Elul: Spiritual Preparation and Return

Sources explore Elul as a season of introspection, repentance, and spiritual awakening in preparation for the High Holidays. The texts present teshuvah (return) as both a practical turning away from wrongdoing and a deeper restoration of the soul's connection to God.

What the sources say

The historical anchor for Elul as a sacred season is found in Pirkei DeRabbi Eliezer (46:2), which records that on Rosh Chodesh Elul God called Moshe back up to Sinai to receive the second tablets, and the shofar was sounded throughout the camp — establishing the month as one marked from its very first day by a call to ascend and return; Kitzur Shulchan Arukh (128:1) and Chayyei Adam, Shabbat and Festivals (138:1) both draw on this narrative explicitly, teaching that because Moshe remained on the mountain from Rosh Chodesh Elul until Yom Kippur — when full atonement was completed — these forty days were consecrated as days of divine favor (ימי רצון) for all generations.

The Nevi'im supply the scriptural voice of the season: Yeshayahu (55:6–7) calls out "Seek God while He may be found, call upon Him while He is near" and urges the wicked to abandon their ways and return to God Who "freely forgives," while Hoshea (14:2–5) opens with the direct imperative "Return, O Israel, to the Eternal your God" and instructs Israel to take words of confession and turn back — both passages read throughout this period as the Torah's own summons to repentance; Devarim (30:1–10) adds the promise that when Israel returns to God with all their heart and soul, God will in turn open their hearts to love Him.

Chazal ground the urgency of this period in the nature of divine judgment: the Gemara (Rosh Hashanah 16b) teaches that a person's sentence can be torn up through charity, prayer, a change of name, and — most critically — a change of deeds, and the Gemara (Rosh Hashanah 18a) identifies the ten days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur as the time when God is especially near to the individual, giving halachic weight to the verse in Yeshayahu about seeking God "while He is near."

The Rishonim articulate the theological substance that fills Elul: the Rambam (Mishneh Torah, Repentance 3:4) reads the shofar blast as a symbolic cry — "Awaken, you sleepers, from your sleep; rouse yourselves, you slumberers, from your slumber; examine your deeds and return in repentance" — and notes that all of Israel customarily increases charity, good deeds, and mitzvot from Rosh Hashanah through Yom Kippur more than at any other time of year; Sha'arei Teshuvah (1:1–10) presents repentance as one of God's greatest gifts to His creatures — a path prepared for them to ascend from the depths of their deeds — and Duties of the Heart, Seventh Treatise on Repentance (1–10) elaborates that effective repentance requires prior self-knowledge of one's failing, making the reflective work of Elul a necessary precondition.

The halakhic authorities codify the concrete practices through which this inner work is expressed: Tur, Orach Chayim (581) records that the Sages instituted shofar-blowing on Rosh Chodesh Elul and throughout the month to warn Israel to do teshuvah, citing the verse "If a shofar is sounded in the city" (Amos 3:6), and notes the Ashkenazic practice of blowing each morning and evening after prayer; Shulchan Arukh, Orach Chayim (581:1) codifies rising early to recite selichot and supplications from Rosh Chodesh Elul through Yom Kippur; and Mishnah Berurah (581:3) adds the daily communal recitation of ten chapters of Tehillim on weekdays from Rosh Chodesh Elul onward, as well as continued blowing of the shofar after morning prayer.

The deeper spiritual logic of the month is developed across several authorities: Shenei Luchot HaBerit, Rosh HaShanah, Ner Mitzva (2) notes the acronym for Elul embedded in the verse from Devarim (30:6) — "וּמָל ה' אֱלֹהֶיךָ אֶת לְבָבְךָ וְאֶת לְבַב זַרְעֶךָ" — whose initial letters spell אלול, signaling that this month is structurally prepared for teshuvah, and reasons that since Elul is the final month of the year, it is the fitting time to repair whatever was damaged across the year before entering Rosh Hashanah — the day of judgment — with one's deeds in order; Kitzur Shulchan Arukh (128:1) likewise calls these days "chosen and prepared for repentance" in a way that surpasses the rest of the year.

