Rabbeinu Bahya, Vayikra 21:1
Q — Why are Kohanim forbidden specifically from the tumah of the dead, when ostensibly any tumah obstructs avodah?
A — Rabbeinu Bachya inverts the question with a hidden premise. Tzaddikim of the highest madreigah do not die through the מלאך המשחית at all — they die through מיתת נשיקה, a direct davqut with the Shechinah (the Avos earned this — "בכל מכל כל" — as did Moshe, Aharon, and Miriam, and as the Yerushalmi records, so did Rabbi Yehuda HaNasi). And here is the chiddush: where there is no machshis involved in the death, there is no tumah, because tumas hames is the residue left specifically by the *kochos hamashchit* that exit through death. This is why R' Yannai, at Rebbi's funeral, declared "אין כהונה היום" — the Kohanim could attend, because there was no tumah from which to be guarded. The issur of tumas hames on Kohanim therefore is not about death-itself; it is about *the kind of death that happens to most people*, the kind that leaves the residue of mashchis. The Kohen, as משרת עליון, must keep his service-vessels clean of those specific kochos.
