Awakening From Below in Jewish Spirituality

These sources explore the concept of human initiative and effort as a spiritual force that precedes and enables divine response. They examine how intentional human action, repentance, and striving create the conditions for higher spiritual attainment and divine revelation.

What the sources say

The central theme running through these sources is that human initiative from below — itaruta dilesata — is what secures and stabilizes a spiritual attainment, as Michtav MeEliyahu (Rav Dessler) explains that whatever a person earns through his own arousal from below becomes truly his own and cannot be taken from him, unlike an awakening that comes purely from above.

Michtav MeEliyahu (Rav Dessler) develops this further, distinguishing an ascent that begins with itaruta dilelah, which must later be repurchased through trial, from an ascent built from itaruta dilesata, where the person first exerts himself and is given the capacity to acquire a great level through his own effort, though ultimately even this is bound up with great mercy.

Likkutei Torah, Re'eh locates this dynamic in the calendar itself, teaching that the revelation of the thirteen attributes of mercy in Elul specifically follows the arousal of teshuvah from below, so that only after itaruta dilesata does itaruta dilelah come, citing the Zohar's reading of the pasuk about a person setting his heart to seek G-d.

Shem MiShmuel, Mishpatim applies the same structure to the song at the sea and to the mitzvah of shekalim, describing both as itaruta dilesata that follows and responds to an itaruta dilelah already attained through the exalted levels revealed at the sea.

Mesillat Yesharim 26:3 frames the same relationship in terms of holiness: what lies within a person's own power is the initial exertion and pursuit of true knowledge, while the completion of holiness remains a gift from Above, so that man sanctifies himself only a little and is then sanctified greatly, echoing the pairing of human effort with the greater response it draws.

Chochma uMusar 1 p. 193 likewise invokes itaruta dilesata, praying that this arousal from below will bring life to the world and cause Torah to go forth from Zion, reinforcing that human initiative is conceived as the necessary spark that precedes and draws down the fuller flow from above.

Megillah 6b

Megillah 6b:3

Rabbi Yitzchak’s teaching that one must exert oneself in a place of Torah underscores that spiritual attainment requires determined human initiative rather than passive expectation.

§ Rabbi Yitzḥak said in the style of a previous passage: If a person says to you: I have labored and not found success, do not believe him. Similarly, if he says to you: I have not labored but nevertheless I have found success, do not believe him. If, however, he says to you: I have labored and I have found success, believe him. The Gemara comments: This applies only to matters of Torah, as success with respect to Torah study is in accordance with the toil and effort invested. But with regard to success in business, it all depends upon assistance from Heaven, as there is no correlation between success and effort. And even with regard to matters of Torah, we said this only with regard to sharpening one’s understanding of Torah, as the more one labors, the deeper the understanding of the material he achieves. However, to preserve what one has learned, it is dependent upon assistance from Heaven. Not everyone achieves this, even with much effort.

Shabbat 88a

Shabbat 88a:7

Israel’s declaration “we will do and we will hear” is praised as an act of wholehearted initiative and trust, preceding intellectual comprehension and enabling the covenantal revelation at Sinai.

Rabbi Simai taught: When Israel accorded precedence to the declaration “We will do” over the declaration “We will hear,” 600,000 ministering angels came and tied two crowns to each and every member of the Jewish people, one corresponding to “We will do” and one corresponding to “We will hear.” And when the people sinned with the Golden Calf, 1,200,000 angels of destruction descended and removed them from the people, as it is stated in the wake of the sin of the Golden Calf: “And the children of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments from Mount Horeb onward” (Exodus 33:6). Rabbi Ḥama, son of Rabbi Ḥanina, said: At Horeb they put on their ornaments, and at Horeb they removed them. The source for this is: At Horeb they put them on, as we have said; at Horeb they removed them, as it is written: “And the children of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments from Mount Horeb.” Rabbi Yoḥanan said: And Moses merited all of these crowns and took them. What is the source for this? Because juxtaposed to this verse, it is stated: “And Moses would take the tent [ohel]” (Exodus 33:7). The word ohel is interpreted homiletically as an allusion to an aura or illumination [hila]. Reish Lakish said: In the future, the Holy One, Blessed be He, will return them to us, as it is stated: “And the ransomed of the Lord shall return, and come with singing unto Zion, and everlasting joy shall be upon their heads” (Isaiah 35:10). The joy that they once had will once again be upon their heads. Rabbi Elazar said: When the Jewish people accorded precedence to the declaration “We will do” over “We will hear,” a Divine Voice emerged and said to them: Who revealed to my children this secret that the ministering angels use? As it is written: “Bless the Lord, you angels of His, you mighty in strength, that fulfill His word, hearkening unto the voice of His word” (Psalms 103:20). At first, the angels fulfill His word, and then afterward they hearken. Rabbi Ḥama, son of Rabbi Ḥanina, said: What is the meaning of that which is written: “As an apple tree among the trees of the wood, so is my beloved among the sons. Under its shadow I delighted to sit and its fruit was sweet to my taste” (Song of Songs 2:3)? Why were the Jewish people likened to an apple tree? It is to tell you that just as this apple tree, its fruit grows before its leaves, so too, the Jewish people accorded precedence to “We will do” over “We will hear.” The Gemara relates that a heretic saw that Rava was immersed in studying halakha, and his fingers were beneath his leg and he was squeezing them, and his fingers were spurting blood. Rava did not notice that he was bleeding because he was engrossed in study. The heretic said to Rava: You impulsive nation, who accorded precedence to your mouths over your ears. You still bear your impulsiveness, as you act without thinking. You should listen first. Then, if you are capable of fulfilling the commands, accept them. And if not, do not accept them. He said to him: About us,

