Satan and Abraham in Midrashic Interpretation

These midrashic and talmudic sources portray Satan as an adversary who challenges Abraham's devotion during the Akedah, testing the authenticity of his faith through accusations and obstacles. The sources collectively explore how Satan's role frames Abraham's trial as a demonstration of unwavering faithfulness to God.

What the sources say

The midrashic tradition anchors Satan's role in the Akeidah narrative to his accusation before God at the feast celebrating Yitzchak's weaning: the Gemara (Sanhedrin 89b) records, in the name of Rabbi Yochanan citing Rabbi Yosei ben Zimra, that Satan complained to God that Avraham had not offered so much as a dove in thanksgiving for the gift of a son at one hundred years old — and God's response was to test Avraham with the command to sacrifice Yitzchak, confident he would comply immediately.

A parallel version in Bereshit Rabbah 55:4 attributes the same triggering thought to Avraham himself, who reflected that he had rejoiced and caused others to rejoice at the feast yet had not set aside even one bull or ram for God — suggesting that both Avraham's own conscience and Satan's accusation intertwine as the backdrop to the divine test.

Once Avraham set out for Har HaMoriah, Satan intercepted him on the road disguised as an old man, questioning why someone going to pray would carry fire, a knife, and wood — and when Avraham deflected by saying he might need to slaughter and cook food along the way, Satan pressed him directly, citing his own presence at the divine command and arguing that an old man who had waited a hundred years for a son had no business destroying him, as Midrash Tanchuma, Vayera 22 describes in detail, with Yalkut Shimoni on Torah 98 and מדרש ויושע preserving closely related versions of this roadside confrontation.

Pirkei DeRabbi Eliezer 31 adds that Satan's interference did not end with the journey: when the ram created at twilight came to be offered in Yitzchak's place, Sammael stood by and distracted it — entangling it in the trees in an effort to prevent Avraham's offering from being completed — until the ram stretched out its leg and grabbed Avraham's garment, directing his gaze to it.

Maamar Mordechai Hilchot Shabbat, Chelek 5 108:56 cites Pirkei DeRabbi Eliezer further: after Avraham descended from Har HaMoriah and Satan saw that his desire to annul Avraham's sacrifice had been thwarted, Satan went to Sarah and falsely told her that her husband had slaughtered Yitzchak — and she wept and cried out in three bursts of weeping and three wails corresponding to the three tekiot and three teruot of the shofar, until her soul departed and she died.

Bava Batra 16a preserves a striking inversion of Satan's usual prosecutorial posture: drawing on the verse from Iyov, it records Satan himself testifying before God that he had traversed the entire world and found no one as faithful as Avraham — who, despite having been promised the land and then finding no place to bury Sarah, never questioned God's ways.

מכתב מאליהו, חלק ד עמוד רלט draws on the Tanchuma account to highlight that one of Satan's arguments on the road was to suggest that the command to slaughter Yitzchak had come not from God but from the adversary himself — and Avraham replied with certainty that it was not the adversary but God who had spoken, because Avraham, steeped in truth, could immediately distinguish the voice of truth from the voice of falsehood.

מכתב מאליהו, חלק בעמוד מה, שני תכסיסים נגד היצר reflects on the same Tanchuma episode to draw a lesson about resisting the evil inclination: Avraham deflected Satan's challenges with evasive and even misleading answers — telling him he was going to pray rather than to sacrifice — and the midrash thereby teaches that one is permitted to fend off the yetzer hara even with stratagems and partial concealment.

Tzitz Eliezer (Tzitz Eliezer 14:98) engages the same midrashic traditions, noting that Satan came to Avraham and presented him with many calculations — arguing on grounds of justice and the honor of Heaven that slaughtering Yitzchak would constitute a great desecration of God's name — framing Satan's intervention not merely as temptation but as a sophisticated theological case against compliance.

Divrei Yatziv (Divrei Yatziv Likutim 56) draws on Rashi's reading of the ram caught in the thicket to explain that Satan entangled and confused the ram in the trees as it ran toward Avraham, and connects the blowing of the shofar on Rosh Hashanah to a commemoration of the Akeidah and of Satan's effort at that very moment to obstruct the sacrifice that the ram came to replace.

Sanhedrin 89b

Sanhedrin 89b:9

The Talmud expands the Akedah as a heavenly trial: Satan accuses Abraham and challenges the authenticity of his devotion, while God’s command to Abraham demonstrates his faith.

