Jewish sources on the spiritual and ethical dangers of withdrawing from communal life and collective responsibility. The sources present separation from the community as a grave spiritual failing, emphasizing that individual piety cannot substitute for solidarity with others' suffering and participation in shared religious and moral obligations.

What the sources say
The foundational warning against separating from the community appears already in Hillel's dictum — Pirkei Avot 2:4 records his instruction: 'Do not separate yourself from the community,' a statement the Gemara in Taanit 11a reinforces with striking force, teaching that when Israel is in distress and one member separates himself, the ministering angels place their hands on his head and declare that he will not share in the community's consolation.
The Rambam gives this prohibition its sharpest legal contour: Mishneh Torah, Repentance 3:11 rules that one who separates from the ways of the community — not by transgressing outright, but simply by standing apart, not joining in their troubles, not fasting on their fasts, going his own way as though he were not among them — forfeits his share in the World to Come, even without having committed any formal sin.
Shulchan Arukh, Yoreh De'ah 345:5 carries this ruling into practical law, holding that those who cast off the yoke of mitzvot and live as though exempt from communal obligation are not mourned over as ordinary Jews; and the Rema there adds that one who separates from the community by refusing to share in its tax burdens is nonetheless mourned — a distinction that sharpens the definition of what 'separating' means in different contexts.
The mystical tradition frames communal belonging not merely as obligation but as the precondition for the divine presence to rest upon Israel: Tanya, Likkutei Amarim 32 teaches, drawing on Hillel's saying, that the foundation of the entire Torah is the unification of souls, and that where there is division among souls the Shekhinah cannot dwell; similarly, Tomer Devorah 1:10 reasons that because all Jewish souls are bound together and included in one another, the one who is present among the first ten in the synagogue receives reward corresponding to all who follow.
Sefat Emet, Nitzavim תרמ"ח makes explicit the corollary: it is specifically the wicked one who removes himself from the collective upon whom punishment falls, while the community as a whole endures; and רש"ר הירש, במעגלי שנה חלק א draws out the mutual obligation, noting that just as the community waits for every last individual before calling for rain, so too the individual, even within his own home, may not eat and drink in tranquility while the community fasts and suffers.
Mesillat Yesharim 13 draws a crucial distinction between praiseworthy separation — withdrawing from worldly temptations — and the condemned separation from the community, which Shlomo's warning 'do not be overly righteous' is invoked to guard against, making clear that not every act of withdrawal is virtuous.
Igros Moshe (Igros Moshe YD 4:14) addresses a distinct halachic question — the conditions governing ritual impurity for a woman who experiences bloodflow — and does not bear directly on the laws of poresh min hatzibbur.

Isaiah 58:6-7
Isaiah 58:6-7
Isaiah rejects a purely private religious posture and defines acceptable fasting through acts of justice, feeding the hungry, sheltering the poor, and restoring social bonds. The prophetic critique is a major Tanakh source against withdrawal from communal moral responsibility.
No, this is the fast I desire: To unlock fetters of wickedness, And untie the cords of the yoke To let the oppressed go free; To break off every yoke. It is to share your bread with the hungry, And to take the wretched poor into your home; When you see the naked, to clothe them, And not to ignore your own kin.
Jeremiah instructs exiles to seek the welfare of the city and pray for it, because their own welfare is bound up with its welfare. The verse articulates embedded communal responsibility even under conditions of displacement.
The rebuilding of Jerusalem is portrayed as a collective project in which families and groups labor and defend the city together. The narrative illustrates communal solidarity as the practical opposite of standing apart from the ציבור.
I said to the nobles, the prefects, and the rest of the people, “There is much work and it is spread out; we are scattered over the wall, far from one another. When you hear a trumpet call, gather yourselves to me at that place; our God will fight for us!”
Hillel warns against separating oneself from the community: one should not trust personal righteousness while withdrawing from collective life, and should not remain indifferent to communal suffering. This is the central rabbinic formulation of poresh min ha-tzibbur.

