The Spiritual Work of Rosh Hashanah in Breslov

Breslov teachings on Rosh Hashanah emphasize awakening, teshuvah, and the recognition of divine sovereignty through the shofar's call. These sources present the holiday as a day of spiritual reckoning and renewal, grounded in biblical psalms, rabbinic foundations, and Rebbe Nachman's distinctive understanding of the day's inner work.

What the sources say

The Torah designates Rosh Hashanah as a "day of teruah" (Bamidbar 29:1), and the Gemara explains that the three liturgical sections — Malkhuyot, Zikhronot, and Shofarot — are recited so that God will be crowned as King, so that Israel's remembrance will rise before Him for good, and so that the shofar will carry that remembrance upward (Rosh Hashanah 16a), a framework that the Gemara (Berakhot 12b) reinforces by requiring the unique formulation "HaMelekh HaKadosh" and "HaMelekh HaMishpat" throughout the Ten Days of Repentance, as codified in Shulchan Arukh, Orach Chayim 582:1.

The Rambam hears in the shofar's blast a summons to inner awakening — "Arise, O sleepers, from your sleep; examine your deeds and return in teshuvah; remember your Creator" — directed at those who have been lost in the vanities of time (Mishneh Torah, Repentance 3:4), and the Rambam further teaches that while teshuvah and supplication are beneficial at all times, the Ten Days from Rosh Hashanah to Yom Kippur are a uniquely propitious moment when repentance is accepted immediately (Mishneh Torah, Repentance 2:6).

Rebbe Nachman of Breslov identified Rosh Hashanah as the singular axis of his entire path, declaring that "all of my concern is only Rosh Hashanah" and insisting that every follower who was close to him must be present with him on that day without exception (Chayei Moharan 403).

In Likutei Moharan II:1, Rebbe Nachman opens with the verse "Tiku vachodesh shofar" (Tehillim 81), and in Likutei Moharan II:5, he develops the idea that Rosh Hashanah corresponds to the rectification of faith — "Your faith in the assembly of the holy ones" — whereby all the holy communities gather and the scattered sparks of emunah are collected together, producing a rectification of the intellects (mochin), which is the deeper meaning of the word "rosh": the head that is made and rectified on this day.

Likutei Moharan II:1:14 extends this by teaching that it is precisely when a person refrains from sitting in judgment over his fellow — recognizing that judgment belongs to God alone — that he becomes capable of "making" Rosh Hashanah properly, since the day is yoma de-dina and God's mercy is manifest in the very fact that He established such a day of reckoning for us.

The prayer-companion to these teachings, Likutei Tefilot I:54, translates the Rosh Hashanah ideal into personal supplication: the worshipper asks to strengthen the kingdom of holiness over the kingdom of wickedness, to receive holy wisdom and intellect, and to perceive through all things the hints by which God beckons him to draw near — embodying the fusion of awe, joy, and attentiveness that Breslov associates with the day, an orientation confirmed by Sefat Emet, Devarim, Rosh HaShanah 1:3, which teaches that on Rosh Hashanah one should not petition for worldly needs but solely for the establishment of divine sovereignty, receiving the new vitality God grants each creature entirely for His service.

The Sulam on the Zohar explains that the shofar-blasts of Rosh Hashanah arouse divine mercy, causing the forces of judgment and accusation to be confounded and rendered powerless — "the Satan is bewildered and cannot prosecute" — while Resisei Layla 35:2 adds that every Rosh Hashanah the shofar's sound re-enacts the awakening from spiritual sleep that preceded the giving of the Torah, so that the one who hears the shofar merits to be roused from his slumber throughout the entire year and to engage in Torah study (Sulam on Zohar, Vayera 384).

Tzitz Eliezer (Tzitz Eliezer 20:74) addresses the theological and liturgical rationale for why "Hayom harat olam" is recited before the shofar blasts and why Hallel is omitted on Rosh Hashanah: because the day is one of standing in judgment with the books of life and death open, inspiring fear, repentance, and supplication for forgiveness rather than joyful song, and only after this reckoning does one proceed to ask that the shofar blasts be received with mercy.

Responsa on this question

Tzitz Eliezer (Tzitz Eliezer 18:37)The Tzitz Eliezer addresses the spiritual service of Rosh Hashana in Breslov thought through an analysis of the liturgical phrase "This is the day of the beginning of Your work" and its connection to repentance, divine judgment, and the rectification of creation, explaining that through repentance undertaken with love (which characterizes the status of sons) or with fear (which characterizes the status of servants), Israel can transform the attribute of strict judgment into mercy and merit God's compassion on Rosh Hashana, the day when God annually renews the world's existence according to the measure of justice.

