What the sources say

The rabbinic obligation to wash hands before eating bread is rooted in the rabbinic enactment described by the Arukh HaShulchan (Orach Chaim 158:1), who explains that Chazal decreed netilat yadayim for ordinary food as a safeguard for terumah — so that people would not grow careless about washing before touching consecrated food — and the Rambam (Hilkhot Berakhot 6:1) codifies this as an obligation applying even when one's hands are not visibly soiled and one is unaware of any impurity.

The baseline shiur of water for netilat yadayim is a revi'it, as established across the codifiers: the Rambam (Hilkhot Berakhot 6:1–17) rules that a revi'it suffices for both hands together, the Mishnah Berurah (159:2) clarifies that this revi'it is revi'it ha-log, equaling one-and-a-half egg-volumes, and Peninei Halakhah (Berakhot 2:7) gives the modern measure as approximately 75 ml; the Shulchan Arukh HaRav (Orach Chayim 160) adds that the revi'it must be present in the vessel at the outset, though one need not pour the entire revi'it at once if washing in two pourings.

The Shulchan Arukh (Orach Chayim 160:13) rules, with important nuance, that when two people wash from the same revi'it — even one after the other — both are clean, provided the flow does not stop, because the water reaching the second person's hands comes from the remnants of purification; the Tur (Orach Chayim 160) and the Beit Yosef (Orach Chayim 160) trace this rule to the Talmudic principle that water coming as shiurei taharah, the residue of a valid revi'it, retains its purifying status.

Regarding valid vessels, the Shulchan Arukh (Orach Chayim 159:1) and the Tur (Orach Chayim 159) rule that all vessels are valid — including stone, earthenware, and dung-vessels that do not receive tumah — provided the vessel holds a revi'it and has not been perforated to the degree of mekabel mashke (admitting liquid); the Shulchan Arukh HaRav (Orach Chayim 159) codifies the same rule, noting that even vessels not regarded as vessels for tumah-purposes remain valid for netilat yadayim, and that a vessel incapable of holding a revi'it is invalid even if one intends to refill it multiple times.

The Beit Yosef (Orach Chayim 159) and the Mishnah Berurah (160:66–67) further specify the hole-invalidation rule: a perforation of the size of mekabel mashke nullifies the vessel's status entirely, so that even if the portion below the hole still holds a revi'it one may not pour through the mouth above; and Shut HaRav HaRashi (15:1) states in practical terms that one washes from a vessel holding more than a revi'it (he gives 86 grams), and that if a vessel lacked the full revi'it at the outset no subsequent addition of water corrects it — the hands remain impure until dried and the process is restarted.

On the subject of chatzitza, the fundamental principle shared by the Shulchan Arukh (Orach Chayim 161), the Tur (Orach Chayim 161), the Beit Yosef (Orach Chayim 161), and the Shulchan Arukh HaRav (Orach Chayim 161) is that whatever interposes in immersion interposes in netilat yadayim, since the Sages modeled their enactment on Torah-level immersion — so dough under a nail (even opposite the flesh), dirt under a nail that extends beyond the flesh, a bandage on the skin, and potter's clay are all listed as invalidating interpositions.

The Mishnah Berurah (161) and Peninei Halakhah (Berakhot 2:10) articulate the operative rule governing whether a minority-chatzitza invalidates: a substance covering the majority of the hand invalidates even if people do not normally object to it, while a substance covering only a minority of the hand invalidates only when both the individual and most people habitually object to it and remove it — paint on the hand being a typical example; the Shulchan Arukh HaRav (Orach Chayim 161) explains that dirt beneath the protruding part of a nail invalidates because most people are fastidious about it on account of its unpleasantness, and therefore it is not subordinated to the hand even for one who is personally indifferent.

The Gemara in Sotah 4b underscores the severity of the obligation, recording Rabbi Elazar's statement that one who treats netilat yadayim with contempt is uprooted from the world, and prescribing that after the first waters one raise the hands upward so that dirty water does not flow back from beyond the wrist and re-contaminate them — a point זהר, זהר חדש רות תקמב likewise echoes in requiring that one lift the hands when reciting the blessing.

Revavos Ephraim (6:69) is not available in text for Mekoros to read, but our research indicates that he addresses the question of whether the first washing waters must be raised as in Temple service, and the purifying role of the third pouring.

Tzitz Eliezer (8:7) is not available in text for Mekoros to read, but our research indicates that he addresses whether netilat yadayim before bread may be performed using water drawn from a fixed tap or faucet, and the validity of vessels in that context.

Modern poskim have addressed this question directly. Our research indicates that Mishneh Halachos (2:1) and Shevet HaLevi (1:205) are relevant.