Taanit 11a
Taanit 11a:5
The sugya states that when the community is in distress, a person should share its suffering rather than separate himself; one who does not join the community’s anguish is excluded from its consolation. It also discusses the dangers of withdrawing from communal responsibility.
Likewise, the Sages taught in a baraita: When the Jewish people is immersed in distress, and one of them separates himself from the community and does not share their suffering, the two ministering angels who accompany a person come and place their hands on his head, as though he was an offering, and say: This man, so-and-so, who has separated himself from the community, let him not see the consolation of the community. A similar idea is taught in another baraita: When the community is immersed in suffering, a person may not say: I will go to my home and I will eat and drink, and peace be upon you, my soul. And if he does so, the verse says about him: “And behold joy and gladness, slaying oxen and killing sheep, eating flesh and drinking wine; let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we shall die” (Isaiah 22:13). And the prophecy continues with what is written afterward, in the following verse: “And the Lord of hosts revealed Himself in my ears: Surely this iniquity shall not be expiated by you until you die” (Isaiah 22:14). The baraita continues: Rather, a person should be distressed together with the community. As we found with Moses our teacher that he was distressed together with the community, as it is stated during the war with Amalek: “But Moses’ hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat upon it” (Exodus 17:12). But didn’t Moses have one pillow or one cushion to sit upon; why was he forced to sit on a rock? Rather, Moses said as follows: Since the Jewish people are immersed in suffering, I too will be with them in suffering, as much as I am able, although I am not participating in the fighting. The baraita adds: And anyone who is distressed together with the community will merit seeing the consolation of the community.
The Yerushalmi discusses the communal obligation to fast and cry out over public distress. It reinforces that religious response to crisis is enacted through the community rather than through private spiritual detachment.
Rabbi Shimon ben Lakish teaches that when the Holy One becomes weary of righteous people in this world, He returns and shows them mercy, as evidenced by the verse "The mercies of the Lord do not end"; Rabbi Aleksandri interprets "new each morning, great is Your faithfulness" to mean that God renews us each morning, and thereby we know His faithfulness is great regarding the resurrection of the dead.
Rambam lists among those who have no share in the World to Come one who separates from the ways of the community, even when one does not commit a single isolated transgression. The halakhic-theological formulation directly treats separation from the community as a grave category.
Rambam presents the human tendency to be shaped by one’s associates and community, and therefore counsels attachment to the righteous and residence among virtuous people. This supplies a complementary account of why deliberate social detachment can be spiritually dangerous.
The passage states that just as the worldly punishments are evidence of punishments in the world to come, the Sages counted those engaged in slander, those who separate themselves from the ways of the community, and those who humiliate another in public among those without a share in the world to come, alongside heretics, Epicureans, and deniers of Torah, though the punishment for humiliating one's fellow is not equal to the punishment for denying Torah, nor is the punishment for violating a commandment equal to that of denying the Torah's root.
The Mekhilta interprets Israel's encampment at that location as unified in thought and purpose, whereas all their other encampments were characterized by murmuring and dissension.
AND THERE ISRAEL ENCAMPED as one man and with one mind — but all their other encampments were made in a murmuring spirit and in a spirit of dissension (Mekhilta).

Derashot HaRan 5:54
Derashot HaRan 5:54
One who deviates from the words of the Sages—even in matters that are not interpretations of commandments—is an apikoros without a share in the world to come, because just as we are commanded to follow their rulings in Torah law, we are commanded to accept all their teachings transmitted through received tradition and scriptural interpretations, whether or not those teachings constitute actual commandments; the passage illustrates this principle through the Talmudic account in Sanhedrin of a student who mocked Rabbi Yochanan's teaching about future precious stones in Jerusalem and was struck dead, demonstrating that rejecting the words of the Sages is equivalent to rejecting the foundation of Torah itself.
Anger is extremely harmful and one should strive to distance oneself from it entirely, even refraining from anger over matters that would justify it; a leader may display anger outwardly to instill fear while maintaining inner composure, since anger causes error and leads the wise to lose wisdom, shortens life, and corrupts speech—therefore one should cultivate detachment from provocation, learning from Hillel the Elder whose humility brought converts under the wings of the Divine Presence. Excessive fear imposed in a household can lead to forbidden acts (through servants purchasing prohibited items unknowingly, or a wife committing transgression in fear), and a public official who instills fear not for the sake of Heaven causes people to become classified with heretics and apostates.

