What the sources say

The Talmudic roots of the shofar's spiritual power are already established in the Gemara (Rosh Hashanah 16a), which teaches that the shofar on Rosh Hashanah crowns God as King, causes Israel's remembrance to rise before Him for good, and evokes the merit of the Akeidah — and in the Gemara (Rosh Hashanah 16b), which adds that sounding the shofar confuses the Satan, so that a year in which it is not sounded is liable to suffer misfortune because the Satan was not confused.

The institution of blowing the shofar throughout Elul is traced directly to the events of Rosh Chodesh Elul at Sinai: Pirkei DeRabbi Eliezer (46:2) records that when God told Moshe to ascend the mountain on Rosh Chodesh Elul to receive the second Tablets, a shofar was sounded through the camp so that Israel would not again err after idolatry, and God was exalted through that very shofar — and therefore, that passage states, the Sages enacted that the shofar be sounded on Rosh Chodesh Elul every year; Yalkut Shimoni on Nach (754:2) cites the same event and the same enactment, grounding it in the pasuk "Elohim has ascended with a blast" (Amos 3:6).

The Tur (Orach Chayim 581) synthesizes the two purposes Chazal assigned to the Elul shofar: to warn Israel to do teshuvah — citing Amos 3:6, "When a ram's horn is sounded in a city, do the people not take alarm?" — and to confuse the Satan, and on that basis records the Ashkenazic custom to sound the shofar every morning and evening after prayer throughout the month.

The Shulchan Arukh (Orach Chayim 581:1) codifies the Sephardic practice of rising before dawn for Selichot from Rosh Chodesh Elul through Yom Kippur, while the Rema records the Ashkenazic practice of blowing the shofar after Shacharit — and in some places after Arvit as well — beginning from Rosh Chodesh, with Selichot beginning from the Sunday before Rosh Hashanah.

The Rambam (Mishneh Torah, Repentance 3:4) opens the shofar's meaning to a deeper dimension of machshava: even though the Rosh Hashanah shofar is a Scriptural decree, it carries an inner message — "Awaken, O sleepers, from your sleep; arise, O slumberers, from your slumber; examine your deeds and return in teshuvah, and remember your Creator" — a call to moral awakening that animates the entire season beginning in Elul.

The Arukh HaShulchan (Orach Chaim 581:1–5) draws these threads together, explaining that because the shofar saved Israel from sin and because Elul is the month designated for teshuvah as the final month of the year preceding the days of judgment — invoking "If a shofar is sounded in a city, will the people not tremble?" — all of Israel adopted the custom of sounding the shofar after prayer throughout the month; the Kitzur Shulchan Arukh (128:1) similarly frames the forty days from Rosh Chodesh Elul through Yom Kippur as days of Divine favor and mercy, specially suited for teshuvah, because it was on Rosh Chodesh Elul that Moshe ascended to receive the second Tablets.

The Mishnah Berurah (581:1–3) adds an additional layer of asmakhta, noting that the initials of the pasuk אֲנִי לְדוֹדִי וְדוֹדִי לִי spell אלול, and that its final letters total forty, corresponding to the forty days from Rosh Chodesh Elul through Yom Kippur during which teshuvah is most readily accepted — a period in which one's heart draws near to God and God draws near to accept that teshuvah with love; the Mishnah Berurah (581:2) further records the custom of reciting Mizmor LeDavid (Tehillim 27) morning and evening throughout this period.

On the level of machshava, the Shem MiShmuel (Mishpatim 10:14) explains that during Elul the thirteen Attributes of Mercy are opened to Israel, and — drawing on the Arizal — teaches that every arousal from below is preceded by a Divine arousal from above; the shofar and prayers of Rosh Hashanah are the arousal from below that responds to a prior heavenly arousal, and the roshei teivot of אֲנִי לְדוֹדִי וְדוֹדִי לִי capture this mutual drawing-near that Elul is designed to initiate.

The Shenei Luchot HaBerit (Rosh HaShanah, Ner Mitzva 2) reasons that since Elul is the final month of the year, it is the fitting time to do teshuvah for whatever one has damaged throughout the year, so as not to enter Rosh Hashanah — the Day of Judgment — while still stained by sin, and he finds an allusion to this in the roshei teivot of וּמָל ה' אֱלֹקֶיךָ אֶת לְבָבְךָ וְאֶת לְבַב זַרְעֶךָ, which likewise spell אלול.

Mareh Yechezkel (Shabbat Shuvah 2:2) raises a striking machshava question: the standard explanations of the Elul shofar — awakening to teshuvah and confusing the Satan — apply to the masses, but for Torah scholars who are already engaged in Torah study and thereby breaking the forces of impurity, those reasons do not apply; he concludes that the sounding of the shofar in Elul must therefore carry a deeper, hidden reason, as do all the mitzvot.

