The Prohibition Against Excessive Kaddish

Jewish law addresses the impropriety of reciting multiple Kaddishim beyond those established in the fixed prayer structure. Sources explain that Kaddish requires a genuine communal setting, proper attentiveness, and measured use in order to preserve its sanctity and the congregation's reverence.

What the sources say

The root concern is Kaddish's exceptional sanctity: the Gemara records that disciples of Rabbi Yochanan held that even one engaged in the profoundest mystical study must stop to answer 'May His great name be blessed' (Berakhot 21:2), and the Kaf HaChaim (Orach Chaim 56:1-2) records from Sefer Chasidim that a person was shown after death to have suffered because he spoke while the Chazzan recited Kaddish — illustrating just how charged each recitation is.

The early authorities established a minimum and, implicitly, a ceiling for daily Kaddish recitation: the Mishnah Berurah (55:5) enumerates the seven daily Kaddishes corresponding to 'Seven times daily I praised You' (Tehillim), anchoring each one to a distinct liturgical act — after Pesukei DeZimra, after Shemoneh Esreh, after Kedushah, after Aleinu, after Ashrei of Mincha, after Mincha, and before Maariv — while the Kaf HaChaim (Orach Chaim 55:1-2) preserves the Raavad's parallel enumeration and notes the Talmudic basis in Sotah for the Kaddish after aggadah or Mishnah study, and the Taz (Orach Chaim 55:1) similarly explains the rationale for each of the counted Kaddishes.

Against this structured backdrop, the Acharonim sounded a sharp rebuke of proliferating Kaddishes beyond the appointed number: the Arukh HaShulchan (Orach Chaim 55:1-8) declares, in strong language, that those who think it is a mitzvah to multiply Kaddishes are gravely mistaken, likening it to misusing the royal scepter of the King of Melachim, and cites the Kenesset HaGedolah's rule that just as it is proper to minimize brachot so too it is proper to minimize Kaddishes — a principle echoed word-for-word by the Mishnah Berurah (55:1-2), which adds that later authorities protested the practice of gathering ten men to recite multiple Kaddishes over verses of Torah, Mishnah, or Gemara, and reinforced by Nitei Gavriel (Aveilus vol. 2, perek 40), which holds that multiplying Kaddishes beyond the prescribed amount disrespects the holiness of God's name and weakens its sanctity.

The question of how Kaddish is distributed when multiple mourners are present is a distinct but related front of the problem: the Shulchan Arukh (Yoreh De'ah 376:4) records the allocation of Kaddishes among competing mourners — three brothers receive three Kaddishes, a stranger receives one — and Nitei Gavriel (Aveilus vol. 2, perek 46) rules that the custom is for only one person to recite Kaddish at a time, with lots drawn so each mourner says one Kaddish slowly and clearly with the congregation responding Amen, while Nitei Gavriel (Aveilus vol. 2, perek 41) addresses the separate issue of multiple mourners reciting simultaneously, stating that ideally they should do so in unison though precise word-by-word synchrony is not strictly required.

The Minchas Yitzchak (9:122) was asked whether four brothers saying Kaddish for their mother should each lead a separate minyan so every one could recite all the Kaddishes, or whether they should remain together in one minyan; after surveying the Rema, the Levush, and conflicting practices regarding apportionment by lot versus recitation of all Kaddishes by all mourners, he concludes that while there is no clear obligation to divide into separate minyanim, the question was sufficiently complex that he could not issue a definitive ruling.

The practical responsa also clarify where the line falls: B'Mareh HaBazak (IV:117) rules that a mourner who says Kaddish at an early minyan and then stays to pray with a later minyan may also say Kaddish there, and this does not fall under the prohibition against multiplying Kaddishes, while B'Mareh HaBazak (VII:2) rules that in communities where the custom is to say Kaddish Yatom after Shir HaKavod (Anim Zemirot), there is no problem of ribui Kaddishes in doing so.

B'Mareh HaBazak (IV:118) addresses a community practice in which mourners of the shiva household recite Kaddish separately from other mourners present in the house of mourning, and rules that this practice is problematic precisely because it creates unnecessary multiplication of Kaddishes and ought to be abolished.

The reading of Shevet HaLevi (vol. 8, siman 163, question 3) addresses a related practical question in this general area of the sources.

Gesher HaChaim (ch. 30) records that the Acharonim held one should not proliferate Kaddishes beyond the standard measure, and that Kaddish is properly recited after Torah words, aggadah, a drashah, or a eulogy — specifically with a minyan — or after a psalm of Tehillim.

