Tzelem Elokim: Image, Identity, and Responsibility
Sources explore the classical understanding of humanity's creation in the divine image—from Tanakh through Chazal, the Rishonim, and later thinkers—examining how tzelem encompasses spiritual capacity, intellectual freedom, and human dignity, with implications for equality, the value of life, and ethical conduct.

What the sources say
This question actually bundles three distinct inquiries: how the classical rishonim and acharonim defined tzelem Elokim philosophically, how chassidic sources reframed it in terms of the neshama's literal divinity, and what practical ethical and halachic consequences flow from the doctrine.
Tzelem Elokim in rishonim and acharonim
The pasuk itself introduces the plural consultative language of creation (Bereishit 1:26-27), and Rashi on Bereishit 1:26 reads that plural as God's humble consultation with the angels precisely because man, being in their likeness, might otherwise provoke their jealousy.
Ramban on Bereishit 1:26 and Kli Yakar on Bereishit 1:26, citing Rabbi Yosef Kimchi, explain that man resembles both realms at once — his body drawn from the earth and his spirit from the higher beings that do not die — while Abarbanel on Torah, Bereishit 1:26 and Abarbanel similarly distinguish the earth's contribution of the physical form from God's direct endowment of the intellectual soul.
Sforno on Bereishit 1:26 reads "adam" minimally as simply the species-name of the living being God formed, while Ibn Ezra on Bereishit 1:26 locates tzelem not in bodily form but in dominion — man was given rulership modeled on the wisdom by which God governs, which is why shedding human blood is uniquely culpable.
Sefer HaIkkarim, Maamar 1 24:10 draws from the tzelem doctrine the Torah's own ethical demand: because man bears a form that is "in the likeness of God," he must never demean that form in himself or in another, and must strive to cleave to its heavenly source.
Haamek Davar on Bereishit 1:26 and Haamek Davar (Netziv) stress that man alone was conceived with two natures simultaneously — able to cling to God like an angel while still functioning within the physical world — making him unlike every other species, which possesses only a single uniform nature.
Rav Samson Raphael Hirsch and Rav Samson Raphael Hirsch insist that tzelem Elokim applies to the body no less than the soul: the physical form itself is deemed worthy of a divine vocation, so that sanctifying the body becomes the foundation of all moral refinement, and the demand to resemble God in "demut" means allowing no trait that contradicts the divine midot.
Daas Torah (Rav Yerucham Levovitz) and Daas Torah (Rav Yerucham Levovitz), invoking the Tomer Devorah, teach that true tzelem and demut are realized not through bodily form but through imitating God's actions — specifically the thirteen attributes of mercy — since a person of fine form but corrupt deeds falsifies the image.
Tiferet Yisrael 3:1 and Tiferet Yisrael 24:8 describe the divine soul as granting man a unique, as-yet-unactualized potential unlike any other lower being, warning that one may not use that innate dignity as an excuse for idleness, since the elevated level remains only potential until earned through effort.
Michtav MeEliyahu (Rav Dessler) locates the operative meaning of tzelem in the heart's capacity to "see" God — that is, to host an indwelling sense of His revealed glory — rather than in any grasp of His essence.
Alshich reads one verse to mean that the tzelem Elokim, lost through sin, is restored to the people through the sounding of the shofar in humble submission.
Nefesh HaChayim, Gate I 6:3 and Nefesh HaChayim, Gate I 14:10-12 describe man as the final, integrating creation containing within himself the powers of all the worlds that preceded him, with his inner faculties of action, speech, and thought corresponding to the three levels of soul — nefesh, ruach, and neshama.
Tanya, Part I; Likkutei Amarim 2:1-3 teaches that the second, divine soul of a Jew is literally "a part of God above," compared to a father's breath that carries something of his own inner vitality, so that the neshamah is not merely image but actual divine substance.
Tanya, Part I; Likkutei Amarim 35:4 explains that the Shechinah rests upon the body only through good deeds, since the neshamah by itself — even in a perfect tzaddik — does not fully dissolve into God's light, and the body-as-wick requires the oil of actual mitzvot to be illuminated.
Tanya, Part I; Likkutei Amarim 41:2-3 frames the practical task flowing from this divine indwelling as accepting God's kingship in thought, recognizing that He fills and encompasses all worlds yet chooses to concentrate His kingship uniquely upon each individual, so that one must serve Him as though the world were created for his sake.
Sefat Emet, Bereishit, Bereshit 1 (5631) and Sefat Emet, Bereishit, Bereshit 22:4 describe the divine spark within man as greater than the physical vessel that contains it — just as God's own form, unlike a human seal, exceeds the tablet it is stamped upon — so that the soul, this spark, actually governs and elevates the body.
Likkutei Maamarim, On Shimshon:16 distinguishes tzelem from demut as masculine and feminine aspects of the image, tzelem being an actual extension of the form (like a seal pressed into wax) while demut is mere outward resemblance (like a drawing on a wall).
The Imrei Binah sources (Imrei Binah שער הציצית דף א, ד, Imrei Binah שער הציצית דף ז, א) teach that being made "in Our image" means aligning one's will, wisdom, emotions, thought, speech and deed with their divine counterparts through Torah, mitzvot, self-nullification and especially tzedakah, and they grapple with how tzelem can apply to a bodiless God by proposing that humanity uniquely reflects God's essential light rather than a lesser, veiled illumination.
