Hardships as Prerequisites for Torah, Land, and World to Come

These sources explore why hardships are necessary to acquire three fundamental spiritual gifts: Torah, Eretz Yisrael, and Olam Haba. They explain that afflictions serve to purify and elevate the body and soul beyond their natural capacity, enabling one to merit these transcendent blessings that would otherwise remain inaccessible.

What the sources say

The foundational source is the Gemara (Berakhot 5a), where Rabbi Shimon ben Yochai teaches that the Holy One gave Israel three precious gifts — Torah, Eretz Yisrael, and Olam Haba — and all three were given only by means of hardship, deriving each from a pasuk: Torah from Tehillim 94:12, "Happy is the man whom You afflict, O Lord, and whom You teach from Your Torah"; Eretz Yisrael from the rebuke-of-a-father imagery in Devarim 8:5, followed immediately by the verse of entry into the good land; and Olam Haba from the verse connecting the path of life with correction and discipline.

The same teaching appears in the Mekhilta DeRabbi Yishmael (Tractate Bachodesh 10:10), which frames it with the added observation that these three gifts are ones the nations of the world desire but were not given to them — precisely because hardship is the vehicle through which they are transmitted.

The underlying rationale for why hardship is the necessary vehicle is spelled out by the Malbim (Devarim 8:2), who explains that to attain what the soul requires, hardships are needed to subdue the forces of matter so that the spiritual can prevail over the physical — and he reads the forty years in the wilderness as a deliberate design: Israel first needed prolonged suffering in the desert both to internalize the Torah they had received and to be made ready for the holiness and closeness to God they would achieve upon entering the land.

Ein Aya (Berakhot 1:32) deepens this further, explaining that to merit a level that is beyond and above nature, the bodily powers — which are natural — are not prepared for it except through hardship; the suffering is thus the mechanism of refinement that makes the supernal gift possible in the first place.

The Ramban (Devarim 8:5) adds the appreciation dimension explicitly, reading the father-son rebuke of the wilderness years as designed so that the goodness of the land and its fruits would be sweet and desirable to the soul — the prior deprivation is what makes the gift felt as a gift; and Ein Aya (Berakhot 2:51) extends this logic to Torah study specifically, noting that one who toils in Torah beyond what is comfortable gains the twofold benefit of perfecting the soul and also acquiring the beloved quality of hardship-refinement.

Deuteronomy 8:2-5

Deuteronomy 8:2-5

Moshe explains that the wilderness hardships tested and disciplined Israel, teaching dependence on God and obedience; the passage compares this process to a parent disciplining a child. It provides a foundational biblical model for suffering as formative preparation for entering the Land.

Remember the long way that the ETERNAL your God has made you travel in the wilderness these past forty years, in order to test you by hardships to learn what was in your hearts: whether you would keep the commandments or not. [God] subjected you to the hardship of hunger and then gave you manna to eat, which neither you nor your ancestors had ever known, in order to teach you that a human being does not live on bread alone, but that one may live on anything that GOD decrees. Bear in mind that the ETERNAL your God disciplines you just as a man disciplines his son.

Proverbs 3:11-12

Proverbs 3:11-12

The verse counsels against rejecting divine discipline, comparing it to a father’s loving correction of a beloved child. This is a central biblical source for understanding hardship as an expression of providential formation.

Do not reject GOD’s discipline, my son; Do not abhor such rebuke. For whom GOD loves, [God] rebukes, As a father the son whom he favors.

Psalms 94:12-13

Psalms 94:12-13

The psalm blesses the person whom God disciplines, explaining that such instruction can teach Torah and prepare a person for tranquility after adversity. The verses frame יסורין as educational rather than merely punitive.

Isaiah 48:10

Israel’s trials are described through the metaphor of refining silver in a furnace. The image supports the idea that hardship purifies and prepares a person or nation for a more worthy spiritual state.

See, I refine you, but not as silver; I test you in the furnace of affliction.

