Kiddush Requirements for Shalosh Seudos

The sources address whether Kiddush over wine must be recited before the third Shabbat meal (shalosh seudos) and what the halachic requirements for this meal are. While three meals on Shabbat are obligatory, Kiddush is not required at the third meal; bread is the essential component, with the meal ideally including meat and wine according to one's means.

What the sources say

The basic halacha codified by Shulchan Arukh, Orach Chayim 291:4-5 is that it is not necessary to recite Kiddush at shalosh seudos, but one must break bread over two loaves, and Mishnah Berurah 291:18 explains the reason: since day and night are compared regarding Kiddush, and at night one recitation suffices for all the night meals, so too by day one recitation at shacharit suffices for all the day meals, including the third. Shulchan Arukh HaRav, Orach Chayim 291:6-8 states the same rule and reasoning, and Arukh HaShulchan, Orach Chaim 291:10-12 notes that although the Rambam's language in Mishneh Torah, Sabbath 30:9 implies that each of the three meals must be established over wine, the Gemara only knows of Kiddush recited once by day, and most poskim therefore understand the Rambam to mean merely that one should drink wine at the meal rather than recite formal Kiddush, though Arukh HaShulchan, Orach Chaim 291:10-12 records that the Kabbalists hold a cup of wine for Kiddush is indeed required even at the third meal.

As for bread, Shulchan Arukh, Orach Chayim 291:4-5 rules that one must use two loaves, though the Rema records a widespread lenient custom to use one whole loaf, while urging stringency to use two; Shulchan Shel Arba 1:46 similarly insists that actual bread is required at the third meal just as at the first two, rejecting the view that fruit suffices. Mishnah Berurah 291:18 explains that since the three meals are derived from three mentions of "today" in the pasuk concerning the manna, bread is required, though he also notes a dispute over whether one who used another food has fulfilled the obligation after the fact.

The broader obligation of three Shabbat meals itself is rooted in the Gemara at Shabbat 117b:11, which derives from the threefold repetition of "today" in the manna pasuk that a person is obligated to eat three meals on Shabbat, and this is codified by Mishneh Torah, Sabbath 30:9, Shulchan Arukh, Orach Chayim 291:1-2, and Tur, Orach Chayim 291, all of which stress great care in fulfilling this meal, citing the reward described in the name of Bar Kappara that one who keeps the three meals is saved from the pangs of Mashiach, the judgment of Gehinnom, and the wars of Gog and Magog, as also recorded by Arukh HaShulchan, Orach Chaim 291:1 and Mishnah Berurah 291:1-2.

Separately, the general law that Kiddush must be said in the place of the meal, drawn from Pesachim 101a:3 and codified in Shulchan Arukh, Orach Chayim 273:1 and Shulchan Arukh, Orach Chayim 273:3, governs the morning kiddush described in Shulchan Arukh, Orach Chayim 289:1-2 and Mishnah Berurah 289:3, and this principle is invoked in connection with the third meal by Shaarei Halacha uMinhag, Orach Chaim 154, which discusses fulfilling the third meal by eating mezonot after a Kiddush said in the meal's place.

Modern poskim address the practical question directly. Rav Mordechai Eliyahu (Maamar Mordechai Hilchot Shabbat, Chelek 1 21:18) rules that one does not recite Kiddush over wine before the third meal, but that it is proper to drink wine and recite HaGafen during the meal itself, citing the Shulchan Arukh and the Ben Ish Chai; and Responsa Rav Pealim, Volume II, Orach Chayim 54:1-2 likewise takes as settled that there is no Kiddush over wine at the third meal, while raising, per the teaching of the Ari, whether one should drink a cup of wine mid-meal if only enough for one cup is available, or save it for Birkat HaMazon.

Shaarei Halacha uMinhag, Orach Chaim 153 frames this as a machlokes among poskim over whether the third meal requires bread at all, some permitting fulfillment in another manner, a dispute also reflected in Avnei Yashfeh 5:36, which raises whether omitting bread might undermine the meal's status as a mitzvah meal even though several poskim permit fulfilling the third meal with any of the five grains per the Shulchan Arukh.

