Rav Kook's Intellectual Foundations in Earlier Jewish Thought

These sources explore how Rav Kook's teachings on the holiness of Israel, redemption, and the integration of spiritual and national life draw upon and develop themes from classical Jewish philosophy and mysticism. The texts examine conceptual continuities between Rav Kook's vision and the thought of the Ramchal, Maharal, Shelah, and Gra regarding Torah's relationship to the Jewish people, divine governance, and character refinement.

What the sources say

The most direct thread connecting Rav Kook's predecessors to his thought runs through the Ramchal's demonstration in Kalach Pitchei Chokhmah (1:3) that the entire structure of Kabbalah rests on one foundation — that only the Divine Will truly exists and all else flows from it — and his elaboration in Da'at Tevunot (36:1) that God's absolute unity means not merely that He alone exists but that He alone governs, with no force capable of restraining His will; Rav Kook's insistence in Orot HaKodesh (1:1:1) that sacred wisdom differs from all other knowledge precisely because it flows from the very source of life and has the power to reshape the soul of whoever engages with it draws directly on this foundation.

The Ramchal's teaching in Da'at Tevunot (169) that the Master of the universe operates through two interlocking paths — reward and punishment on one side, and the order of providential governance (mazal) on the other — choosing between them according to what best serves the world's perfection, and his account in Derekh Hashem, Part Two (4:1) that righteous individuals may bear afflictions not for their own sins but for the benefit of their generation, because Divine Wisdom arranged for the perfected to be able to elevate others — these ideas of graduated, purposeful providence feed directly into the universal moral vision Rav Kook articulates in Orot HaKodesh (3:1:1), where he describes an Israelite moral sensibility that extends to every creature and demands expression on a cosmic scale.

The Maharal's two central pillars — his argument in Netzach Yisrael (1:2) that exile is itself proof of inevitable redemption because nothing can remain permanently outside its natural place, and his teaching in Netzach Yisrael (11:1) that Israel's unique relationship to God is not merely that of creatures to Creator but that of children who emanate, in a manner of speaking, from God's own essence — resonate throughout Rav Kook's proclamation in Orot, Lights from Darkness, Israel and its Rebirth (1) that the supreme truth pulsing within the Jewish soul is the force that will raise up all who have fallen and illuminate the entire world, and his insistence in Orot, Lights from Darkness, Land of Israel (1:2) that the sanctity of Eretz Yisrael cannot be grasped by rational analysis alone but only through the spirit of God that rests on the nation as a whole.

The Maharal's further teaching in Tiferet Yisrael (1:6) that the mitzvot of the Torah are uniquely suited to the human being precisely because they correspond to the divine soul within him, and the Shelah's elaboration in Shenei Luchot HaBerit, Torah Shebikhtav, Introduction (14) that Torah is the imprint of the Divine and that Israel — called Adam — is the imprint of Torah, with the 248 positive commandments and 365 prohibitions mirroring the limbs and sinews of both the physical body and the supernal Adam, together provide the architectonic framework for Rav Kook's account in Orot, The Process of Ideals in Israel of the divine ideal fused into the national form, and for his description in Orot HaTeshuvah (5:1) of teshuvah operating simultaneously on the physical, spiritual, and intellectual planes of the human person.

The Shelah's teaching in Shenei Luchot HaBerit, Aseret HaDibrot, Introduction that the first of the Ten Commandments — the declaration of God's sovereignty — encompasses all the others, just as the first utterance of creation encompasses all ten, and that faith is the single pillar on which all else rests, is closely paralleled by the Gra's student tradition recorded in Kol HaTor (1:1), where the Gra is described as having been granted insight into all the intimations of the beginning of redemption, understanding Mashiach ben Yosef's mission as rooted in the light of Torah and the ingathering of exiles — a messianic-national theology that Rav Kook absorbs and transforms into the living national ideal described throughout Orot, Lights from Darkness, Israel and its Rebirth (1).

The Gra's school, as represented by Nefesh HaChayim, Gate IV (1:1) and Nefesh HaChayim, Gate I (18:6), insists that Torah study is an overwhelming obligation day and night and that the soul of Israel, even when submerged in sin, retains an indestructible upper aspect through which it can be raised — a spiritual anthropology grounded in the Gra's own reading, recorded in Even Sheleimah (1:1), that all divine service depends on the repair of character traits, which are the garments of the mitzvot and the roots of all sin; Rav Kook's tripartite account of teshuvah in Orot HaTeshuvah (5:1) — natural, faith-based, and intellectual — builds on precisely this layered understanding of the human soul's capacity for restoration.

The Ramchal's Kabbalistic exegesis in Adir Bamarom, Beur Idra Rabba (95a) — that the Torah's entire narrative, including the account of the kings of Edom, is to be read as an account of the breaking of the vessels and their rectification, and that all of Torah's stories encode the names and processes of the sefirot — provides the speculative-kabbalistic grammar that underlies Rav Kook's insistence in Orot HaKodesh (1:1:1) that sacred wisdom, unlike secular knowledge, reaches into and reshapes the very substance of the one who learns it, because it flows from the source that formed the worlds.