Psalms 89:16–18

Psalms 89:16-18

The verses praise the people who know the teruah and walk in the light of God's presence. They connect the shofar's call with joy, divine favor, and an ongoing relationship with God.

Happy is the people who know the joyful shout; O ETERNAL One, they walk in the light of Your presence. They rejoice in Your name all day long; they are exalted through Your righteousness. For You are their strength in which they glory; our horn is exalted through Your favor.

Psalms 47:6–9

Psalms 47:6-9

The psalm links the sound of the shofar with the kingship of God and the gathering of the nations. Its emphasis on proclaiming divine sovereignty is central to the Rosh Hashanah avodah.

God ascends midst acclamation; the ETERNAL, to the blasts of the horn. Sing, O sing to God; sing, O sing to our sovereign; for God is ruler over all the earth; sing a hymn. God reigns over the nations; God is seated on the holy throne.

Rosh Hashanah 16a–16b

Rosh Hashanah 16a:15

The Gemara presents Rosh Hashanah as the day of judgment and explains the centrality of the shofar, including the distinction between remembrance and judgment. These themes form a foundational backdrop for Breslov's emphasis on awakening, mercy, and renewal on Rosh Hashanah.

And for what reason did the Torah say: Pour water onto the altar in the Temple on the festival of Sukkot? The Holy One, Blessed be He, said: Pour water before Me on the festival of Sukkot so that the rains of the year, which begin to fall after Sukkot, will be blessed for you. And recite before Me on Rosh HaShana verses that mention Kingships, Remembrances, and Shofarot: Kingships so that you will crown Me as King over you; Remembrances so that your remembrance will rise before Me for good; and with what will the remembrance rise? It will rise with the shofar. Similarly, Rabbi Abbahu said: Why does one sound a blast with a shofar made from a ram’s horn on Rosh HaShana? The Holy One, Blessed be He, said: Sound a blast before Me with a shofar made from a ram’s horn, so that I will remember for you the binding of Isaac, son of Abraham, in whose stead a ram was sacrificed, and I will ascribe it to you as if you had bound yourselves before Me. Rabbi Yitzḥak said: Why does one sound [tokin] a blast on Rosh HaShana? The Gemara is astonished by the question: Why do we sound a blast? The Merciful One states in the verse: “Sound [tiku] a shofar” (Psalms 81:4). Rather, the question is: Why does one sound a staccato series of shofar blasts [terua] in addition to a long continuous shofar blast [tekia]? The Gemara is still surprised by the question: Sound a terua? The Merciful One states: “In the seventh month, in the first day of the month, shall be a solemn rest unto you, a memorial proclaimed with the blast of horns [terua]” (Leviticus 23:24). Rather, Rabbi Yitzḥak asked about the common practice in Jewish communities, which is not explicitly stated in the Torah: Why does one sound a long, continuous shofar blast [tekia] and then a staccato series of shofar blasts [terua] while the congregation is still sitting before the silent prayer,

Berakhot 12b

Berakhot 12b:2

During the ten days between Rosh HaShana and Yom Kippur, one modifies the standard Amida formulations to emphasize God's kingship and justice—concluding with "The holy King" and "The King of justice" rather than the year-round formulas—though Rabbi Elazar holds that using the standard formulas fulfills one's obligation, and the passage records a dispute among the Amoraim as to which practice is followed.

And, with regard to the formulation of the blessings, Rabba bar Ḥinnana Sava said in the name of Rav: Throughout the year a person prays and concludes the third blessing of the Amida prayer with: The holy God, and concludes the blessing regarding the restoration of justice to Israel with: King who loves righteousness and justice, with the exception of the ten days between Rosh HaShana and Yom Kippur, the Ten Days of Atonement. These days are comprised of Rosh HaShana, Yom Kippur, and the seven days in between, when one emphasizes God’s sovereignty, and so when he prays he concludes these blessings with: The holy King and: The King of justice, i.e., the King who reveals Himself through justice. In contrast, Rabbi Elazar said that one need not be exacting, and even if he said: The holy God during those ten days, he fulfilled his obligation, as it is stated: “And the Lord of Hosts is exalted through justice, and the holy God is sanctified through righteousness” (Isaiah 5:16). The Gemara explains: When is it appropriate to describe God with terms like: And the Lord of Hosts is exalted through justice? It is appropriate when God reveals Himself through justice, during the ten days between Rosh HaShana and Yom Kippur, yet the verse says: The holy God. This appellation sufficiently underscores God’s transcendence, and there is no need to change the standard formula. Here, too, opinions differ: Rav Yosef said in accordance with the opinion of Rabbi Elazar: There is no need to change the standard formula: The holy God and: King Who loves righteousness and justice. Rabba said in accordance with the opinion of Rav: The holy King and: The King of justice. The Gemara concludes: The halakha is in accordance with the opinion of Rabba.