Nishmat Shabbat vol 1:131 distinguishes the third Shabbat meal from Yom Tov meals, noting that a view attributed to the Tur reads the Rambam as requiring Kiddush at the third meal, while Nishmat Shabbat vol 2:448 raises further practical questions about whether the one leading the third meal should recite the wine blessing aloud, whether Kiddush applies there at all, and whether the cup must be full and mostly consumed.

Rav Moshe Sternbuch (Teshuvos V'hanhagos 8:19) holds that Kiddush applies only before the second Shabbat meal, which requires some indication that it is held in honor of Shabbat, whereas the third meal carries no such requirement because it need not be a formal, established meal in the same sense.

Igros Moshe OC 4:63 analyzes the requirement that Kiddush be connected to the place of the meal, distinguishing between moving within a single house and moving between separate houses, and discussing whether an advance intention to eat elsewhere can still validate the Kiddush, concluding that eating in the very place of Kiddush is preferable lechatchila.

Responsa on this question

Igros Moshe (Igros Moshe OC 1:100) — Igros Moshe (OC 1:100) addresses whether wine alone constitutes a valid location for Kiddush and discusses the definition of a meal-place under halakha, but does not state a position on whether one must recite Kiddush at shalosh seudos or what the halachic requirements for that third meal are.

Pesachim 105a

Pesachim 105a:8-10

Defines Kiddush as connected with the meal and discusses the relationship between Kiddush and the Shabbat meals. This sugya supplies the Talmudic basis for Kiddush at the principal Shabbat meals, while the third meal has no parallel Kiddush enactment.

Ravina raised a dilemma before Rav Naḥman bar Yitzḥak: With regard to one who did not recite kiddush on Shabbat eve, i.e., on the night of Shabbat, what is the halakha with regard to his ability to recite kiddush at any time over the course of the entire day? May one recite kiddush later, or has he lost his opportunity by failing to recite kiddush at the proper time? Rav Naḥman bar Yitzḥak said to him: From the fact that the sons of Rabbi Ḥiyya say that one who did not recite havdala at the conclusion of Shabbat may recite havdala any time over the course of the entire week, it can be inferred that here too, one who did not recite kiddush on Shabbat eve may recite kiddush at any time over the course of the entire day. Ravina raised an objection to the opinion of Rav Naḥman bar Yitzḥak from the Tosefta: On the nights of Shabbat and the nights of a Festival there is a mitzva of kiddush over a cup. And there is a requirement to mention the sanctity of the day in Grace after Meals, i.e., the paragraph: May it please [retzei], on Shabbat and: May there rise and come [ya’aleh veyavo], on Festivals. On the day of Shabbat and Festivals, there is no mitzva of kiddush over a cup, but there is a requirement to mention the sanctity of the day in Grace after Meals. Ravina explains his objection: And if it could enter your mind to say that one who did not recite kiddush on Shabbat eve may recite kiddush any time over the course of the entire day, on Shabbat and a Festival too, it can be found that there is a mitzva of kiddush over a cup, for if one did not recite kiddush at night he may recite kiddush the following day. Rav Naḥman bar Yitzḥak said to him: The tanna does not teach cases of what if. In other words, the tanna does not take into consideration the uncommon circumstance of one who failed to recite kiddush on the night of Shabbat.

Shabbat 117b

Shabbat 117b:11

Derives the obligation of three meals on Shabbat from the threefold wording of the Torah's reference to 'today.' This is the central Talmudic source for the existence of seudah shelishit, though it does not require Kiddush at it.

We learned in the mishna that one may rescue food for three meals on Shabbat. How so? If a fire ignited before the meal on Shabbat evening, one rescues food for three meals; if a fire ignited Shabbat morning, he rescues food for two meals; if a fire ignited in the afternoon, he rescues food for one meal. With regard to meals on Shabbat, the Sages taught in a baraita: How many meals is a person obligated to eat on Shabbat? Three. Rabbi Ḥidka says: Four. Rabbi Yoḥanan said: And both of them derived their opinions from one verse: “And Moses said: Eat it today, for today is Shabbat for God, today you will not find it in the field” (Exodus 16:25). Rabbi Ḥidka holds: These three mentions of the word today allude to the number of meals on Shabbat besides the evening meal, as Moses spoke on Shabbat morning. And the Rabbis hold that these three mentions include the evening meal. We learned in the mishna: If a fire ignited on Shabbat evening,

Berakhot 20b

Berakhot 20b:8-10

Chachmei Bavel explain that women are obligated by Torah law in Kiddush because those included in Shabbat observance are also included in remembering Shabbat, as expressed by the verses “Remember” and “Observe.