The Ramchal's account in רמח"ל, מאמר העקרים, בענין תורה שבעל פה that the sages received the foundations of all rulings from Moshe and understood them to be hinted at in the written Torah through known modes of allusion — with the labor of finding those hints being itself divinely desired — supplies an epistemological grounding for the organic, living relationship between written and oral Torah that runs through both the Shelah and the Gra's students, and which Rav Kook inherits when he speaks of the spirit of holiness illuminating the deepest layers of Israelite thought, as in Orot, Lights from Darkness, Land of Israel (1:2).

The Chazon Ish and other modern poskim are not directly in view here, but the path from Ramchal through Maharal, Shelah, and Gra to Rav Kook is also illuminated by adjacent sources on the sheet: Derekh Hashem, Part One (2:1) traces the transformation of human nature after Adam's sin as the metaphysical backdrop against which all subsequent history — exile, providence, and redemption — unfolds, directly prefiguring the historical-teleological arc that is central to Rav Kook; and Sha'arei Kedusha, Part 3 (7:5), in its prescription of the path of the ancient chassidim through teshuvah, mitzvot, Torah, and isolation leading to ruach hakodesh, maps the very spiritual itinerary that Rav Kook describes as the inner life of the people and the individual soul reaching toward sanctity.

Netzach Yisrael 1

Netzach Yisrael 1:2

The Maharal introduces the enduring, non-natural character of Israel and redemption, treating exile and restoration through a metaphysical account of Jewish existence. This is among the most relevant Maharal works for tracing conceptual parallels with Rav Kook.

There is another reason to explain the concept of exile first. The exile itself is proof and clear imperative for redemption. This is because there is no doubt that exile is an alteration and departure from the normal order. The Blessed Holy One arranged each nation in the place which is appropriate for it, so he arranged the People of Israel into the place which is appropriate for it, namely the Land of Israel. Exile from their place is a complete alteration and departure [from that order]. Anything which departs from its natural place, which is outside its place, is unable to stay in the place which is not natural for it. Rather they need to return to their natural place. Because if they remain in a place which is unnatural for them, then the unnatural would become natural. And it is impossible for the unnatural to become natural. A metaphor: it is like trying to force fire to stay down, when it's natural state is to rise - or like trying to hold up solid matter, when its natural state is to fall to the earth. If you could achieve that, then you would be making the unnatural natural. Similarly with the People of Israel themselves. If they were to stay in exile for ever, which is not the right place for them to be (since the right place for them, according to the order of existence, is the Land of Israel under their own sovereignty and not under the sovereignty of any other). Just like everything in natural existence, each one has its own place as our sages decreed (Pirkei Avot 4:3) "There is nothing which does not have its place". Each thing under its own sovereignty. If they would remain in exile forever, then this thing (unnaturally standing outside their place) would become natural. Only natural things can stand permanently, because the nature which the Blessed Holy One gave to each thing is what sustains it such that it is established to stand forever. If an unnatural state of affairs were to exist forever, even though it was not according to the order and nature of existence, then the nature of that thing would be loosened and nullified completely for no purpose, and such a thing could not happen. Similarly, dispersal is not a natural state of affairs. Just as each thing returns to its place, so dispersed and separated parts have to return to [become] one entity. This is clear to anyone of intelligence, that all parts have one essence to them. If so, why would there be a division between them, and not unity, since they are one thing? Therefore all dispersal stands only to be coalesced together. Therefore the dispersal of the People of Israel among the nations is a thing which exists outside of nature, since (the People of Israel) is one nation, suitable to be standing together as one, as is found in the case of all natural things which are not divided into two. Rather that they should be joined together. Similarly "All the rivers flow into the sea" (Kohelet 1:7) to be gathered together. One thing is not divided. So since the Jewish nation is a nation united more than any other nation, not divided or separated , it is appropriate that they should be gathered together. From this we can see that dispersal is particularly unnatural for them. It is impossible to say that this state of affairs is only because of sin and iniquity, after all the dispersal of the People of Israel is so unnatural, because if this were to become permanent, then the unnatural would have to become natural.

Gevurot Hashem 1

Gevurot Hashem 1:1

The Maharal's opening discussion frames the Exodus as an event whose meaning exceeds ordinary historical causality and expresses Israel's distinctive metaphysical status. This offers a foundational comparison for Rav Kook's theology of redemption and Jewish nationhood.

Who can speak of the mighty acts of Adonai; Proclaim all God's praise? Ps. 106:2 This verse teaches us that to praise the Holy One is impossible from two perspectives. First, one cannot fully express the greatness of God’s acts. Second, since God's acts are without end, it is impossible to praise all of them. Therefore both qualitatively and quantitatively one cannot fully praise God. Qualitatively, words cannot fully capture the greatness of God's might and quantitatively, one cannot mention all of God's acts that deserve praise. This is the meaning of the verse from Psalms. Regarding the qualitative nature of God’s acts, Scripture states, "Who can speak of (milel) the mighty acts of God." The word milel, tell, implies saying something new as in the verse, "Who would have said (milel) that Abraham that Sarah would suckle children?" (Gen. 21:7) The second half of the verse expresses the great number of God's acts, "Who can proclaim all God's praise?" The expression, "all God's praise," implies the great number of acts God has performed. The Talmud relates: "A certain reader went down (to lead prayers) in the presence of Rabbi Hanina and said, 'O God, great, mighty, terrible, majestic, powerful, awful, strong, fearless, sure and honored.' Rabbi Hanina waited till he had finished, and then said to him, 'Have you concluded all the praise of God? Why do we say all this? Even with the three terms that we do say (haGadol haGibor, v’haNorah, from Deut. 10:17) , had not Moses mentioned them in the Torah and the Men of the Great Synagogue not inserted them in the Amida, we should not have been able to mention them, and you say all these and still go on! It is as if an earthly king had a million denarii of gold and someone praised him as possessing silver ones.'" (B. Berachot 33b) Maimonides explains this to mean that one should not try to praise the extent of God's greatness nor mention all of God's mighty acts since they are without number. This is the meaning of the parable: switching gold with silver demeans the quality of the praise just as praising the king for having thousands of denarii when he actually has thousands upon thousands diminishes the king and would be an insult to him.