מאירי, משיב נפש מאמר פרק ב observes that just as it is proper to prepare in advance for any significant day, the custom spread in many communities to begin rising early for selichot from Rosh Chodesh Elul, so that one's thoughts arrive pure and clear when the month of Tishrei enters — the idea being that Elul should be exited in purity so that Tishrei is entered in holiness.

Hasidic thought deepens the season further: Sefat Emet, Devarim, For the Month of Elul (5:2) teaches that the forty days of divine favor themselves actively assist the hearts of Israel in teshuvah — the very days that were first experienced as times of divine acceptance continue to inspire return in every generation; Shem MiShmuel, Shoftim (6:19) frames Elul as a period of settling the mind (ישוב הדעת) in preparation for the "battle" of Rosh Hashanah, when the heavenly prosecutors arrive, drawing an analogy to the priest who addresses the people on the border before war; and Shem MiShmuel, Shoftim (3) urges that every person of spiritual aspiration should devote time during Elul to studying the tractates of Rosh Hashanah, Yoma, and Sukkah as the proper preparation for the great seventh month.

Several Hasidic and later works explore the path of teshuvah itself as it unfolds during this period: Tanya, Iggeret HaTeshuvah (1–4) holds that the Torah's basic requirement of teshuvah is abandonment of sin and a wholehearted resolve never to return to it — a return to God with all one's heart and soul; Tomer Devorah (1–2) adds the striking teaching that one who repents stands in a higher place before God than one who never sinned, making the penitent of Elul greater than they were before; and Nefesh HaChayim, Gate IV (31–32) argues that the deepest and most complete teshuvah flows specifically from Torah study, since drawing close to Torah draws one close to God.

The liturgical and contemplative dimensions of the season are also represented: Tehillim (27:1–14), recited throughout Elul and Tishrei, expresses the soul's singular longing — "One thing I ask of God, only that do I seek: to live in God's house all the days of my life" — and the heart's response to the divine call "Seek My face"; Sefat Emet, Rosh Hashanah (5639) connects the shofar-hearing of Rosh Hashanah to the daily renewal required of every person; Likutei Moharan (6:10) opens a Kabbalistic dimension, describing the kavanot of Elul as drawing a "way" through the "sea" to enable the spiritual passage of the month; and Mishnah Berurah (583) closes the cycle by urging that even the simanim of Rosh Hashanah night should prompt genuine teshuvah — and that one should be joyful, trusting in God, while guarding carefully against anger during these days.

The Hasidic masters also connect Elul to the themes of redemption and rectification: Peri Tzadik, Rosh Chodesh Elul (3:3) presents the month as preparatory specifically to Tishrei, when according to one opinion Israel is destined to be redeemed through teshuvah; Peri Tzadik, Rosh Chodesh Elul (3:4) adds that the month corresponds to the rectification of the nefesh, preparing for the second tablets given with the Oral Torah; and Peri Tzadik, Ki Tavo (13:3) notes that the Torah portions read before Rosh Hashanah — including the rebukes of Devarim — are designed to awaken awe (yirat shamayim) and prompt unity among Israel before the day of judgment.

Mishneh Halachos (11:472) addresses the practical expression of Elul consciousness in everyday life, concluding on our reading of the cited page that the custom of adding a blessing for a good year when writing letters to friends during Elul — traced to the Maharil — reflects the awareness that since Rosh Hashanah is a time of judgment, the preparatory month calls one to bless others and to hold the coming day of divine accounting in mind even in routine correspondence.

Isaiah 55:6-7

Isaiah 55:6-7

Isaiah calls people to seek God while He is near, abandon wicked ways, and return to God, who responds with abundant forgiveness. The passage is a direct biblical foundation for Elul’s themes of teshuvah and divine proximity.

Seek GOD while you can, Call out while [God] is near. Let the wicked give up their ways, The sinful, their plans; Let each one turn back to GOD So as to be pardoned; To our God, Who freely forgives.