Sulam on Zohar, Bereshit II 2 explains that just as the world itself was created through the partnership of the attribute of mercy, so too the soul of the first Adam received that same quality of mercy, crowned with supernal lights so that he would be complete in every respect.
Orot, Lights of Israel, Holiness of Israel 3 extends the idea of divine image outward, describing how holiness permeates even the physical and practical dimensions of the world through the one who reflects God's form without riddles, uniquely among the nations.
Berakhot 10a:21 compares God's manner of forming a living being within a being to the inadequacy of human artistry, which cannot animate the forms it fashions, teaching that the wonder of human formation itself is cause for praise of the Creator.
Responsa Benei Banim, Volume IV, Essays 14:3-5 records Rabbi Akiva's teaching that one who sheds blood is considered to have diminished the divine image itself, since the verse grounding the death penalty for murder is tied directly to man's being made "in the image of God."
Several halachic sources root the deference shown to human dignity in this same value: Mishneh Torah, Sabbath 26:23 and Mishneh Torah, Diverse Species 10:29 rule that kevod habriyot overrides rabbinic prohibitions and even some Torah-level restrictions, while Berakhot 19b:9-11 traces this principle's Torah basis to the verse "you shall not deviate," showing how far concern for human dignity extends in practice.
Beit Yosef, Choshen Mishpat 388:7-8 rules that handing a fellow Jew over to a persecutor is forbidden even when doing so would relieve one's own suffering, reflecting the gravity placed on preserving another's life and safety.
Mesillat Yesharim 1:11 teaches that because the world was created for man's use, he stands on a great balance: using the world only in service of his Creator elevates both himself and creation, while being drawn after the world corrupts both — a responsibility tied to his standing as the "Adam HaShalem."
Sefer HaChinukh 430:3 grounds human conduct in imitation of the divine attribute of kindness, since God's own perfection is expressed by His desire to benefit others, a model man is meant to emulate.
Shabbat 128b:4-6 and Beitzah 32b:3-4 extend the ethic of compassion beyond human beings to animals in distress and to those in need of sustenance, associating the willingness to show mercy with being "of the seed of Avraham."
Peninei Halakhah, Simchat Habayit U'Virkhato 10:1 derives from the creation account that tzelem Elokim is revealed specifically through male and female together, grounding the mandate of procreation and joint stewardship of the world in that shared divine image.
Several scan sources describe man as composed of body, soul, and a distinct divine image that confers worth: Chiddushei Aggadot, Nedarim 81 and Chiddushei Aggadot, Nedarim 66 note that God sustains a person throughout life because of this composite nature, Chiddushei Aggadot, Sanhedrin 111 states that being created in God's image is what makes a person worthy of the World to Come, Chiddushei Aggadot, Shabbat 127 links this honor to the mitzvah of welcoming guests as an honor to the divine image, and Nishmat Shabbat vol 1:175 invokes tzelem Elokim together with the verse that "Hashem has made everything for His purpose" to reject a practice discussed there.
Netivot Olam, Netiv Ha'Avodah 1:1 teaches that divine service is not for God's benefit but solely for man's own, implying that the human being's purpose and value are the central concern of the service relationship rather than any need on God's part.
Human beings are created בצלם אלהים, in the image and likeness of God. The passage presents this status as universal and connects it with dominion and responsibility within creation.

The Mishnah teaches that Adam was created alone so that no one can claim superior ancestry, and that destroying one life is like destroying an entire world. It grounds the practical equality and inviolable value of every person in Adam's creation.

Sanhedrin 38a
Sanhedrin 38a:8-10
The sugya discusses Adam's unique creation and the reasons humanity began with one person, including peace among people and preventing claims of superiority. It gives a theological basis for human equality and responsibility.
§ The mishna teaches: Therefore, Adam the first man was created alone. The Sages taught in a baraita: Adam was created alone, and for what reason? So that the heretics will not say: There are many authorities in Heaven, and each created a different person. Alternatively, Adam was created alone due to the righteous and due to the wicked. It was so that the righteous will not say: We are the children of the righteous, and righteousness is natural for us, so there is no need for us to exert ourselves to be righteous, and so that the wicked will not say: We are the children of the wicked and cannot change our ways. The baraita continues: Alternatively, he was created alone due to the families, so that the families will not quarrel with each other, each one boasting of the heritage of their progenitor. And if now that Adam was created alone, families still quarrel and each family claims superiority, if there were two people created initially, all the more so would they do this. Alternatively, he was created alone due to the robbers and due to those who take by force that which is not theirs, as the feeling of fraternity among all people, having descended from the same forefather, will limit crime. And if now that Adam was created alone, criminals still rob and take by force that which is not theirs, if there were two people created initially, all the more so would this be the case. The mishna teaches: And this serves to tell of the greatness of the Holy One, Blessed be He, as when a person stamps several coins with one seal, they are all similar to each other. But the supreme King of kings, the Holy One, Blessed be He, stamped all people with the seal of Adam the first man, as all are his offspring, and not one of them is similar to another. The Sages taught in a baraita (Tosefta 8:5): The fact that Adam the first man was created alone serves to declare the greatness of the supreme King of kings, the Holy One, Blessed be He, as a person stamps several coins with one seal, and they are all similar to each other. But the Holy One, Blessed be He, stamps all people with the seal of Adam the first man, and not one of them is similar to another. As it is stated: “It is changed like clay under the seal and they stand as a garment” (Job 38:14). The verse describes people as being created “under the seal,” but their external appearance is different, just as garments can differ in appearance.