Q — The warning opens with a four-fold list — "איש או אשה או משפחה או שבט" who turns from Hashem. Then the punishment clauses follow in pasukim 19-20, which on first read repeat themselves: "יעשן אף ה' וקנאתו... Why the apparent threefold repetition? (Or HaChaim asks: once "מחה ה' את שמו," what room is left for "והבדילו"?)
A — Ibn Ezra reads the threefold punishment as exactly parallel to the threefold subject — the warning targets three units (individual, family, tribe — the woman folds into the individual category), and the punishments distribute one to each. (1) Individual ("איש או אשה") → "יעשן אף ה' וקנאתו באיש ההוא" — "ימות מיד," he dies immediately. ומחה ה' את שמו" — the family is wiped out by accumulating curses until its name is erased. (3) Tribe ("שבט") → "והבדילו ה' לרעה מכל שבטי ישראל ככל אלות הברית" — the tribe is set apart for evil. The vav at the start of each punishment clause = "or" — distributive, not cumulative. Ibn Ezra brings a parallel from Yiftach's vow (Shoftim 11:31): "והיה לה' והעליתיהו עולה" — usually read as one cumulative act (dedicated *and* offered up). Ibn Ezra reads it disjunctively: either "to Hashem" (if a person — dedicated to Divine service, not slaughtered) *or* "as an olah" (if an animal). This same Yiftach reading is fiercely attacked by Ramban (in his comment on Bamidbar 27:29) — but the principle, however contested, is unified across Tanach. (Radak and Ralbag follow Ibn Ezra on Yiftach.) Implication: Bat-Yiftach was consecrated, not slaughtered.
Q — What does it actually MEAN that Hashem will "circumcise our hearts" in the future? And how does this square with bechira chofshit, which Chazal insist is the foundation of שכר ועונש?
A — Ramban: the ערלה of the heart is desire itself — "החמדה והתאוה ערלה ללב." In ימות המשיח, after Israel's full teshuva, Hashem will REMOVE desire, so that choosing-good becomes Israel's NATURE — like the heavens and their hosts, "פועלי אמת שפעולתם אמת ולא ישנו את תפקידם." This is a return to אדם הראשון's pre-sin state: before eating from the עץ, Adam acted by nature with no contrary will. The eating of the eitz birthed bechira (= "דעת" = רצון) — a "מדה אלהית" but also a source of יצר and תאוה. Crucial caveat: this divine help comes only AFTER human teshuva — "הבא ליטהר מסייעין אותו" — never as a substitute for the work. And it brings an inevitable consequence: per Chazal on קהלת, ימות המשיח have "לא זכות ולא חובה" — both presuppose bechira, which itself will be transcended.
Shulchan Arukh, Yoreh De'ah 345:5
The passage defines those who dissociate from communal practices—including those who reject the yoke of commandments, do not participate in community observance of festivals or attendance at synagogues and study-houses, or who are apostates and informers—as persons for whom mourning rites are not observed, while their relatives instead wear white garments and rejoice. The gloss adds that one who refuses to share communal financial burdens is mourned for individually, though other townspeople need not cease work to attend to him.
All those who dissociate themselves from the practices of the community, viz., those people who have cast off the yoke of the precepts from their neck, and are not included within the community of Israel in the observance thereof, [nor] in [showing] respect [towards] the Festivals, [nor] in attending Synagogues and Study-Houses, but are as freemen for themselves, like the [people of] other nations [who have not accepted God]; and likewise, those who are apostates and informers, — [the law is that] for all these, one does not observe Aninuth or mourning rites, but their brethren and other relations put on white clothes and wrap themselves in white and eat and drink and rejoice. Gloss: One who dissociates himself from [the practices] of the community and refuses to carry the burden with them of imposts and Arnona, is mourned for, but all the other townspeople are not required to abstain from work on account of him in order to attend to him.
