The Yissachar-Zevulun Partnership in Halacha

Sources explore the biblical and halakhic foundations of a partnership in which one person supports a Torah student financially in exchange for sharing in the spiritual reward of the learning. Contemporary authorities discuss the conditions under which such an arrangement is valid, including whether the agreement must be made before or after the student begins studying.

What the sources say

The Yissachar-Zevulun model has its roots in the Torah itself: Devarim 33:18–19 blesses Zevulun upon his journeys and Issachar in his tents, and the Midrash Shmuel (Avot 5:13) explains directly that because Zevulun went out to trade and sustained Issachar who learned in the study hall, Scripture credited Zevulun as though he himself sat in the beit midrash — for supporting Torah scholars is counted as engaging in Torah.

The core legal requirement for the partnership is that it must be arranged in advance: the Arukh HaShulchan (Yoreh De'ah 246:8) rules, quoting the Shulchan Arukh, that one may agree with a fellow that he will engage in Torah and the other will provide his livelihood and they will divide the reward — but if the learning has already taken place, one cannot sell another his share of the reward, since reward in the World to Come is not subject to sale or transfer; only when both parties enter the arrangement from the outset have both performed the mitzvah together, as with Issachar and Zevulun.

The Shenei Luchot HaBerit (Aseret HaDibrot, Shevuot, Ner Mitzva 114) reinforces this requirement, citing Rabbeinu Yeruḥam: before engaging in Torah one may stipulate that his fellow conduct commerce while he takes a share of the learning — but after the fact, no transfer of reward is possible, and moreover the learner himself may forfeit his share, as the commentators explain from the case of Hillel and Shavna.

Beyond the formal partnership, the Gemara in Sotah 21a teaches that those who enable others to learn Torah — by supporting them or waiting for them — genuinely share in the reward, and Berakhot 34b adds that all the prophets prophesied only for those who conduct business on behalf of Torah scholars and benefit them from their wealth, while Torah scholars themselves enjoy a reward that no eye has seen.

Genesis 49:13-15

Genesis 49:13-15

Jacob’s blessings portray Zebulun as dwelling by the sea and engaging in commerce, while Issachar is depicted as bearing the burden of Torah-related labor. These verses are the biblical foundation for the later Issachar–Zebulun model, though they do not themselves formulate a contractual reward-sharing arrangement.

Zebulun shall dwell by the seashore; He shall be a haven for ships, And his flank shall rest on Sidon. Issachar is a strong-boned donkey, Crouching among the sheepfolds.

Deuteronomy 33:18-19

Moses blesses Zebulun and Issachar together, associating Zebulun with going out and commerce and Issachar with remaining in tents. The pairing became a central scriptural basis for the idea that material support and Torah study can form complementary roles.

And of Zebulun he said: Rejoice, O Zebulun, on your journeys, And Issachar, in your tents.

Sotah 21a

Sotah 21a:12

The Talmud discusses the merit of Torah study and the support of Torah scholars, including the partnership of “Yissachar and Zevulun.” It is a primary Chazal source for the possibility that one who materially enables another’s Torah may share in the merit, while also distinguishing support from the intrinsic spiritual value of study itself.

Ravina said: Actually, the merit that delays the punishment of the sota is the merit of Torah study, and with regard to that which you say, i.e., that she is not commanded to do so and performs a mitzva, the mishna is not referring to the merit of her own Torah study. Granted, she is not commanded to study Torah herself; however, in reward for causing their sons to read the Written Torah and to learn the Mishna, and for waiting for their husbands until they come home from the study hall, don’t they share the reward with their sons and husbands? Therefore, if the sota enabled her sons and husband to study Torah, the merit of their Torah study can protect her and delay her punishment. The Gemara interprets the continuation of the verse cited by the baraita with regard to Torah study: What is the meaning of: “Many waters cannot extinguish the love…if a man would give all the fortune of his house for love, he would utterly be condemned” (Song of Songs 8:7)? The Torah is compared to love several times in the Song of Songs. Therefore, the verse indicates that one cannot acquire a share in the reward for Torah study with money. Ulla says: The verse is not speaking of individuals like Shimon, brother of Azarya, whose brother Azarya supported him and enabled him to study Torah. And it is not speaking of individuals like Rabbi Yoḥanan of the house of the Nasi, whom the Nasi supported so that he could study Torah.