Rav Adda bar Ahava said: Women are obligated to recite the sanctification of the Shabbat day [kiddush]by Torah law. The Gemara asks: Why? Kiddush is a time-bound, positive mitzva, and women are exempt from all time-bound, positive mitzvot. Abaye said: Indeed, women are obligated to recite kiddush by rabbinic, but not by Torah law. Rava said to Abaye: There are two refutations to your explanation. First, Rav Adda bar Ahava said that women are obligated to recite kiddush by Torah law, and, furthermore, the very explanation is difficult to understand. If the Sages do indeed institute ordinances in these circumstances, let us obligate them to fulfill all time-bound, positive mitzvot by rabbinic law, even though they are exempt by Torah law. Rather, Rava said: This has a unique explanation. In the Ten Commandments in the book of Exodus, the verse said: “Remember Shabbat and sanctify it” (Exodus 20:8), while in the book of Deuteronomy it is said: “Observe Shabbat and sanctify it” (Deuteronomy 5:12). From these two variants we can deduce that anyone included in the obligation to observe Shabbat by avoiding its desecration, is also included in the mitzva to remember Shabbat by reciting kiddush. Since these women are included in the mitzva to observe Shabbat, as there is no distinction between men and women in the obligation to observe prohibitions in general and to refrain from the desecration of Shabbat in particular, so too are they included in the mitzva of remembering Shabbat.

Jerusalem Talmud Shabbat 1:2

Jerusalem Talmud Shabbat 1:2

Chachmei Eretz Yisrael report a dispute over whether the statement that eating begins with washing the hands applies to Qidduš or to the benediction, illustrated by Rav’s declaration after washing that the meal had already begun.

“Nor start eating.” What is the start of eating? Rebbi Aha, Rebbi Abba in the name of Rebbi: When he washed his hands. Rebbi Aha said, this was said for Qidduš. Rebbi Abba said, this was said for the benediction. Rav had washed his hands when his son Hiyya gave a sign to the waiter, who wanted to serve him. He told him, we already started the meal.

Pesachim 101a

Pesachim 101a:3

Chachmei Bavel report Shmuel’s ruling that kiddush is valid only where the Shabbat meal is eaten, while moving to another place within the same house does not invalidate it.

And Shmuel follows his line of reasoning, as Shmuel said: There is no valid kiddush except in the place of one’s Shabbat meal. If one does not eat a meal in the location in which he recites kiddush, he has not fulfilled the mitzva of kiddush. The students understood from this statement that this halakha applies only when one goes from house to house and eats the Shabbat meal in a different house from the one in which he recited kiddush. But if one went from the place where he recited kiddush to another place in one house, no, there is no problem, and he has fulfilled the mitzva of kiddush.

Mishneh Torah, Sabbath 30:9

Rambam states that a person must eat three meals on Shabbat—one in the evening, one in the morning, and one in the afternoon—and describes the honor and delight of Shabbat that they express. The afternoon meal is not presented as requiring Kiddush.

Rambam continues the laws of Shabbat meals, emphasizing eating meat and drinking wine according to one's means and the broader obligation of Shabbat delight. It helps frame the meal's requirements without adding a third Kiddush.

Teshuvot haRashba Meyuchas LehaRamban 210

Teshuvot haRashba Meyuchas LehaRamban 210:1-2

Shlomo ibn Adret (Rashba) reports that shalosh seudos should be held after Mincha, preferably before Mincha Ketanah on Shabbat preceding Pesach, and that one need not recite a separate borei peri hagefen at the meal, while describing practices involving fruit, two loaves, and matzah or matzah enriched with fruit juice.

Shulchan Arukh, Orach Chayim 291:4-5

The governing law of the third Shabbat meal: one must eat three meals on Shabbat, and the third meal should be held after the morning meal. The meal requires bread when possible; Kiddush is not prescribed for seudah shelishit, unlike the Friday-night and Shabbat-morning meals.