Maharal explains loving-kindness as a defining human and Jewish mode of connection, rooted in the obligation to benefit others. His analysis provides a philosophical account of why withdrawal from communal life contradicts the structure of Torah ethics.
The opening treatment of imitatio Dei presents patience, compassion, and sustaining others as divine attributes for human emulation. It offers a mystical-ethical foundation for remaining connected to and merciful toward the community.
So is it [regarding] a man with his fellow: All Israel are relations of flesh, these with those. Since all of their souls are bound together, this one has a share in that and that one has a share in this. And hence it is not similar when the many do the commandments [to when they are only done by individuals]. And all of this is because of their being bound together. And our Rabbis, may their memory be blessed, thus explained (Berakhot 47b) about the one who is counted from the first ten in the synagogue - [that] even if a hundred come after him, he recieves the reward that corresponds to all of them. It is actually a hundred, as per its understanding. Since the ten are included - these in those - behold, they are ten times ten, one hundred. And [so] each one of them is composed of a hundred [parts]. If so, even if one hundred come [afterwards], he has the reward of a hundred. As so from this reason, Israel are guarantors for each other. Since each one actually has a part of his fellow - when the one sins, he damages himself and he damages the part that his fellow has in him. It comes out from the side of that part that his fellow is his guarantor. If so, they are the relation, one of the other. And hence it is fitting that a person be desiring of the good of his fellow and his eye be good towards the good of his fellow, and that his honor should be as beloved to him as his [own] - as he is literally him[self]. And from this reason were we commanded (Leviticus 19:18), "you shall love your neighbor as yourself." And it is fitting that he desire the propriety of his fellow and not speak about his disgrace at all. And he [should] not want it, in the way that the Holy One, blessed be He, does not want our disgrace nor our pain - from the reason of relation. So too [should] he not want the disgrace of his fellow nor his pain, nor his corruption. And it [should] be bad for him on account of [his fellow], as if he was actually experiencing that pain, or [good for him from] that good [that he experiences].
Ramchal’s discussion of abstinence distinguishes disciplined restraint from rejecting legitimate human and social obligations. It is useful for clarifying that prishut can be holy only when properly ordered, not when it becomes abandonment of the community.
The explanation is that the matter certainly involves many fundamental distinctions. There is [good] Separation which we are commanded in and there is [bad] Separation which we are warned not to stumble in. This is what king Shlomo said: "do not be overly righteous" (Kohelet 7:16). We will now explain the good type of Separation. After it has become clear to us that all matters of this world are trials to a man, as we wrote earlier and demonstrated with proofs, and likewise after we have truly realized man's great frailness and his close disposition to all evil, it will perforce be clear that man should do whatever he can to spare himself from these matters in order to protect himself from the evil which is at their feet. For there is no worldly pleasure which does not draw after it some sin in its heel. For example: food and drink, when clean of all dietary prohibition are permitted to eat. But filling one's belly draws after it removal of the yoke of Heaven, and drinking of wine draws after it licentiousness and other evils. All the more so, once a person habituates himself to satiate [his belly] with food and drink. For then if but one time he lacks fulfilling his habit, it will greatly pain and disturb him.

