Daily Manna and Trust in Divine Sustenance

Sources explore why God provided manna on a daily basis rather than in a single annual allotment, examining how this practice cultivated Israel's dependence on divine provision and their daily connection to God. Classical and medieval commentaries discuss the spiritual discipline and faith that the daily portion was designed to instill.

What the sources say

The Torah itself frames the daily portion as a divine test: Shemot 16:4-5 records that God commanded each person to gather only that day's share — "that I may thus test them" — explicitly tying the one-day supply to an ongoing trial of obedience and trust.

The Gemara in Yoma 76a explains through Rabbi Shimon ben Yochai's parable that the daily schedule was designed to cultivate continuous relationship: just as a king who provides his son's food daily draws that son close every morning, so too the daily manna ensured that Israel would turn their eyes toward Heaven each day rather than once a year.

Yalkut Shimoni on Torah 258:3 adds a parallel rationale in the name of Rabbi Elazar the son of Rabbi Shimon — that even though the manna's total quantity sufficed for thousands of years, it fell daily so that Israel would lift their eyes to their Father in Heaven every single day, and any surplus would simply dissolve in the sun's heat.

The Ramban (Ramban on Shemot 16:4) corrects Rashi's reading and argues that the trial was not merely about keeping specific manna-laws but about total dependence: Israel had no food and no alternative recourse in the wilderness, so receiving sustenance one day at a time — from a source their ancestors had never known — was itself the crucible of faith.

Mesillat Yesharim 21:7 draws out the broader principle: since no person can receive what belongs to another even by a hair's breadth, and all sustenance is fixed from Rosh Hashana, the proper response is to cast one's burden entirely upon God — the very disposition the daily manna was structured to cultivate.

Exodus 16:4-5

Exodus 16:4-5

God announces that manna will descend daily, with each day’s portion gathered anew, so that the people can be tested and learn to walk in dependence on Him rather than on stored provisions.

And GOD said to Moses, “I will rain down bread for you from the sky, and the people shall go out and gather each day that day’s portion—that I may thus test them, to see whether they will follow My instructions or not. But on the sixth day, when they apportion what they have brought in, it shall prove to be double the amount they gather each day.”

Exodus 16:16-20

Exodus 16:16-20

The Torah stresses that each person receives an omer and that attempts to save manna overnight lead to spoilage, underscoring the discipline of taking only what is needed for the day.

This is what GOD has commanded: Each household shall gather as much as it requires to eat—an omer to a person for as many of you as there are; each household shall fetch according to those in its tent.” And Moses said to them, “Let no one leave any of it over until morning.” But they paid no attention to Moses; some of them left of it until morning, and it became infested with maggots and stank. And Moses was angry with them.

Shemot Rabbah 25:9

Shemot Rabbah 25:9

God tells Israel that just as one is measured by the measure one uses, He gave them Torah to engage in daily (as stated in Mishlei 8:34), sustains their lives by providing bread from heaven day by day (as stated in Shemot 16:4), and moreover blesses them day by day.

Yoma 76a

Yoma 76a:2

The sugya on manna describes its miraculous qualities and connects it to Israel’s experience of divine nourishment in the wilderness, highlighting that sustenance came directly from God.

Furthermore, with regard to the manna: The students of Rabbi Shimon ben Yoḥai asked him: Why didn’t the manna fall for the Jewish people just once a year to take care of all their needs, instead of coming down every day? He said to them: I will give you a parable: To what does this matter compare? To a king of flesh and blood who has only one son. He granted him an allowance for food once a year and the son greeted his father only once a year, when it was time for him to receive his allowance. So he arose and granted him his food every day, and his son visited him every day. So too, in the case of the Jewish people, someone who had four or five children would be worried and say: Perhaps the manna will not fall tomorrow and we will all die of starvation. Consequently, everyone directed their hearts to their Father in heaven every day. The manna that fell each day was sufficient only for that day, so that all of the Jewish people would pray to God for food for the next day.

Yalkut Shimoni on Torah 258:3

Yalkut Shimoni on Torah 258:3

Rabbi Elazar son of Rabbi Shimon teaches that manna fell daily for two thousand years as written "a portion each day," though from Tehillim a thousand years equals one day to God; it fell daily rather than all at once because of the burden of carrying it, and alternatively so that Israel would lift their eyes to their Father in heaven each day.

