Breslov Avoda of Repentance and Confession

Breslov teachings on Yom Kippur's spiritual work (avoda), particularly the role of viduy (confession) in achieving genuine repentance and liberation of the soul. Sources explore how verbal confession and sincere regret lead to freedom from the impulses of the evil inclination and allow a person to discover his true will.

What the sources say

The foundation of teshuvah — abandoning sin in deed and thought, feeling remorse for the past, resolving never to return to that sin, and articulating all of this through verbal confession — is laid out by the Rambam (Mishneh Torah, Repentance 2:2), who grounds each element in a pasuk and insists that the inner resolution must be given voice through the lips.

Rav Gavriel Zinner (Nitei Gavriel, Yom Kippur, perek 33) rules that viduy is an essential component of teshuvah on Yom Kippur, obligatory for all Jews across all five services of the day, and must be accompanied by genuine resolve not to repeat one's sins, with specific attention to sins between a person and God as well as between a person and a fellow human.

Rav Eliezer Melamed (Peninei Halakhah, Days of Awe 6:11) frames teshuvah as an act of liberation: through it a person escapes the bondage of the evil inclination, reveals his true will, and allows his soul to illuminate his path — connecting this inner transformation to the teaching of the Sages in Avot that only one who is engaged in Torah is truly free.

The Pitchei Teshuva cites the practice that a groom recites the full order of viduy at Mincha — in the manner of Yom Kippur — before taking his three steps back, and rules that this applies even on Rosh Chodesh and other days when no fast is observed (Pitchei Teshuva, Even HaEzer 61:9), reflecting how deeply the Yom Kippur model of confession shaped broader liturgical life.

Tzitz Eliezer (20:75) teaches that on Yom Kippur God relates to Israel with the quality of a merciful father rather than a stern judge, and that the day's singular combination of divine judgment and exclusive divine mercy means that even one who cannot achieve complete teshuvah through his own efforts can be purified and atoned for when his return is accompanied by prayer and tears.

Pitchei Teshuva on Shulchan Arukh, Even HaEzer 61:9

The groom and bride fast, and there are two reasons for this practice; one source discusses whether if the wedding is delayed by an hour or two on the night before, one may rely on the first reason and fast only until nightfall rather than the full day, since this fast is not mentioned in the Gemara and therefore was not accepted as a stringency beyond other fasts, though one should refrain from drinking intoxicating beverages before the wedding; another source notes that the groom recites the full viduy after the Mincha prayer on the day of the wedding, before moving from his place, in the manner of Yom Kippur, and the commentator holds this should be done even on Rosh Chodesh and other non-fasting days, and has ruled this way in practice.

Rav Eliezer Melamed (Peninei Halakhah, Days of Awe 6:11)

פניני הלכה, ימים נוראים ו׳:י״א

Peninei Halakhah, Days of Awe 6:11

Through repentance, a person attains freedom and discovers his true will; his soul is liberated from the constraints of the impulse to evil and begins to illuminate his path, and the life within him grows stronger, as the sages said in Avot: "there is no free person except one who engages in Torah," for Torah guides a person on the path of truth and good, through which he can fulfill all his good aspirations and the divine ideals his soul longs for.