The sages teach that one should not pray for another person's death, invoking the principle that God's mercies extend to all His creatures. The passage is a practical ethical restraint against treating another life as disposable.
Other interpretations of this verse exist. The Gemara relates how Rav Shimi bar Ukva, and some say Mar Ukva, would regularly study before Rabbi Shimon ben Pazi, who was well versed in aggada and would arrange the aggada before Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi. Once, Rabbi Shimon ben Pazi said to him: What is the meaning of that which is written: “Bless the Lord, my soul, and all that is within me bless His Holy name”? Rav Shimi bar Ukva said to Rabbi Shimon ben Pazi: Come and see that the attribute of the Holy One, Blessed be He, is not like the attribute of flesh and blood, as this verse praises the formation of man in his mother’s womb. The attribute of flesh and blood is such that he shapes a form on the wall for all to see, yet he cannot instill it with a spirit and soul, bowels and intestines. While the Holy One, Blessed be He, is not so, as God shapes one form within another form, a child in its mother’s womb, and instills it with spirit and soul, bowels and intestines. And this is the explanation of what Hannah said with regard to the birth of Samuel: “There is none holy like the Lord, for there is none like You, and there is no Rock like our God” (I Samuel 2:2). This did not satisfy Rav Shimi bar Ukva, who said to Rabbi Shimon ben Pazi: I meant to say to you as follows: Corresponding to whom did David say these five instance of “Bless the Lord, O my soul”? He answered him: He said them about none other than the Holy One, Blessed be He, and corresponding to the soul, as the verse refers to the relationship between man’s soul and God. The five instances of “Bless the Lord, O my soul” correspond to the five parallels between the soul in man’s body and God’s power in His world. Just as the Holy One, Blessed be He, fills the entire world, so too the soul fills the entire body. Just as the Holy One, Blessed be He, sees but is not seen, so too does the soul see, but is not seen. Just as the Holy One, Blessed be He, sustains the entire world, so too the soul sustains the entire body. Just as the Holy One, Blessed be He, is pure, so too is the soul pure. Just as the Holy One, Blessed be He, resides in a chamber within a chamber, in His inner sanctum, so too the soul resides in a chamber within a chamber, in the innermost recesses of the body. Therefore, that which has these five characteristics, the soul, should come and praise He Who has these five characteristics.
The Gemara describes Adam’s extraordinary stature and subsequent diminution, placing humanity within a cosmic hierarchy while also emphasizing Adam’s unique created dignity and responsibility.
The creation of humanity is discussed through the tension among divine attributes, portraying Adam as a being of profound moral and theological significance within creation.
Chachmei Bavel explain that human dignity overrides rabbinic decrees, which are grounded in the Torah prohibition of “you shall not deviate,” because the Sages suspended their own enactments when they conflict with human dignity.
The Gemara cites an additional proof from a baraita: Come and hear: Great is human dignity, as it overrides a prohibition in the Torah. The Gemara asks: Why? Let us also say here: “There is neither wisdom, nor understanding, nor counsel against the Lord.” Rav bar Shaba interpreted this prohibition, which is overridden by human dignity, before Rav Kahana as referring to the prohibition of: “According to the Torah taught to you and the ruling handed down to you, you shall do, you shall not deviate to the left or the right from that which they tell you” (Deuteronomy 17:11). The Yeshiva students laughed at him, as the prohibition of “you shall not deviate” is by Torah law, like all other Torah prohibitions. Why should human dignity override it any more than any other Torah prohibition? Rav Kahana replied to them: A great man has spoken, do not laugh at him. The Sages based all rabbinic law on the prohibition of “you shall not deviate”; however, due to concern for human dignity, the Sages permitted suspension of rabbinic law in cases where the two collide. All rabbinic decrees are predicated on the mitzva in the Torah to heed the judges in each generation and to never stray from their words. Therefore, when the Sages suspend a decree in the interest of preserving human dignity, human dignity is overriding a Torah prohibition. In any case, it only overrides rabbinic decrees.
Chachmei Bavel state that compassion for God’s creatures identifies a person as a descendant of Avraham Avinu, while those lacking compassion—illustrated by wealthy Babylonian Jews who refused financial or food assistance—are considered disconnected from that lineage and destined for Gehenna.
