What the sources say

The foundational statement in these sources is the tradition — cited by the Peri Tzadik (The Fifteenth of Av 6:1) in the name of Midrash Rabbah — that Mashiach was born on Tisha B'Av itself: at the very moment the Temple was destroyed, Israel turned to teshuvah, and from that teshuvah the spirit of Mashiach immediately emerged, so that the churban and the birth are not merely consecutive but causally linked.

The Jerusalem Talmud passage Jerusalem Talmud Berakhot 2:4 gives this idea its most vivid narrative form: an Arab hears the ox bellow at the moment the Temple is destroyed, and tells the Jewish plowman to unharness his plow — only for the ox to bellow a second time, at which the Arab declares that the redeemer of Israel has just been born, his name Menachem (Consoler).

Pesikta Rabbati 36 deepens the connection from the divine side: the Holy One tells the Mashiach that from the day Nevuchadnezzar destroyed the Temple and exiled Israel, He Himself has not entered His throne — and it is the Mashiach's willingness to bear suffering on Israel's behalf that is intertwined with that same moment of destruction.

Maamar HaGeulah (Chapter 8, 11:1) adds that since the destruction of the Temple, the pasuk 'he was wounded for our transgressions' applies to Mashiach, who has remained bound to the Shekhinah through the exile, sitting at the gates of Rome among the afflicted — so that his very existence since the churban is one of suffering alongside Israel rather than triumphant arrival.

Micah 5:1-2

Micah 5:1-2

Micah speaks of a ruler from Bethlehem and links the present distress of Israel with the future emergence of a redeemer, making it a classic text for messianic expectation arising from national suffering.

And you, O Bethlehem of Ephrath, Least among the clans of Judah, From you one shall come forth To rule Israel for Me— One whose origin is from of old, From ancient times. Truly, [God] will leave them [helpless] Until she who is to bear has borne; Then the rest of his kindred Shall return to the children of Israel.

Sulam on Zohar, Vayera 478:1

In sixty-six years the Messiah king will be revealed in the land of the Galilee as Messiah son of Joseph, with Galilee being Joseph's inheritance; when a star from the east swallows seven stars from the north, and a black flame hangs in the sky for sixty days, wars will arise in the world from the north, two kings will fall in these wars, all nations will gather against the daughter of Jacob to drive her from the world—concerning which time it is written "a time of trouble it is for Jacob, but from it he shall be saved"—and from this [salvation] the Messiah will be revealed.

Sulam on Zohar, Shemot 129

After twelve months, a light will be fixed between heaven and earth and will dwell in the Galilee—where Israel's exile began with the Assyrian exile—and the Messiah will be revealed from that light of a bird's nest, returning to his place; on that day the entire earth will tremble from end to end, and all the world will see that the Messiah-king has been revealed in the Galilee, but since children are not found then, the mother (the Shekhinah) will not take him, so the Messiah will be delayed another twelve months until her husband (Zeir Anpin) comes and raises her from the dust, as stated "I will raise up the fallen tabernacle of David.

According to one view, labor pains of mashiach's birth begin in the seventy-second year after the churban of the Beis Hamikdash (which is year 1272 after the destruction), and the redemption is born in the next two years; the passage then counters that before those seventy-two years are complete, two messiahs will be revealed in the world.

Jerusalem Talmud Berakhot 2:4

Rebbi Joshua ben Levi said, his name is Ẓemaḥ. Rebbi Yudan, the son of Rebbi Aivu, said his name is Menaḥem. Ḥanina the son of Rebbi Abbahu said: they have no disagreement since the numerical value of one is the numerical value of the other: Ẓemaḥ is equal to Menaḥem. Since Rebbi Yudan the son of Rebbi Aivu said, it happened to a Jew who was plowing in the valley of Arbel that his ox was bellowing. An Arab passed by and heard the bellowing of the ox. He said to him: Jew, Jew, unharness your ox, unharness your plow because the Temple was destroyed. The ox bellowed a second time. He said: Jew, Jew, harness your ox, fix your plow because King Messiah has been born. He said to him: What is his name? Menaḥem. He said to him: What is his father’s name? Ḥizqiah. He said to him: Where is he? He said to him: At the king’s palace in Bethlehem in Judea. He went and sold his ox and plow and made himself a vendor of baby linens. He went to towns and left towns until he came to that town. All the women bought from him but the mother of Menaḥem did not buy. He heard the women say: Menaḥem’s mother, Menaḥem’s mother, come and buy for your son! She said: I would rather strangle him like a hater of Israel because he was born on the day the Temple was destroyed. He said to her: I like him, because for him it was destroyed and for him it will be rebuilt. She said to him, I have no money. He said to her, that does not bother me, come and buy for him! If you have nothing with you today, I shall return another day and I will take it then. After some time he went up to that town and said to her: How is your baby doing? She said to him: After you had seen me there came storms and raised him and tore him from my hands. Rebbi Abun said: We do not need to learn from that Arab, is it not a full verse (Is. 10:35): “The Lebanon will fall through a noble one”? And the next verse is (11:1) “A sprout will come from the stem of Jesse.”

