What the sources say

The base rule for Krias HaTorah is that ten free adult men are required, and Shulchan Arukh, Orach Chayim 143:1 and Arukh HaShulchan, Orach Chaim 143:1 state that once ten began, they finish even if some leave — a principle rooted in Megillah 23b:4 and Mishnah Megillah 4:3, which require ten for any devar shebikedushah including Krias HaTorah.

Directly on point, Kitzur Shulchan Arukh Yalkut Yosef, Orach Chaim 143:3 rules that six people who have not yet heard Krias HaTorah may join with four who already heard it, and the Torah may be read with its opening and closing brachot; Kaf HaChayim on Shulchan Arukh, Orach Chayim 143:3 similarly cites that even seven who have not heard may combine with three who already have to bring out the Torah, drawing an explicit parallel to the analogous rule for chazarat hashatz in siman 69.

This combining principle is grounded in the law of tefillah b'tzibbur itself: Mishneh Torah, Prayer and the Priestly Blessing 8:4 rules that a minyan for communal prayer, kedushah, and Krias HaTorah may be completed by adding those who already prayed, so long as the majority of the ten have not yet prayed, and Mishneh Torah, Prayer and the Priestly Blessing 9:3 describes the chazzan praying aloud to discharge both those who have and have not yet fulfilled their obligation. Mishnah Berurah 143:16 confirms that those who already read may join to complete the seven kerואים (and the three for Monday/Thursday), though it adds that lekhatchila it is preferable, where possible, to have seven fresh aliyos read from where the previous reading left off.

Beit Yosef, Orach Chayim 69:3 traces the machlokes among Rishonim about how many must not yet have heard Kaddish and Borchu for a new instance to be effective — Rabbeinu Tam requiring seven, others six, and some suggesting even three or five based on the wording of the pasuk — and Teshuvot HaRadbaz Volume 4 1312:1-2 discusses this dispute directly, addressing a case of ten who each prayed individually and not having heard Kaddish and Kedushah, and whether they may repeat davening to fulfill that obligation.

Kitzur Shulchan Arukh Yalkut Yosef, Orach Chaim, דין תפלה בצבור 90:14 rules that a minyan of six or seven praying together, completed by others who already prayed, is still considered tefillah b'tzibbur and may say chazarah with kedushah and Birkat Kohanim, since rov minyan ke'kulo, though some require that all ten not yet have prayed; in a case of bittul Torah one need not be machmir. Kitzur Shulchan Arukh Yalkut Yosef, Orach Chaim 69:2 and Kitzur Shulchan Arukh Yalkut Yosef, Orach Chaim 236:5 extend similar reasoning to Maariv, permitting one who has not yet prayed to lead nine who already have, or permitting one of those who already began privately to lead Kaddish once a minyan gathers.

B'Mareh HaBazak Volume V 2:8-9 builds on the Radbaz's position, ruling that even one who has not yet prayed may pray aloud with nine who already prayed quietly and all may answer Kedushah, and that one of those who already prayed may descend before the amud to lead chazarat hashatz under the principle that kol Yisrael areivim zeh la'zeh.

Avnei Yashfeh 8:18 takes up a related scenario where five began shemoneh esrei together and a sixth joined mid-tefillah, raising uncertainty whether these six are regarded as having been together from the start for purposes of saying chazarat hashatz, and Avnei Yashfeh 5:13 considers whether eight who have not yet prayed Maariv should join two who already prayed to form a minyan or daven in order absent a full minyan.

Teshuvos V'hanhagos 4:35 addresses this question directly, reporting that someone who already prayed should repeat the tefillah mentally, which works bedieved to constitute tefillah b'tzibbur, while flagging an unresolved tension in the Mishnah Berurah's indications over whether six who have not prayed suffice or ten together are required.

Maayan Omer 1:5:23 rules that a minyan composed of a majority who have not yet prayed together with a minority who already prayed is considered tefillah b'tzibbur, and specifically states that six who have not prayed may join with four who already prayed in order to daven with chazarat hashatz — directly supporting that aliyos may be given to those from the group of four who already davened.