Tractate Soferim 19:12

The blessing for mourners is recited in the evening after prayer before the congregation over a cup, and on Shabbat when mourning is not practiced publicly; according to Rabbi Eliezer ben Horkenus, after the Temple's destruction the practice was instituted that grooms and mourners come to the synagogue to receive acts of kindness, with the mourners standing outside or in front of the synagogue building, and after the cantor finishes the additional prayer service, he goes to find the mourners and their relatives, blesses them, and then recites kaddish—but the kaddish recited for the future world is said only over the study of Torah and derash, not otherwise.

Tractate Soferim 10:7

The passage prohibits saying kaddish and barchu with fewer than ten people, though authorities in the West permit it with seven; it notes that the sages ordained specific blessings after the redemption blessing and after the completion of the eighteen-blessing prayer to allow those who did not hear them to fulfill their obligation, citing Rabbi Yochanan's teaching that one may pray all day.

Berakhot 21

Berakhot 21:2

The Gemara presents a dispute over whether one may interrupt prayer to recite "May His great name be blessed" in kaddish, with Rabbi Yehuda and Rabbi Shimon teaching that one may interrupt for this formula even during the study of Ma'aseh Merkava, though the halakha is not ruled in accordance with their opinion.

However, a dilemma was raised before the Sages of the yeshiva: What is the ruling? Is one permitted to interrupt his prayer in order to recite: “May His great name be blessed” in kaddish? When Rav Dimi came from Eretz Yisrael to Babylonia, he said: Rabbi Yehuda and Rabbi Shimon, disciples of Rabbi Yoḥanan, said: One may not interrupt his prayer for anything, except for: “May His great name be blessed,” as even if one was engaged in the exalted study of the Act of the Divine Chariot [Ma’aseh Merkava] (see Ezekiel 1) he stops to recite it. However, the Gemara concludes: The halakha is not in accordance with his opinion.

When multiple mourners are present, the custom is that those mourning a parent have priority for saying kaddish during the first thirty days after burial, after which all kaddishim of the day belong to that mourner; other relatives say kaddish only when there are no mourners for parents, though some places compromise by having other relatives say fewer kaddishim than those mourning parents, and mourners recite kaddish even on Shabbat and Yom Tov (though not the full prayers on those days), while on weekdays those able to pray recite the full prayer service rather than only kaddish yatom, and the custom is to recite kaddish and prayer for only eleven months so as not to declare the parents wicked (as a wicked person's judgment is twelve months).

In the custom of the community, when mourners in a house of mourning include both those in the seven days of mourning and others, the household mourners recite kaddish separately and then the other mourners recite kaddish, creating a problem of unnecessary multiplication of kaddishes; the practice of reciting multiple kaddishes presents difficulties, and therefore this custom should be discontinued.

B'Mareh HaBazak Volume IV 117

One who arrives at the synagogue and finds a first minyan at the end of prayer may recite kaddish with that minyan; if he wishes, he may also pray with a second minyan and recite kaddishes there, and this does not fall under the restriction that later authorities warned against regarding multiplying kaddishes.

Maamar Mordechai Hilchot Shabbat, Chelek 2 39:57

Maamar Mordechai Hilchot Shabbat, Chelek 2 39:57

There is a custom in this city that when a yahrzeit falls on a weekday, orphans begin reciting kaddish from the evening prayer of the preceding Shabbat through the end of the afternoon service on yahrzeit day; if yahrzeit falls on Shabbat, they begin from the evening of the preceding Shabbat and continue through the end of the following Shabbat, and this custom is cited in Shlomei Tzibur, though the Kuntres HaKavanos appears to indicate that the Arizal recited kaddish for his father only on one day of yahrzeit, at night and during the day.

When two people recite kaddish, the congregation should answer after the one who begins first; if one begins only slightly before the other, the congregation responds with "amen vamen.

Minchas Yitzchak 9:122

A questioner asks whether four brothers saying kaddish for their mother should each lead a separate minyan so that each can recite all the kaddishes, or whether they should remain in one minyan; the respondent surveys various sources (including the Rema and Levush) on how kaddishim are divided among mourners, notes conflicting practices regarding whether all mourners recite every kaddish or kaddishim are apportioned by lot or number of sons, and concludes that while there is no clear obligation to divide the minyanim, he cannot give a definitive ruling due to pressing circumstances.

B'Mareh HaBazak Volume VII 2

The passage discusses a complaint about the burden on the congregation and an increase in kaddishes, noting that during certain times a mourner in a year of mourning requests adding a kaddish yatom after "Shir HaKavod," claiming it is a mistaken custom, and asks whether this request constitutes the problematic ribui kadishim that has been warned against or whether the custom should be changed to accommodate him; it then notes that some places have practiced saying kaddish yatom after Shir HaKavod without it being considered a problem of ribui kadishim.

When multiple deceased are mourned, one may recite a single kaddish for two deceased persons while directing the accompanying prayers toward both of them, and similarly one may light a single candle for two deceased.