Sotah 11a

Sotah 11a:3

The midrashic reading of “with the bricks and with the mortar” connects Israel’s redemption to the merit of the righteous women, whose courageous initiative sustained Jewish continuity in Egypt.

§ The mishna teaches: And the same is so with regard to the reward for good deeds. Miriam waited for the baby Moses for one hour at the shore of the Nile; therefore, the Jewish people delayed their travels in the desert for seven days to wait for her when she was smitten with leprosy. The Gemara asks: Are these matters comparable? There, Miriam waited one hour, while here, the Jewish people waited for her for seven days. Abaye said: Say this with a slight change: And with regard to the repaying of good it is not so, as a person is not rewarded precisely measure for measure, as the reward may be greater than the good deed. Rava said to him: But the tanna taught in the mishna: And the same is so with regard to the reward of good deeds. Rather, Rava said: This is what the mishna is teaching: And the same is so with regard to the reward of good deeds. It is rewarded with the same measure, i.e., a person is rewarded in the same manner as the good deed, but the measure of good is always greater than the measure of punishment. Therefore, Miriam was rewarded in the same manner as, but in a greater measure than, her deed. With regard to Miriam’s deed the verse states: “And his sister stood afar off, to know what would be done to him” (Exodus 2:4). Rabbi Yitzḥak says: This entire verse is stated in reference to the Divine Presence, i.e., each phrase alludes to the Divine Presence watching over Moses. “And his sister stood”; as it is written: “And the Lord came, and stood” (I Samuel 3:10). “His sister”; as it is written: “Say to wisdom: You are my sister” (Proverbs 7:4). “Afar off”; as it is written: “From afar the Lord appeared to me” (Jeremiah 31:2). “To know”; as it is written: “For the Lord is a God of knowledge” (I Samuel 2:3). “What”; as it is written: “What does the Lord God require of you” (Deuteronomy 10:12). “Would be done”; as it is written: “For the Lord God will do nothing” (Amos 3:7). “To him”; as it is written: “And the Lord said to him: Peace be with you” (Judges 6:23).

Eruvin 13b

Eruvin 13b:13

Chachmei Bavel teach that humility and patience bring elevation and success, while self-aggrandizement and forcing the moment lead to the opposite; since human creation was ultimately judged less favorable than non-creation, a person should examine and correct his actions, including those he plans to undertake.

This is to teach you that anyone who humbles himself, the Holy One, Blessed be He, exalts him, and anyone who exalts himself, the Holy One, Blessed be He, humbles him. Anyone who seeks greatness, greatness flees from him, and, conversely, anyone who flees from greatness, greatness seeks him. And anyone who attempts to force the moment and expends great effort to achieve an objective precisely when he desires to do so, the moment forces him too, and he is unsuccessful. And conversely, anyone who is patient and yields to the moment, the moment stands by his side, and he will ultimately be successful. The Sages taught the following baraita: For two and a half years, Beit Shammai and Beit Hillel disagreed. These say: It would have been preferable had man not been created than to have been created. And those said: It is preferable for man to have been created than had he not been created. Ultimately, they were counted and concluded: It would have been preferable had man not been created than to have been created. However, now that he has been created, he should examine his actions that he has performed and seek to correct them. And some say: He should scrutinize his planned actions and evaluate whether or not and in what manner those actions should be performed, so that he will not sin.

Zevachim 2a

Zevachim 2a:7

Chachmei Bavel state that offerings slaughtered with improper intent remain sanctified and their remaining rites must not be performed improperly, since one deviation does not justify deviating throughout the rest of the sacrificial process.

