The Shin on Head Tefillin: Three and Four Branches

Sources explain the halakhic requirement for the letter shin embossed on the head tefillin, including the traditional forms with three branches on the right and four branches on the left. The sources trace this practice from biblical command through Talmudic principle to later practical codification.

What the sources say

The foundational source for the shin on the head-tefillin is the Gemara in Menachot 35a, which records that the requirement to have a shin protruding from the leather of the head-tefillin is a halakha transmitted to Moshe from Sinai — placing it among the most authoritative categories of rabbinic law.

Mishneh Torah, Tefillin 3:1 likewise codifies the requirement that the leather of the head-tefillin bear the form of a shin on its right and on its left, and Shulchan Arukh, Orach Chayim 32:42 specifies that the shin on the wearer's right has three branches while the shin on the wearer's left has four branches, adding in the name of the Rema that if they were switched the tefillin are nonetheless not invalidated.

מדרשים, מדרש ר"ע על התגין offers a symbolic reading of the two forms: the three-branched shin corresponds to the two tefillin and the mezuzah, while the four-branched shin corresponds to the four fringes of tzitzit, and together the seven branches allude to the seven heavens.

Sha'ar HaKavanot, Sermons on Tefillin provides a kabbalistic account, explaining that the two shins — one of three branches and one of four — correspond to two aspects of the divine intellect (mochin): the four aspects of the mochin as they are in themselves, and the three aspects that emerge when those same mochin become clothed within the channels of Imma, so that the total of seven branches reflects the complete structure of the spiritual reality the tefillin embody.

Har Tzvi (OC 28) records an additional reason in the name of the Beit Yosef: the four-branched shin corresponds to the shin on the Tablets of the Law, whose letters were formed from hollow spaces rather than filled strokes, and accordingly a four-branched shin contains three such hollow spaces so that the letter is constituted by those air-spaces — making the tefillin shin a visual echo of the engraving on the Tablets.

Teshuvos V'hanhagos (4:14) addresses the broader significance of the shin on the head-tefillin by explaining that, according to Rashi's view, the divine name Shin-Dalet-Yud is distributed across the tefillin as a whole — the shin appearing in the compartment of the head-box itself, the dalet in the knot of the head-strap, and the yud in the knot of the hand-tefillin — so that this configuration of the divine name constitutes the essential substance of the tefillin obligation, with the straps serving only as accessories to holiness since they do not bear the letter shin.

The precise craftsmanship of each shin is further regulated by Mishnah Berurah 32:198, which records a dispute among later authorities about whether the yud-shaped branches of the right and left shins must each touch the base of the shin, and concludes that the majority of later authorities require this contact as an indispensable condition even after the fact.

Menachot 35a

מנחות ל״ה א — ד"ה וְאָמַר רַב חֲנַנְאֵל

Menachot 35a:3

The Talmud discusses the halakhic structure of tefillin, including the requirement that the head tefillin have the letter ש embossed on it. This is the central Chazal source for the shin on the shel rosh.

§ And Rav Ḥananel says that Rav says: The requirement to have the titora of phylacteries, i.e., the base of phylacteries upon which the compartments rest, is a halakha transmitted to Moses from Sinai. Abaye said: The requirement to have the ma’ebarta of phylacteries, i.e., the passageway through which the straps are inserted, is a halakha transmitted to Moses from Sinai. And Abaye says: The requirement to have a letter shin protruding on the phylacteries of one’s head, which is achieved by pressing the hide into the shape of that letter, is a halakha transmitted to Moses from Sinai.

שולחן ערוך, אורח חיים ל״ב — ד"ה שי"ן של תפילין הלכה למשה מסיני

Shulchan Arukh, Orach Chayim 32:42

The Shulchan Arukh records the practical requirement for the shin on the head tefillin and the accepted forms of its construction. This is the governing halakhic locus for the visible shin.

The "ש" of the tefillin, it is a law passed down to Moshe from Sinai that he should make in the leather of the compartments [of the tefillin] of the head like the letter "ש" extruding from the creases of the leather, one on its right [side] and one on its left. On the right side of the wearer (ie. the right side of the tefillin box from the perspective of the one wearing it), one places [a "ש"] of three "heads", and on the left side of the wearer, one places [a "ש"] of four "heads". Rema: However, if they were switched it does not invalidate. (Mordechi and SMa"G and Tosefot - Perek Hakometz)

Teshuvos V'hanhagos 4:14

According to Rashi's view, the tefillin of the head must contain the divine name composed of the letters shin, dalet, and yud—the shin appearing in the compartment of the head-box itself, the dalet in the head-strap knot, and the yud in the hand-tefillin knot—such that this configuration of the name is the essential substance of the tefillin mitzvah, whereas the straps themselves are only accessories to holiness since they do not bear the letter shin.

The Beit Yosef, citing the Gadol and Smag, states that the four-branched shin on tefillin corresponds to the inscription on the Tablets of the Law, whose letters were engraved from hollow spaces (such that the letter appears as empty air); accordingly, tefillin are made with a shin resembling the one on the Tablets, and a four-branched shin contains three hollow spaces so that the shin is formed from those air-spaces.