Tiferet Yisrael 1

Tiferet Yisrael 1:6

The Maharal explains the unique character of Torah and its fittingness to Israel, grounding Torah in a transcendent order beyond ordinary human culture. This is a strong source for comparison with Rav Kook's accounts of Torah's organic and national life.

Kol HaTor 1:1

Kol HaTor 1:1

This work, attributed to the Gra's school, presents redemption as a gradual historical process advanced through practical and spiritual efforts in the Land of Israel. It is especially relevant to Rav Kook's messianic and national thought, though its attribution and transmission should be handled critically.

Da'at Tevunot 36

Da'at Tevunot 36:1

Ramchal explains the distinction between הנהגת היחוד and הנהגת המשפט, presenting history as governed by a hidden divine unity that ultimately brings creation toward its intended good. This is a particularly important conceptual antecedent for Rav Kook's reading of apparent disorder and redemption.

Said the Intellect - Yes, Certainly this is the matter in generality. But this think needs deeper examination. This this is exactly what is said in the text (Deuteronomy 4:38), "You have been shown to know [that HaShem is the G-d] there is none other than He alone", that in explanation [the Rabbis] may their memory be blessed (Sanhedrin 67:), "Even for a matter of sorcery". And this is the same as when we say that the Holy One blessed is he is one, it is not sufficient to understand the he is singular in his existence, which is the same as saying that there is no required existence other than He, and there is no Creator other than He, but we need to understand more, that there is no leader or ruler other than he; and there is no guide to his world or to any creation in his world other than He; And there is nothing that holds back his hand, or prevents his will, and this is that his rule is singular and complete. And this is the matter that is explained in the text (Deuteronomy 32:39), "See now that I, [I am He and there is no G-d with me], I bring death and give life, [I wound and I heal] and none can be saved from my hand"; and similarly it says (Job 23:13) "And he is Singular and who can turn him back [that which he wants he does]; and similarly we testify before him (Job 9:12) "[When He suddenly takes away, who can turn him back] who would say to him what shall He do". And know that his is a great fundamental principle for our certain faith, like we will write further inside with the help of heaven: And indeed the believer in singularity and understander of its subject, need to believe that the Holy One blessed is he is one solitary and unique, who has no one who prevents or withholds him at all in any aspect or side, rather he alone rules over all. Needless to say there is no domain that opposes him G-d forbid, rather he himself created good and negative forces, as it says (Isaiah 45:7), "The maker of light and creator of darkness, maker of peace and creator of negative, I am haShem them maker of all these"; that there is no other beneath him who will have control in the world, meaning that there is no officer or second power, like the idol worshipers thought. And not only this, rather that he alone is the supervisor of all his creations with individual supervision, and nothing is born into the world except from his will and from his hand, and not through happenstance, and not through nature, and not through luck; rather he is the Judge of all the earth and all that is upon it, and decrees all that shall be done in the high places and below, until the end of all the levels throughout all of creation. And from the the greatness of his singular rulership, it is that he has nothing that compels or forces him at all and all the laws that he decreed - they are all dependent on his will, and it is not that he is compelled in them at all. Behold if he wanted - he can subjugate his will, as if that were possible, to the actions of man, as in the matter we learned (Avot 3:15), "And all is according to the majority of the action..."; And when he wants - he isn't concerned about all the actions, and gives his goodness to whom he wishes, and like he said to Moshe our teacher may he rest in peace (Brachot 7a) "And I give grace to whom I give grace - even though they are not deserving". And it has also been said (Job 35:6), "If you sin what action does it have on him, and if your transgressions multiply what does it do to him"; and then it says (Jeremiah 50:20), "...the sin of Israel shall be sought and there will be none and the sins of Judah and they will not be found for I will forgive those whom I permit to remain."; and similarly it says (Isaiah 48:11), "For myself for myself I shall do for me, for how shall it be profaned.."; (Isaiah 43:25) "It is I, It is I who erases your transgressions for my own sake and your sins shall I not remember". And similarly it says (Zechariah 3:9), "...and I will remove the sin of this land in one day". This is our comfort in our subject, for he will not count our actions, nor for our merits will he wait, nor due to our deficient actions exchange us [for another people], rather because of the oath that he swore to our forefathers and the covenant which he made. Behold even if there were no merit in Israel - When them set time arrives, the day blocked in his heart, behold in any event he will certainly save us, for he is the master of all and can do so if he wants: And indeed this is what we want to believe with faith. But the clarity of this truth is revealed in all actions, for all creations and for all the assurances like all that we explained earlier. And we find, that the revelation of His singularity is that which the heavenly will wanted, and through this intent did he make the rules of his creations; and all the events that revolve and turn, they are what are required to arrive at this purpose. And behold we can say that all the world and that which fills it, and all that we can examine in it, everything is dependent and exists on the matter of the completeness of His singularity may He be blessed, that he wanted to reveal through action to the eyes of these creations. And borne from this is that when we understand the revelation of His singularity and upon that which it depends, we will also understand the rules of these creations, how they are arranged, and upon what they exist:

Derekh Hashem, Part Two, On Personal Providence 4:1

Ramchal discusses providence and the ordered relationship between divine governance and human existence. The passage supplies a systematic metaphysical background for examining Rav Kook's treatment of historical providence and redemption.