Rabbi Yoḥanan said in the name of Rabbi Yosei ben Zimra: This means after the statement [devarav] of Satan, as it is written: “And the child grew, and was weaned, and Abraham prepared a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned” (Genesis 21:8). Satan said before the Holy One, Blessed be He: Master of the Universe, this old man, you favored him with a product of the womb, i.e., a child, at one hundred years of age. From the entire feast that he prepared, did he not have even one dove or one pigeon to sacrifice before You as a thanks-offering? God said to Satan: Did Abraham prepare the feast for any reason but for his son? If I say to him: Sacrifice your son before Me, he would immediately slaughter him. Immediately, after these matters, the verse states: “And God tried Abraham.” Satan preceded Abraham to the path that he took to bind his son and said to him: “If one ventures a word to you, will you be weary…you have instructed many, and you have strengthened the weak hands. Your words have upheld him that was falling…but now it comes upon you, and you are weary” (Job 4:2–5). Do you now regret what you are doing? Abraham said to him in response: “And I will walk with my integrity” (Psalms 26:11). Satan said to Abraham: “Is not your fear of God your foolishness?” (Job 4:6). In other words, your fear will culminate in the slaughter of your son. Abraham said to him: “Remember, please, whoever perished, being innocent” (Job 4:7). God is righteous and His pronouncements are just. Once Satan saw that Abraham was not heeding him, he said to him: “Now a word was secretly brought to me, and my ear received a whisper thereof” (Job 4:12). This is what I heard from behind the heavenly curtain [pargod], which demarcates between God and the ministering angels: The sheep is to be sacrificed as a burnt-offering, and Isaac is not to be sacrificed as a burnt-offering. Abraham said to him: Perhaps that is so. However, this is the punishment of the liar, that even if he speaks the truth, others do not listen to him. Therefore, I do not believe you and will fulfill that which I was commanded to perform.

Genesis Rabbah 55:4

Bereshit Rabbah 55:4

In the opening interpretation of the Akedah, Satan challenges Abraham’s devotion and questions whether his righteousness will withstand the command to sacrifice Isaac, framing the episode as a test of Abraham’s faithfulness.

Midrash Tanchuma, Vayera 22:10

This homiletical treatment of the Akedah portrays Satan attempting to obstruct Abraham on the way to fulfill God’s command, including by appearing in different forms and presenting arguments against the sacrifice.

Satan appeared before him on the road in the guise of an old man and asked: “Whither are you going?” Abraham replied: “To pray.” “And why,” Satan retorted, “does one going to pray carry fire and a knife in his hands, and wood on his shoulders?” “We may tarry there for several days,” said Abraham, “and slaughter an animal and cook it.” The old man (Satan) responded: “That is not so; I was present when the Holy One, blessed be He, ordered you to take your son. Why should an old man, who begets a son at the age of a hundred, destroy him? Have you not heard the parable of the man who destroyed his own possessions and then was forced to beg from others? If you believe that you will have another son, you are listening to the words of a seducer. And furthermore, if you destroy a soul, you will be held legally accountable for it.” Abraham answered: “It was not a seducer, but the Holy One, blessed be He, who told me what I must do, and I shall not listen to you.” Satan departed from him and appeared at Isaac’s right hand in the guise of a youth. He inquired: “Where are you going?” “To study the law,” Isaac replied. “Alive or dead?” he retorted. “Is it possible for a man to learn the law after he is dead?” Isaac queried. He said to him: “Oh, unfortunate son of an unhappy mother, many days your mother fasted before your birth, and now this demented old man is about to sacrifice you.” Isaac replied: “Even so, I will not disregard the will of my Creator, nor the command of my father.” He turned to his father and said: “Father, do you hear what this man has told me?” He replied: “Pay no heed to him, he has come only to torment us.” Forthwith, And Isaac spoke (ibid., v. 7). On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes (ibid., v. 4). Since the distance was extremely short, what delayed them three days? When Satan realized that they would not pay any attention to him, he went ahead and created a river in their path. When Abraham stepped into the river, it reached his knees. He ordered his young men to follow him, and they did so. But in the middle of the river the water reached his neck. Thereupon, Abraham lifted his eyes heavenward and cried out: Master of the Universe, You have chosen me; You have instructed me; You revealed Yourself to me; You have declared: I am one and You are one, and through You shall my name be made known in My world. You have ordered me: Offer, Isaac, thy son, as a sacrifice, and I did not refuse; but now, as I am about to fulfill Thy command, these waters endanger my life. If either I or my son, Isaac, should drown, who will fulfill Your decrees, and who will proclaim the Unity of Your Name? The Holy One, blessed be He, responded: Be assured that through you the Unity of My Name will be made known through the world. Thereupon the Holy One, blessed be He, rebuked the source of the water, and caused the river to dry up. Once again, they stood on dry land. What did Satan do then? He said to Abraham: “Now a word was secretly brought to me (Job 4:12); that is, I have heard from behind the heavenly curtain that a lamb will be sacrificed as a burnt offering instead of Isaac.” Abraham responded: “It is a liar’s fate that even though he should speak the truth, no one will believe him.”

Pirkei DeRabbi Eliezer 31

Pirkei DeRabbi Eliezer 31:11

The Akedah is narrated with Satan as an active adversary who seeks to prevent Abraham from reaching Mount Moriah, including through deceptive obstacles and arguments.