Sotah 4b

Sotah 4b:6

Contains the teaching that neglecting netilat yadayim brings severe consequences, underscoring the rabbinic importance assigned to washing before eating.

The Gemara continues its discussion of washing hands. Rabbi Zerika says that Rabbi Elazar says: Anyone who treats the ritual of washing hands with contempt is uprooted from the world. Rav Ḥiyya bar Ashi says that Rav says: With regard to the first water, i.e., the water used when washing one’s hands before a meal, one must raise his hands upward after washing. With regard to the last water, i.e., the water used when washing one’s hands at the conclusion of the meal before reciting Grace after Meals, one must lower his hands downward. This distinction is also taught in a baraita (Tosefta, Yadayim 2:2): One who washes his hands before a meal must raise his hands upward after washing, lest the water advance past the joint onto the part of the hands that he was not required to wash, becoming impure, and then return to the area he had washed, rendering his hands ritually impure. Rabbi Abbahu says: Anyone who eats bread without wiping his hands dry after washing them causes the bread to become repulsive and is considered as if he were eating impure bread, since the verse refers to repulsive bread as impure bread, as it is stated: “And the Lord said: Even thus shall the children of Israel eat their bread unclean among the nations where I will drive them” (Ezekiel 4:13). Eating bread with wet hands causes the bread to become repulsive. The verse deems eating in an uncouth manner, as did the gentiles among whom the Jewish people were exiled, as akin to eating ritually impure bread.

Chullin 106a:6

Discusses the rabbinic requirement of washing hands before eating bread and the associated form of pouring water over the hands.

A disagreement was stated with regard to water heated by fire: Ḥizkiyya says that one may not wash his hands with such water, and Rabbi Yoḥanan says that one may wash his hands with it. Rabbi Yoḥanan said: I asked Rabban Gamliel, son of Rabbi Yehuda HaNasi, about this halakha, and he was one who would eat only in a state of ritual purity and was therefore careful about washing his hands; and he said to me that all the great men of the Galilee would do so, i.e., wash their hands in heated water. Likewise, with regard to the hot springs of Tiberias, Ḥizkiyya says that one may not wash his hands with water from them before eating, but if there are forty se’a, the requisite size of a ritual bath, then one may immerse the hands directly in them, and this is effective for the ritual of washing the hands before a meal. And Rabbi Yoḥanan says that an impure person may immerse his entire body in such water to become pure, but one may still not use it for the immersion of part of his body, such as his face, hands, and feet, as this immersion is not considered equivalent to washing the hands. The Gemara asks: Now that it has been said that one may immerse his entire body in the hot springs of Tiberias, is it not all the more so permitted for his face, hands, and feet? Rav Pappa said: When the water in the hot springs stands in place, everyone, both Ḥizkiyya and Rabbi Yoḥanan, agrees that it is permitted to immerse one’s hands in it. Likewise, everyone agrees that to take from these waters in a vessel and wash one’s hands from it is prohibited. They disagree when one draws the waters through a ditch. One Sage, Rabbi Yoḥanan, holds that we decree against the use of ditch water due to the concern that one might come to use water in a vessel, and one Sage, Ḥizkiyya, holds that we do not decree against it.

Pesachim 115a

Pesachim 115a:9

Discusses washing hands in the context of eating matzah and the broader requirement of ritual hand-washing associated with eating bread-like foods.

Rabbi Elazar said that Rav Oshaya said: Anything that is dipped in a liquid before it is eaten requires the ritual of washing of the hands. The obligation to wash one’s hands was instituted to preserve ritual purity and to prevent people from causing teruma food to contract ritual impurity. Hands are generally considered impure to the second degree of ritual impurity, and they confer impurity upon any liquid with which they come in contact. Liquids that become ritually impure are automatically impure to the first degree and will therefore transfer ritual impurity to any food that is dipped in them. Rav Pappa said: Learn from this halakha, which requires the washing of hands, that for this lettuce on Passover,

The passage describes five aspects of hand-washing before eating bread: that unwashed hands make food equivalent to impure bread; that one washes the right hand with the left and vice versa up to the knuckle joint as the sages decreed; that hands must be raised after washing at the time of blessing with both arms joined together; and that the blessing must be immediately preceded by the washing.

Anyone eating bread over which the blessing HaMotzi is recited must wash both hands before and after; this applies even to ordinary bread, even if the hands are not visibly soiled, and even if one is unaware of any impurity on them—one may not eat until both hands are washed, and similarly anything that requires immersion in liquids requires hand-washing beforehand.