Afflictions to the righteous for the good of their generation or for the good of all the world: However besides all of this, there is another matter that follows from the two parts of [divine] direction that we mentioned - the personal and the communal. And that is that the Supreme Wisdom surely looked down upon all that was fit to be present for the improvement of the species from which It would make a group of the perfected ones that we mentioned above, and saw that it would be very good for them, that there be power in some of them to help others and benefit them. [This] means that the matter not be absolute, that only one who comes to perfection from his own ability be from those counted in the group of those in the world to come. Rather even one whose actions have brought him [to a point] that, if he were to be accompanied by someone else more worthy than him, he could benefit from perfection - can enter into this category. However he will be on the lowest level, which is the level of one dependent upon his fellow. And it comes out that the only one to be completely pushed off from perfection is the one who is not fit to enjoy from it - not on account of himself and not on account of being accompanied by someone else. And through this, salvation is more plentiful, and more [individuals] benefit. However those that benefit and cause others to benefit are certainly greater in the group, and will be the leaders. And those that need to be accompanied by them will be subservient to them and will require them. And in order that there be a place for this great refinement, [God] connected the individuals, one with the other, from the beginning. And this is the matter of "All of Israel are guarantors for one another," that they, may their memory be blessed, mentioned (Shevuot 39a). For through this, they are surely found to be connected with each other, and not [be in a situation of] each person separated for himself. And surely the good trait is always greater; such that since they are [punished], one for the other, with sin; all the more so does one effect the other with merit. However, according to this principle, it is set up that troubles and afflictions may come to a righteous man, and it be as atonement for his generation. And behold the righteous are obligated to lovingly accept the afflictions that are prepared for them for the benefit of their generation, as one of them would lovingly accept the afflictions that would be fit for him on his own account. And with this action, he benefits his generation; since he atones for it. And he himself ascends a great deal, as he is made into one of the leaders of the group of those who will be in the world to come, as we have mentioned. However in this very same category, there is another one of even greater stature than the one we [just] mentioned. And that is because the one we mentioned is when the righteous man be struck for the people of his generation who were fit for a very great punishment and they were close to annihilation or destruction; so he atones for them with his afflictions and saves them in this world and helps them also in the world to come. However there are other afflictions that are given to the greatest of the pious who have already perfected themselves. And they are to help that which is necessary for all of the processes of the direction [of the world] to reach their end - which is perfection. And the explanation of the matter is that surely from the angle of the original arrangement that was designed for the direction of the world and its processes, there was already a need for man to suffer a little pain, in order for him - along with all of the world - to reach perfection. And that is what arises and proceeds as a result of the concealment of His light, may He be blessed, and the hiding of His countenance which He set down as one of the foundations of the conditions of man's state, as we have written earlier. And all the more is this so once corruptions proliferated in the world - from the perspective of sins upon great and enormous sins that were done in it - such that hiddenness increased and the good was concealed. And it comes out that the world and its creatures are in a lowly and bad state. And it is nevertheless necessary that through the processes that His amazing Wisdom unfurled, matters reach their refinement. And among the fundamental processes is that men should receive punishments according to their evil [deeds] until the [divine] trait of justice is satisfied. However the Master, blessed be He, arranged that the perfect and important ones could repair [matters] for the sake of others, as we have written; and that the trait of justice would strike them instead of striking the whole world. Nevertheless, since they themselves are perfect and are only being afflicted for the sake of others, it is certain that the trait of justice will be satisfied with a little from them in the place of much from the sinners themselves. Moreover, through this, their merit increases and their power is strengthened. And all the more so are they able to 'repair that which others have twisted.' So not only will they repair what is from the people of their generation, but will also [do so] for all that the world has been corrupted - from when there were [first] sins upon it, up until now. And they will certainly afterwards be the heads of the leaders in the group of the perfected, and the closest ones to Him, may He be blessed. But behold all that we have mentioned until now according to the angle of justice is also understood from the angle of what [needs to] occur, according to the truth of its arrangements, as we have written above. For note that with sins, pollution is increased and strengthened among people, and it causes His light, may He be blessed, to be hidden and concealed, with one concealment after another. And according to the removal of this pollution and the purification of the creatures from it; so does His light, may He be blessed, return and reveal one revelation after another. However the afflictions are what removes the pollution - whether for individuals or for the group. So through the afflictions of these important ones, it is continually removed from the whole entire creation, such that the world approaches perfection - one level after another.