Berakhot 34b

Berakhot 34b:18

The Talmud records the statement that all prophets prophesied for those who support Torah scholars, while the ultimate future is beyond ordinary prophetic vision. The passage is frequently cited to establish the exceptional religious value of sustaining Torah learning, though it is not itself a detailed Yissachar–Zevulun contract.

Ketubot 49a

Ketubot 49a:8

A baraita presents three opinions on whether there is a mitzva to sustain children engaged in Torah study: Rabbi Meir holds it is a mitzva to sustain daughters and by extension sons who study Torah; Rabbi Yehuda reverses the order, obligating support for sons and by extension daughters to spare them begging; and Rabbi Yochanan ben Beroka distinguishes that daughters must be sustained only after their father's death, whereas during his lifetime neither sons nor daughters are sustained.

As it is taught in a baraita, it is a mitzva to sustain daughters, and the same applies by an a fortiori inference to sons, who are engaged in the study of Torah. This is the statement of Rabbi Meir. Rabbi Yehuda says: It is a mitzva to sustain sons, and the same applies by an a fortiori inference with regard to daughters, due to the dishonor they will suffer if they are forced to go around begging. Rabbi Yoḥanan ben Beroka says: It is an obligation to sustain the daughters after their father’s death; however, during their father’s lifetime both these and those, sons and daughters alike, are not sustained.

Sefer Chasidim 951

The passage presents multiple interpretations of "better is the end of a matter than its beginning" (Ecclesiastes 7:8): if someone studies Torah during harvest season when he could earn income and will lack food, it is better that he first work and then study Torah; however, if he has abundant resources managed by trustees for profit and can support himself, it is better he engage in Torah study. In another case, a man who refused communal charity, undertook trading between cities, was captured, required ransom, and the sage told him that the ransom cost exceeded years of support he could have received—had he accepted charity from the start, this capture would not have occurred, illustrating how a proper beginning leads to a proper end.

Sefer Chasidim 1039

A person with means should give money to righteous individuals engaged in Torah study rather than building synagogues or study halls, and should support those who learn to fulfill the commandments rather than those who study merely to display intellectual sharpness; moreover, one is obligated to support righteous and poor relatives before supporting others of lesser quality, just as one must pay those to whom one owes a debt.

Mishneh Torah, Gifts to the Poor 10:7-14

Mishneh Torah, Gifts to the Poor 10:7-14

Rambam presents graded forms of charity, including strengthening another person before poverty becomes entrenched and enabling self-sufficiency. These principles are relevant to structuring ongoing support for a kollel student, although they do not directly determine the metaphysical allocation of Torah reward.

There are eight levels in charity, each level surpassing the other. The highest level beyond which there is none is a person who supports a Jew who has fallen into poverty [by] giving him a present or a loan, entering into partnership with him, or finding him work so that his hand will be fortified so that he will not have to ask others [for alms]. Concerning this [Leviticus 25:35] states: "You shall support him, the stranger, the resident, and he shall live among you." Implied is that you should support him before he falls and becomes needy.

Sefer HaChinukh 434

Sefer HaChinukh 434:1

In discussing the commandment of supporting the Levite, the Sefer HaChinukh explains the social and spiritual necessity of sustaining those devoted to divine service and instruction. It provides an ethical framework for supporting Torah personnel, though it is not a direct treatment of Yissachar–Zevulun.

To cling to Torah sages: That we were commanded to associate [with] and cling to Torah sages, so that we learn its glorious commandments from them, and they teach us the true opinions — which are received through them — about it. And about this is it stated (Deuteronomy 10:20), “to Him shall you cling.” And the command is repeated in another place, as it is stated (Deuteronomy 11:22), “and to cling to Him.” And they, may their memory be blessed, said (Ketuvot 111b), “And is it possible for a person to cling to the Divine Presence — and behold it is written (Deuteronomy 4:24), ‘For the Lord, your God, is a consuming fire’? Rather, one who clings to the Torah scholars and their students is as if he clings to Him, blessed be He.” And from this, our Rabbis, may their memory be blessed, learned that anyone who marries the daughter of a Torah scholar, or marries his daughter to a Torah scholar or who gives benefit from his property to a Torah scholar is as if he clings to the Divine presence. And they also expounded in Sifrei Devarim 49, “‘And to cling to Him’ — study the words of aggadah (the homiletical teachings), as through this, you will recognize the One Who spoke and the world came into being.”