The Maamar HaChochmah situates the shofar within a cosmic arc: Maamar HaChochmah (Chelek 1, 6:6) teaches that the first reinforcement of good over evil was achieved through the shofar of Matan Torah, the ultimate repair will be achieved through the great shofar of the future, and the Rosh Hashanah shofar was therefore ordained to strengthen the repair already wrought at Sinai and to prepare for the repair yet to come — a framework that gives the Elul shofar its place within that larger chain; Maamar HaChochmah (Chelek 1, 6:4) adds that the shofar's very power, through its sounding below and its root above, is to sustain the good and subdue the evil.

Amos 3:6

The prophet uses the sounding of the shofar in a city as an image of alarm and response, a central scriptural model for shofar as an instrument that awakens attention.

Pirkei DeRabbi Eliezer 46:2

At the beginning of Elul, God told Moses "Come up to Me on the mountain" (Shemot 24:12), and the shofar was sounded in the camp because Moses ascended to receive the Torah so the people would not err after idolatry; therefore the Sages instituted that the shofar be sounded at the beginning of Elul each year.

Rosh Hashanah 16b

Rosh Hashanah 16b:1

The passage identifies the shofar as a means of arousing people to repentance and presents the liturgical structure of multiple shofar soundings.

and then sound again a tekia and a terua while they are standing in the Amida prayer? He answers: In order to confuse the Satan, for this double blowing of the shofar demonstrates Israel’s love for the mitzva, and this will confuse Satan when he brings his accusations against Israel before the heavenly court, and the Jewish people will receive a favorable judgment. And Rabbi Yitzḥak said, playing on the double meaning of the word meri’in, which can mean either sound a terua or cause misfortune: Any year during which, due to some mishap, the shofar was not sounded at its beginning will suffer evil and misfortune at its end. What is the reason? Because Satan was not confused, and he was able to put forward his accusations, so that the Jewish people would be punished.

Rosh Hashanah 16a

Rosh Hashanah 16a:15

The Talmud discusses why shofar is sounded before and during the Rosh Hashanah prayers, linking the practice to invoking divine remembrance and confusion of the prosecuting force.

And for what reason did the Torah say: Pour water onto the altar in the Temple on the festival of Sukkot? The Holy One, Blessed be He, said: Pour water before Me on the festival of Sukkot so that the rains of the year, which begin to fall after Sukkot, will be blessed for you. And recite before Me on Rosh HaShana verses that mention Kingships, Remembrances, and Shofarot: Kingships so that you will crown Me as King over you; Remembrances so that your remembrance will rise before Me for good; and with what will the remembrance rise? It will rise with the shofar. Similarly, Rabbi Abbahu said: Why does one sound a blast with a shofar made from a ram’s horn on Rosh HaShana? The Holy One, Blessed be He, said: Sound a blast before Me with a shofar made from a ram’s horn, so that I will remember for you the binding of Isaac, son of Abraham, in whose stead a ram was sacrificed, and I will ascribe it to you as if you had bound yourselves before Me.

Rosh Hashanah 33

Rosh Hashanah 33:2

The Sages derive from Leviticus 25:9 that the soundings of Rosh HaShana must be performed with a shofar, and that the phrase "of the seventh month" indicates all obligatory soundings in that month must be alike; the terua sound itself is derived from the verse's mention of "blast of the shofar," while a straight tekia must precede and follow it, each derived from separate mentions of shofar in the same verse.

§ The Sages taught in a baraita: From where is it derived that the soundings of Rosh HaShana must be performed with a shofar? The verse states: “Then you shall make proclamation with the blast of the shofar on the tenth day of the seventh month; on the Day of Atonement you shall make proclamation with the shofar throughout all your land” (Leviticus 25:9). From this I have derived the halakha only with regard to Yom Kippur of the Jubilee Year. From where do I derive that the soundings of Rosh HaShana must also be with a shofar? The verse states: “Of the seventh month.” Since there is no need for the verse to state: “Of the seventh month,” as it already states: “On the Day of Atonement,” what is the meaning when the verse states: “Of the seventh month”? This comes to teach that all the obligatory soundings of the seventh month must be similar to one another. This verse states: “The blast [terua] of the shofar,” indicating that one must sound a terua. The Gemara asks: And from where is it derived that the terua sound is preceded by a straight blast, i.e., a tekia? The verse states: “Then you shall make proclamation with the blast of the shofar [shofar terua]” (Leviticus 25:9), indicating that the terua must be preceded by the basic sound of a shofar, i.e., by the straight blast of a tekia. And from where is it derived that the terua sound is followed by a straight blast? The same verse states again: “You shall make proclamation with the shofar,” which indicates that there must be another tekia after the terua.