Berakhot 5a

Berakhot 5a:20

The sugya presents three gifts—Torah, the Land of Israel, and the World to Come—as acquired through יסורין, deriving the teaching from verses. It also distinguishes afflictions that are accepted with love and lead to Torah or reward from suffering that prevents Torah and service.

Additionally, it was taught in a baraita with regard to affliction: Rabbi Shimon ben Yoḥai says: The Holy One, Blessed be He, gave Israel three precious gifts, all of which were given only by means of suffering, which purified Israel so that they may merit to receive them. These gifts are: Torah, Eretz Yisrael, and the World-to-Come. From where is it derived that Torah is only acquired by means of suffering? As it is said: “Happy is the man whom You afflict, Lord,” after which it is said: “And teach from Your Torah.” Eretz Yisrael, as it is written: “As a man rebukes his son, so the Lord your God rebukes you” (Deuteronomy 8:5), and it is written thereafter: “For the Lord your God will bring you to a good land” (Deuteronomy 8:7). The World-to-Come, as it is written: “For the mitzva is a lamp, the Torah is light, and the reproofs of instruction are the way of life” (Proverbs 6:23). One may arrive at the lamp of mitzva and the light of Torah that exists in the World-to-Come only by means of the reproofs of instruction in this world.

Pirkei Avot 6:6

The Mishnah states that Torah is acquired through a demanding set of qualities, including limitation of comfort, persistence, and acceptance of difficulty. It is a classic source for the claim that hardship is a prerequisite for Torah acquisition, though it speaks of disciplined effort as well as involuntary suffering.

Taanit 8a

Taanit 8a:17

The Gemara teaches that one who rejoices in suffering, accepts it, and does not kick against divine judgment can merit deliverance. The passage supports the idea that the spiritual response to hardship can transform its significance, while not necessarily making suffering an absolute prerequisite.

Reish Lakish said that this principle is derived from here: “You took him away who joyfully performed righteousness, those who remembered You in Your ways, behold You were wroth, and we sinned, upon them have we stayed of old, that we might be saved” (Isaiah 64:4). This verse also teaches that God displays wrath specifically due to the transgressions of those who are accustomed to acting righteously. Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi said concerning the same verse: Whoever is joyful in the suffering that comes upon him brings salvation to the world [olam], as it is stated: “Upon them have we stayed of old [olam], that we might be saved.”

Ketubot 111a

Ketubot 111a:20

Rabbi Yirmeya bar Abba transmits from Rabbi Yoḥanan that walking four cubits in Eretz Yisrael assures one a place in Olam Haba, and when a dispute arises over how righteous people outside Eretz Yisrael will be resurrected, Rabbi Ile'a proposes rolling but Rabbi Abba Salla Rava objects that rolling constitutes suffering for the righteous, while Abaye suggests underground tunnels as an alternative.

With regard to the aforementioned verse “And spirit to they who walk there” (Isaiah 42:5), Rabbi Yirmeya bar Abba said that Rabbi Yoḥanan said: Anyone who walks four cubits in Eretz Yisrael is assured of a place in the World-to-Come. The Gemara asks: And according to the opinion of Rabbi Elazar, will the righteous outside of Eretz Yisrael not come alive at the time of the resurrection of the dead? Rabbi Ile’a said: They will be resurrected by means of rolling, i.e., they will roll until they reach Eretz Yisrael, where they will be brought back to life. Rabbi Abba Salla Rava strongly objects to this: Rolling is an ordeal that entails suffering for the righteous. Abaye said: Tunnels are prepared for them in the ground, through which they pass to Eretz Yisrael.

Nedarim 81a

Nedarim 81a:2

The Gemara links the decline of Torah scholars to their failure to make themselves humble and enduring like the dust, in the context of Torah transmission and labor. It is relevant to the idea that Torah requires self-abnegating effort, although it is not a direct statement about all suffering.