Rema: Even if one partakes of many meals on Shabbos, it is necessary to have two loaves for every meal (Avudraham; Maimoni). There are, however, authorities who maintain that even for the third meal, it is sufficient to have one complete loaf [Tur; Mordechai]. Accordingly, it has become widespread custom in these countries to rule leniently and to break bread for the third meal on one whole loaf. But there is what to be stringent in, to take two (loaves). One must use bread. And there are those who say that one may use whatever food is made from the five types of grain (i.e. Wheat, barley, rye, oats, and spelt). And there are those who say that one may use things that go with bread, such as mean and fish, but not with fruit. There are some who say that even fruit may be used. The first opinion is the essence, that one must use bread unless he is really full. Rema: Or in a place where it is impossible for one to eat bread, like on Erev Pesach that falls on Shabbat, where it is forbidden to eat bread after Minchah, as was brought in the laws of Pesach [Mahar"il, Laws of Pesach].

Mishnah Berurah 291:18

Israel Meir Kagan (Chafetz Chaim) states that Kiddush over wine is not required before shalosh seudos, though two loaves are required; the meal should ideally be held with bread and two loaves, with delicacies added according to one’s means, while some opinions allow other foods post facto.

Arukh HaShulchan, Orach Chaim 291

Arukh HaShulchan, Orach Chaim 291:10-12

Provides a systematic treatment of the laws of the third meal: its biblical derivation, appropriate timing, bread, and the circumstances in which other foods may suffice. It does not require a separate Kiddush for this meal.

Shulchan Arukh, Orach Chayim 272

Shulchan Arukh, Orach Chayim 272:9

Sets the governing law of Kiddush at the Friday-night meal, including the requirement that Kiddush be recited in the place of the meal. Its placement alongside Orach Chayim 291 clarifies that Kiddush is specifically attached to the night meal, not repeated at seudah shelishit.

Wherever wine is uncommon, there are those who say we may say Kiddush over liquor and other beverages, except for water. And there are those who say we cannot say Kiddush over these. According to the Rosh, on Friday night, one should say Kiddush over bread and not liquor; and on Saturday, it is better to say Kiddush over liquor, so that they will bless "SheHaKol" before "HaMotzi", because if one said Kiddush over bread initialy, there would be no change here (from the Friday night blessing). And these are reasonable words. Rema: And the simple custom is according to the words of the Rosh. And if there is wine in the town, one should not say Kiddush over bread. And someone who doesn't drink wine on account of a vow, they should bless over the wine and the others sitting with them should drink; but if there are not others with them, they should say Kiddush over bread and not wine; or that person can listen to others say Kiddush (and answer Amen).

Shulchan Arukh, Orach Chayim 289:1-2

Joseph Karo’s passage requires Kiddush over wine before the Shabbos morning meal, in the meal’s location and before eating, while permitting water before prayer; where wine is unavailable, significant beverages other than water may be used, and if none are available, one may eat without Kiddush.

The Sequence of the Shabbos Morning Meal, 2 Seifim: The table should be set, the couch on which one eats should be spread in an attractive manner, and a cloth spread over the bread, as was done for the night meal. One should bless the wine with Borei Pri HaGafen, which is called Kiddusha Rabbah. Afterwards, one should wash his hands (see Siman 271, Seif 12 in the Rama), breaks the two loaves of bread (Lechem Mishneh) like at night, and then feasts. This kiddush must also be in the location of the meal, and one may not taste or eat at all prior to it, like with the night time kiddush. And if one drinks water in the morning before praying, it is permitted, because the obligation of kiddush does not yet apply to him. Rema: See above for all the laws of kiddush, Siman 271, 272, 273. In a place where wine is not readily available, liquor and other drinks, except for water, are considered significant (Chamar Medinah), and one may recite kiddush over them. If one does not have even liquor and other drinks, one may eat without kiddush.