Shenei Luchot HaBerit, Torah Shebikhtav, Introduction

Shenei Luchot HaBerit, Torah Shebikhtav, Introduction:14

The Shelah presents Torah, Israel, and the structure of creation as interwoven within a kabbalistic scheme, emphasizing the spiritual meaning of mitzvot and the sanctity of Jewish life. It is a major Acharonim source for themes that resonate with Rav Kook's integrated vision of holiness.

Shenei Luchot HaBerit, Aseret HaDibrot, Introduction

The Shelah's treatment of the Ten Commandments connects revealed Torah, inner spiritual intention, and the repair of the person and world. This provides a useful bridge between earlier kabbalistic theology and Rav Kook's ethical-spiritual interpretation of Torah.

Netzach Yisrael 11

Netzach Yisrael 11:1

This chapter develops the relationship between exile, the national structure of Israel, and the necessity of redemption. It is particularly useful for comparing Maharal's national metaphysics with Rav Kook's Orot on Israel's rebirth.

Derekh Hashem, Part One 2:1

Derekh Hashem, Part One, On Mankind 2:1

Ramchal explains the purpose of creation and humanity's role in attaining perfection and attachment to God. This is one of the clearest Ramchal foundations for comparison with Rav Kook's teleological account of history, teshuvah, and spiritual development.

The human specie changed: And among that which one must also know is that the nature of the human specie that we see and distinguish now is not like at first. Rather there was a great change in him, and that is the matter of the sin of the first man (Adam) - as through it, man and the world were changed from what they were at the beginning. And there are indeed many components of this change and its outgrowths, and we will write about them in the continuation with God's help (Part 2, On Israel and the Nations 2). And it comes out that discussion about the human specie and distinguishing its properties [needs to be] doubled. For he and his properties before the sin will be discussed, as will he and his properties from the aspect of [the situation] after the sin - as we shall still elucidate, with God's help (Below, Paragraph 8). Behold that at the time of his formation, the first man was completely in the situation that we have mentioned until now. This means that he was surely joined from the two opposite parts that we mentioned - which are the soul and the body. And there were the two [possibilities] in the world - the good and the evil, and he stood between them evenly, to cleave to the one of them that he would want. And it was surely fitting for him to choose the good, that his soul should win over his body and his spirit over his materiality; and then he would have been perfected immediately and stayed in his perfection forever. The effects of the soul on the body: And you need to know that even thought we don't feel any effect of the soul on the body except for life and awareness, behold that among its axioms is that it purifies the actual body and its material, and it raises it up - one lift after [another] - with regard to its becoming fit to accompany it in the pleasure [of] perfection. And in truth, the first man would have reached this thing if he had not sinned - his soul would have purified his body, one purification after [another], until it would have been purified [with] the necessary and established measure for everlasting delight. The outgrowths of the sin of the first man: But once he sinned, a great change happened to things. And that is that at first there were surely sufficient deficiencies in the creation that the first man would be in the equal condition that we mentioned, so there would be room for him to earn perfections through the 'effort of his [own] hands.' With his sin, however, deficiencies were added; and they grew in the essence of man and in all of the entire creation. Moreover the redress became more difficult than before. The explanation of this is that surely at the beginning it was easy for [man] to go away from the deficiency planted in him and to acquire perfection. For the Supreme Wisdom set up the things like this according to the traits of good and fairness. And since man was not the cause of the evil and the deficiency within him - but it was rather planted in him in his creation - when he removed himself from the evil and turned to the good, he was surely immediately able to go away from deficiency and acquire perfection. However with his sin - since it was through him that perfection became more hidden than it was and the deficiencies grew, and he was the one that caused evil to himself - it would no longer be as easy for him to return and to go away from deficiency and acquire perfection as it was at the time that he was not the cause of his deficiency, but was rather [just] created like that from his beginning, as I have written. All the more so [would it be harder], as the striving required of him now to reach perfection would perforce be doubled: For he would first need that man and the world return to the condition that existed at the beginning before the sin; and then afterwards to rise above that condition to a condition of perfection to which it was fit for man to rise.

Da'at Tevunot 169

Ramchal analyzes the stages and purposes of redemption, including the concealment and revelation of divine governance. It is directly relevant to comparing Ramchal's redemptive metaphysics with Rav Kook's writings on national revival.

Nefesh HaChayim, Gate IV 1

Nefesh HaChayim, Gate IV 1:1

The Gra's disciple Rabbi Chaim of Volozhin articulates Torah study as the central channel of the world's spiritual maintenance and the human vocation. This is a key bridge to Rav Kook's theology of Torah, while reflecting the Gra's school more directly than a generic citation to the Gra would.

Additionally, I desired to include the following in the range of the book’s contents: 1. the tremendous obligation of involvement with Torah that’s incumbent upon each person of Israel day and night, and 2. to expand a bit in words about the greatness of: a. the Torah’s splendorous honor and high degree; and of b. the righteous person who is involved with and attends deeply to it [fem.], the Torah of compassion being on his tongue so as to gratify his Former and Creator (blessed be His name); and of c. the person of knowledge who expends effort to support it [fem.], and nourish it [fem.] and to reinforce its [fem.] condition, even after so long for Israel, during which the involvement with the holy Torah was denigrated in each successive generation. And lo, now, in these generations, due to our many sins, it has fallen very far. It is cast in the hidden recesses of the lowest levels (may the Merciful save us), as we see now for the majority of our nation, as a result of the great difficulty of bearing the burden of earning a living, may God-YHV”H have mercy. And also some of those who desire to come close to God-Elohi”m, they [emphatic] chose for themselves to make their steady practice, the core of their studies, books that cultivate awe/fear and teach ethical guidance all their days, without making a steady practice—the core of their involvement—with our holy Torah, in scripture and myriad laws. And in their entire lives they have not yet seen the sources of light in the heavens, and the light of Torah has not touched upon them (may God forgive them, for their intention is towards heaven), but this is not the path by which the light of Torah will dwell within them.