Mishneh Torah, Repentance 3:4

Rambam famously describes the shofar's sound as an awakening call: sleepers should rouse themselves, examine their deeds, repent, and remember their Creator. This is a classic formulation of the inner work of Rosh Hashanah.

The passage states that based on the verse "Seek the Lord while He may be found," one should strive before Rosh Hashana through persistent prayer and repentance so as to enter Rosh Hashana with a pure heart, and that this is why in some places there is a custom to rise at night and establish fixed prayer in the synagogue on Mondays and Thursdays during Elul, similar to the practice during the Ten Days of Repentance with supplications and words of self-affliction.

Sha'arei Teshuvah 3:2

Yonah Gerondi teaches that examining the sin itself aids in covering one's shame when requesting forgiveness, as illustrated by the verse "My God, I am ashamed and embarrassed to lift my face to You"; wrapping oneself in shame before God after trusting in His forgiveness, as stated "So that you will remember and be ashamed when I make atonement for you for all you have done"; and keeping the greatness of the kindness of atonement before one's eyes, as in "For Your steadfast love is before my eyes.

[Numbers 29:1] and for the haftarah, "There was a man from Ramatayim" [1 Samuel 1:1] until "He will bring triumph to His annointed one" [1 Samuel 2:10]. Rem"a: Some places have the custom of calling up the shofar blower for one of the five aliyot to the Torah (Kol Bo).

Shulchan Arukh, Orach Chayim 582:1

Joseph Karo presents the prayer order for the Ten Days of Repentance and Rosh HaShana, including nine sections that specify when to say "The Holy King" and "The King of Judgment," rules for correcting errors or uncertainty about which formula was said (requiring return to the beginning or to Birchas Hasheveinu depending on the point of error), and the instruction to say "The Holy King" in the Birchas Mein Sheva at Maariv on the Shabbat between Rosh HaShana and Yom Kippur.

The Order of Prayers for the Ten Days of Repentance and Rosh HaShana. And in it is 9 paragraphs. In the Ten Days of Repentance say The Holy King and The King of Judgment. If one made a mistake or even if one is uncertain, (the rule is as follows:) If it is with "HaMelech HaKadosh" he should go back to the beginning. If it is HaMelech HaMishpat if prior to uprooting his feet, he should go back to the Birchas Hasheveinu and say from there and on according to the order. If he did not remember until he uprooted his feet (see before the end of Siman 117) he should got back to the beginning (i.e. repeat). [Also see Siman 118.] If one said The Holy God and within a moment he remembered and says The Holy King, he does not need to go return (the beginning). The same rule applies with The Holy Judge. In the Shabbos between (R'H and Yom Kippur), at Maariv say in the Birchas Mein Sheva The Holy King. Rema: So to if Rosh HaShana was on Shabbos but the conclusion is Shabbos alone. And the same is if Yom Kippur was on Shabbos [Maharil and Minhagim]

Machshavot Charutz 7:18

Reb Tzadok teaches that renewal in each soul begins with rectifying the particular deficiencies in that soul: Nissan is the time of our redemption and liberation from all kinds of evil (when the Holy One arouses us, hence the name Nissan from the word nes, miracle), while Tishrei is the season of repentance during the ten days of repentance, when the Jewish people return to God through their own effort and striving—the people say "return us to You and we shall return," while God says "return to Me and I shall return to you"—and our victory is assured, as the Talmud states, that in Nissan we are destined to be redeemed.

Shelah cites the sage Cordovero as writing in his commentary on the additional prayer for Rosh Hashanah that a person must serve God with two hearts—through the good inclination and through the evil inclination—meaning that through this balance, the two inclinations become equal in action, and one who performs a commandment as a burden does not serve while under the dominion of the evil inclination, as indicated by the verse "because you did not serve.

Resisei Layla 35:2

Reb Tzadok teaches that on Rosh Hashana the yetzer hara is recreated—a force of spiritual slumber and imagination from which the Satan operates—and the shofar's sound awakens one from this sleep, just as it aroused the people to receive Torah before Sinai; thus hearing the shofar on Rosh Hashana enables a person to awaken throughout the entire year and engage in the labor of Torah study according to his level.