§ With regard to this issue, the Gemara relates that the Sages sent the following message from there, i.e., Eretz Yisrael, to Babylonia: Be careful with regard to grime, as it can lead to disease and sickness. Be careful to learn Torah in the company of others, rather than study it alone. And be careful with regard to the education of the sons of paupers, as it is from them that the Torah will issue forth. As it is stated: “Water shall flow from his branches [midalyav]” (Numbers 24:7), which is expounded to mean: From the poor ones [midalim] among him, as it is from them that the Torah, which may be compared to water, will issue forth. With regard to a similar matter, the Gemara inquires: And for what reason is it not common for Torah scholars to give rise to Torah scholars from among their sons? Why are Torah scholars generally born to paupers, who are not Torah scholars themselves? Rav Yosef said: This is so that they should not say the Torah is their inheritance. Therefore, it is unusual to find that all the sons of a Torah scholar are also Torah scholars. Rav Sheshet, son of Rav Idi, said: This is so that they should not be presumptuous [yitgadderu] toward the community, with the knowledge that they will be Torah scholars like their fathers. Mar Zutra said: Because they take advantage of their fathers’ standing to lord over the community and are punished for their conduct. Rav Ashi said: Because they call ordinary people donkeys.

Ramban on Deuteronomy 8:5

Q — How does "כאשר ייסר איש את בנו" function in the flow of the parsha? Ibn Ezra reads it as a parenthetical aside: keep mitzvot DESPITE the desert hardships — the yissurim are a distraction to be ignored, and the schar of keeping mitzvot is entering ארץ ישראל. But the surrounding verses then describe the bounty of the Land — why?

A — Ramban: the yissurim of the midbar are not a marginal distraction but the very PURPOSE — "ה' אלהיך מיסרך... The desert's deprivation was designed to make the goodness of Eretz Yisrael sweet to Israel's palate when they entered. The yissurim are pedagogical preparation for the Land, not an obstacle to be endured around.

Sefer Chasidim 529

Sefer Chasidim 529

The passage states that sufferings of love are great because the world benefited more from Rabbi Shimon bar Rabbi Elazar during the years he suffered afflictions than from all his other merits, and similarly regarding our teacher the holy one; these sufferings of love are greater than all else, such that the world's enjoyment from righteous people is credited to them as if they performed the good deed themselves, while conversely the wicked who cause harm are blamed as if they did so with their own hands—and even though sufferings of love are great, since they come only from divine will, if they would cause one to cease from learning, writing, or prayer, one must request mercy that they not do so, as exemplified by Rabbi Elazar bar Rabbi Shimon.

Rabbeinu Yonah discusses awakening to repentance through suffering and other forms of divine rebuke. Hardship can therefore function as an invitation to self-examination and moral return, rather than as an end in itself.

Sha'arei Teshuvah 4:16-17

Rabbeinu Yonah lists suffering among circumstances that can prompt repentance, humility, and correction. The focus is ethical transformation: hardship is valuable when it leads a person to change, not simply because pain has intrinsic worth.

And about that which they, may their memory be blessed, said (Yoma 86a) about [sins that warrant] excision or a death penalty from the court, “repenatance and Yom Kippur suspend [the punishment], and afflictions absolve” - there is a question: And is it not written (Leviticus 16:30), “of all your sins; you shall be pure before the Lord?” And the answer to this is that, that which is stated, “you shall be pure before the Lord,” is a positive commandment to repent - that we search our ways and investigate [them] and return to the Lord on Yom Kippur. And even though we have been obligated about this at all times, this obligation is added on Yom Kippur. And the purification that is in our hands is repentance and refinement of [our] deeds. But that which is written (earlier in Leviticus 16:30), “For on this day shall atonement be made for you, to purify you” - which is written about the purification that God, may He be blessed, is to purify us from iniquity and atone for us [with] a complete atonement on Yom Kippur without afflictions - is stated about [simple] negative commandments. But regarding [sins that warrant] excision or a death penalty from the court, repenatance and Yom Kippur [only] suspend [the punishment], and afflictions absolve.

Duties of the Heart, Fourth Treatise on Trust 4:21

Rabbeinu Bachya develops bitachon and explains how apparent adversity must be understood within divine providence and the soul’s true good. The treatise supplies a systematic framework for accepting hardship without assuming that every pain is immediately intelligible.

