Rashi on Numbers 8:2

OVER AGAINST THE CANDLESTICK — i.e. over against the central lamp which is not on one of the branches, like the others, but on the body (the central shaft) of the candelabrum itself (cf. Menachot 98b). SHALL THE SEVEN LAMPS GIVE LIGHT — the seven lamps: this central lamp itself which naturally gave light over against the shaft (the פני המנורה) and the six lamps which were on the six branches, viz., the three on the east side of the central shaft should have their wicks turned towards the central one, and similarly the three on the west should have the ends of their wicks turned towards the central one (cf. Sifrei Bamidbar 59). And why was this? In order that people should not say: He (God) is in need of its (the candlestick’s) light (cf. Midrash Tanchuma, Beha'alotcha 5).

Be'er HaGolah, Introduction to Be'er HaGolah

In introducing the nature of Torah wisdom, the Maharal draws on the symbolism of the Menorah as a metaphor for the illuminating power of Torah. Just as the Menorah's seven branches all draw from a single source of oil, all branches of wisdom draw from the one divine Torah.

They compare themselves to the ancients and say that they too have insight, and the former days are no better than these, because the wisdom that the Creator implanted comes from one source, as the individuals of the species are one.

The Menorah as Symbol of Shabbat

Jewish sources interpret the seven-branched menorah's structure—a central shaft with three branches on each side—as representing Shabbat at the center of the week, surrounded by the six weekdays. This symbolism draws from the creation narrative, rabbinic homilies, and Hasidic commentary on the menorah's spiritual significance.

Unity in Sacred Vessels: One Solid Piece

The Torah requires the Menorah, Kapores, and Chatzotzros to be crafted from a single piece of metal rather than assembled from separate parts. Jewish sources interpret this unified construction as symbolizing the interconnectedness of Israel's divine service, spiritual wholeness, and the centrality of Torah in collective worship.

The Manna and Daily Trust in Divine Providence

Chassidic and classical sources interpret the daily falling of manna in the wilderness as a spiritual lesson in bitachon (trust in God). The sources show how the manna's ephemeral nature—rotting if hoarded, falling only for each day's need—teaches that true reliance on divine providence requires constant renewal of one's connection to God rather than dependence on past spiritual or material sustenance.

The Shofar and Divine Kingship in Hasidic Teaching

Rosh HashanahSukkot

The Alter Rebbe's Likkutei Torah discourses explore the shofar's spiritual significance on Rosh Hashanah as a means of awakening the soul's deepest dimensions and proclaiming divine kingship. These teachings connect the shofar's sound to Israel's submission to Heaven and frame the festival season as a progression from Rosh Hashanah's coronation of God to Sukkot's expression of joy within divine encompassing presence.