To what point should one's hands be washed? To the wrist. How much water should be used? A [minimum of a] revi'it for each pair of hands. Anything that is considered an intervening substance [and thus invalidates] a ritual immersion is also considered an intervening substance with regard to washing hands. All liquids that may be included in the measure of a mikveh may be included in the measure of the revi'it [necessary for the washing of hands]. Whoever had to wash his hands and [instead] immersed them in the water of a mikveh need not do anything else. If he immersed them in a body of water that does not have the required measure of a mikveh, or in water that has been poured onto the ground, he has not accomplished anything. Water that is poured [by man] can purify hands only when it is poured over them. Everyone who washes his hands must show concern for four matters: the water itself - that it not be unacceptable for washing hands, its measure - that there be a revi'it for each pair of hands, the container - that one wash from a container, the individual pouring - that the water come from the power of a person who pours it.

Addresses the quality and quantity of water for netilat yadayim, including the minimum shiur and invalid water conditions.

The water needs to contain a revi'it. And these words are regarding one. But for 2 who came to wash at once, the latter doesn't need. And even with one after the other. But only providing that the flow shouldn't stop. How? There was a revi'it of water in a vessel and one stretched out his hands and one pours on his hands and a second one came and stretched out his hands under him, close to the hand of the first one, and the flow descends onto the hand of the first one and to the second one that is under it – the hands of both of them are clean. Even though the measurement of the revi'it was minimized when it reaches the hands of the second one, his hands are clean because it come from the left-overs of purity. And there are those who permit even when they wash one after the other; since at the time that the 1st one began to wash from it, it contained a revi'it, it works also for this second one, because it came from the left-overs of purity. And in this way they wash from a half-log for 3 and for 4; and from a log for several people, so long as the water is enough for each one to pour on his hand three times; (and the same law is) that 4 and 5 can place their hands one beside the other or on top of the other and to wash at once. And only providing that their hands should be loose in a way that the water should get to each one. There needs to be a revi'it gathered in one place; that if one washed from an eighth and then washed again from an eighth, his hands are unclean like they were. The revi'it that said is both for the hands of an adult and for the hands of a child. Two people washed: This one – his one hand; and this one – his one hand. And afterwards the second one returned and washed his second hand – these are like 3 people. Therefore: If the vessel contained a half-log, his hands are clean. And if not, his second hand is not clean; for more than two people do not wash with less than a half-log.

Which vessels can you wash your hands with and how to pour the water on your hands. 26 parts: Only wash your hands with a vessel. All vessels are kosher for this, even galalim vessels [vessels made from cow feces and dust ], stone vessels, and earthenware vessels. The vessel must be able to hold a reviis of liquid. If there is a hole/crack in the vessel [that is, if you put the vessel in liquid, the liquid will enter it through the crack and that crack is bigger than a crack that lets water out], then the vessel is no longer considered a vessel and you shouldn't use it to wash your hands. This is so even if the vessel could hold a reviis of liquid below the crack. The above applies when you pour from the mouth of the vessel above the hole/crack, because water above the crack is not considered to be in a vessel, so the water isn't pouring onto your hands from a vessel. However, if you pour from the crack, it is permitted since the vessel can hold a reviis under the crack. A vessel that holds a reviis when it is propped up (by something else) and if it is not propped up will pour out the water so that not even a reviis of water remains in it is not a vessel. Therefore, the body of a (rounded) single piece barrel that doesn't hold a reviis when it is not supported should not be used to wash with. If it is wide enough on the bottom that it does hold a reviis while unsupported, you can wash with it. Chemet and Kfisa, which are types of water skins that have a base, may be used for washing. But sacks and baskets that have been arranged to sit on without being supported and have been coated with tar until they are water-resistant may not be used to wash with, because they are not made to receive water. The same applies to the hats of the levedim (meaning a type of hard material). Even when they are so hard that they can hold water and do not leak, they are still not made to receive water. However, in a case of necessity, they can be used, because passers-by on regular roads commonly drink from them A utensil that was initially repaired in such a way that it cannot stand without support, and is only used with support, is considered a valid utensil. Therefore, a utensil that has a hole in its base and a narrow opening at the top, such that water does not come out when one places a finger on it, but flows out when the finger is removed, is permissible to use. Even if it does not hold anything, it is considered a utensil since it is fit for use in this regard. The essential use of a utensil is what determines its status. Rema: This applies even to a utensil with a spout at its base, since it was initially made to be used in this way [Tur and Beit Yosef].

Mishnah Berurah

Mishnah Berurah 158:20

Some early authorities held that the Sages did not require hand-washing for food whose taste is absorbed in liquid (since in their time people ate in a state of purity), and therefore one should not recite a blessing on the washing; the Magen Avraham reports that people customarily do not wash based on this view, yet many later authorities stringently ruled that washing is required by law even today, with the Gra particularly strict about this matter and requiring a blessing as well, so one should not eat without washing even though the common practice is not to bless, and all the laws of washing applicable to bread apply here, though for less than a kezayit there is no reason to be stringent.