§ After citing one teaching in the name of Rav Natan bar Abba, the Gemara quotes a few more statements attributed to the same scholar. Since he is not mentioned often, Rav Natan’s teachings are arranged together, so that they can be remembered more easily. Rav Natan bar Abba said that Rav said: The wealthy Jews of Babylonia will descend to Gehenna because they do not have compassion on others. This is illustrated by incidents such as this: Shabbetai bar Marinus happened to come to Babylonia. He requested their participation in a business venture, to lend him money and receive half the profits in return, and they did not give it to him. Furthermore, when he asked them to sustain him with food, they likewise refused to sustain him. He said: These wealthy people are not descendants of our forefathers, but they came from the mixed multitude, as it is written: “And show you compassion, and have compassion upon you, and multiply you, as He has sworn to your fathers” (Deuteronomy 13:18), from which it is derived: Anyone who has compassion for God’s creatures, it is known that he is of the descendants of Abraham, our father, and anyone who does not have compassion for God’s creatures, it is known that he is not of the descendants of Abraham, our father. Since these wealthy Babylonians do not have compassion on people, clearly they are not descended from Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Shabbat 128b:4-6
Chachmei Bavel distinguish between cases of an animal that fell into an aqueduct on Shabbat: when possible, one feeds it in place so it will not die, but when feeding it is impossible, one may bring cushions and blankets to place beneath it so it can emerge.
GEMARA: Rav Yehuda said that Rav said: With regard to an animal that fell into an aqueduct, one brings cushions and blankets, and throws them into the water ditch, and places them beneath the animal in the aqueduct. And if the animal thereby emerges, it emerges. The Gemara raises an objection from a Tosefta: With regard to an animal that fell into an aqueduct on Shabbat, one provides it with sustenance in its place so that it will not die. This implies that providing it with sustenance, yes, that is permitted, providing it with cushions and blankets, no, that it is prohibited. The Gemara answers: This is not difficult, as there is room to distinguish between the cases. This, the Tosefta in which it was taught that one provides the animal with sustenance, is referring to a case where it is possible to provide it with sustenance. That, the mishna in which Rav said that one brings cushions and blankets, is referring to a case where it is impossible to provide it with sustenance. Where it is possible to provide it with sustenance, yes, he does so. And if it is not possible to provide it with sustenance, he brings cushions and blankets and places them beneath the animal.
Rashi explains the plural language of 'Let us make man' as God consulting the heavenly beings, teaching humility and the value of seeking counsel even when one possesses authority.
Ramban distinguishes the image and likeness from bodily form and relates tzelem to the spiritual-intellectual nature that enables human beings to exercise choice and rule over the lower world.
Sforno interprets tzelem as a capacity for intelligent, purposeful action and likeness as a form of resemblance to God through understanding and free choice, especially in directing oneself toward a divine purpose.
Ibn Ezra emphasizes the human capacity for understanding and governance, interpreting the divine image in relation to the special intellectual power that distinguishes humanity from other creatures.
This passage explains that humans were created last in the order of existence because they represent the culmination and perfection of all prior forms (inanimate matter, plants, animals, and intellects), with each lower form preparing the next higher one, and humans alone combine the intellectual form with all preceding levels of creation in a hierarchical chain of being that flows from and returns to God.
The passage explains tzelem Elokim as humanity’s embodied reception of all the world’s perfections, which exist in God in unified, abstract form and are reflected in human nature; it may also refer to a shadow-like imprint or to following God like a shadow.
Albo explains that “this is the book of the generations of Adam,” who was created in God’s likeness, teaches that each person bears a human form resembling God and must therefore avoid degrading it in oneself or others, striving instead to preserve it and cleave to the upper beings from which it was hewn.
Rambam states that human dignity permits moving a decomposed corpse to a karmelit on Shabbat when it is disgracing the deceased and distressing the living, overriding the Torah prohibition of “Do not turn aside”; if the living can leave by another route, however, they leave the corpse in place and depart.
Rambam states that rabbinic prohibitions, despite the Torah command “לא תסור,” are overridden by human dignity; therefore, one wearing rabbinically prohibited shaatnez should wait until reaching home to remove it, whereas Torah-prohibited shaatnez must be removed immediately.
Sefer HaChinukh 430:3
The passage explains that God created humanity and placed it in control of the earth, while His perfect goodness consists in benefiting His creatures; blessings therefore awaken recognition that all goodness comes from Him, followed by requests for needs such as wisdom, forgiveness, healing, and wealth, and concluding acknowledgment that these blessings come from Him.
The matter is known and famous that God, may He be blessed, moves all that exists and created man and put him in control over the earth and over every thing that is in it. And it is from His traits, blessed be He, that He is of much kindness and that He desires the good of His creatures, and [so] He wants them to be fitting and meriting to receive goodness from Him. And this is really from His perfection, may He be blessed. As only one who gives to others besides himself can be called perfect in the good — there is no doubt about this to any intelligent person. And since [we are in] agreement [about] this, that we know that it is obligatory from the perfection of His goodness, that His desire is to pour down His blessing upon us, we shall say that the matter of the blessing that we say in front of Him is only a mention to arouse ourselves through the words of our mouths that He is the blessed One, and the blessed One that contains all of the goodnesses. And through this good arousal of ourselves and the designation of our thoughts to admit to Him that all of the goodnesses are included in Him and He is the King over them, to send them to all that He desires, we merit through this good action to bring from His blessings upon us. And after this mention and this admission in front of Him, we request from Him that which we need [of] knowledge, or the pardon of our iniquities, or healing, or wealth or anything. And so [too,] after the request from Him, we repeat and admit to Him about this, to say that it comes to us from Him. And this is the opening and the conclusion of the blessings. [The reason for the latter is that we not] be considered like a slave who took a reward from his master and goes away without permission, like a thief. And it comes out according to the premise [created by] this reason that “blessed” is an adjective, meaning to say it is an admission to Him that He contains all of the blessings. And [about] the expression, “may He be blessed,” that we always mention — which is [in] the reflexive case — we can say that the intention of it is that we are supplicating to Him that it be His will in front of Him to cause the hearts of His creatures to be prepared in front of Him that all should admit to Him and praise Him. And this is the explanation of “may He be blessed,” meaning to say, “It should be Your will in front of You, that all people of the world will relate all blessing to You and admit that everything in the world emanates from You,” and that His will be completed — as He wants to do good, as we have said. And the fulfillment of the Will is the purpose of all that ask. And behold, we have found an explanation even for the puzzling expression of “may He be blessed.” And from this understanding (other versions: root), that which they, may their memory be blessed, said (Chullin 60b) that the Holy One, blessed be He, craves the prayers of the righteous [is] to say that His desire is that they do an act through which they will merit in front of Him and bring down from His goodness upon them; as He is One Who desires to do kindness and to give from His blessing upon them, from the good of His perfection, as is written. And this is the great root to all the good that a man does in this world — that his reward from God [is because] he fulfills His desire, in that He wants the good of the creatures.