Mishnah Berurah 289

Mishnah Berurah 289:3

Israel Meir Kagan (Chafetz Chaim) explains that Kiddusha Rabba is a rabbinic enactment for honoring Shabbat rather than a Torah obligation, and that one who lacks bread may eat without Kiddush rather than forgo oneg Shabbat; at night, one who lacks bread and wine may likewise eat available food, with specific waiting and later Kiddush provisions.

Responsa Rav Pealim, Volume II, Orach Chayim 54:1-2

Yosef Hayyim rules that when only one cup of wine is available for the third meal, it should be reserved for Birkat HaMazon, whose cup is more obligatory than drinking wine during the meal, even though the latter mitzvah comes earlier in time.

Arukh HaShulchan, Orach Chaim 291:1-2

Arukh HaShulchan, Orach Chaim 291:1-2

Yechiel Michel Epstein states that one must eat three Shabbat meals, preferably consuming more than a kebeitzah of bread at the third meal, though a kezayit suffices in pressing circumstances; if one cannot eat at all, one is not obligated to distress oneself, and should avoid overeating at the morning meal so as to leave room for the third meal.

Shulchan Arukh, Orach Chayim

Shulchan Arukh, Orach Chayim 273:3

Joseph Karo’s passage states that Kiddush is not fulfilled without eating a meal, and that one must eat immediately in the place where Kiddush was recited, although bread or a sufficient amount of wine can establish Kiddush in that place even if the meal is completed elsewhere, whereas fruit does not.

If one makes kiddush but does not eat a meal (afterwards), even regarding kiddush he has not fulfilled his obligation. Rema: One must eat in the place one makes kiddush. However anyway, even if one eats in the place that kiddush was recited, one has not fulfilled (one's obligation). (Mahar"i) If it was his intention to not eat there immediately, and then he went and ate, he has fulfilled his obligation. (Beis Yosef, end of the Siman). 5. The Geonim wrote that this - that Kiddush may be recited only in the place of one’s meal, even if one ate something small or drank a cup of wine that required a blessing over it, has fulfilled his obligation regarding kiddush at the place of the meal, and finishes one's meal in another place; and specifically if one ate bread or drank wine. But if one ate fruits, no (he does not fulfill his obligation). RAMA: Because of this, it was permissible for a mohel and a sandak to drink from the cup of the bris on Shabbat in the morning if they drank a shiur [Beis Yosef]. But it is the custom to give it to the baby [Hagahos Maimoni Chapter 29]

Responsa Rav Pealim, Volume II, Orach Chayim 46:1-3

Yosef Hayyim explains that a fixed prayer or request composed for everyone and recited every Shabbat is treated like an established liturgy and is permitted despite the prohibition against requesting personal needs on Shabbat, whereas individually formulated requests for one’s current needs are prohibited; he applies this distinction to the debated ending of the יהא רעוא text.

Yaakov Chaim Sofer states that shalosh seudos should preferably be eaten with bread, but one who omitted the mention of Shabbat in the Grace after Meals need not repeat it because of the uncertainty involved in reciting an unnecessary blessing.

Shulchan Arukh HaRav, Orach Chayim 188:15

The passage states that at Shabbat’s third meal one does not repeat Birkat HaMazon after beginning “HaTov VeHaMetiv,” since some hold that bread is not required, though this concern is weaker; on the third meal of Yom Tov, all agree one does not repeat because it is optional. If one remembers before beginning “HaTov VeHaMetiv,” one says the appropriate insertion for Shabbat or Yom Tov, even at a fourth meal.

Rav Eliezer Melamed (Peninei Halakhah, Shabbat 7:2)

Peninei Halakhah, Shabbat 7:2

The passage states that the mitzvah of three Shabbat meals requires the first at night, the second on Shabbat morning until midday, and the third from half an hour after midday until sunset; one who eats the third meal earlier has not fulfilled the obligation.

Maamar Mordechai Hilchot Shabbat, Chelek 1 21:18

Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu states that one does not recite Kiddush over wine before the third meal, but it is preferable to drink wine during the meal and recite the blessing “borei peri hagafen”; he also notes a view requiring each of the three meals to be established over wine.

Maamar Mordechai Hilchot Shabbat, Chelek 1 21:5

Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu notes a dispute over whether to eat seudah shelishit before or after Mincha, but rules that it should be eaten after Mincha and that no additional meal beforehand is necessary.