Hosea 14:2-5

Hosea 14:2-5

Hosea urges Israel to return to God through words of confession and trust, promising that God will heal their faithlessness and love them freely. It is a central prophetic model for repentance before the Days of Awe.

Deuteronomy 30:1-10

Moses describes Israel’s return to God after exile, emphasizing that repentance is accessible and that God will gather, restore, and transform the people’s hearts. The passage presents teshuvah as both return and restoration.

When all these things befall you—the blessing and the curse that I have set before you—and you take them to heart amidst the various nations to which the ETERNAL your God has banished you, and you return to the ETERNAL your God, and you and your children heed God’s command with all your heart and soul, just as I enjoin upon you this day, Then the ETERNAL your God will open up your heart and the hearts of your offspring—to love the ETERNAL your God with all your heart and soul, in order that you may live.

Psalms 27:1-14

Psalms 27:1-14

The psalm combines confidence in God, longing to dwell in His presence, and a plea for guidance and salvation. Its repeated use during Elul and the High Holiday season makes it a major devotional text for spiritual preparation.

One thing I ask of GOD, only that do I seek: to live in GOD’s house all the days of my life, to gaze upon GOD’s beauty, to frequent the temple. In Your behalf my heart says: “Seek My face!” O ETERNAL One, I seek Your face. Show me Your way, O ETERNAL One, and lead me on a level path because of my watchful foes.

Pirkei DeRabbi Eliezer 46

Pirkei DeRabbi Eliezer 46:2

This chapter associates Moses’ return to Sinai for the second tablets with the period extending from the beginning of Elul through Yom Kippur, providing a classic rabbinic framework for Elul as preparation for renewed covenant and forgiveness.

Rabbi Joshua, son of Ḳorchah, said: Forty days was Moses on the mountain, reading the Written Law by day, and studying the Oral Law by night. After the forty days he took the tables (of the Law) and descended into the camp on the 17th of Tammuz, and he broke in pieces the tables, and slew the sinners in Israel. He then spent forty days in the camp, until he had burnt the calf, and powdered it like the dust of the earth, and he had destroyed the idol worship from Israel, and he instituted every tribe in its place. And on the New Moon of Ellul the Holy One, blessed be He, said to him: "Come up || to me on the mount" (Ex. 24:12), and let them sound the Shophar (trumpet) throughout the camp, for, behold, Moses has ascended the mount, so that they do not go astray again after the worship of idols. The Holy One, blessed be He, was exalted with that Shophar, as it is said, "God is exalted with a shout, the Lord with the sound of a trumpet" (Ps. 47:5). Therefore the sages instituted that the Shophar should be sounded on the New Moon of Ellul every year. The Son of Bethera said: Moses spent forty days on the mount, expounding the meaning of the words of the Torah, and examining its letters. After forty days he took the Torah, and descended on the tenth of the month, on the Day of Atonement, and gave it as an everlasting inheritance to the children of Israel, as it is said, "And this shall be unto you an everlasting statute" (Lev. 16:34).

Rosh Hashanah 16b

Rosh Hashanah 16b:6

The famous teaching that three practices—repentance, prayer, and charity—can avert a harsh decree became a central framework for the spiritual work of the High Holiday season and the preparation leading into it.

And Rabbi Yitzḥak said: A person’s sentence is torn up on account of four types of actions. These are: Giving charity, crying out in prayer, a change of one’s name, and a change of one’s deeds for the better. An allusion may be found in Scripture for all of them: Giving charity, as it is written: “And charity delivers from death” (Proverbs 10:2); crying out in prayer, as it is written: “Then they cry to the Lord in their trouble, and He brings them out of their distresses” (Psalms 107:28); a change of one’s name, as it is written: “As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be” (Genesis 17:15), and it is written there: “And I will bless her, and I will also give you a son from her” (Genesis 17:16); a change of one’s deeds for the better, as it is written: “And God saw their deeds” (Jonah 3:10), and it is written there: “And God repented of the evil, which He had said He would do to them, and He did not do it” (Jonah 3:10). § The Gemara goes back to discuss the Day of Judgment. Rabbi Kruspedai said that Rabbi Yoḥanan said: Three books are opened on Rosh HaShana before the Holy One, Blessed be He: One of wholly wicked people, and one of wholly righteous people, and one of middling people whose good and bad deeds are equally balanced. Wholly righteous people are immediately written and sealed for life; wholly wicked people are immediately written and sealed for death; and middling people are left with their judgment suspended from Rosh HaShana until Yom Kippur, their fate remaining undecided. If they merit, through the good deeds and mitzvot that they perform during this period, they are written for life; if they do not so merit, they are written for death.

