Vidui as Removing Barriers to Divine Connection

Sources explore confession and repentance as a process of clearing away character traits, false self-perceptions, and separation from God that obstruct one's direct relationship with the Divine, rather than merely addressing past wrongs.

What the sources say

The most direct Chassidic articulation of this idea comes from the Tanya, Iggeret HaTeshuvah 7, which frames sins not primarily as moral failures to be regretted but as clouds that obstruct the flow of divine light to the soul — grave sins forming a thick, dark cloud between the interior divine effulgence and the divine soul, and lighter sins forming many wispy curtains that together darken as much as one heavy cloud, so that the work of teshuvah is fundamentally the clearing away of what blocks the relationship.

The Esh Kodesh (Shabbat Teshuvah 5700) sharpens this point by insisting that returning only to the state before one sinned is insufficient — the prophet's call is "return until the Lord your God," meaning teshuvah must be an ascent of the whole person in holiness and purity toward God, not merely the subtraction of a particular transgression.

The Shem MiShmuel (Yom Kippur תרע״ב) extends this further by teaching that on Yom Kippur all particular desires must be nullified — even prayers for children, life, and sustenance are understood only as the removal of obstacles that prevent one from being absorbed into divine light — while the essential intention of the day is the love of God itself and the soul's return to its root, like fire that always moves upward toward its source.

The Tanya, Likkutei Amarim 29 frames the anthropological foundation of this view: the vital soul, the self as ordinarily experienced, is identified with the sitra achara, whereas the divine soul within a person is pure by nature — "the soul which You have given within me is pure" — and what we call "the self" in a beinoni is precisely not the pure divine soul; teshuvah is therefore the process of coming to identify with what one truly is rather than with what has been overlaying it.

The Tanya, Likkutei Amarim 31 carries this to its joyful conclusion: the person who has humbled and examined himself can then recognize that all that is base in him is "myself alone, the body with its vivifying soul," while there is nonetheless within him "a veritable part of God" — the divine soul — which is merely in exile, so that teshuvah is the liberation of what was always there rather than the construction of something new.

Likutei Moharan 6:2 offers a parallel Breslov formulation: before teshuvah a person does not yet truly exist — it is as though he has not yet come into being in the world — and the act of preparing to purify oneself places one in the aspect of ehyeh, "I am prepared to be," so that teshuvah is the emergence of genuine existence rather than simply the erasure of past wrongs.

The Shaarei Teshuvah of the Mitteler Rebbe addresses the inner structure of teshuvah and its relationship to the ingathering of the soul's scattered sparks, and concludes, on our reading of the cited page, that teshuvah surpasses even Torah in essential power because it does not merely distinguish between good and evil but actually transforms evil into good, generating a supernal simple pleasure that exceeds the pleasure of Torah's discernment.

מכתב מאליהו, חלק א עמוד רנד cites the Maharal's definition of vidui — that confessing a sin is an act of surrendering oneself entirely to God, thereby utterly removing the evil inclination, since the evil inclination has no point of attachment to God — so that vidui is less an accounting of wrongs and more a total self-giving that eliminates what was interposed between the person and the divine.

Peninei Halakhah, Days of Awe 6:6 articulates a related principle in the context of Yom Kippur fasting: throughout the year the soul is enveloped in a cloak of physicality and bodily desire that causes people to forget their inner aspirations, and the fast is commanded so that the soul can disengage somewhat from the bonds of the body, allowing its true and noble aspirations to express themselves freely — from within that elevated connection to the root of the soul, sins fall away rather than being individually extracted.

The Mishneh Torah, Repentance 2:4 notes that among the paths of teshuvah is changing one's name — declaring "I am another person and not the one who did those deeds" — a formulation that gestures toward the same underlying idea, namely that teshuvah involves a reconstitution of identity, though the Mishneh Torah, Repentance 2:2 frames the essential act in terms of abandoning the sin and resolving not to return to it, representing the classical legal baseline against which the Chassidic sources above offer a deeper inward dimension.

Sha'arei Teshuvah 1:9

While forgiveness is available for all repentance, the soul does not achieve complete purity to render sins as if they never occurred except when a person purifies his heart and prepares his spirit in a specific manner; as the verse states "Happy is the man to whom the Lord does not impute iniquity and in whose spirit there is no guile," and like a garment that needs washing—slight washing removes filth from it, but through thorough washing it becomes white.