Megillah 23b

Megillah 23b:4

Chachmei Bavel state that public Torah reading, the haftara, and other expressions of sanctity require a quorum of ten, derived from “I shall be hallowed among the children of Israel” and a comparison with the ten spies who constituted an evil congregation.

MISHNA: One does not recite the introductory prayers and blessing [poresin] before Shema; nor does one pass before the ark to repeat the Amida prayer; nor do the priests lift their hands to recite the Priestly Benediction; nor is the Torah read in public; nor does one conclude with a reading from the Prophets [haftara] in the presence of fewer than ten men. GEMARA: The Gemara asks: From where are these matters, i.e., that ten people are needed in each of these cases, derived? Rabbi Ḥiyya bar Abba said that Rabbi Yoḥanan said: It is as the verse states: “And I shall be hallowed among the children of Israel” (Leviticus 22:32), which indicates that any expression of sanctity may not be recited in a quorum of fewer than ten men. The connotation of ten associated with the word “among” in the portion of Korah is, in turn, inferred by means of another verbal analogy between the word “congregation” written there and the word “congregation” written in reference to the ten spies who slandered Eretz Yisrael, as it is written there: “How long shall I bear with this evil congregation?” (Numbers 14:27). Consequently, just as there, in the case of the spies, it was a congregation of ten people, as there were twelve spies altogether, and Joshua and Caleb were not included in the evil congregation, so too, here, in the case of Korah, the reference is to a congregation of ten people. The first several items mentioned in the mishna are expressions of sanctity, and they consequently require a quorum of ten.

Mishneh Torah, Prayer and the Priestly Blessing 12:17

Rambam states that a minor who knows how to read and whom the blessings are addressed to may count among the Torah readers, while an individual who interrupts between the concluding reader and the maftir with Kaddish does not count; if only one person knows how to read, that person reads repeatedly until completing the required number of readers.

Analyzes the communal requirements for reading the Torah and clarifies how the presence and participation of those who have already fulfilled their obligation affect the reading.

Teshuvot HaRadbaz Volume 4 1312

Teshuvot HaRadbaz Volume 4 1312:1-2

David ben Solomon ibn (Abi) Zimra considers whether people who prayed individually but did not hear קדיש and קדושה may repeat the prayer with a quorum, contrasting the views attributed to Rashi’s students and Rabbenu Tam on how many participants must not have heard them.

Kitzur Shulchan Arukh Yalkut Yosef, Orach Chaim 69:2

Kitzur Shulchan Arukh Yalkut Yosef, Orach Chaim 69:2

Rav Yitzchak Yosef states that someone who has not prayed Arvit may lead the service with nine people who have already prayed, reciting Chatzi Kaddish, Barekhu, the Kaddish before the Amidah, and Kaddish Titkabel, though this does not count as prayer with a congregation for him.

Kitzur Shulchan Arukh Yalkut Yosef, Orach Chaim 236:5

The passage permits one of several people who began praying Arvit individually to serve as the shaliach tzibur and recite Kaddish after “Shomer et Amo Yisrael La’ad” once a minyan has assembled.

Kitzur Shulchan Arukh Yalkut Yosef, Orach Chaim,

Kitzur Shulchan Arukh Yalkut Yosef, Orach Chaim,

Rav Yitzchak Yosef rules that when six or seven people pray together and the others have already prayed, the prayer is still considered תפלה בצבור, and they may recite the repetition with Kedushah and Birkat Kohanim, though some require ten people who have not yet prayed; where this would cause ביטול תורה, one need not be stringent.

B'Mareh HaBazak Volume V 2

B'Mareh HaBazak Volume V 2:8-9

ה passage states that when nine have prayed silently and a tenth arrives, a full Chazarat HaShatz is not technically present if six or more of the majority did not pray together, but someone who already prayed may lead the communal prayer, and Kedushah may be recited for the tenth if he has not yet prayed.

Silent Prayer Before Dawn in Chassidic Teaching

Chassidic masters teach that the pre-dawn hours offer a unique spiritual opportunity for inner prayer and devekut (cleaving to the divine). Drawing on kabbalistic sources and the teachings of the Ari, Maggid of Mezeritch, and R. Elimelech of Lizhensk, these sources describe how silent, concentrated prayer in the stillness before dawn creates a vessel for the soul's ascent and divine union.