The Gemara responds: By adding this word, the mishna teaches us that the only deficiency with regard to these offerings is that they did not satisfy the obligation of the owner, but they retain their sanctity, and it is still prohibited to deviate from the protocol of their sacrificial process, i.e., the remaining rites must be performed with proper intent. And this halakha is in accordance with the statement of Rava, as Rava says: With regard to a burnt offering that one slaughtered not for its sake, it is still prohibited to sprinkle its blood on the altar not for its sake. The Gemara adds: If you wish, propose a logical argument to support this statement, and if you wish, cite a verse as proof. The Gemara elaborates: If you wish, propose a logical argument: Just because one deviated from protocol in its sacrifice once, i.e., in its slaughter, could it be that he should continue to deviate from protocol in all the rest of the sacrificial rites? One deviation does not justify additional deviations.

Keritot 24a

Keritot 24a:2

Chachmei Bavel explain that designating two provisional guilt offerings reveals the person's pangs of conscience and indicates wholehearted consecration, while Rabbi Yoḥanan rules that the extra offering should graze until blemished, then be sold for communal gift offerings; unlike a meal offering of jealousy, which clarifies whether a sin occurred, a provisional guilt offering is intended for atonement.

What is the reason that Rabbi Meir agrees in such a case? Rabbi Meir disagrees with the Rabbis in a case where one brings a provisional guilt offering and later discovers with certainty that he did not sin, only because Rabbi Meir holds that the one consecrating the animal did not initially reveal that his heart was striking him with pangs of conscience. But here, in a case where he set aside two animals as provisional guilt offerings, since he was required to designate only one animal, what is the reason that he designated two? Evidently, the reason is that he thought: If one of the animals is lost, I will achieve atonement with the other one. And as he revealed by this scrupulous behavior that his heart was striking him with pangs of conscience, since that was so, he wholeheartedly resolved to consecrate the animal. Rabbi Yoḥanan says: That provisional guilt offering shall graze until it becomes blemished; and then it shall be sold, and the money received for it shall be allocated for communal gift offerings. The Gemara raises a difficulty: But according to Rabbi Yoḥanan, let us compare that case to a meal offering of jealousy, as claimed by Rabbi Elazar. The Gemara explains that Rabbi Yoḥanan would claim that the cases are not similar: A meal offering of jealousy does not come for atonement, but rather to clarify the sin of the sota. Since it has been clarified that she did not sin, the meal offering becomes non-sacred. But with regard to a provisional guilt offering, which comes for atonement, one must explain as follows: Since his heart strikes him with pangs of conscience, he wholeheartedly resolves to consecrate the animal, and therefore it remains sacred.

Pesachim 112b

Pesachim 112b:16

Chachmei Bavel recount that Agrat, daughter of Maḥalat, acknowledged the heavenly protection of Rabbi Ḥanina ben Dosa and Abaye, and each decreed that she not pass through inhabited areas, though Rabbi Ḥanina granted her Shabbat and Tuesday nights.

The Gemara states: Initially, these demons were present every day. Once Agrat, daughter of Maḥalat, met Rabbi Ḥanina ben Dosa and said to him: Had they not announced about you in the Heavens: Be careful of Ḥanina and his Torah, I would have placed you in danger. He said to her: If I am considered important in Heaven, I decree upon you that you should never travel through inhabited places. She said to him: I beg you, leave me a little space. He left for her Shabbat nights and Tuesday nights. And furthermore, once Agrat, daughter of Maḥalat met Abaye and said to him: Had they not announced about you in the Heavens: Be careful of Naḥmani, Abaye, and his Torah, I would have placed you in danger. He said to her: If I am considered important in Heaven, I decree upon you that you should never pass through inhabited places. The Gemara asks: But we see that, notwithstanding these anecdotes, demons do pass through inhabited areas. The Sages say in explanation: These demons

Duties of the Heart, Fourth Treatise on Trust 4:1-4

Rabbeinu Bachya explains how human effort and reliance on God coexist: one must undertake appropriate means while recognizing that results remain dependent on divine providence.

The concerns for which the believer is obligated to put his trust in G-d are of two categories. (1) matters of this world, and (2), matters of Olam Haba (afterlife). And matters of this world subdivide to two divisions.

Mishneh Torah, Repentance 5:1-2

Maimonides establishes human free choice and responsibility: every person can become righteous or wicked. This agency is the philosophical foundation for avodah initiated from below.