Sefer HaIkkarim, Maamar 4 26:1

The paths of repentance by which a person is purified from his transgressions consist of three components—correcting thought, speech, and action: thought through regret for one's sins, speech through confession of one's transgressions, and action through resolving not to return to folly and performing deeds that demonstrate the earlier actions were mistakes made in ignorance.

Mishneh Torah, Repentance 2:2

Rambam defines complete teshuvah as encountering the same situation and no longer doing the act, and requires abandoning the sin, regretting it, confessing, and resolving not to return. The sequence portrays confession as removing the behavior and self-understanding that interfere with becoming one’s truer self before God.

Rambam teaches that teshuvah and Yom Kippur atone only for sins between a person and God, while interpersonal wrongs require reconciliation. This distinguishes the external repair of harm from the inward clearing away of what blocks one’s direct relationship with God.

Derekh Chayyim 3:1

Derekh Chayyim 3:1

When a person recognizes himself as dependent upon God and maintains attachment to that source, he does not come to sin; sin and the evil inclination exist only when a person separates himself from that source and fails to regard himself as dependent upon it, and therefore the teaching to "look upon three things and you will not come to transgression" refers to removal of separation from God.

Tanya, Iggeret HaTeshuvah 7

Tanya, Part III; Iggeret HaTeshuvah 7:12

The Alter Rebbe describes teshuvah as restoring the divine Name and the flow of life disrupted by sin, using kabbalistic language of separation and repair. This strongly supports understanding vidui as clearing away a blockage in the bond between the soul and God, beyond simply accepting blame.

The prophet compares sins to a cloud that dims the light of the sun. “I have wiped away your transgressions like a cloud”—these are the grave sins [that are barriers] between the interior of the power flowing forth from G–d and the divine soul. This barrier is like the separation of a thick cloud that stands between the sun and the earth with its inhabitants. “And like a cloud your sins”—these are the lesser sins that man tramples under heel, sins that separate as does a thin and wispy cloud. In the illustration, if one obscures the sunlight streaming through a window with many fine and lacy curtains, they will darken as much as one thick curtain will, and even more. Exactly so is the parallel, with all those sins that man tramples indifferently, and certainly those well known from the words of our Sages to be actually like idolatry, immorality, and bloodshed.

Tanya 29

Tanya, Part I; Likkutei Amarim 29:6

The Alter Rebbe explains that spiritual heaviness and self-disgust can be used to break the obstruction created by the animal soul, but warns against becoming trapped in them. This is a particularly direct Chabad formulation of teshuvah as removing the concealment and resistance that prevent the divine soul from expressing its bond with God.

Therefore one must crush it and cast it down to the ground, that is to say, by setting aside appointed times for humbling oneself and considering oneself despicable and contemptible, as is written, “A broken heart, a broken spirit”—this is the sitra achara, which is the very man himself in benonim (intermediates), in whose heart the vital soul which animates the body is in its native strength; hence it is the very man himself. Whereas with regard to the divine soul within him it is said, “The soul which You have given within me is pure.” Note the words “which You have given within me,” implying that man himself is not [identified with] the pure soul—except in the case of tzaddikim, in whom the contrary is true, namely, that the “pure soul,” i.e., the divine soul, is the man, while their body is called “The flesh of man.” Compare the statement of Hillel the Elder to his disciples, who, when going to eat, used to say that he was going to perform an act of kindness to the “lowly and poor creature,” by which he meant his body, which he regarded as if it were foreign to him. Therefore he used the expression that he was “performing an act of kindness” toward it in giving it food, because he himself was nothing else but the divine soul, since it alone animated his body and flesh inasmuch as in the tzaddikim the evil that was in the vital soul pervading his blood and flesh, had been transformed into good and absorbed into the very holiness of the divine soul.

Teshuvah surpasses Torah in its essential nature and power, because while Torah's role is to distinguish between good and evil through wisdom, teshuvah actually transforms evil itself into good—just as on Yom Kippur intentional sins become merits—and this reversal (when the evil inclination is subdued and the Divine name's honor is restored) generates a supreme simple pleasure exceeding that of Torah's discernment; Rabbi's admiration for Rabbi Elazar ben Durdia, whose soul departed in tears and thus achieved transformation of evil into good in a single hour, demonstrates that teshuvah from the depths of the heart accomplishes in one moment what even a complete righteous person cannot achieve through Torah and mitzvot alone.

Tanya, Part I; Likkutei Amarim 31:9

The Alter Rebbe describes bitterness over the distance from God as a constructive spiritual state that can lead to joy when one recognizes the divine soul’s essential attachment to God. The movement is from confronting what is not the self’s deepest identity to uncovering the relationship beneath the obstruction.