Rosh Hashanah 18a

Rosh Hashanah 18a:12

The Talmud teaches that the period from Rosh Hashanah to Yom Kippur is one of special divine judgment and also discusses the efficacy of repentance, prayer, and charity. It establishes the liturgical season into which Elul leads.

§ The Gemara asks: With regard to an individual, when is God near to him? Rabba bar Avuh said: These are the ten days between Rosh HaShana and Yom Kippur. The Gemara asks further: The verse states: “And it came to pass about ten days after that the Lord smote Nabal, and he died” (I Samuel 25:38). These ten days, what are they doing here, i.e., why was there a delay of ten days before Nabal died? Rav Yehuda said that Rav said: They correspond to the ten meals that Nabal gave the servants of David who came to visit him, as out of politeness he allowed David’s ten servants to eat, and therefore his punishment was delayed for ten days. Rav Naḥman said that Rabba bar Avuh said: These are the ten days between Rosh HaShana and Yom Kippur, during which everyone is given one last opportunity to repent for the sins he committed over the course of the previous year. MISHNA: In six months of the year the messengers go out from the court in Jerusalem to report throughout Eretz Yisrael and the Diaspora which day was established as the New Moon, the thirtieth or the thirty-first day since the previous New Moon. They go out in the month of Nisan, due to Passover, so that people will know on which day to celebrate it; in the month of Av, due to the fast of the Ninth of Av; in Elul, due to Rosh HaShana, which begins thirty days after the New Moon of Elul; in Tishrei, due to the need to establish the correct dates on which to celebrate the Festivals of Tishrei, i.e., Yom Kippur and Sukkot; in Kislev, due to Hanukkah; and in Adar, due to Purim.

Mishneh Torah, Repentance 3:4

Mishneh Torah, Repentance 3:4

Maimonides teaches that although the shofar’s decree is fixed, its message calls people to awaken, examine their deeds, and return to God. This makes the passage especially relevant to Elul’s introspective preparation.

Sha'arei Teshuvah 1:1-10

Rabbeinu Yonah presents repentance as a structured process beginning with recognizing sin, regretting it, confessing, and changing conduct. The opening gates offer a practical program for Elul self-examination.

