Discerning One's Spiritual Work and Purpose

Jewish sources address how to identify and work on one's spiritual tasks. Rather than seeking to diagnose whether one is a gilgul (reincarnated soul), the classical and hasidic teachings redirect focus to systematic self-examination, engagement with present struggles, and faithful practice of Torah and mitzvot as the path to spiritual repair and growth.

What the sources say

The sources on the sheet describe the mechanics and purpose of gilgul rather than any sign by which a person could recognize himself as one: the Yalkut Reuveni describes a soul recycled up to three times and purified in the river of fire, the Ramchal explains that parts of a soul not yet rectified in a previous body must return in a second or third body, and the Sulam on Zohar, Mishpatim 8 discusses how a soul rooted in Atzilut retains its stature even when it descends through gilgul into a lower world.

The Midrash Shmuel on Avot 4:20 frames the difference between souls in terms of an old vessel versus a new one, teaching that a soul that has sinned repeatedly is the one that becomes subject to repeated gilgul, but none of these sources gives the person himself a way to identify which category he is in.

What the sheet does supply is guidance on inner work regardless of one's status: Duties of the Heart, Eighth Treatise on Examining the Soul 1-3 calls for a spiritual accounting between the nefesh and the intellect to clarify one's outstanding duties toward the Creator, and Tanya, Part I; Likkutei Amarim 41:1 teaches that service must begin from arousing the natural fear hidden in the heart before love can be effectively pursued.

Tanya, Part I; Likkutei Amarim 27:3 warns that sadness over one's spiritual level often stems from conceit rather than true humility, urging instead the steady work of the beinoni to subdue temptation as it arises, and Likutei Moharan 25:1 similarly directs a person to break free from the pull of imagination and follow the intellect instead of the heart's illusory desires.

3 concludes that souls operate on two levels — one stirred toward God through understanding but feeling only the resulting love and awe, and a higher one that consciously perceives the divine illumination within that understanding — offering a further account of the inner work a soul is meant to pursue.

Niddah 30b adds that every soul is taught the whole Torah before birth and then made to forget it upon entering the world, bound by an oath to be righteous, which frames all human striving as a recovery of an original charge rather than as evidence of gilgul specifically, while Makkot 23b-24a simply enumerates the 613 mitzvot as the content of that charge.

Makkot 23b-24a

Rabbi Simlai summarizes the Torah's many commandments as progressively concentrated principles, culminating in Habakkuk's 'the righteous shall live by his faith.' This encourages identifying one's work through faithful practice, not esoteric self-diagnosis.

Niddah 30b

Niddah 30b:21

The fetus is taught the entire Torah before birth and made to swear to be righteous; an angel strikes it and causes it to forget. The passage grounds human life in a task of recovering and living Torah, though it does not teach a test for identifying a gilgul.

And a fetus is taught the entire Torah while in the womb, as it is stated: “And He taught me and said to me: Let your heart hold fast My words; keep My commandments, and live” (Proverbs 4:4). And it also states: “As I was in the days of my youth, when the converse of God was upon my tent” (Job 29:4). And once the fetus emerges into the airspace of the world, an angel comes and slaps it on its mouth, causing it to forget the entire Torah, as it is stated: “Sin crouches at the entrance” (Genesis 4:7), i.e., when a person enters the world he is immediately liable to sin due to his loss of Torah knowledge. And what is the oath that the angels administer to the fetus? Be righteous and do not be wicked. And even if the entire world says to you: You are righteous, consider yourself wicked. And know that the Holy One, Blessed be He, is pure, and His ministers are pure, and the soul that He gave you is pure. If you preserve it in a state of purity, all is well, but if you do not keep it pure, I, the angel, shall take it from you.

Duties of the Heart, Eighth Treatise on Examining the Soul 1-3

Rabbeinu Bachya develops systematic self-examination: reviewing one's deeds, motives, obligations, and spiritual condition. This is a practical alternative to trying to recover unverifiable memories of previous lives.

Spiritual account-taking means the deliberation of a man on his torah and worldly affairs between his nefesh (bodily soul/emotional side/will) and his intellect, so that one may know what one has and what one still owes of his duties. (this will be clarified through examples). The self accounting for people in their religious and secular matters varies according to their level of perception and intelligence, and clarity of understanding and every person is commanded to deliberate with his soul (i.e. bodily soul/instinct/will) as to what are his duties in the service of G-d, in accordance with his recognition of the favors of the Creator, whether collective or individual as the verse says: "And know this day; for I speak not with your children that have not known, and that have not seen... but your eyes have seen all the great work of the L-ord which He did" (Devarim 11:2-7). The verse means to say, that the claim from the Creator on you is stronger and more evident than the claim on your descendants who did not witness the miracles of the Creator, since you witnessed them with your own eyes, and only you were bestowed these great favors and were spared from the plagues of Egypt, and of Korach. But your descendants were not present, therefore you are more obligated to serve G-d on account of them. It is incumbent on the believer to take account with his soul what are his duties to G-d, and to think through this in meticulous details to the utmost extent of his ability, and according to what he is able to grasp of it. Then, whatever one is capable of attaining in practice, he should make diligent efforts in it and exert himself, and that which is beyond one's ability to attain in practice - he should attain an understanding of it, and desire for it, as David, peace be unto him, said "O that my ways were directed to keep your statutes!" (Tehilim 119:5), and "more to be desired are they than gold, than fine gold" (Tehilim 19:11). and the Creator will judge him favorably, and he should be on watch, for the time when he will be able to fulfill what is possible for him of his debts to the Creator.