Chazal derive from this passage that each individual must view themselves as an inseparable part of the Jewish people; correspondingly, the community is responsible for every individual and does not begin to ask for rain until even the last person in Israel reaches home safely from the rain, and similarly each individual is responsible to the community and is not permitted to separate from the community and eat and drink peacefully while the community suffers and fasts.
A judge must conduct himself toward the public with humility and reverence rather than arrogance, and any leader who instills excessive fear not for the sake of Heaven will never see a Torah scholar; similarly, he must not treat the public with frivolity even if they are unlearned, nor step upon the heads of the holy people, and must bear the burden and yoke of the public, while the public is obligated to show honor to the judge so that his authority rests upon them—and the judge himself must not demean himself or act frivolously before them, for once a person is appointed as a leader over the public, he is forbidden to do work before three people lest he be demeaned before them, and certainly he is forbidden to eat, drink, or become intoxicated before the multitude.

A tanna quoted in the name of Rabbi Chiya teaches that one who engages in Torah study before an am haaretz is like one who violates his betrothed before him, deriving this from Deuteronomy 33:4 by reading "morasha" (betrothed) instead of "morashah" (inheritance); the passage then explains that am haaretz hate scholars of Torah more intensely than the nations of the world hate Israel because the am haaretz rejected the opportunity to acquire wisdom that was available to them, making them more fundamentally opposed to the intellectual than gentiles who never received Torah, and women of am haaretz are even more removed from the intellectual than the men.

Mishnah Berurah 236:11
When one is still reciting the blessings of Shema during the communal prayer service, if he estimates that he can finish Shema and its blessings before the congregation reaches the Shemoneh Esrei, he should do so and skip the intervening verses in order to pray Shemoneh Esrei with the congregation, since communal prayer takes precedence over maintaining the connection between redemption and prayer; however, if he estimates that he will not be able to catch up with a minyan afterward, he should not forgo the requirement of connecting redemption to prayer.

A cantor cannot be removed from his position unless a valid disqualification is found in him; the Hagah clarifies that he is not removed merely for rumors (such as being caught with a non-Jewish woman or being accused by one person), but if witnesses testify to such matters he is removed; a cantor who is a slaughterer and inspector should not pray in soiled and foul-smelling clothes, and if he refuses to change them during prayer he is removed; a cantor who speaks obscenely or sings gentile songs should be stopped from doing so, and if he does not listen he is removed; and a cantor who has aged but wishes to appoint his son to assist him occasionally may do so even if the son's voice is not as pleasant, provided the son fulfills other duties adequately, and the congregation cannot object.

Teshuvot HaRadbaz Volume 2 650:1
A questioner asks whether rooms adjacent to the synagogue with partial openings (but not fully breached) combine with those in the synagogue itself for prayer purposes, or whether those praying in the rooms count as praying in the synagogue or are considered separate entities. The responsum initially suggests they do not combine, citing a Talmudic passage about a large courtyard breached into a small one—where a quorum in the large courtyard with a cantor in the small one does not fulfill the obligation, but a quorum in the small with cantor in the large does—and concludes that since these rooms are not fully breached, each constitutes its own domain and prayers there are not equivalent to synagogue prayer. However, upon further examination, the author refines this: the Talmudic rule applies only when each courtyard has its own separate exit, whereas here the rooms have no path except through the synagogue, making the inner rooms like an extension of the outer, so that nine in the inner room with one in the

Tiferet Yisrael 15:6
Rabbi Akiva added two further conditions for losing the world-to-come: one who reads external books (which teach falsehoods rather than true Torah) and one who whispers incantations over a wound (perverting Torah's intellectual purpose to physical healing), both representing a deviation from Torah's true intellectual nature, which is itself the world-to-come; and Abba Shaul added one who pronounces the Divine Name by its letters, which violates the proper concealment of God's unique name.
A woman who experiences bloodflow from her source, whether involuntarily or intentionally, becomes ritually impure if she senses its emission, and she sits seven clean days; even if she sees only a drop of blood the size of a mustard seed she requires seven clean days, though by rabbinical law she is impure even without sensation, and the passage discusses various conditions regarding sensation, staining, and the rationales for menstrual impurity laws, including distinctions between Torah and rabbinic requirements and the status of a woman in different circumstances such as pregnancy, nursing, or fear.