In explanation of repentance and its principles Among the good things which God, may He be blessed, has bestowed upon His creations is the path which He prepared for them to ascend from the baseness of their actions, to escape the trap of their inequities, to hold their souls back from destruction and to remove His anger from upon them. Because of His goodness and uprightness, He has taught them and warned them to return to Him when they sin against Him - for He understands their nature, as it is stated (Psalms 25:8), "Good and upright is the Lord; therefore He shows sinners the way." [Even] if they greatly sin and rebel and act like treacherous betrayers - He does not close the doors of repentance to them, as it is stated (Isaiah 31:6), "Return, to Him to whom they have been so shamefully false." It is [also] stated (Jeremiah 3:22), "Turn back, O rebellious children, I will heal your afflictions." We are warned about repentance in several places in the Torah. It is explained that repentance is accepted even when the sinner repents because of his many troubles - how much more so [will it be accepted] if he returns because of fear or love of God - as it is stated (Deuteronomy 4:30), "When you are in distress because all these things have befallen you and, in the end, return to the Lord your God and obey Him." It is explained in the Torah that God will help those who repent beyond what their natural ability would allow; and that He renews a pure spirit within them, to reach great heights in His love - as it is stated (Deuteronomy 30:2), "And you return to the Lord your God, and you and your children heed His command with all your heart and soul, just as I enjoin upon you this day." Further, it is stated about the body of the matter (Deuteronomy 30:6), "Then the Lord, your God, will circumcise your heart and the hearts of your offspring," to acquire love for Him. And the Prophets and Writings constantly speak on the subject of repentance, such that the principles of repentance are all explained in their words, as will be explained. Now we will explain the principles of repentance. The first principle is regret: His heart should understand that leaving God is bad and bitter; and he should place into his heart that there is punishment, vengeance and repayment for iniquity, as it is stated (Deuteronomy 32:35), "To be My vengeance and repayment." And it is stated (Job 19:29), "Be in fear of the sword, for [your] fury is iniquity worthy of the sword." And he should regret his bad deeds and say in his heart, "What have I done? How did I not have fear of God in front of my eyes, and did not become afraid from the rebukes of iniquity and from the harsh judgments? For there are many aches [waiting] for the evildoer. I did not pity my body; and for a moment of pleasure, my eyes did not pity its being destroyed. I became like a man who robs and extorts, eats and is satiated; but who knows that after his eating and his drinking, the judge will grind his teeth with gravel - like the matter that is stated (Proverbs 20:17), 'but later his mouth will be filled with gravel.' And worse than this, I was cruel to the dear soul and I rendered it impure with the idols of my impulse. And what did it gain from all of its acquisitions, if they are bad in the eyes of its Master? And how did I trade a passing world for a world that exists for ever and ever? How have I become similar to animals? As I have gone after my impulse like a horse, like a mule that does not understand. And I have strayed from the way of the intellect. And behold the Creator blew a living soul into my nose - a wise heart and the benefit of intellect - in order to recognize Him and fear Him and to govern over the body and all of its actions, like it governs over the other animals that do not speak, because it is precious in His eyes. And though I was created like this, it has become the opposite of this in me. Why am I alive? It is like the matter that is stated (Proverbs 21:16), 'A man who strays from the path of the intellect will rest in the company of ghosts.' Moreover I have not [even] fulfilled the precept of the animal. Rather I have been lower than that. For the ox knows its master and the donkey the trough of its owner; whereas I have not known and not reflected. And I have sent my soul to be free from its master. So I have tasted my nectar, but forgotten my end. And I have stolen and extorted and trampled upon the indigent. I have not remembered the day of death, upon which nothing will remain before my soul besides my corpse and my dirt." And this matter that we have explained is that which Jeremiah, peace be upon him, had spoken, "No one regrets his wickedness and says, 'What have I done?'"

Duties of the Heart, Seventh Treatise on Repentance 1-10

Bahya ibn Paquda analyzes the inner dimensions of repentance, including recognition of wrongdoing, remorse, humility, confession, and correcting one’s relationship with God and other people.

- What is repentance With regard to what is repentance, I say that repentance means that a man makes himself fit to resume the service of the Creator after he went out of it and transgressed against it, and to restore what he lost in it. This could be due to: - What a man needs to know to repent What are the prerequisites of repentance? I say on this, to be effective, repentance must be preceded by first understanding seven things: (1) The penitent must understand clearly that he did a disgraceful act. Because, if this is not clear to him, and he is in doubt or ignorant of it, it is not possible for him to regret it and seek forgiveness for it, as written: "For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me" (Tehilim 51:5) (5) He must be fully convinced that repentance is the remedy for his illness, and the road to recovery from his evil deed and disgraceful conduct, and through it he will correct his error and recover what he had lost. Because if this is not clear to him, he will despair from obtaining the Creator's atonement and mercies, and he will not seek forgiveness for past wickedness, as written "So have you spoken, saying: For our transgressions and our sins are upon us, and because of them we are melting away, so how should we then live?" (Yechezkel 33:10), and they were answered by the Creator through His prophet: "Say to them: As I live, says the L-ord G-d, I do not wish for the death of the wicked, [but for the wicked to repent of his way so that he may live. Repent, repent of your evil ways, for why should you die, O house of Israel]" (Yechezkel 33:11).