The Torah mandates hearing shofar blasts on Rosh Hashanah (as stated in Bamidbar), and the shofar used for both Rosh Hashanah and Yovel must be a ram's horn; all other shofars are invalid; although the Torah does not explicitly describe the type of blast for Rosh Hashanah, the sages derived from the Yovel passages that the blast for Rosh Hashanah parallels that of Yovel through oral tradition.

We have the custom to get up at the break of dawn to recite Selichot and tachanunim from Rosh Chodesh Elul until Yom Kippur. Rema: The minhag of Ashkenazi Jews is not like that. Instead from Rosh Chodesh on we blow the Shofar after Shacharith, and there are some places where they also blow the Shofar after Arvit. We get up at dawn to recite Selichot from the Sunday before Rosh HaShanah on; and if Rosh HaShanah falls on a Monday or Tuesday, we begin reciting Selichot from Sunday the week before Rosh HaShanah. It is forbidden for a mourner to leave his house in order to hear the Selichot at the synagogue, except on the eve of Rosh HaShanah when we extend the Selichot. On that day, the mourner can go to synagogue (Piskei Mahar"i chapter 133). It is important to search for a prayer leader for Selichot and the Days of Awe who is most fit, one who is learned and does good deeds. He should be at least thirty and married. However, any Jew is kosher for this role, as long as he is liked by the community. If he took the role by force, we do not respond "Amen" to him. He has to be able to fulfill everybody's obligation. If he has an enemy (note: one who hates him) and intends not to fulfill his obligation, even those who like him do not fulfill their obligations (Hagahot and Minhagim Yeshanim). There are places where the person who leads Selichot leads all of that day's prayers (Kol Bo).

Kitzur Shulchan Arukh 128:1

Kitzur Shulchan Arukh 128:1

The period from Rosh Chodesh Elul through Yom Kippur constitutes days of Divine favor especially suited for repentance, commemorating Moshe's ascent to Mount Sinai on Rosh Chodesh Elul and his descent on the tenth of Tishrei with atonement completed; in most communities the custom is to fast and recite Yom Kippur Katan prayers on the day before Rosh Chodesh Elul (or on Thursday if Rosh Chodesh falls on Shabbos) to prepare spiritually for repentance. The Ari taught that the word Elul itself—formed from the acronym of "if he did not lie in ambush but Hashem made it happen, then I will provide"—indicates this month as a favorable time for accepting repentance for the year's sins, including inadvertent ones, with additional mystical allusions found in various Torah verses.

Shenei Luchot HaBerit, Aseret HaDibrot, Rosh HaShanah, Ner Mitzva:2

Israel customarily fast from the beginning of Elul until Yom Kippur, days designated for reciting selichot and supplications, and the month's name is an acronym from Devarim 30:6 alluding to circumcision of the heart, since Elul is prepared for repentance; it is reasonable that as the last month of the year, one should repent there for transgressions committed throughout the year so as not to enter Rosh Hashanah—the day of judgment—despised by his evil deeds, but rather repair what has passed in this month.

Mishnah Berurah 581:2

Mishnah Berurah 581:2

The custom in our region is to recite Psalm 27 (Mizmor LeDavid) after the completion of prayer each day from the first of Elul until Yom Kippur (inclusive), morning and evening, followed by Kaddish; on days with Musaf, it is recited after the morning prayer before Ain Kemocha and in the evening after Mincha; in places where it is said after the completion of prayer on Rosh Chodesh, Psalm 103 (Barchi Nafshi) should be recited first, and similarly where it follows the morning prayer, and the custom is also to recite the daily psalm after the morning prayer with the daily psalm preceding it.

Resisei Layla 51:1

Resisei Layla 51:1

On Rosh Hashanah, the shofar's primary function is to crown God as king through the recitation of malkhiyot, thereby completing the divine work of creation, and serves to confuse the Satan and awaken awareness of God's providence; moreover, on Rosh Hashanah—when the world exists in thought but not yet in speech—the shofar is not sounded to recall sins but rather to arouse the future shofar, in which accusation has no place.

Mareh Yechezkel on Torah, Shabbat Shuvah 2:2

The passage states that for scholars of Torah who engage in study and break through spiritual barriers, the shofar blowing in Elul is not necessary for the stated reasons (repentance and preparation), but rather has a hidden mystical reason like all the commandments, since Torah study itself is sufficient for them.

Maamar HaChochmah, Chelek 1 6:6

Maamar HaChochmah, Chelek 1 6:6

The initial cosmic rectification through good was accomplished via the shofar at the giving of Torah ("and the sound of the shofar"), while the final rectification of the future—when good triumphs completely—will also occur through the shofar ("a great shofar will sound"), called "great" because it will be complete in a way the giving of Torah was not; we are commanded to sound the shofar on Rosh Hashanah to strengthen the rectification already made at Sinai and to prepare for the future rectification, with the prayer order arranged accordingly to arouse this properly.

