: Who creates fruit of the ground. Over a cooked dish of turnips to which they, typically, add a more significant amount of flour, one recites: Who creates the various types of nourishment. And Rav Kahana reconsidered his previous statement and said: Over both these, beets, and those, turnips, one recites: Who creates fruit of the ground, and the fact that they threw extra flour in with the turnips, they did so merely so the components of the cooked dish would stick together. The primary ingredient in the dish remains the turnips, not the flour.

Berakhot 41b

Berakhot 41b:4

Discusses the order of precedence among blessings and the rules for mixed foods, supplying an important Talmudic basis for determining which blessing should be said first.

With regard to the halakhot of precedence in blessings, the Gemara relates: Rav Ḥisda and Rav Hamnuna were sitting at a meal. They brought dates and pomegranates before them. Rav Hamnuna took and recited a blessing over the dates first. Rav Ḥisda said to him: Does the Master not hold that halakha which Rav Yosef, and some say Rabbi Yitzḥak, said: Each food that precedes the others in this verse, precedes the others in terms of blessing as well? The pomegranate precedes the date in that verse. It was stated: If they brought figs and grapes before them during a meal, what blessings need to be recited? Rav Huna said: They require a blessing before eating them, and do not require a blessing after eating them, as Grace after Meals exempts them. And so too, Rav Naḥman said: They require a blessing before eating them, and do not require a blessing after eating them. And Rav Sheshet said: They require a blessing both before eating them and after eating them, even if he ate them during the meal, as you have nothing which requires a blessing before eating it and does not require a blessing after eating it, because it is exempted by Grace after Meals, except bread, a sweetened and spiced pastry, that comes as dessert, as it, too, is a type of bread. The statements of both Rav Huna and Rav Sheshet disagree with the opinion of Rabbi Ḥiyya, as Rabbi Ḥiyya said: Bread exempts all the types of food that one eats after it, and wine exempts all types of drinks that one drinks after it, and one need not recite a blessing either before or after eating them. Summarizing, Rav Pappa said that the halakha is: Food items that come due to the meal, which are eaten together with the bread as part of the meal, during the meal, neither require a blessing before eating them nor after eating them, as they are considered secondary to the bread. And food items like fruit, that do not come due to the meal, as part of the meal, but may be brought during the meal, require a blessing before eating them and do not require a blessing after eating them. If they come after the meal, they require a blessing both before eating them and after eating them.

Mishneh Torah, Blessings 8:1-5

Sets out Rambam’s framework for the blessings on the five species, fruits of trees, produce of the ground, and other foods, providing the foundational classification relevant to acai and toppings.

[When partaking of] all fruit that grows on trees, we recite the blessing borey pri ha'etz beforehand, and borey nefashot rabbot... afterward. An exception is made regarding the five species of fruit mentioned in the Torah: grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives, and dates. The single blessing that includes the three [blessings of grace] is recited after them. [When partaking of] fruit that grows from the earth and vegetables, we recite the blessing borey pri ha'adamah beforehand and borey nefashot rabbot afterward. [When partaking of] foods that do not grow from the earth - e.g., meat, cheese, fish, eggs, water, milk, honey, and the like - we recite the blessing, shehakol beforehand and borey nefashot rabbot afterward. When a person drinks water for an intention other than fulfilling his thirst, it is not necessary for him to recite a blessing beforehand or afterward. When fruits and vegetables that are usually eaten raw are cooked or stewed, one should recite the blessings shehakol beforehand and borey nefashot afterward. [Conversely,] when one eats vegetables that are usually eaten cooked - e.g., cabbage or turnips - raw, one should recite the blessings shehakol beforehand and borey nefashot afterward. When one eats them cooked or stewed, one should recite the blessings borey pri ha'adamah beforehand and borey nefashot afterward. When foods are commonly eaten both raw and cooked, regardless of whether one eats them raw or cooked, one should recite the blessing appropriate for them: i.e., if they are fruit that grows on trees, borey pri ha'etz; if they are fruits that grow from the ground or vegetables, borey pri ha'adamah.