It is fitting to prepare and contemplate matters of a day one period beforehand in order to arouse oneself regarding the day's concerns, and for this reason the custom became widespread in many places to begin and increase prayer from the start of Elul and to recite selihot at dawn, so that one's thoughts would be pure and clean when the day arrives, such that Rosh Chodesh Elul is completed in purity and Tishrei enters in holiness.

Shenei Luchot HaBerit, Aseret HaDibrot, Rosh HaShanah, Ner Mitzva:2

Israelite practice is to fast from the beginning of Elul until Yom Kippur, which are days when selichot and tachanun are recited, and the acrostic of "vemol Hashem Elokecha et levavcha ve-et levav zarecha" (Devarim 30:6) spells Elul, indicating that this month is prepared for teshuvah; it is fitting that in this final month of the year one should do teshuvah for what was damaged throughout the year and should not enter Rosh Hashanah (the day of judgment) despised for his evil deeds, but rather should correct what has passed in this month.

Tomer Devorah 1-2

Rabbi Moshe Cordovero describes imitating God’s attributes, especially divine patience, compassion, and bearing others’ faults. It frames repentance as transformation of character and preparation to receive divine mercy.

The seventh: "He will again have mercy on us" - behold, the Holy One, blessed be He, does not follow the trait of flesh and blood. [That trait is that] if [someone] angers him - if he is appeased from him, he is a little appeased, [but] not like the previous love [he had for him]. But if a person sinned [to God] and he repents, his stature is greater with the Holy One, blessed be He, [than before]. And this is [the meaning of] "In the place that penitents stand, [even] completely righteous ones cannot stand" (Berakhot 34b). And the reason is like they explained in the chapter [entitled] HaBoneh (it is in Menachot 29b in our texts) regarding why [the letter,] hey is made like a portico: "Such that the one that wants to exit from his world [may] exit." The explanation is that the world was created with a hey. And the Holy One, blessed be He, created the world widely open to the side of evil and sin. There is no side that does not have physicality, the evil impulse and defect - like a type of portico. It does not have fences but rather has a large breach, open towards the side of evil, to the bottom side. How many openings are there for anyone who wants to exit from his world - he cannot turn to a side that he will not find a side of sin and iniquity to go out to the external forces (chitsonim)! But it is [also] open from above; so that if he repents, he will be accepted. And they asked, "Let him be taken back through [the bottom]!" [They answered,] "the matter will not help." They [meant] with this that one who repents will not suffice to be fenced from iniquity [with a fence] like the fence of the righteous ones, since they has did not sin - a small fence suffices for them. However a small fence will not suffice for the sinner that sinned and repented. Rather, he needs to fence himself with several difficult fences, since he already breached the small fence once. If he approaches there, his impulse seduces him easily. Rather he needs to distance himself with a very great distancing. And for this [reason], he does not enter through the opening of the portico, where the breach is there. Rather, he ascends and enters through the small opening, [such that] he makes several difficulties and mortifications for himself and [thereby] closes the breaches. And from this reason, "In the place that penitents stand, etc." - because they do not enter through the opening of the righteous ones, so that they will be with the righteous ones. Rather, they trudge and climb through the higher opening, and mortify themselves and become much more separated from sin than the righteous ones. Hence they climbed and stood on the level (or acclivity) of hey (the numerical equivalent of which is five) - the fifth chamber in the Garden of Eden, that is to say the roof of the hey - whereas the righteous ones are at the opening of the hey, at the entrance of the portico. And accordingly, when a person undergoes repentance (teshuvah) - which is [that] hey returns (teshuv hey) to its place - and the Holy One, blessed be He, brings back His Presence upon him, He does not come back [with a love] only like the first love, but rather much more. And this is [the meaning of] "He will again have mercy on us" - that He will add to His mercy on Israel and refine them more and bring them closer.

Nefesh HaChayim, Gate IV 31-32

Rav Chaim Volozhiner emphasizes Torah study as a means of cleaving to God and refining one’s spiritual life. The passage supports an Elul program centered on renewed Torah engagement and inner alignment.

