The Alter Rebbe integrates halakhic analysis with the spiritual significance of tefillin, offering a Hasidic model in which kabbalistic meaning deepens—but does not simply replace—the legal requirements.

Sha'arei Kedusha, Part 3 7:7
Vital describes holiness, prophecy, and the disciplined spiritual life, emphasizing that mystical attainment depends on ethical and practical preparation rather than functioning as an unrestricted alternative to halakhic observance.
The second is through engaging in Torah study or fulfilling a particular mitzvah, about which our sages, of blessed memory, explained, “Whoever fulfills one commandment, acquires one advocate for himself,” meaning that an angel is formed by it, in the most literal sense. However, this is on condition that he fulfills it constantly and does so with much devotional intent (Kavanah), being careful to fulfill it meticulously according to Torah law (Halachah). In such a case, the angel that was formed through the mitzvah or the Torah study can come and be revealed to him. This explains the matter found in various holy books about angels who are revealed to the righteous and are called Maggidim (talkers). The caveat to this, is that if the mitzvah was not fulfilled meticulously, precisely according to its laws (Halachah), the Maggid angel will have a mixture of good and evil, truth and false. Now, the path we have set forth is a straightforward path, being that one is not engaging in any oaths, nor is he attempting to force matters Above. Rather, they are attained solely through the power of good deeds and holiness. It thus is certain that if one follows this path, the pure and Holy Spirit of Ru’ach HaKodesh will rest upon him, without any admixture of good and evil whatsoever. However, this is not so if a person attempts to force matters Above, or seeks to make use of oaths or prayers and unifications (Yichudim), wherein if he even makes the slightest error, he can possibly be inviting external matters to become intermingled.

Shulchan Arukh, Orach Chayim 25:11
The passage presents multiple opinions and customs regarding the order of donning tefillin, the timing of their removal during the prayer service, and variations by location and day, including a kabbalistic view that one should delay removal until after reciting specific prayers and passages.
After tying the arm tefillin to the arm, one should put on the head tefillin before winding the strap around the arm. There is an opinion who forbids removing the head-tefillin from the bag before putting on the arm-tefillin. Rem"a: Even if they are both already in front of him, outside of the bag, one should not unwrap the head tefillin until after the arm tefillin is on [Mahari"a and Mahar"i ben Chabib]. There is an opinion who says to put on the arm-tefillin sitting and the head tefillin standing [Agur in the name of the Zohar, siman 84] but in our countries, this is not the custom, rather we do both standing. The widespread custom is to refrain from removing one's Tefillin until after the recital of "Kedushat U'va Letzion." [There is an opinion based on Kabbala to not remove one's Tefillin until one has recited the three Kedushot and the four Kaddishim, meaning after Kaddish Yatom and this is practice of those who are scrupulous [with mitzvos].] On a day where there is the reading of the Sefer Torah, the custom is to not remove them until after the Sefer Torah is returned to the Heichal. Rem"a: This refers to a place where the Sefer Torah is returned after U'va Letzion. However, according to the custom of our province where we return the Sefer Torah right after the reading , one should not remove them [at that point], rather he should do it like on all other days (The Rem"a's own opinion). On Rosh Chodesh, we remove the Tefillin before the Mussaf prayers. Rem"a: The same applies to Chol Hamoed and specifically in a place where they say Kedushat Keter in Mussaf. However, the custom everywhere is to remove them before Mussaf [Beit Yosef].

The passage explains that halakha concerning practical observance does not deviate from complete truth, whereas aggadic statements—which are not halakha for practice—may be partially true; therefore one does not derive halakha from aggadic statements or challenge them as if they were halakha, since Torah has multiple dimensions but practical halakha admits only one.

The commentary synthesizes the practical laws of putting on tefillin while also recording customary and kabbalistic considerations, making it a particularly useful source for the interaction between normative halakhah and mystical practice.
Before winding - The reason is that since the blessing "l'haniach" is going on the head tefillin as well, as seen above in se'if katan 31, and certainly according to the Mechaber [as seen] above in se'if 5 where he holds that one makes only one blessing [on both the arm and head tefillin], therefore one should minimize the interruption in between [them] as much as possible. And [since] the winding [of the strap] around the arm is not mandated, it's better to delay it until after putting on the head tefillin. In Sefer Kavanos of the Ari"zal, it's written that he (the Ari"zal) would make the 7 windings around the arm first [before putting on the head tefillin],[but not the 3 windings around the finger], because he held that, a priori, the windings are also part of the mitzvah and therefore it is not an interruption. This is the prevalent practice. See in Teshuvas Mishkenos Yaakov, siman 28 - his opinion is also like our practice, to first wind around the arm [but according to him, it's] in order to secure it there, for otherwise it would not stay in place and is not called "keshira" (fastening), see there further. In Sefer Maamar Mordechai it's written that if one heard Kaddish or Kedusha after reciting the blessing on the arm tefillin, and if he were to make the 7 windings he wouldn't have enough time to put on the head tefillin and then answer [the Kaddish or Kedusha], he should put on the head tefillin before making the windings, if he is able to secure the arm tefillin enough so that it won't move from it's place. It's forbidden etc. - Meaning, even if one wanted to remove the head tefillin and hand tefillin both at the same time from the bag, for then he is not "passing over a mitzvah", even so one must be careful since there is a kabbalistic reason not to, as it's written in the Beit Yosef. And certainly to put down the hand tefillin and then remove the head tefillin is forbidden. Both standing - See in Magen Avraham who attempts to make a compromise [by saying] that putting on the hand tefillin should be done while seated, but the blessing should recited [first] while standing. But Eliyah Rabba in the name of Rasha"l in Responsa, siman 98, wrote that who is there greater than R. Shimshon of Kinon, who after learning all of Kabbalah would still pray like a young child, for one who cannot understand its' secrets properly will come to "uproot saplings" - therefore, the blessing and putting on of the tefillin should both be done standing. Biur HaGra demonstrates that even according to the Zohar it is permitted to put the hand tefillin on while standing. Therefore, one should not deviate from the [accepted] practice. Knesset HaGedolim wrote in K'lalei Haposkim that anywhere that the Kabbalah and Zohar are in disagreement with the Gemara and poskim, one should follow the Gemara and poskim. However, if the [opinion according to the] Kabbalah is more stringent, then one should be also be stringent. If [a halacha] is not mentioned in the Gemara and poskim, even though it's mentioned in Kabbalah, we can't force people to adopt that practice. A halacha which does not have an opposing view mentioned in the Gemara and poskim, one should follow the Kabbalah. Also, when there is an argument between the poskim, the [opinion mentioned in] Kabbalah should be the decisor.

When a halakhic fact from oral Torah (such as a halakha from Sinai or a ruling of the great court) becomes unclear to you, the court completes the tradition by instructing you, and whether that instruction is a derived conclusion based on the rules of Torah interpretation or a takkanah enacted for practical fulfillment of mitzvot, both hagada (received tradition) and hora'a (instruction/ruling) are binding obligations upon you.

The passage states that while courts had discretion to rule according to either of two halakhic paths, halakha is ultimately determined by customary practice; when the people followed a practice, it was not challenged, but established custom is then taught as binding law, and once halakha is fixed this way, it is interpreted textually—with divine support attending both the earthly and heavenly courts.
