Playing Soccer on Shabbat

Jewish legal sources address whether soccer and ball sports are permitted on Shabbat, examining the concepts of muktzeh (objects prohibited from handling), melacha (forbidden creative work), and weekday activities. The sources span classical rabbinic discussions through contemporary halakhic rulings.

What the sources say

The Gemara in Eruvin 104a establishes the foundational concern underlying ball-play on Shabbat: women who played with nuts by rolling them were prohibited to do so not because of sound production but because players might come to level out small holes in the ground — an act of building — demonstrating that the rabbis saw a structural link between ordinary games played on uneven surfaces and the melacha of building.

Building on this concern, Shulchan Arukh, Orach Chayim 308:45 rules that playing with a ball on Shabbat and Yom Tov is forbidden, while the Rema notes that some permit it and that the popular custom has been to be lenient.

Shulchan Arukh HaRav, Orach Chayim 308:83 rules that playing with a ball on Shabbat is prohibited because the ball lacks the status of a proper utensil and is therefore muktzeh, though he acknowledges that earlier custom was to permit playing with it in a private domain and that those who were lenient had authorities to rely upon.

Even where earlier authorities were lenient about simple ball-play, Peninei Halakhah, Shabbat 24:9 rules that organized sports such as soccer and basketball are categorically forbidden on Shabbat as uvdin de-chol — weekday activities — and that the balls used in such sports are moreover muktzeh, so that playing with them even at home or in a private yard is not permitted.

Eruvin 104a

Eruvin 104a:20

The Gemara explains that women are prohibited from playing with nuts or apples on Shabbat not because of the sound produced, but rather because in leveling holes that interfere with their game they might come to perform the prohibited melacha of building.

The Gemara asks: However, with regard to that which Rav Yehuda said that Rav said: Women who play with nuts by rolling them on the ground until they collide with each other, it is prohibited for them to do so; what is the reason for this prohibition? Is it not because knocking nuts together produces a sound, and any production of a sound is prohibited? The Gemara rejects this contention: No, it is prohibited because perhaps they will come to level the holes. As small holes in the ground will interfere with their game, they might level them out and seal them up on Shabbat, which is prohibited as building. For if you do not say that this is the reason, there is a difficulty with that which Rav Yehuda said: Women who play with apples, this is prohibited, as what production of a sound is involved there? Apples do not produce a sound when they collide with each other. Rather, the reason is that they will perhaps come to level holes, and the same reasoning applies to nuts.

Peninei Halakhah, Shabbat 24:9

Peninei Halakhah, Shabbat 24:9

Soccer, basketball, baseball, and football are prohibited on Shabbat for children and adults alike because they are weekday activities treated as significant pursuits with formal rules; watching such games is also forbidden, as is playing with their balls even at home due to muktzeh status and weekday-activity concerns, and the same prohibitions apply to tennis.

Children may not play soccer, football, baseball, or basketball on Shabbat. Since adults make a big deal out of these games and they have intricate rules and procedures, they are prohibited, as they are considered a prohibited weekday activity. Besides, sometimes these games involve additional prohibited activities, such as preparing the field for a game, driving to the field, registering for the game, and buying and selling tickets or team merchandise. It is also prohibited to watch a soccer or basketball game on Shabbat, because this is a weekday activity. It is even prohibited to play with the balls associated with these sports at home or in a yard, because they are muktzeh and because it is a weekday activity. For the same reasons, all of the above applies to tennis as well.
