Vocalization of Opening and Closing Verses in the Hazzan's Repetition

Sources examine whether the prayer leader recites introductory and concluding verses of the Amidah—specifically 'Hashem sefasai tiftach' and 'yihyu leratzon'—aloud or silently during the public repetition of Shemoneh Esrei. The discussion addresses the relationship between these verses and the prayer itself, their halakhic status, and the practical requirements for audible prayer.

What the sources say

The clearest ruling on 'Hashem sefasai tiftach' for the repetition comes from the Magen Avraham (111:4), who states explicitly that when the chazzan repeats the Amidah he says 'Hashem sefasai' quietly (בלחש).

The Beit Yosef (Orach Chayim 123) notes, in the name of the writings of Maharai Yisrael, that the chazzan should say 'Hashem sefasai tiftach' at the opening of the repetition, and adds that just as that opinion holds he opens with 'Hashem sefasai tiftach,' so too it likely holds that he concludes with 'yihyu leratzon' — implying both bracket the repetition in the same way.

The underlying rationale for treating these verses as part of the Amidah itself — rather than as interruptions — is that, as the Shulchan Arukh HaRav (Orach Chayim 111:1) explains, the Sages instituted 'Adonai sefatai tiftach' as obligatory within the tefillah, so that it becomes part of the tefillah and is regarded as an extended tefillah; and the Mishnah Berurah (111:1) similarly rules that since the Rabbis fixed this verse within the tefillah it has the legal status of tefillah itself.

The pasuk 'yihyu leratzon' (Tehillim 19:15) functions as the closing verse of the Amidah, and its paired status with 'Hashem sefasai' is reflected in the Beit Yosef (Orach Chayim 123)'s linkage of the two as a unit that opens and closes the repetition.

The biblical source of “Yihyu leratzon imrei fi,” a prayer that one’s words and thoughts be acceptable before God. It is used at the conclusion of the Amidah and is central to the question of its vocalization.

Mishneh Torah, Prayer and the Priestly Blessing 9:3

Describes the order of the prayer leader’s repetition of the Amidah and the requirement that he pray aloud so that the congregation can hear and respond. This provides the central framework for distinguishing the repetition itself from ancillary verses.

Beit Yosef, Orach Chayim 111

Beit Yosef, Orach Chayim 111:5

Hashem, open my lips is not considered an interruption in prayer; it should be said at the beginning of the Eighteen Benedictions because it prepares one's prayer to be accepted in place of sacrifice, and when the cantor repeats the Eighteen Benedictions aloud, he should also repeat this verse, though he need not repeat "Hear our prayer" if he already said it before his own prayer.

But "Hashem, open my lips" is not considered an interruption, for Rabbi Yochanan said: "In the beginning one says 'Hashem, open my lips,' etc." in the first chapter of Berakhot (9b). And Rabbeinu Yonah wrote an explanation: this verse is connected to the verse that follows it, which says "For You do not desire sacrifice, else I would give it, etc." David said this when he was praying about the sin with Bathsheba, which he committed intentionally, and for an intentional sin one does not bring a sacrifice. Therefore he prayed to the Creator: "Help me to concentrate in my prayer and to declare Your praise, so that my prayer will be accepted, for since You do not desire sacrifice for an intentional sin, may my prayer be atonement in place of a sacrifice." And now also, since we have no Temple and we do not offer sacrifices, we say it for the same purpose—that our prayer be accepted and desired in place of sacrifice and offering. And because it was established concerning the matter of prayer, they said it is like a long prayer. These are his words. And it appears from his words that the text should read "like a long prayer" (ketfilah arichta), and that is the version in our books. And our teacher who wrote "like a long redemption" (kegulah arichta) was not precise. It is written in the writings of Maharam Israel, Section 110: When the cantor begins the Eighteen [Benedictions] aloud, it seems he should repeat "Hashem, open my lips." But [regarding] "Shomea Tefillah" (Hear our prayer), since he already said it before his own prayer, he need not repeat it even at Minchah and Musaf. And presumably the same applies to Shacharit and Maariv, for they did not distinguish regarding the beginning before one's own prayer. The Rashba wrote in a responsum: To pray the Shacharit prayer before Shema if one finds a congregation praying, in order to pray with the congregation—as Rabbeinu Hai said regarding the evening prayer—I say that the Gaon only said this regarding the evening prayer, since it is optional. But at Shacharit, juxtaposing redemption to prayer is more important. And such has been the practice of all Israel.

Sefer Charedim, Positive Commandments from the Prophets and the Sages 3:4

Anyone who recites blessings is obligated to make the words audible to their own ears, and even the eighteen-blessing prayer recited silently must be articulated with the lips and heard by one's own ears, though the voice should not be raised so high that another person hears it to that extent, as the poskim explicitly state.

Although prayer's essence depends on intention of the heart, it also requires that one articulate each word with the lips, with precise enunciation and in a low voice so as to hear it with one's own ears; one should pronounce each word as though counting coins, and according to most poskim, if one does not articulate with the lips at all, one has not fulfilled the obligation.

Shem MiShmuel, Chayei Sara 3:8

Shem MiShmuel, Chayei Sara 3:8

Prayers and supplications generally may be recited aloud or whispered, as evidenced by the Psalms recited with musical instruments, but the shemoneh esrei specifically must be whispered because of its supreme spiritual stature—established by the Patriarchs and ordained by the men of the Great Assembly—as it ascends to the highest realms and speaks to both lower and upper worlds, which is why one begins with "Hashem sefasai tiftach" (recognizing it transcends ordinary speech), and therefore it requires heightened protection from accusers who might challenge one's worthiness to recite such an exalted prayer.

Revavos Ephraim 5:49

When the cantor repeats Shemoneh Esrei, Sephardic practice is to recite the verse "Adonai Sefatai Tiftach" aloud, whereas Ashkenazic practice is to recite it quietly (belchash).

On this pageThe passage discusses whether the cantor (shliach tzibbur), when repeating the Shemoneh Esrei, should recite the opening verse 'Adonai Sefatai Tiftach' quietly or aloud. It notes that while Sephardic practice (citing Yalkut Yosef) is to say it aloud, the Ashkenazic custom is to say it quietly before beginning the main blessing aloud.

The Shulchan Aruch rules that one must move one's lips and audibly whisper during prayer rather than pray silently in the heart alone, based on the teaching from Channah that one who raises his voice in prayer lacks faith; the Maharal explains that because a person is defined by speech, his request only becomes a true request when expressed in speech, since what is merely thought is not authentic for a physical being.