Mishnah Berurah 181

The later authorities permit for the second washing (after the first meal course) water that is disqualified for the first washing—such as water in which work was performed, water whose appearance changed, or water from which animals drank—and for this washing neither a vessel nor the strength of a person is required as for the first washing, the hands are not invalidated by an interposing substance in such water, and pouring need occur only once.

Some say one need not be careful to avoid an interruption between netilas yadayim and the blessing over bread, while others say one should be careful, and it is preferable to be careful; if one delayed for the time it takes to walk twenty-two amot, it is considered an interruption.

Peninei Halakhah, Berakhot 2:7

Netilas yadayim before bread requires water from a vessel containing at least a revi'it halug (approximately 75 ml, the volume of an egg and a half), and using less than this amount does not fulfill the obligation; the water must be clear in its natural appearance, and if its appearance has changed it is invalid for netilas yadayim, therefore one may not wash hands with juice since it is water whose appearance has been altered.

Peninei Halakhah, Berakhot 2:10

A chatzitza (barrier) adhering to the hand—such as dirt or dye—invalidates netilas yadayim if it covers the majority of the hand; if it adheres only to a minority of the hand, invalidation depends on whether both the individual and most people are accustomed to being particular about removing that specific barrier, such as visible dye, in which case he must remove it before washing.

Peninei Halakhah, Berakhot 2:12

Peninei Halakhah, Berakhot 2:12

Some authorities carefully wipe the vessel's handles before netilas yadayim to prevent the water on the vessel from becoming ritually impure through contact with unwashed hands during the process of grasping the vessel and switching hands, but the prevailing position of most poskim is that wiping the vessel is unnecessary, since the concern about contact with an unwashed hand applies only to water actually on the hands during the netilah itself.

Maamar Mordechai Limot HaChol 2:21

Maamar Mordechai Limot HaChol 2:21

The passage discusses validity of water for netilas yadayim: water that is halachically unfit for eating (such as water whose appearance has changed) is disputed—some rule it invalid for netilas yadayim before the morning meal and the person should not recite a blessing, while others permit its use with the option of blessing without God's name and kingdom while intending the blessing mentally; regarding uncovered water, it is preferable that water used for hand-washing be covered overnight, but uncovered water is permitted for netilas yadayim in a place where snakes are not found, since the prohibition against uncovered water applies only to drinking.

Maamar Mordechai Limot HaChol 2:24

Maamar Mordechai Limot HaChol 2:24

One must pour water for morning netilas yadayim into a vessel rather than onto the ground (due to harmful spiritual forces in the water), and the vessel should ideally be repulsive or broken but not perforated; if water spills onto other vessels, one must rinse them.

Shut HaRav HaRashi 15:1

Shut HaRav HaRashi 15:1

Before eating bread, one immerses the hands from a vessel containing more than a quarter-log (86 grams), pouring water three times consecutively on each hand, with more water being praiseworthy; immersion for hands must be done only from a vessel, requiring at least a quarter-log of water gathered in one place (twenty-seven drams, equivalent to one and a half eggs), and if the vessel lacked a quarter-log and water was poured on the hands and then more water was brought to complete the amount, the hands remain impure with no remedy except to dry them first and then immerse them again from a vessel containing a quarter-log of water.

Revavos Ephraim 6:69

The Beit Yosef rules that regarding the first waters for handwashing before eating, one need not raise the hands high as was required in the Temple service, since we wash three times; however, a subsequent opinion in Olat Tamid suggests that third waters purify the first and second waters that remain on the hands, yet this creates an apparent difficulty, as all poskim agree that waters outside the Temple courtyard retain their impurity, raising the question of how third waters could purify hands if they themselves remain impure outside that boundary.

Tzitz Eliezer 8:7

Tzitz Eliezer 8:7

The passage discusses whether netilat yadayim (ritual handwashing) before bread may be performed using water from a fixed tap or faucet in a house, and addresses several related halakhic questions about the validity of vessels, whether a pipe interrupts the status of water from a reservoir, and whether wrapping hands in a cloth or conditional washing (on condition it serves all day) is preferable. The author argues that drawing water through a pipe connected to a main reservoir constitutes valid netilat yadayim from a vessel because the pipe functions as part of the vessel system when water is actively drawn, and that while there are differing opinions, the halacha permits this method; however, he concludes that those stringent in religious practice should preferably use a special vessel for netilat yadayim rather than relying on the faucet method, though in cases of need the faucet method may be permitted.
