What the sources say

The liturgical anchor of the theme is the phrase from the Rosh Hashanah Musaf prayer: "זה היום תחילת מעשיך" — "this is the day, the beginning of Your works" — which the Shem MiShmuel (Rosh Hashanah 5) reads as expressing that Rosh Hashanah is a genuine renewal of creation from within: the innermost renewal occurring at night, a subtler inner renewal during the day, while the external face of the world shows no visible change on Rosh Hashanah beyond any other day.

The Hasidic masters understand Rosh Hashanah as the source-point of all vitality before it differentiates into physical reality: the Sefat Emet (Rosh Hashanah 1) teaches that "Rosh Hashanah" means the origin prior to the division of divine sustenance, because when God's life-force enters the world under the conditions of time and nature it undergoes transformation from the spiritual to the physical — and Rosh Hashanah is that very source before any such transformation takes place.

This renewal is comprehensive, encompassing every tier of creation: Maamar HaChochmah (Chelek 1, 9:6) maps the phrases of the same liturgical passage onto four categories — human souls, the souls of all other living and growing things, all physical bodies, and souls that are outside the body — concluding that "this is the day, the beginning of Your works" means that on this day the renewal of the entire creation commences.

The theological implication is that Rosh Hashanah is the moment when God stands, as it were, as King over His world, making it precisely the right occasion to pray that His kingship be fully revealed: Maamar HaChochmah (Chelek 1, 1:6) states that this principle is the very foundation upon which the entire added liturgical text of Rosh Hashanah is built.

The Sefat Emet connects the giving of life on "this day" to the Akeidah, noting that Avraham asked that the merit of the binding of Yitzchak be remembered for his descendants on Rosh Hashanah in mercy — for since this day gives vitality to the entire year, it is "the known day" of which it is said "today I have begotten you" (Sefat Emet, Devarim, Rosh Hashanah 8:3).

The annual judgment of Rosh Hashanah is not merely administrative but regenerative: the Sefat Emet (Devarim, Rosh Hashanah 21) cites the Midrash that when Israel merits, they become a new creation on Rosh Hashanah, and reads "remember the days of old" as referring to creation itself, while "consider the years of generation after generation" speaks of the providential governance that is renewed and takes different forms each year according to the merit of each generation.

A distinction between the two "new years" illuminates what is unique about Rosh Hashanah in Tishrei: the Sefat Emet (Shemot, Bo 23:2) explains that Tishrei is the new year for the entire world, whereas Nissan is the new year only for Israel — the renewal of Nissan coming through Israel's own power, reflecting that Israel stands above time and has dominion over it.

The word "זה" — "this" — carries its own significance as a deictic term pointing to something revealed and present: Tehillim 118:24 declares "this is the day that God has made," and the Sulam on Zohar, Bo 112 explains the term "zeh" (this) as the masculine, revealed aspect, distinguishing it from the feminine "zot" — a grammatical-mystical distinction that undergirds the use of "this day" in pointing to what is manifest.

Tzitz Eliezer (18:37) is a Rosh Hashanah sermon delivered before the blowing of the shofar in 5749 (1988), and Tzitz Eliezer (18:37) raises the question of the inner logical connection implied by the word "ki" (for/because) linking "this is the day, the beginning of Your works" to "for it is a statute for Israel, a judgment for the God of Jacob"; and Tzitz Eliezer (18:37) concludes, on our reading of the cited page, that the phrase "Hayom Harat Olam" in the Rosh Hashanah prayers is illuminated by the position of the Ari z"l that Tishrei represents the initial divine thought and conception of creation, with Nissan representing the actual birth.

Psalms 118:24

“This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” The verse is the scriptural foundation for the phrase “Zeh Hayom,” framing the day as a divine creation and a cause for rejoicing.

This is the day that GOD has made— let us exult and rejoice on it.