Arukh HaShulchan develops the practical rules concerning Torah study, scholars, and the community’s responsibility to sustain learning. It is a useful contemporary-style synthesis for assessing regular kollel support alongside the more specialized responsa.

Shenei Luchot HaBerit, Aseret HaDibrot, Shevuot, Ner Mitzva:114

A person may acquire from another a share in the reward of Torah study and work, or sell to him before the work is done; one engaged in Torah may stipulate beforehand that another will engage in commerce and take a portion of his learning like Yissachar and Zevulun, but once he has engaged in it, giving him money for that reason is worthless, as the verse states "if a man gives all the wealth of his house" (Shir HaShirim 8:7); this is the matter of Hillel and Shavna mentioned in Sotah, and it is reasonable that one engaged in work has lost his portion since he already ceased learning.

Midrash Shmuel on Avot 5:13

Midrash Shmuel on Avot 5:13

A person who supports Torah students financially is considered by Scripture as if he himself is studying in the study hall, as exemplified by Zevulun and Yissachar—Zevulun went out to commerce to sustain Yissachar who studied in the study hall, and therefore Scripture said "Rejoice Zevulun in your going out, and Yissachar in your tents," meaning that even Yissachar's tents are attributed to Zevulun since Zevulun sustains him, so the supporter shares in the merit of the learning.

The passage cites Talmudic sources showing that yeshiva heads were permitted to receive financial support and sustenance from their students and community in order to be honored and have their teachings heeded, including examples of Rabbi Abahu, Rabbi Yochanan, and Rabbi Akiva, arguing that contemporary practice supports allowing those who dedicate themselves to Torah study to be sustained by others' contributions.

Nefesh HaChayim, Gate IV 31

Nefesh HaChayim, Gate IV 31:1

Involvement with Torah study atones for a person's sins, as demonstrated through multiple rabbinic sources: the Talmud states that one engaged in Torah requires no sacrificial offerings; midrashic sources teach that God accepts Torah study in place of physical sacrifices and forgives sins through it; and the Zohar teaches that one who engages in Torah is considered as if offering all sacrifices before God, and receives atonement for all obligations and reward of thrones in the world-to-come.

And also for this reason, involvement with Torah atones for all of a sinning soul-Neffesh’s sins, as they (OBM) stated (at the end of M’na-khote 110a): “Why is it written (Vayikra 7:37) ‘This is the Torah of the burnt-offering, of the meal-offering and the sin-offering…’, and they deduce that anyone who is involved with Torah has no need for a burnt-offering, nor a meal-offering, nor a sin-offering, nor a guilt-offering. And so it’s written in Tahn-khooma parshat Tzav, and in Sh’mote Rabba parsha 38: “‘Take words with you, and return to God-YHV”H’ (Hoshei-ah 14:3)—…because Israel says… we are destitute and we have nothing from which we can bring sacrifices. The Holy One (blessed be He) said to them: ‘It is words I ask of you… and I forgive all your sins’. And ‘words’ are none other than words of Torah… .” And in Tahn-khooma Va-yahk-heil in the context of the Ark they stated that it bears the sins of Israel—that the Torah within it bears the sins of Israel. And in Zohar Sh’lahkh (159a): “Rabbee Yehuda began… ‘It is important for people to deeply contemplate the Holy One’s (blessed be He) work. It’s important for people to deeply contemplate the words of the Torah, for anyone who is involved with Torah is as if he offers all of the sacrifices in the world before the Holy One (blessed be He). And not only that, but the Holy One (blessed be He) awards atonement for all of his obligations, and they prepare for him a number of thrones in the world-to-come’.”

Both a Torah scholar and a financial supporter engage in Torah through their shared singular purpose of advancing Torah's glory—the scholar through study and the supporter through sustenance—such that even a simple craftsman whose every action and thought is devoted to enabling Torah study through his earnings is himself entirely engaged in Torah work.

Iggerot Moshe, Yoreh Deah 2:116

This responsum addresses the halakhic and communal dimensions of maintaining Torah scholars and institutions. It is useful for contemporary standards of support, even where the exact contractual formulation of Yissachar–Zevulun must be analyzed separately.