Rosh Hashanah 18b

Rosh Hashanah 18b:3

The Ninth of Av is obligatory for fasting because multiple calamities occurred on that day, including the destruction of both the First and Second Temples, the capture of Beitar, and the plowing over of Jerusalem.

The Gemara asks: If so, the Ninth of Av should also be like the other fast days, that sometimes it is observed and sometimes not, depending upon the wishes of the community at the time. Why does the mishna state that messengers go out for the month of Av? Rav Pappa said: The Ninth of Av is different, since the calamities that occurred on that day were multiplied. As the Master said: On the Ninth of Av the Temple was destroyed, both the first one and the second one; on this day the city of Beitar was captured; and on this day the city of Jerusalem was plowed over by the enemies of the Jewish people, as a sign that it would never be rebuilt. Consequently, the fast of the Ninth of Av is obligatory, and not optional like the other fasts. Messengers are consequently sent out so that people will know when to fast. “The fast of the fifth,” this is the Ninth of Av, on which the Temple of our Lord was burnt. And why does he call it the fast of the fifth? Because it falls in the fifth of the months. “The fast of the seventh,” this is the third of Tishrei, on which Gedaliah, son of Ahikam, was killed. And who killed him? Ishmael, son of Nethaniah, killed him (see II Kings 25:25; Jeremiah, chapter 41). The Sages established a fast to commemorate Gedaliah’s death to teach you that the death of the righteous is equivalent to the burning of the Temple of our Lord. And why did the prophet call it the fast of the seventh? Because Tishrei is the seventh of the months.

Sanhedrin 98a

Sanhedrin 98a:10

This sugya collects many statements about the coming of Mashiach, including discussions that connect redemption to a time of deepest exile and brokenness.

Rabbi Yoḥanan says: If you saw a generation whose wisdom and Torah study is steadily diminishing, await the coming of the Messiah, as it is stated: “And the afflicted people You will redeem” (II Samuel 22:28). Rabbi Yoḥanan says: If you saw a generation whose troubles inundate it like a river, await the coming of the Messiah, as it is stated: “When distress will come like a river that the breath of the Lord drives” (Isaiah 59:19). And juxtaposed to it is the verse: “And a redeemer will come to Zion” (Isaiah 59:20). And Rabbi Yoḥanan says: The son of David will come only in a generation that is entirely innocent, in which case they will be deserving of redemption, or in a generation that is entirely guilty, in which case there will be no alternative to redemption. He may come in a generation that is entirely innocent, as it is written: “And your people also shall be all righteous; they shall inherit the land forever” (Isaiah 60:21). He may come in a generation that is entirely guilty, as it is written: “And He saw that there was no man, and was astonished that there was no intercessor; therefore His arm brought salvation to Him, and His righteousness, it sustained Him” (Isaiah 59:16). And it is written: “For My own sake, for My own sake will I do it; for how should it be profaned? And My glory I will not give it to another” (Isaiah 48:11).

Sanhedrin 97b

Sanhedrin 97b:7

The Gemara discusses the signs and timetable of the redemption and the possibility of delayed or hidden arrival, a key source for linking Mashiach to historical crisis.

And the Messiah will come not in accordance with the opinion of Rabbi Akiva, who would interpret the verse: “Yet once, it is a little while, and I will shake the heavens and the earth” (Haggai 2:6), to mean that the redemption would transpire soon after the destruction of the Temple. § Rav says: All the ends of days that were calculated passed, and the matter depends only upon repentance and good deeds. When the Jewish people repent, they will be redeemed. And Shmuel says: It is sufficient for the mourner to endure in his mourning to bring about the coming of the Messiah. Even without repentance, they will be worthy of redemption due to the suffering they endured during the exile. The Gemara notes: This dispute is parallel to a dispute between tanna’im: Rabbi Eliezer says: If the Jewish people repent they are redeemed, and if not they are not redeemed. Rabbi Yehoshua said to him: If they do not repent, will they not be redeemed at all? Rather, the Holy One, Blessed be He, will establish a king for them whose decrees are as harsh as those issued by Haman, and the Jewish people will have no choice but to repent, and this will restore them to the right path.

Peri Tzadik, The Fifteenth of Av 6:1

Peri Tzadik, The Fifteenth of Av 6:1

When the Temple was destroyed on the Ninth of Av, Israel repented after having previously believed the Temple would not be destroyed, and from this repentance the Mashiach was immediately born, since in each generation there exists a soul worthy of being Mashiach if the generation were worthy, and the Mashiach's spirit then appears to that soul; the Fifteenth of Av marking the preparation for repentance from Israel's side.