Maamar HaChochmah, Chelek 1 9:6

Maamar HaChochmah, Chelek 1 9:6

On Rosh Hashanah, the divine power of judgment operates through remembrance and decree (expressed in "tavicha chok u-zicharon"), encompassing souls of humans ("lehafkad kol ruach"), life-force in animals and plants ("u-nefesh"), physical bodies ("lehizkher ma'asim rabim"), hidden souls outside the body ("ve-hamon nistarot"), and the renewal of all creation that begins on this day ("zeh hayom techlat ma'asecha").

Maamar HaChochmah, Chelek 1 1:6

On Rosh Hashanah, the Master stands as it were in the capacity of King over His world, and therefore that hour is fitting to pray before Him to reveal His kingship completely in the world and thereby repair the world, and upon this principle the entire added text of the service is built.

The Sefat Emet repeatedly presents Rosh Hashanah as the yearly renewal of creation and Israel’s role in revealing God’s kingship, offering a Hasidic parallel to the Rebbe’s edited maamar.

Just as at creation, so in each generation on this day—the beginning of Your works, a remembrance of the first day—the renewal of creation occurs in the innermost dimension at night, and in the inner dimension alone during the day, for in the external aspects of the world there is no novelty on Rosh Hashanah beyond other days.

Sefat Emet, Deuteronomy, Rosh HaShanah 21

The essential aspect of Rosh Hashanah is the judgment concerning who merits inscription in the book of life, and this corresponds to two dimensions: remembering the days of eternity, which refers to creation, and understanding the years of generation after generation, which refers to ever-renewing governance that changes each year according to the merits of the generations—as indicated by the passage in Bamidbar regarding what is done on Rosh Hashanah, namely that when one merits, a new creation occurs.

Sefat Emet, Exodus, Bo 23:2

Sefat Emet, Exodus, Bo 23:2

The distinction between Tishrei, which is Rosh Hashanah for the entire world, and Nisan, which is Rosh Hashanah only for Israel, is that Nisan represents a renewal that comes through the power of the Jewish people—as exemplified by the offering of new produce from the new harvest—and since the Holy One gave Israel the authority over the sanctification of months and the fixing of festivals, the Jewish people thereby stand above time and have dominion over it.

Tzitz Eliezer 18:37

Tzitz Eliezer 18:37

The passage raises a question about the logical connection (marked by 'ki') between the opening phrase of the Rosh Hashanah prayer—"this day is the beginning of Your works"—and the concluding phrase about statute and judgment for Israel, then explains through the Ari z"l that Tishrei represents the primordial divine conception of creation (in contrast to Nissan's physical creation), and argues that on Rosh Hashanah the Jewish people appeal to this original divine intention to govern with mercy by declaring God's kingship through unconditional, servant-like obedience.

On this pageThis is a sermon delivered on Rosh Hashanah 5749 (1988) before the blowing of the Shofar. The author raises a question regarding the connection in the liturgy between the day being the "beginning of Your works" and the phrase "for it is a statute (chok) for Israel, a judgment for the God of Jacob," seeking to understand the inner logical connection implied by the word 'ki' (for/because). The author explains the liturgical phrase 'Hayom Harat Olam' in the Rosh Hashanah prayers by citing the Ari z"l on the Talmudic dispute over whether the world was created in Tishrei or Nissan. He argues that Tishrei represents the initial divine thought and conception (pregnancy/harah) of creation, whereas the physical creation occurred in Nissan. On Rosh Hashanah, we appeal to this primordial divine thought which was intended to govern the world with mercy. The author explains the inner significance of the Rosh Hashanah prayers, focusing on the declaration of God's kingship through Malchuyot, Zichronot, and Shofrot. He explains that proclaiming God's sovereignty represents a commitment of unconditional, servant-like obedience ('שתמליכוני עליכם'), which makes the Jewish people worthy of divine mercy and a favorable judgment.

Sulam on Zohar, Bo 112

The passage explains that the Sefira called "zot" (this), which is Malkhut, is called "woman" because it is taken from "ish" (man)—referring to Ze'ir Anpin, which is called "zeh" (this/he) and represents the male principle—as exemplified by the phrase "ki zeh Moshe ha'ish" (for this Moses is the man).