Tiferet Yisrael 3:1
Maharal presents the human being as a distinctive synthesis of physical and spiritual dimensions, whose elevated form is expressed through intellect and Torah. Tzelem is not mere appearance but a metaphysical capacity for higher completion.
Maharal describes avodah as the proper orientation of the human being toward God. It offers a practical expression of tzelem: ordering one's powers so that the human person serves a transcendent purpose rather than instinct or ego.
Nefesh HaChayim, Gate I 14:10-12
The human being is described as a microcosm whose inner powers correspond to the ordered worlds. The practical consequence is disciplined cultivation of thought, speech, and deed as channels through which the tzelem is expressed.
And these three aspects: action, speech and thought, they are the three general inner aspects of man that are the three aspects: soul-Neffesh, soul-Ruakh and soul-Neshama. For action, it is in the category of Neffesh, as is written (Bamidbar 15:30): “and the Neffesh that you shall make,” (Vayikra 18:29) “the Neffesh [plural] who do...” and many others, such as (Devarim 12:23) “for the blood is the Neffesh”, that the Neffesh inhabits and clothes itself in man’s blood, and therefore the crux of attributing its abode to the liver is that it is full of blood. The circulation of blood in all the parts and divisions of the limbs, the implements of action, is what provides them with vital ability and arousal, so that they will be able to enact and to perform what is in their potential. If the circulation of blood should cease from a limb, that limb will wither and won’t have the ability to do anything, and it is a dead limb. And speech, it is in the category of Ruakh, as is written (Shmuel Bet 23:2): “God’s spirit-Ruakh spoke within me,” and (Yeshayahu 11:4) “with the spirit-Ruakh of his lips,” and as Onkeloos translated on the verse (Bereshit 2:7): “and the man became a living soul-Neffesh”: “a speaking spirit-Ruakh”. And so it appears to the eye that with each speech action, a person’s mouth emits a spiritand vapor. And the abode of the Ruakh, its essence and origin is in the heart, for speech’s spirit and vapor, its essence and origin arises from the heart. And thought, it is in the category of the Neshama. She teaches man knowledge and understanding via the holy Torah, and therefore the origin of its abode is in the brain, the tool of thought, and she is the highest category of them all. And so they said in Bereshit Rabba, chapter 14: “She is called by five names...”, “the Neffesh is the blood..., Ruakh..., Neshama is the nature of the creature”— [“nature”] meaning his knowledge and thoughts, as was explained by the Arukh and RaSh”Y (OBM).
Nefesh HaChayim, Gate I 6:3
Nefesh HaChayim explains the human soul as a spiritual structure corresponding to higher worlds and possessing creative influence through thought, speech, and action. Tzelem thus entails responsibility: human conduct affects the spiritual order.
So the essential point of the matter, is that He (blessed be His name), after He created all the worlds, created man, last of all creations, an amazing creation, the final integrating power for all the camps, that included in him all of the highest levels of amazing lights, and worlds, and lofty palaces that preceded him, and every pattern of lofty honor according to the design of the parts of the Vehicle [*], and all the detailed powers found in all the upper and lower worlds. All of them gave him power and a part of their essence during his assembly, and were integrated into him in a number of the details of the powers that are within him. As they said in the Zohar (Yitro 75b): “When the Holy One (blessed be He) created man, he arranged within him all of the likenesses of the heavenly secrets of the supernal world, and all the likeness of the lower secrets of the lower world, and all of them are engraved in man, for he stands in the image of God-Elohi”m.” Refer there [for more detail]. And this is all of man, that every specific power in him corresponds to one world and a specific power from the Stature. The Stature is the most general description of the powers and worlds, organized (as it were) based on the pattern of man’s upright form, as will be explained (God willing) in Gate 2, chapter 5. Annotation: And this was before the sin. He was comprised only of all the worlds and powers of holiness alone, and not from the powers of evil. However, after the sin, the powers ofimpurity and evil were also integrated and mixed into him. And as a result, they were also mixed by this into the worlds, based on the fact that he is comprised of and integrates them all, and they are aroused and change according to the inclination of his actions; this is the matter of the Tree of the Knowing Good and Evil.