Likutei Moharan II:5

Likutei Moharan, Part II 5:14

This lesson discusses the need to seek and reveal the good within oneself and others, a major Breslov path for overcoming accusation and despair. It is especially relevant to the Rosh Hashanah avodah of approaching judgment through renewed hope and positive identification.

14. This is also conceptually related to Rosh HaShanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Shemini Atzeret: Rosh HaShanah is synonymous with the rectification of faith, as in “Your faith, too, in the assembly of the holy ones” (Psalms 89:6). For that is when all the holy communities gather. As a result, all the facets of faith are gathered together and collected, as in “Your faith, too, in the assembly of the holy ones,” and this brings to the rectification of the intellects. This is the meaning of Rosh HaShanah—specifically rosh (head), referring to the intellects that are made and rectified. This relates to the five senses of the brain, all of which correspond to Rosh HaShanah. The brain has five senses: sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch. They all stem from the brain, from which nerves extend to each of these senses. All these senses are also related to Rosh HaShanah, which corresponds to the head and intellects.

Shem MiShmuel, Rosh Hashanah 5671

Shem MiShmuel, Erev Rosh Hashanah 2:2

Shem Mishmuel explains that before Adam's creation, all existence was sustained by divine compassion alone, but after Adam was created and placed in the Garden to work and keep it—work corresponding to performing positive commandments (which draw divine flow) and keeping corresponding to negative commandments (which repel external forces)—each year the thirteen attributes of mercy reopen during the period from the twenty-fifth of Elul through Rosh Hashana, and the seated shofar blasts specifically awaken the living spirit from within, just as God's breath animated Adam, so that through these blasts the person becomes a "speaking spirit" capable of drawing divine flow and repelling what should be repelled.

Sefat Emet, Deuteronomy, Rosh HaShanah 24:2

The Sfas Emes explains that sounding the shofar serves to grasp the voice of Torah, which is the innermost reality of all creation and derives from the primordial wisdom through which God created; this voice of the shofar (related to wisdom, not labor) is the root and source of life itself—connected to "life and death are in the hand of the tongue"—and represents the "voice of Jacob," which is the raising of the hand of Moses, thus the shofar-blast alludes to looking upward to the root and subjugating the heart to the Father in heaven, thereby achieving life and redemption of the soul from enslavement of the body, which is the essential battle against Amalek and the freedom (yovel) that the shofar-blast symbolizes.

Sichot HaRan 89-91

Sichot HaRan 89-91

Nachman teaches that the tikkun consists of learning to practice and fulfill the thirteen attributes of mercy and compassion, increasing acts of kindness and embodying all thirteen attributes, because by fulfilling these thirteen lower attributes of mercy one awakens the thirteen supernal attributes of mercy above, through which the destructive forces created by transgressions are subdued and pass away in the manner of "God the King sits on a throne of mercy...and forgives the iniquities of His people, removing them one by one.

Likutei Moharan, Part II 1:14

When a person sits to judge another in conversation, this resembles Rosh Hashana—a day of judgment—and one must examine oneself carefully whether one is fit to judge, since judgment belongs to God alone; yet God showed compassion by establishing Rosh Hashana as the day of judgment at the head of the month, for as it were He Himself seeks atonement at that time, so that we need not be ashamed to request atonement on the day of judgment since God Himself is asking for it then.

Likutei Moharan 6:4

Likutei Moharan 6:4

One who wishes to walk the path of teshuvah must be proficient in halakha and possess two kinds of proficiency: proficiency in going forward (ratzoa) and proficiency in returning (shuv), as the Zohar states; Nachman illustrates this through Tehillim 139:8—ascending to heaven represents going forward, and descending to Sheol represents returning.

Kedushat Levi, Deuteronomy, For Rosh HaShanah

Kedushat Levi, Deuteronomy, For Rosh HaShanah

The passage explains that on Rosh Hashana in Tishrei, when intellect attaches itself to its root, this resembles the state of pregnancy (herayon) experienced by a teacher whose student's intellect cleaves to the teacher's intellect so they learn together—and similarly, when the worlds attach themselves to their source above, this constitutes a state of pregnancy, which is why the prayer on Rosh Hashana states "today is the conception of the world" (hayom harat olam).

In his Rosh Hashanah teachings, the Sefat Emet emphasizes malchut Shamayim and the proclamation of God's kingship, themes that strongly overlap with the inner meaning of Shema. The focus is on coronation, awe, and renewing acceptance of divine rule.