Nefesh HaChayim, Gate IV 11

Nefesh HaChayim, Gate IV 11:6

Rav Chaim Volozhiner describes Torah study and human spiritual effort as drawing higher vitality into the world, articulating a systematic account of awakening from below.

And from the time when it unfolded and descended (so to speak) from the wellspring of its concealed source into this world—as they (OBM) stated: “Moshe came and brought it down to the earth”—the entire life force and sustenance of all the worlds is the result only of the vapors from our mouths and our intellectual efforts relative to it [fem.]. And the truth, without any doubt at all, is that if the entire world, from one end to the other, would be empty (heaven forefend) literally for even one moment from our involvement with and contemplation of the Torah, immediately all of the worlds would be destroyed, supernal and terrestrial, and would become emptiness and chaos (heaven forefend). And so too, the abundance of the light they receive, or its lack (heaven forefend), is totally only according to the context of and the degree of our involvement with it [fem.]. For that reason, we make the blessing upon it [fem.]: “and the life of the world did You plant among us”, per the matter of planting, that its planting is to make fruit so as to increase good. So too, if we hold fast onto the holy Torah with all of our power properly, we inherit everlasting lives, and draw from its concealed source above all the worlds expansions of holiness and blessing and great light in all the worlds. This is what is written in Mishlei Rabbata, parsha 2: “More than you guard any thing, safeguard your heart” (Mishlei 4:23), so that it should not flee from words of Torah. Why? “Because from it [come] the results of life”, to teach you that from words of Torah result life for the world.

Nefesh HaChayim, Gate I 12

Nefesh HaChayim, Gate I 12:1

The soul’s active attachment to God through Torah and mitzvot is presented as the human contribution that aligns and elevates the spiritual order.

And man’s soul-Neffesh, soul-Ruakh and soul-Neshama are unable to interconnect the worlds until they descend below into man’s body, as we discussed above in Chapter 10, for to rectify the World of Action it was absolutely necessary that they clothe themselves in the body in the World of Action. And we found this in several sources that discuss the three divisions of the soul we mentioned above. Regarding the matter of arousal in the worlds above via the quality of action, King Dovid (peace is upon him) said (Tehillim 33): “He who forms together their hearts/minds and understands the direction of all their actions....” According to the plain meaning it would have been appropriate to say “understands all their actions.” And he said “the direction of all their actions,” as if to say all the things that are relevant to their actions, to say that He who formed them (blessed be His name) is the One who knows and understands to where [the results of ] their actions reach and relate to in rectifying the worlds, or the opposite (heaven forefend). And he said: “for every action” and not “relative to every action”. It is as was stated (Iyyov 34): “For a man’s action will he be recompensed.” And it is as was explained above (in chapter 6, in the notes), that from the instant it enters into the purity of a man’s thoughts to perform a commandment, immediately its impression is made above, in its lofty root, to build and to plant a number of worlds and lofty powers, as is written (Yeshayahu 51): “And I will place my words in your mouth...” and “to plant the heavens...”. And as they (OBM) stated (at the end of tractate Berakhot): “Don’t read it as ‘your children’ but rather as ‘your builders’” as we mentioned above.

Sha'arei Kedusha, Part 3 7

Sha'arei Kedusha, Part 3 7:5

Rabbi Chaim Vital presents the disciplined preparation and ethical refinement required for spiritual attainment, portraying human purification as the condition for receiving higher holiness.

Now, the choicest of all paths is what we wrote about above, citing Tanna d’Bei Eliyahu, who is remembered for good. This is the path that the ancient Chassidim and hermits followed. Namely, one should return to HaShem-יהו״ה, blessed is He, with a very great repentance-Teshuvah over everything that he ruined. Afterwards, he should perfect his soul through fulfilling the positive commandments and should have the utmost devotional intent (Kavanah) in his prayers. Moreover, he should study Torah for its own sake (Lishmah), doing so with zeal and like an ox to the yoke, to the point that his strength is weakened. Moreover, he should minimize his pleasures, such as only eating and drinking enough to maintain his health. He should rise from his bed at midnight or slightly earlier, and also distance himself from any unbecoming character traits. Likewise, he should separate himself from others, so as to not engage in mundane matters such as idle chatter. Subsequently, he should work to purify his body, regularly immersing himself in the ritual bath (Mikvah). Afterwards, he should occasionally go into seclusion, and at such times, contemplate specifically on matters that bring to fear of HaShem-יהו״ה, blessed is He. He should set HaShem-יהו״ה before his eyes constantly, and should take care to ensure that his thoughts remain entirely empty of all of vanities of this lowly world. Instead, he should adhere to love of HaShem-יהו״ה, blessed is He, with great yearning and desire. Through this, he can possibly merit the Holy Spirit (Ru’ach HaKodesh) and be Divinely inspired in one of the following ways. Now, the path we have set forth is a straightforward path, being that one is not engaging in any oaths, nor is he attempting to force matters Above. Rather, they are attained solely through the power of good deeds and holiness. It thus is certain that if one follows this path, the pure and Holy Spirit of Ru’ach HaKodesh will rest upon him, without any admixture of good and evil whatsoever. However, this is not so if a person attempts to force matters Above, or seeks to make use of oaths or prayers and unifications (Yichudim), wherein if he even makes the slightest error, he can possibly be inviting external matters to become intermingled.