THAT I MAY TRY THEM, WHETHER THEY WILL WALK IN MY LAW OR NOT. “I.e., whether they will observe the commandments associated with it, such as [the laws] that they should not leave [a remainder] of it until the morning and that they should not go out on the Sabbath to collect it.” Thus the language of Rashi. But this is not correct. Rather, the intent [of the trial mentioned here] is as He said, Who fed thee in the wilderness with manna, which thy fathers knew not; that He might afflict thee, and that He might try thee, to do thee good at thy latter end. [The manna itself] was a trial to them, since they had no food in the wilderness and were without recourse to any sustenance except the manna, which they knew not from before and had never heard of from their fathers. Each day’s quantity came down on its day, and they were eagerly desirous for it. Yet with all this, they hearkened to walk after G-d to a place of no food. And so indeed He said to them again, And thou shalt remember all the way in which the Eternal thy G-d hath led thee these forty years in the wilderness, that He might afflict thee, to try thee, to know what was in thy heart, whether thou wouldest keep His commandments, or no. He could have led them by way of the cities that were round about them. Instead, He led them through the wilderness wherein were serpents, fiery serpents, and scorpions, and each day’s quantity of food would come to them only from heaven in order to try them and to do them good at the end so that they would believe in Him forever. I have already explained the matter of “trial” in the commentary on the verse, And G-d tried Abraham. The Rabbi [Moshe ben Maimon] has written in the Moreh Nebuchim [on the verse before us, That I may try them, whether they will walk in My law or not, that it means] that “everyone capable of knowledge should know and determine whether there is usefulness in the service of G-d, and whether there is adequate satisfaction in it or not.” But if so, it would have been proper for Him to say, “that He may try them to know!” Now Scripture mentions here only the matter of manna, which was “the bread” which He caused to rain upon them, [and it does not refer to the flesh which He gave them]. However, from that which Moses told them, This shall be, when the Eternal shall give you in the evening flesh to eat, and in the morning bread to the full, we know that everything was told to him. It is only that when a subject is mentioned twice, Scripture shortens it in the report of the command or the narrative, as I have mentioned to you many times. At times, it omits one — [the command or the narrative] — altogether, such a case being the verse written in this section: This is the thing which the Eternal hath commanded: Let an omerful of it [the manna] be kept throughout your generations, and the command [of G-d to Moses] is not recorded at all. This is also the case in many places. But in the opinion of those scholars who say that lechem here means “all food,” it is possible that by saying, Behold, I will cause to rain ‘lechem,’ the meaning refers to both the manna and to the quail, i.e., that He would fulfill their request for bread and flesh. Moses explained that the flesh would be [available] to eat in the evening, and the bread would be [available] in the morning to the full, as is the customary way.

Ramban on Exodus 16:20

Ramban notes that storing manna against God’s command produced corruption, showing that the miracle was designed to teach obedience and reliance on each day’s allotment.

Sforno on Exodus 16:4

Sforno says the daily manna trained Israel in moderation and faith, so they would not hoard but would learn to depend on God every day for their needs.

למען אנסנו הילך בתורתי, if when receiving their food without effort they will take care to keep My commandments, seeing they will then not have any excuses not to. This idea has been formulated in the classic statement by our sages in the Mechilta, section ויסע chapter 2 “the Torah, as an instrument of profound study, has been given only to the generation who ate the manna.” [no other generation had so little to distract it from devoting time to Torah study. Ed.]

Or HaChaim on Exodus 17:3

Q — At Refidim there was genuinely no water and the people were in real danger of dying of thirst — why would God bring them to such a desperate trial, the kind that 'breeds heresy'? And why does Moshe cry out against the people rather than pray for water as he did elsewhere?

A — Or HaChaim explains that God deliberately tested them to train them to lift their eyes in prayer — 'this is a great principle of faith and perfection of the soul.' For the same reason God gave the manna daily rather than monthly: the bond between Israel and their Father in Heaven must be constant and daily. God withheld the miracle until they would beseech their Creator, so that He could answer their cry.

Mesillat Yesharim 21

Mesillat Yesharim 21:7

The Ramchal presents trust in God as living without anxiety over tomorrow, using dependence on providence as a framework for spiritual steadiness and detachment from hoarding.

However, that which can protect a person and save him from these detriments is trust in G-d. Namely, that a person casts his burden entirely upon G-d, knowing that it is certainly impossible for a man to lack what was designated for him, as our sages taught: "all of a person's sustenance [for the year] is fixed for him from Rosh Hashana [to Yom Kippur]" (Beitzah 16a). Likewise, they said: "no man can touch what was prepared for his fellow even to the extent of a hair's breadth" (Yomah 38b). Only that it is not the efforts (hishtadlut) that help. Rather, the efforts are necessary, but once one has put in some effort, he has already discharged his obligation and there is place for the blessing of Heaven to rest upon him, and he need not consume his days in exertion and labor. This is what king David said: "For not from the east or from the west, nor from... but it is G-d who executes judgment, [putting down one and lifting up another]" (Tehilim 75:7-8), and king Shlomo said: "Do not weary yourself to grow rich; cease applying your understanding" (Mishlei 23:4). Rather, the true path is that of the "early Pious ones", who made their Torah primary and their work secondary, and succeeded in both (Berachot 35b). For once a man does a little work, from then on, he need only trust in his Master, and not be distressed by any worldly matters. Then his mind will be free and his heart ready for true Chasidut and perfect divine service.

Sefat Emet, Beshalach

Sefat Emet, Exodus, Beshalach:6

The Sefat Emet commonly reads the manna as a training in emunah, where receiving only for today cultivates a living relationship with God that renews itself every morning.