For the essence of true complete repentance that arises out of love is only via involvement with Torah to the level it deserves, as is written in the chapter of the levels of Torah (Avot, chapter 6): “…loves the Ma-kome”, and as is written “Return us, our Father, to your Torah… and restore us before you with a complete repentance”. And in Zohar Va-yikra (21a): “When a person distances himself from the Torah, he is far from the Holy One (blessed be He). And one who comes closer to the Torah, the Holy One (blessed be He) brings him closer to Him.” For the love of Torah will cover up all sins, as is written in Tahna D’vei Eliyahu, Seder Eliyahu Rabba (chapter 3) on this verse (Mishlei 10:12). And so too they wrote in P’tee-kha-ta Eikha (2): “The lamp with which he is returned to good condition”. And in Perek Heh-kha-leel (Sukka 52b): “If that revolting one engages you, drag him to the study hall; if he is a stone, he will dissolve... .” And they said something similar to this in Tahn-khooma, parshat Ha-ah-zeenu, refer there [for more details]. And in Bereshit Rabba (parsha 22): “If your inclination comes to wear you down, entertain him with words of Torah”. And in Midrash T’hillim (end of Mizmor 34): “If the evil inclination waits for you, feed him the bread of Torah.” This is what is stated in Parshat Ha-Torah (Avot, chapter 6): “and he will become as a spring that overcomes and goes on its way”. And there’s room to also explain it relative to this matter mentioned above, that just as a spring gushes and splits anything in its path, even though at times it’s mired and clogged by large amounts of mud and clay, even so it gushes and unblocks its path, and overcomes and flows slowly but surely, until after many days it overcomes and is fully and completely revealed, and flows as before. So too one who is involved with Torah for its own sake, even if he is at first soiled with awesome transgressions and sins, and is very mired in the depths of the mud and clay (may the Merciful save us), even so, via involvement with the Torah, his heart/ mind will be surely set aright, for the lamp within it will certainly return him to good condition, and the good will overcome the evil within him little by little, until finally, without a doubt, the good will overcome and flow in every part of him completely, and he will be sanctified from his spiritual impurity, and spiritual purity will flower in every part of him.

Peri Tzadik, Rosh Chodesh Elul 3:4

This month corresponds to the soul and serves as preparation to repair what was damaged, since on this month's forty day period Moshe received the second Tablets along with the Oral Torah to correct the great anger, and this will be preparation for Tishrei in which redemption is destined to occur.

Peri Tzadik, Rosh Chodesh Elul 3:3

The month of Elul precedes Tishrei, in which redemption is destined to occur; according to one view, Tishrei is when the world was created and redemption comes through repentance, while according to another view redemption will come in Nisan (the month of mercy) regardless; but all agree that if Israel repents in Tishrei they will be redeemed, and Elul was created to repair action through wisdom (the phrase "let there be light"), corresponding to the five times light appears in creation against the five books of Torah.

Before Rosh Hashanah, which is a time of fear and repentance, the recitation of the curses from Mishne Torah is ordained to rectify a breach in the covenant and to awaken each person to correct the flaw of baseless hatred; through achieving the fear characteristic of Yosef the Righteous, one merits the quality of peace and all become one unified community to do God's will with a whole heart.

The month of Elul, through its shofar blasts, prepares the Jewish people by settling their minds and removing confusion, thereby arousing the higher attribute of divine knowledge and preventing the accusations of the nations' princes who come to prosecute on Rosh Hashanah—analogous to the Torah's account of the priest who addresses the people before entering battle to settle their resolve.

Tanya, Part III; Iggeret HaTeshuvah 1-4

Tanya, Part III; Iggeret HaTeshuvah 1-4

The Alter Rebbe explains teshuvah as returning the soul to its source through regret, confession, and restoring the relationship with God. The opening chapters distinguish practical repair from a deeper spiritual return.

