עקידת יצחק
Akeidat Yitzchak 59:3
Q — On the Mishkan's day of joy, why does fire consume Nadav and Avihu? Why such severity for "אש זרה" they were not commanded to bring? Why Moshe's words "בקרבי אקדש"?
A — "Through those near to Me I am sanctified" — precisely from those closest to God an extra exactness is demanded, and in their accountability His Name is hallowed. The sons' offering, however well-intended, was uncommanded, and at the threshold of the Shechinah's indwelling even a small deviation in the most elevated souls is consequential. Their fall, on the day of consecration, taught Israel that nearness to the Divine raises the standard rather than relaxing it, and that holiness is sanctified through the precision of its closest servants.