This section develops the human soul's relation to the divine and the spiritual consequences of attachment and action. It supplies a major Lithuanian source for comparing Rav Kook's anthropology and doctrine of holiness with the Gra's conceptual legacy.

Lest he go completely astray, His (blessed be He) will issued a judgment that they shouldn’t be cut off (heaven forefend) completely in all the ten aspects of the Neffesh. Only the nine lower aspects, from her Wisdom and down they are cut off. However the uppermost aspect, the secret of her crown [*A] is not cut off; that from the perspective of her attachment and connection with the aspect of the Ruakh (as we described above) [*B] it [fem.] is judged to be aspect of Ruakh for which there is no cutting off, as we will learn later. And this comes from supernal compassion (blessed is He), that via the aspect of Ruakh, that is via heartfelt verbal confession (which is the aspect of Ruakh, as we described above), the nine aspects of the Neffesh will rise to connect all of them with the aspect of Ruakh as before. Annotation A: That is to say, even if our souls-Neffesh are mired (heaven forefend) in evil desires (may the Merciful save us), even so His will (blessed be His name) established to elevate their soul-Neffesh via the aspect of His soul-Ruakh (blessed be His name), as in the context that is written (Yeshayahu 59:21): “And as for Me, this is My covenant with them, says God-YHV”H: My spirit-Ruakh that is upon thee… shall not depart…”, and as in the context of the Exodus from Egypt (Sh’mote 20:2), and this is “and I am God-YHV”H your God-Elohi”m who took you out of the land of Egypt”. And it’s known in the Zohar, that I-Ah-no-khee is the aspect of the crown. This is the commentary of the sages (OBM) (Shabbat 105a): “The word ‘I-Ah-no-khee’ is a nootrikone that means ‘I, Myself, wrote this and gave it to you …’ [and another is] ‘beautiful pronouncement’.” And they are the two aspects of Neffesh and Ruakh, and the wise will understand. Annotation B: That is to say that the inner will that crowns a Neffesh in Israel from the perspective of fear/awe -yir’ah is never, ever interrupted. And refer to the RaMBa”M at the end of chapter 2 relating to the ruling in a divorce issued under duress: “…until he says ‘I desire’, for the divorce is deemed legal if the law allows that he can be forced to grant the divorce.” And there they explained the reason that he is not considered “compelled”: his true will is to perform all the commandments, but his evil inclination dominated him. Since he was beaten until his evil inclination weakened and he then said “I desire [to divorce her]”, he divorced by his own will. Refer there for the holy one’s phrasing.

Even Sheleimah 1:1

The Gra's attributed ethical compilation begins its treatment of human perfection, the correction of character, and the purpose of Torah and mitzvot. It is relevant for tracing direct Gra-associated themes that later appear in Rav Kook's discussions of character, Torah, and redemption.

Sha'arei Kedusha, Part 3 7

Sha'arei Kedusha, Part 3 7:5

Rabbi Chaim Vital describes the structure of holiness, the soul, and the work of spiritual elevation in a framework that shaped later kabbalistic and Lithuanian thought. It is relevant background for comparing Rav Kook's language of inner holiness with the Gra's and Ramchal's traditions.