Ramchal frames human existence around recognizing one's true purpose: delighting in God through preparation and service in this world. As a practical reading of tzelem, human dignity is fulfilled by purposeful self-mastery and attachment to the divine.
If you look deeper into the matter, you will see that this world was created for man's use. But, behold man stands on a great balance. For if he is drawn after the world and distances from his Creator, behold, he corrupts himself and corrupts the world with him. But if he rules over himself and clings to his Creator, and uses the world only as an aid to serve his Creator - then he elevates himself and elevates the world with him. For all creations are greatly elevated when they serve the "Adam HaShalem" (whole/perfect man) who is sanctified with the holiness of the blessed G-d. Our sages roused us to this fundamental principle in Midrash Kohelet saying: "see the work of G-d." (Ecc. 7:13), "when the Holy One, Blessed be He, created Adam, He took him and led him to pass before all the trees of the Garden of Eden and said to him: 'see how beautiful and excellent are my works. All that I have created, I have created for your sake. Be careful that you do not become corrupt and destroy My world.'" To summarize what we have learned, the primary [purpose] of man's existence in this world is solely to fulfill the commandments, serve [G-d] and stand up to trials.
The passage states that “in the image of Elokim” means that all of nature is included in it, since from the outset nature was designated by the name Elokim.
The passage emphasizes that the human body, including its drives and powers, was created in the divine image and is suited to a divine purpose; therefore, sanctifying and preserving the body’s divine image is foundational to human morality and a prerequisite for spiritual elevation.
The passage explains that “in Our image” refers to divine kindness, mercy, truth, justice, and holiness being expressed through the human form, while “according to Our likeness” means that a person is meant to resemble God, reject traits contrary to divine attributes, and strive for holiness.
Shelah states that the human soul derives from the expansion of the Divine Name יהוה and that the body’s form is likewise marked by it, explaining the human צלם and דמות; recognizing this should inspire a person to turn from evil, do good, and sanctify himself, since humanity is the purpose of creation.
Netziv states that human beings differ from all other species, which are uniform in their purpose and nature, because humanity was created with two potential dispositions, one being attachment to God and service on earth like an angel in heaven.
Shelah teaches that the Torah’s references to God’s hand, foot, ear, and eye signify profound inner realities through which divine influence reaches creation, not bodily forms resembling human limbs; likewise, being created b’tzelem and in God’s likeness does not mean that human features mirror God’s physically.
Maharal explains that Moses’ attachment to the heavenly Throne brought him the radiance and cloud of the One seated upon it: radiance corresponds to the soul, while cloud corresponds to the body, which is transient.
Reb Tzadok distinguishes between “b’tzalmenu” as the imprint of the divine force itself and “kidmutenu” as merely its likeness reflected in human activity, explaining that a person may perceive God through analogy or, more profoundly, recognize that every bodily movement and action is itself entirely empowered by God and can become a yichud when this is consciously understood.

The Shelah's extended treatment of holiness in eating — the table as an altar and food as a vehicle for drawing out divine vitality.
Kli Yakar explains that man’s צלם ודמות reflect both origins: his body resembles the earth, while his soul resembles the heavenly beings; the phrase “Let us make” emphasizes God’s sovereignty revealed through creating man for His glory, and the passage notes that God appears to prophets in human-like forms.
Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. Ramban wrote in the name of Rabbi David Kimchi that the Holy One, blessed be He, said to the earth “Let us — you and I — make [man],” because the earth contributed its material yield just as it did for other living creatures, while the Holy One, blessed be He, placed within him the spiritual portion. Thus, in our image, after our likeness means that he [man] would resemble both of them — in his body resembling the earth, and in his soul resembling the heavenly beings. Regarding what is written “for in God’s image He made man”: To tell of the wonder by which man is distinguished from other living beings. Many have agreed with this interpretation, and there are many additional interpretations regarding the saying let us make and regarding the matter of image and likeness. And it is correct to say that the language let us make was used to demonstrate His sovereignty specifically when He created man, to teach that the essence of His kingship is seen in creation, through man whom He formed for His glory. And regarding the matter of image and likeness, even though it is written To what likeness can you compare Him? (Isaiah 40:18) and it is written To whom then will you liken Me, that I should be equal? (Isaiah 40:25), nevertheless, we find that the Holy One, blessed be He, appears to His prophets in the likeness of human form, for at Mount Sinai He appeared as an elder sitting in session, and at the sea He appeared as a warrior, and it is written and upon the throne was a likeness as the appearance of a man (Ezekiel 1:26). For in all these likenesses He regularly appears, and it is possible that it was regarding this that He said in Our image, after Our likeness, even though in truth He has no form, and it is the glory of God to conceal a matter (Proverbs 25:2). And they shall rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the sky and the cattle. Later on (Genesis 9:2), the order is reversed, as it states: And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth and upon every bird of the sky and upon all the fish of the sea. Similarly, David reversed the order and said (Psalms 8:7-8): You have made him have dominion over Your handiwork; You have placed everything beneath his feet. Sheep and cattle, all of them, and also the beasts of the field; the birds of the sky and the fish of the sea, traversing the paths of the seas. Furthermore, here it says “and they shall rule,” while in Genesis it doesn’t mention ruling, and similarly David says You have made him have dominion. This change [in both order and terminology] surely means something [significant].