Maamarim Melukatim

The passage discusses how the mizmor "Shir HaMaalot MiMaamkim" (recited throughout the Ten Days of Repentance beginning on Rosh Hashana) conveys two depths of meaning according to Zohar interpretations: Rabbi Yitzchak interprets "from depths" as referring to the depths of a person's own soul, while Rabbi Abba interprets it as referring to hidden supernal depths, and the passage reconciles these views by explaining that teshuvah work enables one to ascend through ever-deeper levels of profundity until reaching a depth transcending all gradations, from which one draws down divine connection.

Tzitz Eliezer 20:74

On Rosh Hashanah, the passage describes the theological and liturgical reason why Jews recite "Hayom harat olam" (Today is the world's birthday) before the shofar blasts and do not recite Hallel as one does at other celebrations of a king's coronation: because the day involves standing in judgment with the books of life and death open, inspiring fear, repentance, and supplication for forgiveness rather than joy and song, and only after acknowledging this serious spiritual reckoning does one proceed to request that the shofar blasts be accepted with mercy.

Tzitz Eliezer 18:37

The passage presents a Rosh Hashana homily from 1989 that interprets the liturgical phrase "This day is the beginning of Your works" alongside "For it is a statute for Israel, a judgment for the God of Jacob," explaining that all creation's continuation depends on Israel's observance of Torah, and distinguishing between repentance from love (characterized as "as sons," requiring no additional atonement) and repentance from fear (characterized as "as servants," still requiring Yom Kippur atonement), with the shofar's function being to elevate our remembrance before God through the merit of the binding of Isaac, ultimately calling listeners to perform repentance in the particular place and measure befitting Rosh Hashana.

Avnei Yashfeh 8:107

The passage addresses whether it is permissible to make private personal requests (such as for livelihood or healing) on Rosh Hashanah, noting that the author has seen a ruling permitting this, though the Vilna Gaon and Sha'arei Teshuva indicate that personal supplications should generally be avoided on festive days.

On this pageThe author addresses whether it is permissible to make private personal requests (such as for sustenance or healing) on Yom Tov and Rosh Hashanah. Citing the Vilna Gaon (from Ma'aseh Rav) and the Sha'arei Teshuva, he indicates that personal supplications and private requests should generally be avoided on these festive days. The passage discusses the permissibility of reciting "Ribono Shel Olam" and other personal supplications on Shabbat and Yom Tov, specifically during Birkat Kohanim and the opening of the Ark (פתיחת הארון). The author analyzes different halachic rulings, such as the Mishnah Berurah, Magen Avraham, and Mateh Ephraim, to determine if these prayers violate the restriction against making personal requests on holy days.

The passage describes four configurations of divine countenance (panim and achor) corresponding to stages of spiritual development: when external forces reject divine illumination through materialism (achor b'panim); when suffering and trials refine the soul and reveal its goodness (panim b'achor); when the soul is purified and worthy to receive full divine light (panim b'panim); and these same four configurations recur in the connection of soul and body through childhood, adolescence, repentance, and old age, each stage involving the soul's attempt to illuminate the body through intellect and overcoming the impulse to sin.

Sulam on Zohar, Vayera 384

Sulam on Zohar, Vayera 384

Sulam explains that on Rosh Hashana when the shofar is sounded, it awakens divine compassion and diminishes the severity of the left side (din), which causes the moon (representing malkhut) to become hidden; this diminishment weakens the power of the evil serpent to harm the world, confuses the Satan so he can no longer accuse, and thus on Rosh Hashana one must confound the Satan in a manner similar to one who is awakened from sleep and knows nothing.

Kitzur Shulchan Arukh Yalkut Yosef, Orach Chaim 582:4

Kitzur Shulchan Arukh Yalkut Yosef, Orach Chaim 582:4

Rav Yitzchak Yosef states that on Rosh Hashana one prays the evening service with intention, humility, and supplication, based on the teaching that "the year's root is established at its beginning and grows rich at its end"—meaning that the Jewish people position themselves as "needy" (reshim) at the start of the year to make supplication and prayer, which is why the acrostic piyyutim recited on Rosh Hashana spell out "Yadi Reshim" (my hands are needy).

Spiritual Awakening Through the Shofar

Rosh Hashanah

These sources explore the multiple dimensions of the shofar's sound on Rosh Hashanah: as a call to repentance and self-examination, a proclamation of divine kingship, and a remembrance that connects the listener to God and to the binding of Isaac. The shofar functions both as a ritual obligation and as a spiritual wake-up call inviting moral awareness.

Silence as the Highest Form of Divine Praise

These sources explore the spiritual paradox that silence can express more profound reverence toward God than articulated speech. Drawing from Biblical, Talmudic, and philosophical traditions, they argue that words inherently limit and diminish the infinite divine reality, making wordless contemplation and meditation a more authentic form of worship.