The commandment of repentance as required by the Torah is simply the abandonment of sin (cf. Sanhedrin, ch. 3; Choshen Mishpat, end of sect. 34, regarding witnesses). He must resolve in perfect sincerity never again to revert to folly to rebel against His rule, blessed be He; he will never again violate the King’s command, G–d forbid, neither a positive command nor a prohibition. This is the basic meaning of the term teshuvah, repentance, to return to G–d with all his heart and soul, to serve Him, and to keep all His commandments. “Let the wicked abandon his way, and the sinful his thoughts, and return to G–d….” In Parashat Nitzavim it is written: “Return to the L–rd your G–d and hearken to His voice…with all your heart…,” and “Return O Israel to the L–rd your G–d…,” and “Bring us back, L–rd, to You….”

This is the hidden meaning of the kavanot (meditations) of Elul. I heard a little about this [from Rebbe Nachman], but it was only like a drop in the sea. Study the meditations of Elul, where it is explained that the general kavanot of Elul are [based on the verse] (Isaiah 43:16), “… Who makes a way through the sea.” For one must take the aspect of “way” and shine it into the “sea.” This derekh (way) is the aspect of two times the Holy Name Yabok, because twice Yabok equals derekh. This proceeds from the aspect of two Holy Names, KaSA [and] SaG. For these two names, KaSA and SaG, have a numerical value equal to two times Yabok, which is the numerical value of derekh. 12. Based on Kabbalistic teaching we know that concealed in this is the hidden meaning of the kavanot of Elul. For baky is the aspect of the above mentioned Holy Name YaBoK, which has the same letters as BaKY. When a person attains the two types of expertise mentioned earlier, which is twice baky —i.e., baky b’ratzo (running) and baky b’shov (returning)—he also attains the derekh (way) of repentance. This is because twice baky, which is the aspect of twice the Holy Name Yabok, is equal to the numerical value of derekh. For by following the method of the kavanot, this derekh is made from the segol of KaSA and the chirik of SaG, which [also] have the numerical value of twice Yabok.

Nitei Gavriel, Rosh Hashana, perek 6

The passage states that when writing a letter to another person during Elul through Yom Kippur, it is proper to hint at the beginning or end of the letter that the recipient merit a good inscription and sealing in the coming days.

On this pageThis chapter outlines several customs observed during the month of Elul leading up to Yom Kippur. These include writing a blessing for a good year in one's letters, having one's tefillin and mezuzot checked, and focusing on prayers for the repentance and return of those who have strayed from the Torah. Additionally, it states that conducting rabbinical court cases (din Torah) is permitted during this month. The text outlines several practices for the month of Elul and the High Holiday period (Chapter 6, sections 5–8): undertaking a 'fast of speech' (avoiding idle chatter) from Rosh Chodesh Elul until Yom Kippur; fasting on the 17th of Elul (the day the spies died); and refraining from eating nuts from the start of Selichot until Hoshana Rabbah. The text outlines customs for the month of Elul, detailing that walnuts are permitted in cooked or baked dishes if their taste is nullified, though some remain strict until Hoshana Rabbah. It also notes the practices of increasing charity, studying Tikunei Zohar and Tomer Devorah, and avoiding moving into a new home within thirty days of Sukkot (starting from the 15th of Elul).

Nitei Gavriel, Yom Kippur, perek 33

While repentance is obligatory at all times, Yom Kippur serves as the primary season of forgiveness for all individuals and the community, requiring verbal confession and true repentance—which consists of abandoning the sin, resolving never to repeat it, feeling regret, and confessing before God even after interpersonal forgiveness is obtained.

On this pageThis chapter outlines the obligation of repentance (Teshuvah) and confession (Vidui) on Yom Kippur, stating that while repentance is required at all times, Yom Kippur is the primary season of forgiveness. True repentance consists of abandoning the sin, resolving never to repeat it, and feeling regret for past actions. One must verbally confess (viduy) for every sin as part of the repentance process, including interpersonal sins like gossip, causing pain, or embarrassing someone. Even after the victim has forgiven the offender, full atonement is not achieved until the offender also confesses the sin before God.