Shelah explains that human limbs are symbolic counterparts of spiritual “limbs” in the upper chariot, though there is no similarity of essence or form, and that by purifying and perfecting a limb through the mitzvot associated with it, a person can make it a chariot for the corresponding higher spiritual reality.

The passage explores how “נעשה אדם בצלמנו כדמותנו” can apply when God has no body or form, proposing that humanity uniquely reflects God’s essential light rather than merely the lesser, veiled illumination through which other worlds were created.

The passage explains that being created “in Our image” means aligning one’s will, wisdom, emotions, thought, speech, and actions with their Divine counterparts through Torah, mitzvot, humility, attachment to Hashem’s attributes, and especially tzedakah, which sustains the lowly and parallels Divine bestowal.

Beit Yosef, Choshen Mishpat 388:7-8
Joseph Karo explains that it is forbidden to hand a fellow Jew over to an oppressor, whether concerning his person or property, even if he is wicked, commits sins, or causes distress; instead, one should remain silent, pray, and attend the beit midrash until the persecutors disappear, and whoever hands over a Jew has no share in Olam Ha-Ba.

The Alter Rebbe distinguishes the divine soul, described as ממש חלק אלוה ממעל ממש, from the animal soul. Tzelem is developed as a divine-oriented inner capacity that gives the person the ability to know God and transform embodied life.
The second soul of a Jew is truly a part of G–d above, as it is written, “He breathed into his nostrils a soul of life,” and “You have breathed it [the soul] into me.” And it is written in the Zohar, “He who blows, blows from within him,” that is to say, from his inwardness and his innermost, for it is something of his internal and innermost vitality that man emits through exhaling with force. So, allegorically speaking, have the souls of Jews risen in the [Divine] thought, as it is written, “My firstborn son is Israel,” and “You are the children of the L–rd your G–d.” That is to say, just as a child is derived from his father’s brain, so—to use an anthropomorphism—the soul of each Israelite is derived from His thought and wisdom, blessed be He. For He is wise—but not through a knowable wisdom, because He and His wisdom are one; and as Maimonides says NOTE: And the Sages of the Kabbalah have agreed with him as is stated in Pardes of Rabbi Moshe Cordovero. Also according to the Kabbalah of the Arizal this is substantiated in the mystic principle of the “clothing of the light” of the En Sof, blessed is He, through numerous contractions within the vessels of chabad of [the world of] Atzilut (Emanation), but no higher than that. For, as is explained elsewhere, the En Sof, blessed is He, is infinitely exalted over, and transcends, the essence and level of chabad, which in relation to Him are regarded as a material action, as is written, “You have made them all with wisdom.”
Tanya, Part I; Likkutei Amarim 35:4
Tanya explains that the purpose of the soul's descent is not escape from the physical but the indwelling of divine presence through Torah and mitzvot. The practical implication of tzelem is to refine and elevate ordinary material action.
The explanation of this figure, whereby the light of the Shechinah is compared to the flame of a lamp which produces no light nor clings to the wick without oil, and likewise the Shechinah does not rest on a man’s body, which is likened to a wick, except through good deeds alone, and it is not sufficient that his soul (neshamah), which is a part of G–dliness from Above, should act for him as oil to the wick—is clear and understandable to every intelligent person. It is that the neshamah of a person—even if he be a perfect tzaddik serving G–d with fear and love of delights—does not, nevertheless, completely dissolve itself out of existence so as to be truly nullified and absorbed into the light of G–d to the extent of becoming one and the same absolutely, but the person remains an entity apart, one who fears G–d and loves Him. It is different, however, with the commandments and good deeds, which are His will, blessed be He. His will, blessed be He, is the source of life for all the worlds and creatures, flowing down to them through many contractions (tzimtzumim) and the concealment of the Countenance of the will of the Supreme One, blessed is He, and the recession of the levels, until it was made possible for creatures to come into being ex nihilo, separate beings that should not lose their identity, as discussed above. The commandments, however, are different in that they are His innermost will, blessed be He, without any concealment of the Countenance whatsoever; the vitality that is in them [therefore] is in no way a separate, independent thing, but is united and absorbed in His will, blessed be He, and they become truly one with a perfect union. However, in order to draw the light and effulgence of the Shechinah also over his body and animal soul, i.e., on the vital spirit clothed in the physical body, he needs to fulfill the practical commandments which are performed by the body itself. For then the very energy of the body itself which is engaged in this action is absorbed in the Divine light and in His will and is united with Him in a perfect union. This is the third garment of the divine soul. Thereby also the energy of the vital spirit in the physical body, originating in the kelipat nogah, is transformed from evil to good and is actually absorbed into holiness like the divine soul itself, since it is this [animal soul] that carries out and performs the act of the commandment, because without it the divine soul could not have been acting through the body at all, for it is spiritual while the body is material and coarse. The intermediary linking them is the vital animal soul, which is clothed in the human blood, in the heart, and in all the body.