Now, the choicest of all paths is what we wrote about above, citing Tanna d’Bei Eliyahu, who is remembered for good. This is the path that the ancient Chassidim and hermits followed. Namely, one should return to HaShem-יהו״ה, blessed is He, with a very great repentance-Teshuvah over everything that he ruined. Afterwards, he should perfect his soul through fulfilling the positive commandments and should have the utmost devotional intent (Kavanah) in his prayers. Moreover, he should study Torah for its own sake (Lishmah), doing so with zeal and like an ox to the yoke, to the point that his strength is weakened. Moreover, he should minimize his pleasures, such as only eating and drinking enough to maintain his health. He should rise from his bed at midnight or slightly earlier, and also distance himself from any unbecoming character traits. Likewise, he should separate himself from others, so as to not engage in mundane matters such as idle chatter. Subsequently, he should work to purify his body, regularly immersing himself in the ritual bath (Mikvah). Afterwards, he should occasionally go into seclusion, and at such times, contemplate specifically on matters that bring to fear of HaShem-יהו״ה, blessed is He. He should set HaShem-יהו״ה before his eyes constantly, and should take care to ensure that his thoughts remain entirely empty of all of vanities of this lowly world. Instead, he should adhere to love of HaShem-יהו״ה, blessed is He, with great yearning and desire. Through this, he can possibly merit the Holy Spirit (Ru’ach HaKodesh) and be Divinely inspired in one of the following ways. The first is that he may draw a supernal light upon himself from the upper root of his soul, which becomes revealed to him, as mentioned in the fifth gate. This is the complete manifestation of the Holy Spirit (Ru’ach HaKodesh) of Divine inspiration. The second is through engaging in Torah study or fulfilling a particular mitzvah, about which our sages, of blessed memory, explained, “Whoever fulfills one commandment, acquires one advocate for himself,” meaning that an angel is formed by it, in the most literal sense. However, this is on condition that he fulfills it constantly and does so with much devotional intent (Kavanah), being careful to fulfill it meticulously according to Torah law (Halachah). In such a case, the angel that was formed through the mitzvah or the Torah study can come and be revealed to him. This explains the matter found in various holy books about angels who are revealed to the righteous and are called Maggidim (talkers). The caveat to this, is that if the mitzvah was not fulfilled meticulously, precisely according to its laws (Halachah), the Maggid angel will have a mixture of good and evil, truth and false. The third is that through conducting himself in the above-mentioned path of great piety (Chassidut), Eliyahu the prophet, who is remembered for good, will be revealed to him. To the extent of the growth and development of his piety (Chassidut) will be the extent and growth of the frequency and constancy of his revelation. The fourth, and the greatest of them all, is when he merits that the soul of one of the early righteous-Tzaddikim comes to be revealed to him. As known, this Tzaddik could possibly be of the same root as his soul, or even if he is from another root, he becomes revealed to him because he fulfilled a particular mitzvah in a perfected manner, similar to how this Tzaddik fulfilled it. Whoever merits this level will grasp in a wondrous manner, in that deep wisdom and hidden secrets of Torah will be made known to him to the point of wondrousness. All this is according to his deeds.

Kalach Pitchei Chokhmah 1

Kalach Pitchei Chokhmah 1:3

Ramchal lays out the methodological architecture of his kabbalistic system and the relation of divine emanation, concealment, and repair. It is useful as a technical background source for themes later expressed by Rav Kook in more existential and historical language.

The oneness of Eyn Sof – He who has “No End”, blessed be He – lies in the fact that only His Will exists, and no other will exists except through Him. Therefore He alone is in control and not any other will. The entire structure is built on this foundation. God’s supreme unity is the foundation of faith and the root of wisdom. Accordingly, this is what must be explained first. For the entire Wisdom of Truth (חכמת האמת, Chochmat HaEmet, the Kabbalah) comes only to demonstrate the truth of Faith (אמונה, Emunah). It comes to explain how all the created realms and beings and everything that happens in the universe all emerge from the Supreme Will (הרצון העליון, HaRatzon HaElyon). It shows how everything is governed in the right way by the One God, blessed be He, to bring the entire cycle of creation to complete perfection in the end. The component details of this wisdom provide detailed understanding of all the laws and processes by which the universe is governed. Thus the first axiom of this wisdom is that everything we see, including all created beings and all that occurs within time, is under only One Master, blessed be He. God alone makes and does all this, and He governs everything. The purpose of this wisdom is to explain the ways in which He acts to make and govern the creation. If so, the oneness of God is what we must explain first, since this is the very foundation of the creation, as will be explained. If we can understand this subject, we will have an understanding of the foundation of the creation, its root and purpose. Accordingly, it is certainly proper to explain this first.

The passage states that the principles of Jewish law were received from Moses, and that the Sages understood that the oral tradition is alluded to in the written Torah through various types of hints, which they knew how to interpret; it was known among them that it is proper to labor in discovering the places where oral Torah is hinted at in the written Torah, and therefore each scholar should seek out these hints as seems most fitting, though they do not claim these interpretations represent the plain meaning of the text but rather an additional layer of intentional allusion by the Author of Torah beyond the literal explanation, sometimes calling this an asmachta.

Peri Tzadik, Vayikra 7:3

Peri Tzadik, Vayikra 7:3

The passage explains that the difference in order between the Zohar and the Babylonian Talmud reflects two levels of divine governance: the Zohar's approach corresponds to the hidden, transcendent level (represented by "it arose in thought") that can only be grasped through the oral Torah, whose root is Rabbi Akiva and his colleagues; the Talmud's approach corresponds to the revealed level of divine governance clothed within the seemingly mundane details of worldly matters (such as laws of commerce and interpersonal dealings), where all the secrets of divine providence are actually concealed and which will ultimately be revealed to show that all movement in the world—even physical matters—contains holy governance.

Adir Bamarom, Beur Idra Rabba 95a

Adir Bamarom, Beur Idra Rabba 95a

The passage states that the names of Atika Stimai are concealed and not explicitly explained in Torah except in one place, and that understanding this matter is among the highest teachings in this wisdom, rooted in the secrets of tzimtzum and the extension of the line from the infinite in its proper manner; it further explains that all of Torah is interpreted on a level entirely above physicality, and that two primordial things—tzimtzum and the extension of the line—are the foundation of all existence and divine governance, with these concepts being embodied in the Patriarchs and their descendants.

Orot, Lights from Darkness, Land of Israel 1:2

Rav Kook presents the holiness of Israel as an objective, national-spiritual reality and explains the distinctive relationship between Torah, the people of Israel, and the Land. This is a central locus for themes often compared with the Maharal and the Shelah concerning Israel's unique metaphysical identity.

Rav Kook develops the redemptive meaning of Jewish national revival and the process by which spiritual life is renewed through the return to the Land. It is especially useful for tracing continuities with Maharal's account of redemption and the Gra's messianic activism.