Mesillat Yesharim 26

Mesillat Yesharim 26:3

The final chapter describes holiness as the result of sustained human preparation and disciplined attachment to God, while emphasizing that ultimate holiness is granted from above.

However, it is impossible for a man to place himself in such a state. For it is beyond his ability. He is after all a physical creature, of flesh and blood. Thus I said that the end of Holiness is a gift. For that which is in man's ability to do is the initial exertion, pursuing true knowledge and continual thought on the sanctification of deed. But the end is that the Holy One, blessed be He, will guide him on this path he desires to follow and imbue His holiness upon him, and sanctify him. Then this matter will succeed and he will be able to achieve this clinging with the blessed G-d constantly. Therefore our sages said in the statement I brought: "a man sanctifies himself a little", which refers to that which a man can acquire through his own exertion. Then "he is sanctified much", which refers to the divine help which the Creator, blessed be He, aids him as I wrote.

Tanya 37

Tanya, Part I; Likkutei Amarim 37:1

The chapter teaches that practical mitzvot performed in this physical world effect the divine purpose of making a dwelling below, a classic Chabad formulation of elevation initiated through embodied action.

This culminating fulfillment of the Messianic Era and of the Resurrection of the Dead, which is the revelation of the light of the En Sof, blessed is He, in this material world, depends on our actions and service throughout the duration of the galut. For what causes the reward of a commandment is the commandment itself, because by virtue of performing it the person suffuses a flood of light of the En Sof, blessed is He, from above downward, to be clothed in the corporeality of the world in something that was previously under the dominion of the kelipat nogah, from which it had received its vitality. These are all those things that are [ritually] clean and permissible, wherewith the precept of action is performed, viz., parchment used in the tefillin, mezuzah, and Torah scroll, as taught by the Rabbis that nothing is fitting for a sacred purpose which is not clean and permissible for consumption; similarly an etrog which is not orlah;

Tanya 29

Tanya, Part I; Likkutei Amarim 29:20

The Alter Rebbe explains how a person must actively break through spiritual dullness and inner resistance; this strenuous human awakening prepares the self for divine service and illumination.

In this way he will help his divine soul to enlighten her eyes with the truth of the unity of the light of the En Sof with a perceptive vision and not merely by cognition alone, as it were, as is explained elsewhere that this is the core of the whole [Divine] service. And the explanation is that in truth there is no substance whatsoever in the sitra achara, wherefore it is compared to darkness which has no substance whatsoever and consequently is banished in the presence of light. Similarly the sitra achara which, although it possesses abundant vitality wherewith to animate all impure animals and the souls of the nations of the world, and also the animal soul of the Jew, as has been explained, nevertheless has no vitality of its own, G–d forbid, but [derives it] from the realm of holiness, as has been explained above. Therefore it is completely nullified in the presence of holiness, as darkness is nullified before physical light, except that in regard to the holiness of the divine soul in man, the Holy One, blessed is He, has given [the animal soul] permission and ability to raise itself against [the divine soul] in order that man should be challenged to overcome it and to humble it by means of the humility and submission of his spirit and his abhorring in himself that which is despicable. And “through the impulse from below comes an impulse from Above,” to fulfill what is written, “From there I will bring you down, says the L–rd,” namely, depriving it of its dominion and power and withdrawing from it the strength and authority which had been given it to rise up against the light of the holiness of the divine soul, whereupon it inevitably becomes nullified and is banished, just as darkness is nullified before physical light.

Michtav MeEliyahu (Rav Dessler)

The passage states that spiritual attainments preceded by a person’s own yirat shamayim have lasting possession, whereas illumination received from above without prior effort is granted temporarily and withdrawn to test whether the person internalized and can sustain its truth through personal avodah.

Michtav MeEliyahu (Rav Dessler)

The passage explains that spiritual ascent occurs either through initial divine inspiration followed by a trial in which the person reclaims and thereby acquires the level, or through personal effort that earns a much greater level than the effort itself would warrant, through great mercy.