Tanya, Part I; Likkutei Amarim 41:2-3
Tanya describes awareness of God's presence and the fear of Heaven as motivating every action. This gives a daily discipline for living as a tzelem: acting with conscious reverence rather than automatic impulse.
This means that he should at least contemplate in his thought on the greatness of the En Sof, blessed is He, and on His Kingship, which extends to all worlds, both higher and lower, and that “He fills all worlds and encompasses all worlds,” as is written, “Do I not fill heaven and earth?” Yet He leaves both the higher and lower [worlds] and uniquely bestows His Kingdom upon His people Israel, in general, and upon him in particular, as, indeed, a man is obliged to say, “For my sake was the world created.” And on his part, he accepts His Kingdom upon himself, that He be King over him, to serve Him and do His will in all kinds of servile work. “And, behold, G–d stands over him,” and “The whole world is full of His glory,” and He looks upon him and “Searches his reins and heart” [to see] if he is serving Him as is fitting. Therefore he must serve in His presence with awe and fear like one standing before the king.
The passage explains that creation's purpose was to reveal God's goodness in the world, and this is completed through Shabbat when all creation returns to unity with the divine source, and similarly human action according to Torah's power completes creation by revealing the divine life-force within all deeds.
Sfas Emes explains that the divine spark placed within every created thing, especially the soul within a person, is greater than its physical form, elevating and guiding the body; this divine imprint is expressed through the covenant of circumcision.
Rav Kook describes Israel's spiritual distinctiveness as rooted in an intrinsic holiness that seeks expression in life. In the broader tzelem framework, this offers a collective and vocational extension of human divine likeness: holiness must become embodied in culture and conduct.

Daas Torah (Rav Yerucham Levovitz)
The passage interprets being created b’tzelem Elokim to mean that a person’s very essence is a “shadow” of the Creator, explaining through the מכילתא’s account of a creature dying upon contact with a bird’s shadow that a shadow is a real, positive embodiment of its source rather than mere absence.
Michtav MeEliyahu (Rav Dessler)
The passage explains that “ראשית חכמה יראת ה'” means that the heart’s initial perception is awe, and that perceiving God in one’s heart signifies the indwelling of the Shechinah; this refers not to apprehension of God’s essence, which is unknowable, but to the revelation of His glory—His names—in the heart of the righteous.
The passage explains, citing Tomer Devorah, that being created in the Divine image requires resembling God through one’s actions—especially the thirteen attributes of mercy—rather than merely possessing a physical resemblance, and connects this to the mitzvah of walking in His ways.
Sulam’s passage states that Adam’s soul was created with the same integration of mercy associated with Binah as the world, enabling him to attain its supernal lights; he was crowned with higher crowns, formed with the world’s six directions, and created in a higher likeness that caused all beings to tremble and fear before him.
Kook explains that “in His image” refers to the body as a reflection of the Divine, while “likeness” refers to the spiritual soul, which is eternal and is meant to emulate God through deeds such as showing mercy.
Kook explains that the mitzvah of peru u’revu serves not only the natural purpose of sustaining the world but also awakens concern for one’s eternal personal existence and cultivates compassion and mercy, which encompass all good traits; this is connected to “בדמות אלהים,” understood through the relationship between demut and middot, so neglecting the mitzvah diminishes that image by preventing the proper development of good character.

Otzrot HaRaayah, Volume 6, Part ב 107:47
Kook states that just as a person must adapt to the material laws governing nature, so must one adapt—especially—to the spiritual laws governing all reality, with divine attachment in every path, deed, feeling, and thought as both the source and goal of this adaptation.
Kook describes the human being as composed of poetic feeling and imagination alongside penetrating intellectual judgment, portraying men as inclined toward intellect and women toward feeling and refined taste, with each faculty reaching its fullest beneficial expression when given its own proper sphere.
Otzrot HaRaayah, Volume 6, Part ב 93:8
Kook describes the human soul, particularly its will and spiritual imitation, as the small part of creation left incomplete and entrusted to humanity to perfect, thereby completing all creation and manifesting the glory of the heavenly kingdom.
Contemporary Halakhic Problems, Vol IV, Chapter IX Experimental Procedures, The Concept of Refu'ah Bedukah
The passage presents the creation of Adam as teaching that each human life has supreme, intrinsic value: destroying one life is likened to destroying an entire world, while saving one life is likened to saving an entire world.
Judaism teaches that the value of human life is supreme and takes precedence over virtually all other considerations. This attitude is most eloquently summed up in a talmudic passage, Sanhedrin 37a, regarding the creation of Adam: "Therefore only a single human being was created in the world, to teach that if any person has caused a single soul of Israel to perish, Scripture regards him as if he had caused an entire world to perish; and if any human being saves a single soul of Israel Scripture regards him as if he had saved an entire world." Human life is not a good to be preserved as a condition of other values but an absolute, basic and precious good in its own right.
Responsa Benei Banim, Volume IV, Essays 14:3-5
The passage explains the severity of murder by teaching that killing a person created in the divine image is like diminishing the image of God; accordingly, “Elokim” in the phrase refers to the Holy One.
The passage teaches that being created in the Divine image is expressed through the unified partnership of man and woman, whose purposes are procreation and responsible stewardship of the world; it further explains that Adam was initially created as one being containing male and female aspects, and was charged with cultivating and guarding the world.