Following this he will attain true joy when he will reflect in his heart and gain a double measure of comfort, in view of what has been said above in truth, saying to himself: “Truly and without doubt I am far removed from G–d, and I am abominable and loathsome, and so on. Yet all this is myself alone, that is to say, the body with its vivifying soul. Yet, there is within me a veritable part of G–d, which is found even in the most worthless of the worthless, namely, the divine soul with a spark of veritable G–dliness which is clothed in it and animates it, except that it is, as it were, in [a state of] exile. Therefore, on the contrary, the further I am separated from G–d, and the more contemptible and loathsome, the deeper in exile is my divine soul, and the more greatly is she to be pitied; therefore I shall make it my whole aim and desire to extricate her and liberate her from this exile, in order to return her ‘to her Father’s house as in her youth,’ before she was clothed in my body, when she was absorbed in His light, blessed be He, and completely united with Him. Now she will again be thus absorbed and united with Him, blessed be He, if I will bend my whole aim toward the Torah and the commandments, to clothe therein all her ten faculties, as mentioned above, especially in the precept of prayer, to cry to the L–rd in her distress of exile in my despicable body, to liberate her from her prison, that she may attach herself to Him, blessed be He.” This is the essence of “repentance and good deeds,” the latter being the good deeds which one performs in order to restore the portion of the L–rd to the Source and Root of all the worlds. And this shall be his service all his life in great joy, the joy of the soul in her release from the despised body and “returning to her Father’s house as in her youth,” when engaged in Torah and prayer. Indeed, the Rabbis, of blessed memory, have said that one should be in a state of repentance throughout one’s life.

Shem MiShmuel, Yom Kippur

Shem MiShmuel, Yom Kippur

Shem MiShmuel presents Yom Kippur as a return to the inner root of the soul, in which external layers and habits that obscure holiness are cast off. This offers a chassidic framework for reading vidui as truthful disentangling from what has obscured the God-relationship.

Likutei Moharan 6:2

Likutei Moharan 6:2

Rabbi Nachman links confession before a Torah scholar with the repair of spiritual damage and the restoration of the person’s connection to holiness. The passage treats disclosure and confession as a means of removing spiritual blockage and returning the person to a living relationship with God.

For <the meaning of> ehyeh is “I am prepared to be.” That is, before repenting a person does not yet have being. It is as if he does not yet exist in the world. Indeed, he would be better off had he not been created (Eruvin 13b). But when he prepares to purify himself and repent, he is then in the aspect of ehyeh. In other words, he will then exist in the world—i.e., “I am prepared to be.” This is an aspect of Keter, because the word keter suggests waiting, <which is> an aspect of repentance. As our Sages taught: Anyone who undertakes to purify himself is assisted [from Above]. It is like the allegory of the person who comes to buy sweet smelling oil. They tell him, “Wait…” (Yoma 38b). This corresponds to KeTeR, as is written (Job 36:2), “KaTaR (wait) for me awhile and I will tell you.” Before repentance, however, the aspect of ehyeh is hidden from him. For he has not yet prepared himself to exist in the world. And the hidden face of Ehyeh —<i.e., the achoraim of the Holy Name Ehyeh>—has the same numerical value as dam (blood)—i.e., spilt blood and scorn, as is written (1 Samuel 2:30), “[For I honor those who honor Me,] but those who scorn Me will be dishonored.” The blood which is in the left hollow of the heart—the abode of the evil inclination, as is written (Ecclesiastes 10:2), “but a fool’s heart inclines to his left”—still retains its strength and power. This is the reason he is subjected to ridicule and spilt blood. They are the aspect of a hidden and turned face of Ehyeh, which has the same numerical value as dam.

Likutei Moharan 112

Likutei Moharan 112:3

Rabbi Nachman teaches that a person must search for and find the good point within himself, even when overwhelmed by wrongdoing. This complements a “peeling away” model of vidui: confession rejects the false or obstructing layers without defining the person’s essential identity as sin.

3. The essential point is that when one is sunk in the worst attack of darkness and the evil force, and he is hemmed in and closed up within the thickest darkness which surrounds and encircles him round and round on every side, Heaven forefend, and he has no opening, rectification or solution to depart from the darkness—in that case, the best advice for him is to draw himself to the truth. He should look to the genuine truth and search only for the real truth. Against this there is no darkness or encirclement that can make it dark for him. For truth is God Himself. Thus, he is in the category of “God is my light.” And because God is his light, there is no darkness that can make it dark for him. He will surely merit to see the openings from which to depart the darkness, as in, “The opening of Your words illuminates, making the simpleminded understand.” Understand this well. Now, the main thing is: In his prayers, supplications and requests—even if he finds it impossible to recite any word of prayer and supplication because of the intense darkness and confusion which surrounds him very, very much from every side—he should still try to at least say what he says with truth, no matter how low its level. Thus, for example, he should say, “God help me!” with truth, even if he cannot say it with the appropriate fervor and arousal. He should nevertheless say the words as truthfully as he can.

