'אכל תשברו מאתם בכסף *ואכלתם* וגם מים תכרו מאתם בכסף *ושתיתם*' — once we are told to *buy* food and water, isn't 'and you shall eat / and you shall drink' redundant?

HaKtav VeHaKabalah, Deuteronomy 2:1

Q — 'אכל תשברו מאתם בכסף *ואכלתם* וגם מים תכרו מאתם בכסף *ושתיתם*' — once we are told to *buy* food and water, isn't 'and you shall eat / and you shall drink' redundant?

A — HaKtav VeHaKabbalah reads the surplus verbs as encoding a *negative*: don't stockpile, don't take supplies for the road. Whatever you buy from Esav, *consume it immediately* while passing through. Why? Because you have the manna and Miriam's well — you don't need road provisions. So why buy anything from them at all? Rashi (v. 7) supplies the reason: 'לא תכפו את טובתו להראות כאלו אתם עניים אלא הראו עצמכם עשירים' — display Hashem's blessing publicly, don't act like paupers in front of Esav. HaKtav weaves the two verses together: buy and consume immediately = a public demonstration of wealth without need, a kiddush Hashem along the route.