For the first category, matters of the body alone, these are: his life and death, his income for obtaining food, clothing and shelter, his health and illness, his traits. The proper way of trust in the A-lmighty for all of these matters is to submit oneself to the course the Creator has decreed for him in these matters, and to place one's trust in G-d and to know that none of these matters can come to be unless it was previously determined by G-d that this would be the most proper situation for his matter in this world and in Olam Haba (the afterlife), and ultimately the greatest good for him (even if right now it appears to his eye to be not good, certainly, it is the best thing for him for his ultimate end - PL), and that the Creator has exclusive, total control over all of these matters. In none of them can any created being advise any plan, or exercise any control except through His permission, decree, and judgment.

Malbim on Deuteronomy 8:2

Malbim on Deuteronomy 8:2

The passage explains that the forty years in the wilderness served two purposes: to diminish the power of physical matter through hardship (as in "to humble you"), and to elevate the soul's powers through constant miracles (as in "to test you" regarding elevation); through this dual process one comes to know what is truly in one's heart—distinguishing between the inclination toward good and the inclination toward evil, both rooted in the soul and physical matter respectively—and the passage draws a distinction between examination (testing what something is) and trial (discovering new potential capacities), with the wilderness journey as a trial meant to elevate the soul's power so that one guards the commandments, from which it follows that achieving greater perfection requires additional effort and many commandments.

Derekh Hashem, Part One 2:2

Derekh Hashem, Part One, On Mankind 2:2

Ramchal explains that God created human beings to earn perfection through their own effort, so that the resulting goodness would be deserved rather than gratuitous. This is a direct philosophical explanation for why spiritual goods are acquired through struggle.

The choice of man: We have already mentioned man's being that creature created to cleave to Him, may He be blessed, that he is put between perfection and deficiencies and that he has the ability to acquire perfection. However this needs to be with his choice and will. For if he were forced in his actions to choose perfection no matter what, he would not truthfully be called the master of his perfection; as since he is forced to acquire [it] by another, he is not its master. [Rather] it is the one who makes him acquire it that is the master of his perfection. So [God's] intention would not have been fulfilled. Therefore it was necessary that the matter be left to his choice, such that his inclination to the two sides be equal, and not forced to one of them; so he would have the capability to choose - with intellect and with will - which one of them he would want. And [he must] also have the ability to acquire whichever one of them he wants. Therefore man was created with a good impulse and a bad impulse so that the choice is his, to incline himself to the side that he wants. The joining of the body and the soul: However in order for this matter to be accomplished appropriately, the Supreme Wisdom decreed that man be composed of two opposites - meaning to say, from a spiritual and pure soul and from an earthly body. And since each one of them naturally inclines to its side - meaning to say, the body towards physicality and the soul towards spirituality - it comes out that there is a war between them in such a way that if the soul wins, it will raise the body with it; but if man allows the physical to win in him, the body will surely be lowered and the soul will be lowered with it. And that man will not be fit for perfection, and will be pushed away from it, God forbid. But that man [still] has the ability to humble his physical [side] before his spiritual [side] and soul and acquire his perfection, as I have written. The outgrowths of the sin of the first man: But once he sinned, a great change happened to things. And that is that at first there were surely sufficient deficiencies in the creation that the first man would be in the equal condition that we mentioned, so there would be room for him to earn perfections through the 'effort of his [own] hands.' With his sin, however, deficiencies were added; and they grew in the essence of man and in all of the entire creation. Moreover the redress became more difficult than before. The explanation of this is that surely at the beginning it was easy for [man] to go away from the deficiency planted in him and to acquire perfection. For the Supreme Wisdom set up the things like this according to the traits of good and fairness. And since man was not the cause of the evil and the deficiency within him - but it was rather planted in him in his creation - when he removed himself from the evil and turned to the good, he was surely immediately able to go away from deficiency and acquire perfection. However with his sin - since it was through him that perfection became more hidden than it was and the deficiencies grew, and he was the one that caused evil to himself - it would no longer be as easy for him to return and to go away from deficiency and acquire perfection as it was at the time that he was not the cause of his deficiency, but was rather [just] created like that from his beginning, as I have written. All the more so [would it be harder], as the striving required of him now to reach perfection would perforce be doubled: For he would first need that man and the world return to the condition that existed at the beginning before the sin; and then afterwards to rise above that condition to a condition of perfection to which it was fit for man to rise.

