Tehillim – God as David's Shield
Psalms 144:1-2
David praises God as 'my rock, my fortress, my stronghold and my deliverer, my shield (maginni) in whom I take refuge.' The divine epithet 'Magen David' appears directly in the liturgical closing blessing of the Amidah (Magen Avraham / Magen David), rooted in these verses.
Of David. Blessed is GOD, my rock, who trains my hands for battle, my fingers for warfare; my faithful one, my fortress, my haven and my deliverer, my shield, in whom I take shelter, who makes peoples subject to me.
Why it matters — This psalm provides the direct biblical language for calling God the 'shield' of David, connecting the name Magen David to royal and covenantal protection.
