HaKtav VeHaKabalah, Leviticus 23:15
Q — 'וספרתם לכם' — what work does the dative 'לכם' actually do? It seems like grammatical filler, since Hashem isn't telling someone else to count.
A — HaKtav VeHaKabbalah insists this is no filler — 'לכם' is the heart of the mitzvah. Sefirat haOmer is not about *quantitative* tracking ('how many days have passed?') but *qualitative* self-examination ('how am I conducting myself in this period?'). The pattern 'לך' / 'לכם' appears throughout Tanakh meaning *for your benefit* — Rashi on 'לך לך': 'להנאתך ולטובתך.' Same here: count *for yourselves*, for the refinement of your souls. He extends the chiddush to the verb 'תספור' itself, comparing 'כל צעדי תספור' (Iyov 14:16) and 'וספר לו שבעת ימים' (zav) — in all these cases, ספירה means careful *attention* and *supervision* of the days' content, not mere enumeration. The whole structure of sefirat haOmer is reframed: 49 days of intentional spiritual recalibration en route to mattan Torah.