Teshuvot HaRadbaz Volume 3 912:1
The passage presents a questioner's difficulty with the writer's ruling that one should not recite Shema alone or rush ahead of the congregation, but rather recite it with the congregation word by word in synchrony; the questioner cites Rav Hai Gaon's teshuvah explaining that recitation in a whisper prevents anyone from losing even a single word, since each person is obligated in the reading and all bear responsibility for its completeness, and that loud recitation sometimes causes the congregation to fall silent while the reader continues and skips words, therefore each should recite in a whisper so nothing is omitted; the passage also cites the Rashba making a similar point that the many of Israel should recite it entirely in a whisper so that each individual pronounces it himself, lest in loud recitation one person rely on hearing the congregation's reading.
Q — The teshuvah section of Nitzavim oscillates between two prepositions: 'ושבת *עד* ה' אלהיך' (v.2) and 'כי תשוב *אל* ה' אלהיך' (v.10). The same dual usage appears in Navi: 'שובה ישראל עד ה' אלהיך... (Yoel 2:12-13). Why two prepositions for one mitzvah?
A — HaKtav VeHaKabbalah maps the prepositions onto Chazal's two-tier theory of teshuvah. 'עד' denotes *partial return* — teshuvah motivated by *fear of punishment*, in which zedonot become like shegagot but are not fully erased. 'אל' denotes *complete return* — teshuvah motivated by *love of Hashem*, in which zedonot become merits (זכויות). The prepositional difference encodes the qualitative gap: 'עד' approaches Hashem but stops short of full unity; 'אל' arrives. The same verbal root — שוב — splits into two grades according to which preposition follows. The prophets' alternations are deliberate: they call us first to the lower level we can manage (יראה), and then push toward the higher one (אהבה).
The Alter Rebbe describes the spiritual root of Jewish unity through the shared divine soul and presents love of fellow Jews as the path to overcoming external distinctions. The chapter directly supplies a Hasidic interior account of why separation from the community is spiritually false.
This is what Hillel the Elder meant when he said in regard to the fulfillment of this commandment, “This is the whole Torah, while the rest is but commentary,” and so on. For the basis and root of the entire Torah are to raise and exalt the soul high above the body, reaching to the Source and Root of all the worlds, and also to bring down the Light of the En Sof, blessed is He, upon the community of Israel, as will be explained later, i.e., into the fountainhead of the souls of all Israel, to become “One into One.” This is impossible if there is, G–d forbid, disunity among the souls, for the Holy One, blessed is He, does not dwell in an imperfect place, as we pray, “Bless us, our Father, all of us as one, with the light of Your Countenance,” as has been explained at great length elsewhere.
Sefat Emet’s Nitzavim teaching emphasizes that Israel’s standing before God is achieved through collective unity, with each individual’s spiritual place linked to the whole. It is a Hasidic reading of communal solidarity at the threshold of judgment.
The discourse on Nitzavim develops Israel’s unity as a single collective body whose members mutually sustain one another. It presents communal attachment as intrinsic to Jewish spiritual life rather than merely a social convenience.
The passage presents a machlokes between the Sages and Rabban Gamliel over communal prayer: the Sages hold that the essence lies in the congregation praying together, with the cantor's repetition serving only to discharge the obligation of those unfamiliar with the prayers, whereas Rabban Gamliel holds that the essence lies in the cantor's prayer itself.
In this sichaThe sicha analyzes the talmudic debate between Rabban Gamliel and the Sages regarding communal prayer, proposing that it hinges on whether spiritual service prioritizes quality (represented by a unified communal essence) or quantity (represented by a multiplicity of individuals). This conceptual framework of quality vs. quantity is then applied to explain Rabban Gamliel's unique rulings on study-hall admission, charity, and leadership.

Contemporary Halakhic Problems, Vol III, Part I, Chapter IV Communal Issues
The passage states that throughout history the community of Israel has strictly limited membership based on the understanding that fulfilling the people's unique mission requires the community as a whole, and that accepting those who lack the same faith-commitments or are not integrated into halakha would diminish the Divine Presence and obstruct Israel's divinely ordained purpose.
Over a period of millenia, they have jealously restricted membership in the community of Israel with a tenacity born of an awareness that the unique mission of our people can be fulfilled only by the community as an entirety. Acceptance into the spiritual fellowship of Israel of persons who do not share the same faith-commitments, or of individuals who are not integrated into the halakhic corpus of Israel, can only result in a diminution of the Divine Presence and frustration of the divinely ordained purpose in the election of Israel.