Rabbi Zechariah said: That ram, which was created at the twilight, ran and came to be offered up instead of Isaac, but Sammael was standing by, and distracting it, in order to annul the offering of our father Abraham. And it was caught by its two horns in the trees, as it is said, "And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold, behind him a ram caught in the thicket by its horns" (Gen. 22:13). What did that ram do? It put forth its leg and took hold of the coat of our father Abraham, and Abraham looked, saw the ram, and he went and set it free. He offered it up instead of Isaac his son, as it is said, "And Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son" (ibid.).

While traveling, Satan appeared to Avraham on the road disguised as an old man, asking where he was going; when Avraham replied he was going to pray, Satan questioned why he was carrying wood, fire, and a knife if his purpose was prayer, then mocked him for being willing to lose his beloved son at such an advanced age, but Avraham responded that it was God Himself—not Satan—who commanded him, and when Satan further tried to dissuade him by questioning his faith and even offered false reassurance that Moshe would bring the offering instead of Yitzchak, Avraham rejected this too, stating that a liar's words are untrustworthy even when true, and that only what God deems good will he do.

Bava Batra 16a

Bava Batra 16a:3

Satan testifies before God that he has traversed the entire world and found no one as faithful as Abraham, who despite receiving a promise of the land was unable to find a place to bury Sarah, yet neither complained against God's ways nor accused Him of breaking His promise.

“Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and the Satan came also among them to present himself before God. And the Lord said to the Satan: From where do you come? And the Satan answered the Lord, and said: From going to and fro in the earth and from walking up and down in it” (Job 2:1–2). The Satan said before God: Master of the Universe, I have gone to and fro across the entire world and have not found anyone as faithful as your servant Abraham, to whom you said: “Arise, walk through the land in the length of it and in the breadth of it; for I will give it to you” (Genesis 13:17). And when he wanted to bury Sarah, he could not find a place to bury her, and yet he did not criticize Your ways, or accuse You of having failed to keep Your promise.

Sanhedrin 89b:7

God told Avraham that he had already tested him successfully in many trials, and now asked him to stand firm in this test so that people would not say the earlier trials were without substance.

Sifra, Shemini, Mekhilta DeMiluim II:3

Sifra, Shemini, Mekhilta DeMiluim II:3

The passage teaches that Moses told Aaron to bring a calf as a sin offering, explaining that although God agreed to atone for Aaron's sins, Aaron must give a gift to Satan so that Satan will not hate him when he enters the sanctuary; the midrash further argues that just as Israel needs atonement (as indicated by the goat for sin offering commanded to them), Aaron also needs it, and notes that Israel's hand was involved in both the beginning (slaughtering the goat of Bereishit) and the end (making the golden calf), so the goat comes to atone for the deed of goats and the calf comes to atone for the deed of the calf.

Pesikta Rabbati 36

Satan asks God to show him the light of Mashiach hidden under God's throne, and upon seeing it, Satan falls and realizes this Mashiach will defeat him and all the nations' princes in Gehinnom; God then describes Mashiach as Ephraim, righteous and exalted, before whom no nation can stand and whose enemies flee.

Ramban on Genesis 22:1

Ramban on Genesis 22:1

Ramban discusses the nature of divine testing in the Akedah: the test brings Abraham’s latent righteousness into action and public manifestation. This provides a major medieval framework for understanding the adversarial trial motif.

According to the Midrash Tanchuma on the Akedah portion, Satan challenged Avraham on the way to the binding by suggesting that the command to slaughter his son might have come from Satan rather than from God, asking whether Avraham would listen to the tempter and lose his soul to judgment; Avraham responded that the command came from God alone, for he possessed the wisdom and devotion to truth to distinguish immediately between the voice of truth and the voice of falsehood.

Midrash Tanchuma on Parashat Vayera describes Satan approaching Avraham in the guise of an old man as Avraham went to bind Yitzchak, questioning where he was going and suggesting that Avraham wait a day or two before slaughtering and baking the offering, to which Avraham replied that he was not in such a state of mind when God commanded him to take Yitzchak—and the passage notes that Chazal thereby taught that one should reject the yetzer hara even through seemingly trivial matters, falsehoods, and cunning, as these methods can sometimes repel it entirely.

Maamar Mordechai Hilchot Shabbat, Chelek 5 108:56

Maamar Mordechai Hilchot Shabbat, Chelek 5 108:56

Pirkei deRabbi Eliezer reports that when Avraham returned from Mount Moriah, Satan became angry at his failure to incite Avraham's desire and prevent the sacrifice, so he went to Sarah and told her falsely that Avraham had taken the young Yitzchak and offered him as a burnt offering while the boy wept helplessly; Sarah then wept and wailed three times each in response to three blasts and three howls, after which her soul departed and she died.