Midrash Shmuel on Avot 4:20

Midrash Shmuel on Avot 4:20

The passage interprets the “new vessel” as a soul, explaining that souls differ: some are new and untainted, while others are old and may have undergone repeated gilgulim because of many sins; it therefore urges judging a person by the Torah wisdom within rather than by outward appearance, since the revelation of Torah’s secrets corresponds to the soul’s purity.

Yalkut Reuveni

The passage states that a person may undergo three gilgulim and then be cleansed in the נהר דינור and restored to his source, but warns against treating this as permission to transgress, since each gilgul may involve an unknowable duration—even a thousand years—and judgment follows one’s deeds.

Ramchal

Ramchal

The passage explains that the soul’s many parts may undergo repeated gilgulim, with only the uncorrected parts returning, and that a soul may also be placed in an animal, plant, or inanimate object as a painful form of atonement rather than as that being’s actual soul.

Tanya 27

Tanya, Part I; Likkutei Amarim 27:3

The Alter Rebbe teaches that recurring inner struggle is not evidence of spiritual failure; the purpose may be the struggle itself and the restraint of negative impulses. This offers a grounded answer to 'what should I work on': work with the actual struggles presently given to you.

On the contrary, such sadness is due to conceit in that he does not recognize his position. Hence he is sad at heart because he has not attained the rank of a tzaddik, inasmuch as the righteous are certainly not troubled by such foolish thoughts. For had he recognized his station, that he is very far from the rank of a tzaddik and would that he be a benoni and not a wicked person even for a single moment throughout his life—then, surely, this is the quality of the benonim and their service: To subdue the evil impulse and thought rising from the heart to the brain and completely to avert the mind therefrom, thrusting the temptation away with both hands, as has been explained earlier. Therefore, no person should feel depressed, nor should his heart become exceedingly troubled, even though he be engaged all his days in this conflict, for perhaps because of this was he created and this is his service—constantly to subjugate the sitra achara. It is concerning this that Job said, “You have created wicked men”—not that they shall actually be wicked, G–d forbid, but that they shall share the temptations of the wicked in their thoughts and meditations alone and that they shall eternally wage war to avert their minds from them in order to subdue the sitra achara; yet they would not be able to annihilate it completely, for that is accomplished by the tzaddikim.

Tanya 41

Tanya, Part I; Likkutei Amarim 41:1

The chapter describes cultivating awe of God and consciously placing oneself before Him in Torah and mitzvot. It provides a daily orientation for spiritual repair independent of knowing whether one is a gilgul.

One must, however, constantly bear in mind the beginning of the service and its core and root. By this is meant that, although fear is the root of “turn away from evil” and love—of “do good,” nevertheless it is not sufficient to awaken the love alone to do good, but one must at least first arouse the innate fear which lies hidden in the heart of every Jew not to rebel against the Supreme King of kings, the Holy One, blessed is He, as has been stated above, so that this [fear] shall manifest itself in his heart or, at least, his mind. This means that he should at least contemplate in his thought on the greatness of the En Sof, blessed is He, and on His Kingship, which extends to all worlds, both higher and lower, and that “He fills all worlds and encompasses all worlds,” as is written, “Do I not fill heaven and earth?” Yet He leaves both the higher and lower [worlds] and uniquely bestows His Kingdom upon His people Israel, in general, and upon him in particular, as, indeed, a man is obliged to say, “For my sake was the world created.” And on his part, he accepts His Kingdom upon himself, that He be King over him, to serve Him and do His will in all kinds of servile work. “And, behold, G–d stands over him,” and “The whole world is full of His glory,” and He looks upon him and “Searches his reins and heart” [to see] if he is serving Him as is fitting. Therefore he must serve in His presence with awe and fear like one standing before the king.

Likutei Moharan 25

Likutei Moharan 25:1

Rebbe Nachman emphasizes that despair must be rejected and that one should seek and recognize the good points within oneself. This makes present, concrete growth possible without demanding certainty about one's metaphysical past.

For every person must <break the power of imagination and enter> the intellect. But when he is drawn after the <illusory desires>, this is the aspect of “the vision of the heart” (cf. Deuteronomy 29:18). He follows <his heart’s inclination>. And when he extricates himself from the heart’s vision and breaks his “heart of stone” (Ezekiel 11:19) —this is the concept of the shamir worm. Through this <the heart of stone is broken and humbled>, so that he does not go after his illusory desires but after the intellect.

The passage describes two levels of souls, likened to “human seed” and “animal seed”: one is aroused toward God through understanding but experiences only the resulting love and awe, while the higher level consciously recognizes the divine illumination within that understanding.

Sulam on Zohar, Mishpatim 8

Sulam states that a soul requiring gilgul is not to be understood as sold into a foreign body under the dominion of the evil inclination; if it derives from Malchut of Atzilut, even when incarnated in the world of Beriah, it is neither subject to the labor nor enslavement of the kelipot.