Mesillat Yesharim 1

Mesillat Yesharim 1:2

Ramchal presents the purpose of human life as preparation for and enjoyment of closeness to God in the World to Come, with this world serving as the arena of effort and spiritual acquisition. The chapter gives the conceptual backdrop for why reward is linked to toil rather than free enjoyment.

Behold, what our sages, of blessed memory, have taught us is that man was created solely to delight in G-d and to derive pleasure in the radiance of the Shechina (divine presence). For this is the true delight and the greatest pleasure that can possibly exist. The place of this pleasure is, in truth, in Olam Haba (the World to Come). For it was created expressly for this purpose. The means that lead a person to this goal are the commandments which the blessed G-d commanded to us. The place of the performance of these commandments is only in this world. Therefore, man was first placed in this world so that through these means prepared for him here, he will be able to reach the place prepared for him, namely, the World to Come, there to be sated with the good which he acquired through these means. This is what our sages of blessed memory said "today to do them, and tomorrow to receive their reward" (Eruvin 22:1). For a person to attain this good, it is proper that he first exert himself strenuously to acquire it, namely, to exert himself to cling to the blessed G-d through the power of deeds whose consequence is this end. These deeds are the commandments.

Netivot Olam, Netiv Hayisurin 1:1

Netivot Olam, Netiv Hayisurin 1:1

One who engages in Torah study becomes free from hardships, as the Gemara in Brakhot teaches that hardships depart from those occupied with Torah; since Torah is called a bird flying in the heavens and represents completeness that transcends deficiency, Torah elevates the person beyond the dominion of hardship.

Shem MiShmuel, Masei 5

The Midrash on Shemot teaches that the Holy One gave Israel three precious gifts—Torah, Eretz Yisrael, and Olam Haba—and granted all three only by means of hardships, with scriptural support: Torah through "Happy is the man whom You discipline, O Lord, and teach from Your Torah"; Eretz Yisrael through "Know in your heart that as a man disciplines his son" followed by "for the Lord your God brings you"; and Olam Haba through "For a commandment is a lamp and Torah is light and the way of life is rebuke and discipline.

Sefat Emet, Deuteronomy, Eikev:24

The Sefat Emet’s teaching on the wilderness and Ekev develops the idea that Israel’s deprivation and testing prepare the inner capacity to receive Torah and divine gifts. The hardship is portrayed as a vessel-building process, not merely punishment.

Tanya, Part I; Likkutei Amarim 26:5

The Alter Rebbe teaches that sadness and heaviness are overcome by contemplating the purpose and hidden good of suffering, and by recognizing that adversity can humble the ego and enable deeper divine service. The chapter is a Hasidic treatment of how hardship can be converted into spiritual vitality.