Tanya, Iggeret HaTeshuvah 11

Tanya, Part III; Iggeret HaTeshuvah 11:12

The conclusion presents teshuvah as a return to God with joy and renewed vitality, after the necessary work of confronting and correcting sin. The underlying model is not permanent identification with failure but the removal of alienating layers so the person can resume intimate divine service.

“My sin is before me always” does not imply that one ought constantly to be melancholy, humiliated, G–d forbid, for a following verse declares, “Let me hear gladness and joy…and the free spirit shall uphold me….” He ought all his days experience teshuvah ilaah, which is marked by great joy, as we noted above. “Before me” is the term negdi, as in “Stand mineged,” and “Mineged around the Tent of Assembly shall they camp.” Rashi defines the term as “at a distance.” The intention of our verse is merely that his heart does not become haughty, that he be of humble spirit before all men, for the remembrance is between his eyes that he has sinned before G–d.

Peninei Halakhah, Days of Awe 6:11

Peninei Halakhah, Days of Awe 6:11

Through repentance, a person liberates his soul from the chains of evil inclinations that enslave him, freeing his true inner self to express itself and actualize the divine ideals for which his soul longs.

Repentance frees a person from the chains that bind him, allowing his soul to express itself freely. For repentance is a striving for divine freedom and liberation that is free from any enslavement (Orot Ha-teshuva 5:5 and 7:4). In the natural way of things, a person follows his evil inclinations – pursuing lust and arrogance, anger and jealousy, sloth and fame – because they offer him quick gratification. Once he starts being drawn to them, he becomes enslaved to them. True, his inner self still longs for truth and goodness, but it is very difficult for him to actualize them, because he is already addicted to fulfilling his urges. His soul is chained and made to suffer. By repenting, one is liberated, one can express his true desires. The soul is freed from the bonds of the evil inclination and begins to illuminate his path. His life force is strengthened. This is what our Sages mean when they say, “The only free person is one who studies Torah” (Avot 6:2). For the Torah guides a person on the true and right path. Through it, one can actualize all his positive aspirations: the divine ideals for which his soul longs.

Esh Kodesh, Yom Kippur

Esh Kodesh, Jewish Year 5700, Shabbat Teshuva

The Piaseczner Rebbe’s Yom Kippur teachings describe avodah as honest confrontation with inner brokenness while refusing to surrender the soul’s relationship with God. This makes vidui a courageous unveiling of what obstructs attachment, directed toward renewed closeness rather than self-condemnation alone.

The Maharal explains that confessing a sin completely sacrifices the evil inclination because when a person admits their transgression they surrender themselves entirely to God, similar to how confession means yielding oneself to the one wronged; through this act the evil inclination is entirely removed since it has no connection to God, whereas without such confession a person might return to the sin, but through confession of "I have sinned before God" one surrenders oneself to God entirely and thereby completely removes the evil inclination from oneself.

Peninei Halakhah, Days of Awe 6:6

Peninei Halakhah, Days of Awe 6:6

Fasting on Yom Kippur allows the soul to disconnect from physical desires and materiality that obscure its true noble aspirations, enabling the soul's authentic desire to cleave to God to emerge freely; through this profound reconnection to the root of the soul, sins fall away, leading to a deeper repentance rooted in the realization of one's true purpose rather than mere regret.

In fact, however, fasting discloses something deeper. Throughout the year, the soul is enveloped by a cloak of physicality, of various bodily desires, which make people forget their inner aspirations and sin. God commanded us to fast on Yom Kippur so that our soul can disconnect itself somewhat from the bonds of the body and materiality, thus allowing its true, noble aspirations to be free and to express themselves. Through this sublime connection to the root of our souls, our sins fall away and are cast into Azazel (Derekh Hashem 4:8:5). True, fasting and the other deprivations make it harder for us to focus. However, they allow us to come to the profound realization that our true desire is to cling to God. Deep down, we want to improve the world by following the Torah’s instructions and living by its light. This leads to a higher quality of repentance, each person on his own level.
