Crowning Hashem as King Through the Shofar

Reb Noson of Breslov teaches how the shofar on Rosh Hashanah serves as the vehicle through which human beings accept divine sovereignty and reveal Hashem's kingship in the world. The shofar awakens repentance and repairs the concealment that obscures God's מלכות.

What the sources say

The shofar on Rosh Hashana is bound up with the awakening of teshuvah, teaches Likutei Halakhot (Laws of the New Year 5:1-7): Rosh Hashana is the first of the Ten Days of Repentance, and through the teshuvah that begins on that day one rises to a dimension beyond time — the aspect of Yitzchak being included within Avraham, who represents that transcendent realm.

The sounding of the shofar is the primary vehicle for revealing and establishing Hashem's kingship in the world, as Rav Eliezer Melamed (Peninei Halakhah, Days of Awe 3:6) explains: the blessing of Shofarot concerns the disclosure of divine sovereignty through the shofar's voice — as at Sinai, and as will be in the future when the great shofar gathers in all the exiles — while the shofar's broken sound expresses that sovereignty before which we stand in awe and repentance.

The essential service of Rosh Hashana is the building and crowning of the sefirah of Malkhut, which lies hidden and concealed on that day, and this crowning is accomplished through the sounding of the shofar, as Maamarim Melukatim (Rosh Hashana 5747) further teaches — connecting the word "kese" (concealment) in "tekuah bachodesh shofar" to the hiddenness of Malkhut on that day, and interpreting the blast itself as the perpetual renewal through which each moment of service becomes wholly new.

Even when the shofar cannot physically be sounded — as on Rosh Hashana that falls on Shabbat outside the Temple — the spiritual reality of the sounding is not absent, because every mitzvah performed below enacts a corresponding spiritual act above, so that Israel's shofar-sounding below draws forth a shofar-sounding in the supernal realms; Maamarim Melukatim (Erev Rosh Hashana 5743) concludes from this that the piyyutim of shofar-verses are therefore recited even on that Shabbat.

Likutei Halakhot (Laws of the New Year 3:1:1) opens a dedicated teaching on the inner meaning of Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur, and the shofar blasts together.

The passage, explaining a teaching about shofar on Rosh Hashana when it falls on Shabbat, states that all the mitzvot performed by Jews below effect corresponding spiritual mitzvot above—and accordingly, when Israel sounds the shofar below, a shofar-sounding is thereby enacted in the supernal realms, which explains why the piyyutim (shofar verses) are recited even on Rosh Hashana that falls on Shabbat despite the shofar not being sounded in practice outside the Temple on that day.

The passage explains that on Rosh Hashanah, the essential service is building and crowning the sefirah of Malkhuth (Kingdom), which is hidden and concealed on that day, and this crowning is accomplished through the sounding of the shofar; the passage further interprets the command "tekuah" (blow) in "tekuah bachudessh shofar" (blow the shofar in the month) to mean one must serve Hashem with constant renewal—treating each action and moment as entirely new—which connects to the power and strength of the shofar blast itself, such that through this perpetual renewal every moment of service becomes something unprecedented.

Likutei Halakhot, Orach Chaim, Laws of the New Year 5:1-7

Rav Natan develops the connection between Rosh Hashanah, the revelation of divine kingship, and the shofar. The shofar awakens the process by which human beings accept Hashem's sovereignty and repair the concealment that prevents His מלכות from being recognized.

Rav Eliezer Melamed (Peninei Halakhah, Days of Awe 3:6)

פניני הלכה, ימים נוראים ג׳:ו׳

Peninei Halakhah, Days of Awe 3:6

The core purpose of the day of remembrance (Rosh Hashana) is to crown Hashem as king; the blessing of Zichronot addresses His kingship over the world as the basis for His remembrance of all creatures, the blessing of Shofrot concerns the revelation of His kingship in the world through the sound of the shofar (as at Mount Sinai and as will occur in the future when the great shofar gathers the exiles to bow before Him in Jerusalem), and the shofar blast itself expresses His kingship, before which we stand in contrition and repentance.