Tur, Orach Chayim 202

On all tree fruits—whether from the seven species or other kinds—the initial blessing is "borei pri ha'etz," except wine which requires "borei pri hagafen"; regarding grapes specifically, when they are still unripe (boser) and have not reached the stage of "kfuli halavan" (double white), the blessing is "borei pri ha'etz" (since any growth on the tree that is not the primary fruit receives this blessing), but once they reach the stage of "kfuli halavan" onward, the blessing is "borei pri ha'etz," and if one is uncertain whether they have reached this stage, the blessing is "borei pri ha'etz," since one who recites "borei pri ha'etz" on tree fruit has fulfilled the obligation.

Rif Berakhot 24b:7

Tree fruits require the blessing borei pri ha'etz, produce of the earth requires borei pri ha'adamah (except bread, which requires hamotzi lechem min ha'aretz), and vegetables require borei pri ha'adamah (though Rabbi Yehudah says borei minei desha'im), with these blessings required both before and after eating.

Arukh HaShulchan, Orach Chaim 202

Arukh HaShulchan, Orach Chaim 202:24

Clarifies the practical order of blessings and the treatment of mixtures and principal ingredients in contemporary-style eating situations.

Shulchan Arukh, Orach Chayim 211

Shulchan Arukh, Orach Chayim 211:1

Covers the blessing on foods eaten for nourishment or other purposes and related rules that can affect mixed preparations and secondary ingredients.

1. The laws of precedence in blessings over fruit, comprising six sections: If several types of fruit are before him and their blessings are equal, and among them is one of the seven species, he gives precedence to the seven species even if it is not as beloved to him as the other type; and if none of them are from the seven species, he gives precedence to whichever he finds most beloved; but if their blessings are not equal, even if one of them is from the seven species, such as a radish and an olive, he may give precedence to whichever one he wishes, even if it is not the beloved one; and there are those who say that even in this case he must give precedence to the beloved one; and "beloved" means the type that is generally beloved to him, even if at this moment he actually desires the other type. 3. If they brought before him something whose blessing is Borei Pri HaEtz and something whose blessing is Shehakol, Borei Pri HaEtz takes precedence because it is the more distinguished blessing, since Shehakol does not exempt anything except for that one item; and likewise if they brought Borei Pri HaAdama and Shehakol, Borei Pri HaAdama takes precedence; and if they brought before him Borei Pri HaEtz and Borei Pri HaAdama, he may give precedence to whichever he wishes; and there are those who say that Borei Pri HaEtz takes precedence.

Arukh HaShulchan, Orach Chaim 204:8

If a produce of the ground has exited the category of spoilage, even when its cooking is not complete, the blessing is "Ha'adamah"; the author questions those who rule that for all ground produce whose cooking is not finished the blessing is "Shehakol," arguing instead that uncookedground produce should be blessed "Ha'adamah" just as unripe tree fruit receives "Ha'etz," with no reason to differentiate between tree fruit and ground produce in this regard.

Mishnah Berurah 204

Mishnah Berurah 204:9

A tree that was never intentionally planted for human consumption of its tender branches is blessed with shehakol rather than the specific bracha, since the tree was meant to harden and produce fruit; regarding legumes, some authorities distinguish between garden legumes eaten raw (which receive al haperos) and field legumes dried before cooking (which receive shehakol), though many later authorities reject this distinction and bless wet legumes with al haperos, and the widespread custom follows this approach; produce that has not completed its ripening process and is suitable for eating drops from al haperos to shehakol.

When fruit has not yet reached the stage of "white doubling," one recites the generic blessing (she-hakol nihiyeh bidvaro) rather than the specific fruit blessing (borei peri ha-etz); however, once fruit reaches full maturity, the specific blessing applies immediately, and if one mistakenly recited the generic blessing on such fruit, one fulfills one's obligation according to the mishnah.

Arukh HaShulchan, Orach Chaim 204:1

Arukh HaShulchan, Orach Chaim 204:1

On items that do not grow from the earth, such as meat of domesticated and wild animals, fowl, fish, eggs, milk, cheese—one blesses "shehakol nihyeh bidvaro" (the general blessing for all things in the world), since although all animals are nourished from the ground, their growth does not originate from the earth.