Orot, The Process of Ideals in Israel

Orot, The Process of Ideals in Israel, The Godly and the National Ideal in the Individual

This essay describes the historical development of divine ideals within Israel and the interaction of Torah, nationhood, and universal purpose. It provides a broad conceptual framework for comparing Rav Kook's historical philosophy with the Maharal and Ramchal.

recovered from “Orot HaTeshuvah 5:1

Orot HaTeshuvah, Orot HaTeshuvah

Orot HaTeshuvah, Chapter 5:1

Rav Kook distinguishes individual and collective dimensions of repentance and portrays teshuvah as a cosmic process of returning all existence to its divine source. The metaphysical and teleological language makes this a strong comparison point with Ramchal's and the Gra's accounts of repair and perfection.

Teshuva of Nature, Faith, and Intellect We find teshuva in three domains: a) teshuva of nature, b) teshuva of faith, and c) teshuva of intellect Natural teshuva has two aspects: that of the physical nature and that of the spiritual nature. "Physical" encompasses all of the sins against natural statutes, against ethics, and against the Torah (which are connected to natural statutes). For any evil act will result in affliction and pain, and a person suffers in specific and general ways from this. And after it becomes clear to someone that they themself are guilty and deserving of their life's diminishment as a result of their evil actions, then one focuses on improving the situation, to return to the laws of life and to obey the laws of nature, ethics and Torah, so that one may return and live and have life, with all its freshness, return to them. Granted, modern medical practice deals with this a lot, but apparently this great work has not yet been completely perfected, and the correct solution to all the difficulties of physical teshuva has not yet been found, to the extent that it is possible during a person's lifetime to restore to them a person all that was lost due to sins that destroy the body and its capabilities. It is therefore apparent that this aspect of teshuva depends heavily on the other ones: spiritual-natural, religious and intellectual. More internal is the natural soulful & spiritual teshuva. This is the intrinsic ethical nature (lit. "ethics of the kidneys," Cf. Ps 16:7, TB Ber. 61a). It is the natural human spiritual tendency to walk a straight path, but when one strays and falls to sin, so long as one's soul has not been completely corrupted, then this sense of honesty causes heartache and breakdown from the pain, and one acts quickly to repent and repair the distortion so that one can feel that their sin has been erased. This part of teshuva is very complicated and is dependent on many internal and external factors. There are many pitfalls that one must be on guard from, but it remains one of the foundations on which the essence of teshuva rests. After natural teshuva comes that of faith. This is sourced in the religious tradition, which is greatly involved in teshuva. The Torah guarantees pardon to those who return from sin; the sins of the individual and the community are erased through teshuva. The Prophets are filled with sublime words on the matter of teshuva, just as the Torah's rebukes are established on the teshuva of faith. Its depths contain uncountable details, and even their general foundations require much explanation. (7) Teshuvah of the Intellect occurs when Teshuvah of Nature and Teshuvah of Faith have already been acquired, such that one has already arrived to a higher level. On this level, the cause of Teshuvah is not physical, spiritual, or ethical suffering and it is not simply the influence of what is received from tradition, whether that be fear of punishment or the ethical impression of every law and instruction which comes from tradition. Rather, the cause of this Teshuvah is clear-minded recognition that emerges from a comprehensive view of life and of the world that emerges after the role of Natural Teshuva and Faith-Teshuvah have left a strong impression. This Teshuvah which encompasses the earlier stages is filled with Endless Light and comes to transform all of the sins into merits. From every mistake, this Teshuvah brings to light lofty lessons and from every crushing humiliation wondrous ascents. This is the Teshuvah towards which all eyes are lifted. This is the Teshuvah which must come and which in the end will come.

Orot HaKodesh I:1:1

Orot HaKodesh 1:1:1

Rav Kook opens with a vision of holiness as the integrating force of spiritual and worldly life. The passage is a representative entry point for comparing his synthesis of mysticism, ethics, and metaphysics with the Shelah and Ramchal.

Orot HaKodesh III:1:1

Orot HaKodesh 3:1:1

This opening section of the third volume addresses the spiritual significance of creativity and inner life within a divinely ordered world. It can illuminate Rav Kook's distinctive transformation of kabbalistic categories into a philosophy of religious personality and culture.

Ein Aya, Shabbat 4:3

Ein Aya, Shabbat 4:3

When particular examples throughout material and spiritual reality are collected under a comprehensive logical principle, that principle itself has analogues in other aspects of existence, and when these are synthesized into an intellectual form, an elevated logic emerges; however, one must also apply rational judgment to determine which connection to reality best suits the state of our ideas, actions, and life in order to draw forth a fitting and beneficial intellectual consequence.

Ein Aya, Shabbat 2:298

Ein Aya, Shabbat 2:298

In all ways of life, the Creator has prepared for each person spiritual and material qualities suited to their condition; those of elevated status have precise and defined boundaries to reach their needed truths, while those whose intellect cannot penetrate the depths of these truths still have broad paths in revealed truths where they can resolve their doubts and walk the straight way through wide paths that reflect the essence of the precise, lengthy ways of the skilled and wise-hearted, without needing to enter deep investigations, since the light of truth itself is revealed to all who have eyes to see.