The following is sound counsel as to how to cleanse one’s heart of all sadness and of every trace of worry about mundane matters, even about children, health, and sustenance. Everyone is familiar with the statement of the Rabbis that “Just as one must recite a blessing for the good, [one must also recite a blessing for misfortune].” In the Gemara it is explained that one should accept [misfortune] with joy, like the joy of a visible and obvious benefit, for “this is also for the good,” except that it is not apparent and visible to mortal eyes because it stems from the “hidden world” which is higher than the “revealed world,” the latter emanating from the letters vav and hey of the Name of Havaya, whereas the “hidden world” represents the letters yud and hey. Hence the meaning of the verse, “Fortunate is the man whom You chastise, O L–rd.” Therefore, the rabbis, of blessed memory, commented that it is to those who rejoice in their afflictions that the verse refers: “But they that love Him shall be as the sun going forth in its might.” For this is the joy of desiring the nearness of G–d more than anything in the life of this world, as is written, “For Your kindness is better than life…,” and the nearness of G–d is infinitely stronger and more sublime in the “hidden world,” for “The concealment of His strength is there,” and “The Most High abides in secrecy.” Therefore, [the man who accepts affliction with joy] merits [to see] the “sun going forth in its might”—in the World to Come, i.e., the sun emerging from its sheath in which it is enclosed in this world. But in the World to Come it will appear out of its covering, meaning that then the “hidden world” will be revealed and will shine and send forth light in a great and intense revelation to those who had taken refuge in Him in this world and had taken shelter under His “shadow”—the shadow of wisdom (chochmah), i.e., in the sense of “shade” as differing from light and revealed goodness. Suffice it for him who understands.

Tanya, Part I; Likkutei Amarim 27:8

The Alter Rebbe reframes inner struggle and recurring temptation as opportunities for the person to fulfill the purpose of spiritual combat. Even when the struggle does not disappear, it can generate a distinctive form of divine pleasure and accomplishment.

For there are two kinds of gratification before Him, blessed be He: one, from the complete annihilation of the sitra achara and the conversion of bitter to sweet and of darkness to light by the tzaddikim; the second, when the sitra achara is subdued while it is still at its strongest and most powerful and soars like an eagle, whence the L–rd brings her down through the effort of the benonim below. This is indicated in the verse, “And make me delicacies such as I love.” The word mataamim (delicacies) is in the plural to indicate two kinds of gratification, and the words are those of the Shechinah to her children, the community of Israel, as explained in the Tikkunim. The analogy is to material food, where there are two kinds of relishes: one of sweet and luscious foods, and the other of tart or sour articles of food which have been well spiced and garnished so that they are made into delicacies which revive the soul.

Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai teaches that the Holy One gave Israel three good gifts—Torah, Eretz Yisrael, and Olam Haba—and bestowed none of them except through hardships, because to merit a level that transcends nature requires that the body's natural powers be refined through hardships.

Ein Aya, Berakhot 1:35

The passage explains that hardships are not something to despise but rather serve the purpose of purifying and elevating one toward higher spiritual levels beyond one's natural capacity, which constitutes a good reward from God; however, the truly righteous servants of God desire no elevation or advantage whatsoever and seek only to serve God through their labor in Torah, since that itself is the service of God.

Hardships are cherished because their purpose is to purify and elevate the body toward perfection, so when Rabbi Yochanan reflected on the merit of the refined body with which he was blessed, he was told that hardships are cherished in order to purify his body to the utmost degree.

Ein Aya, Berakhot 2:51

Ein Aya, Berakhot 2:51

Blessed is one whose hardships come through Torah study, since hardship itself is beneficial to a person and brings him to perfection; whoever labors in Torah thereby receives his afflictions through Torah in accordance with the teaching "happy is the man whom You discipline, O God, and teach from Your Torah," and since every person necessarily experiences some hardship (pain, illness, etc.), it is especially fortunate when one's hardships come by way of toiling in Torah study beyond his usual habit and forgoing rest, which benefits him in that it adds to his spiritual perfection while also gaining the advantage of hardship—which is precious.

Ein Aya, Berakhot 1:28

Ein Aya, Berakhot 1:28

Hardships that God brings upon one who can study Torah but does not do so are meant to be unpleasant and disruptive, driving him to Torah; these differ from hardships that refine character traits, since when Torah study is available as a means to strengthen goodness, painful hardships that worsen one's dispositions are instead inflicted to redirect him toward Torah—where he will find all goodness of character—and where the hardships themselves will cease.

The passage explains that sufferings of love are difficult to understand but occur when a righteous person has some material impurity preventing him from reaching a higher spiritual level; such sufferings purify the soul and remove material deficiency until he becomes worthy of cleaving to God, which is why they are called sufferings of love—because God loves him and desires to draw him near by refining away his material impurities.