Shem MiShmuel, Mishpatim 10:14

Shem MiShmuel, Mishpatim 10:14

Adar before Nisan functions like Elul before Rosh Hashanah; on Rosh Hashanah Israel awakens the lower arousal through the shofar, prayer, and supplication to evoke upper arousal, yet according to Arizal every lower arousal is preceded by upper arousal from Above, and in Elul thirteen channels of mercy are opened to Israel, bringing forth awakening of love in their hearts to prepare themselves for the service of the seventh month—and thus the enactment to sound the shofar in Elul serves as a vessel to hold and preserve the divine illumination that descends, without which the light would depart as it came.

Teshuvos V'hanhagos 4:133

The custom of blowing the shofar throughout Elul after prayer each day involves sounding Tashrat, though this practice is not mentioned in the Talmud or most early authorities; rather, the source derives from Pirkei de-Rabbi Eliezer, which teaches that on Rosh Chodesh Elul God commanded Moses to ascend the mountain to receive the second tablets.

On this pageThe author discusses the custom of blowing the shofar during the month of Elul, explaining that while the primary historical enactment likely applied only to Rosh Chodesh Elul itself, Ashkenazic custom has expanded this to the entire month. He explains that on Rosh Chodesh they blow a full sequence (Tashrat, Tashat, Tarat) due to halachic doubts regarding the definition of Teruah, while on other days of the month a minimal blowing is sufficient. Additionally, he notes that this custom is specifically communal (performed with a tzibbur) and is done without a blessing.

Nitei Gavriel, Rosh Hashana, perek 4

Starting from the second day of Rosh Chodesh Elul, the shofar is sounded daily after the conclusion of the Shacharit service.

On this pageThe passage rules that starting from the second day of Rosh Chodesh Elul, the shofar is blown daily after the completion of the morning (Shacharit) service. The accompanying commentary details the reasons for this custom, such as inspiring repentance and confusing the Satan, and discusses variations in practice between Ashkenazic and Sephardic communities. The passage outlines different customs regarding when to begin blowing the shofar in Elul, stating that some start on the first day of Rosh Chodesh, while in places without a set custom, one should begin on the second day. It also notes varying practices of blowing after either Mincha or Maariv, including on Motzei Shabbat. The text outlines the laws and customs of Shofar blowing during the month of Elul. It details the specific order of the blasts (some blowing only 'Tashrat' and others blowing 'Tashrat Tashat Tarat'), notes that the Shofar should inspire repentance and is custom to be heard while standing, and rules that one who is in the middle of Shemoneh Esrei should not interrupt their prayer to listen. The author rules that an individual praying privately during the month of Elul should still blow the shofar. Although he previously wrote that this was unnecessary, he cites newly published responsa concluding that since Elul shofar blowing is intended to inspire repentance, it applies to individuals just as Selichot are recited without a quorum.

Revavos Ephraim 3:386

The author explains that no blessing is recited over shofar blowing during Elul because blessings formulated for customs use the language 'על' rather than 'לשמוע'.

On this pageThe author discusses the reasons why no blessing is recited over the shofar blowing during the month of Elul, suggesting that blessings on customs are typically formulated with the prefix 'על' rather than 'לשמוע'. He also brings rabbinic correspondence discussing this ruling and the related halakhot of practicing shofar blowing at night during this period.

Nitei Gavriel, Rosh Hashana, perek 6

During Elul until Yom Kippur, when writing a letter to another person, it is proper to hint at the beginning or end that the recipient merit good writing and sealing in the coming days.

On this pageThis chapter outlines several customs observed during the month of Elul leading up to Yom Kippur. These include writing a blessing for a good year in one's letters, having one's tefillin and mezuzot checked, and focusing on prayers for the repentance and return of those who have strayed from the Torah. Additionally, it states that conducting rabbinical court cases (din Torah) is permitted during this month. The text outlines several practices for the month of Elul and the High Holiday period (Chapter 6, sections 5–8): undertaking a 'fast of speech' (avoiding idle chatter) from Rosh Chodesh Elul until Yom Kippur; fasting on the 17th of Elul (the day the spies died); and refraining from eating nuts from the start of Selichot until Hoshana Rabbah. The text outlines customs for the month of Elul, detailing that walnuts are permitted in cooked or baked dishes if their taste is nullified, though some remain strict until Hoshana Rabbah. It also notes the practices of increasing charity, studying Tikunei Zohar and Tomer Devorah, and avoiding moving into a new home within thirty days of Sukkot (starting from the 15th of Elul).