The passage states that the Mashiach is unique in that since the destruction of the Beit HaMikdash, the verse "he was crushed for our iniquities" applies to him, and he remains constantly with the Shekhinah except for specific hours when he has activities above, spending the rest of his time sitting at the gate of Rome among the suffering ill.

Peri Tzadik, Chanukah 14:4

Peri Tzadik, Chanukah 14:4

The passage explains that Adar is the appropriate time for the arrival of Mashiach ben Yosef (who comes before Mashiach ben David), since Adar corresponds to Yosef from whom two tribes emerged, and Nisan is the time for Mashiach ben David's arrival since the redemption occurred in Nisan; it also notes that Chanukah serves as preparation for redemption, and cites a teaching that four craftsmen are involved in redemption: Mashiach ben David, Mashiach ben Yosef, Eliyahu, and the Kohen Tzedek.

Netzach Yisrael 4:2

Netzach Yisrael 4:2

The Second Temple was destroyed because of baseless hatred among Israel and their divided hearts, since the Temple represents the unity of Israel and the Divine Presence did not dwell in it as it did in the First Temple.

Maamar HaGeulah, Chapter 7 2:4

Evil that could have been completely eradicated through the daughter of Pharaoh instead remained in diminished form, regrew and strengthened until it destroyed the Temple, and the resulting exile lasted seventy years according to the power that the klipah received; but the darkness did not endure long before returning and obscuring the light completely, and they remained in that darkness until the Messiah of Righteousness arose to the throne.

Shenei Luchot HaBerit, Toldot Adam, Beit David:98

Rabbi Acha states that the Temple is destined to be rebuilt before the reign of the house of David, but because there is concern that a future court might not be as great in wisdom and number as the earlier courts and could overturn their decrees, and because it would be difficult to say that the court of Mashiach would not be greater than them, they were forced to say that the Temple will be rebuilt while the son of David has not yet come, and this might occur in the time of Mashiach ben Yosef.

Maamar HaGeulah, Chapter 7 3:2

The passage describes that when holiness alone rules, a great correction will occur—one comparable to what Adam could have accomplished at first—and the building that was not completed will be finished during all the days of mashiach; at the end of days there will be a great day of judgment to complete the union of all souls and all creation, after which all creation will remain entirely pure, all evil will perish and be destroyed, and from then onward the world will be built anew in a way that will endure forever.

Midrash Eichah ties the destruction of Jerusalem to the future consolation of Israel, often pairing mourning over the churban with hope for geulah.

Sefat Emet, Deuteronomy, Devarim:3

Sefat Emet, Deuteronomy, Devarim:3

The passage states that each generation that does not contribute to rebuilding the Beis Hamikdash through Torah and mitzvos is considered as if it destroyed it in that generation's time, since the merit of all generations accumulates toward redemption and the continuous process of rebuilding throughout exile, and similarly each individual's actions either assist or fail to assist in this construction.

The Gemara Yerushalmi (Yuma 1:1) states that any generation in which the Beis Hamikdash is not rebuilt is as if it has been destroyed in their days. This does not imply that earlier generations were unworthy or that the generation in which it will be rebuilt is superior. Rather, each generation must contribute through their Torah and mitzvos to the ongoing process of rebuilding the Beis Hamikdash, as reflected in the continuous prayer "Boneh Yerushalayim" (He who builds Jerusalem). Therefore, any generation that does not contribute at all to its rebuilding is as if it has destroyed it in their days. On an individual level, each person must recognize that their actions contribute to the rebuilding of the Beis Hamikdash. By accepting the yoke of Heaven and engaging in mitzvos, they assist in its construction, as "everything assists in the King's construction."

Peri Tzadik, The Fifteenth of Av 3:1

The passage argues that following the Churban, the abundance of Torah she-be'al peh developed through the Tannaim and Amoraim, and through this abundance of oral Torah wisdom the Jewish people will merit the ultimate perfection of the rebuilding of the second Beis Hamikdash, as those who study Mishnah will be redeemed through that merit.

Sefat Emet, Genesis, Vayeshev 13

Sefat Emet, Genesis, Vayeshev 13:4

The Midrash teaches that while the brothers were preoccupied with their distress, God was occupied with creating the light of Mashiach, which emerges through "absence of thought"—meaning final redemption comes through Divine salvation beyond human comprehension—and that both Mashiach ben Yosef (who begins redemption) and Mashiach ben David (who completes it) are necessary, with God gathering their good intentions to create the light of Mashiach despite the brothers' inability to fully actualize their plans.

The Midrash (Bereishis Rabbah 85:1) explains that while Yosef, Yaakov, and Reuven were in a state of mourning, Yehuda’s children were born, bringing about the light of Mashiach from Yehudah. Mashiach comes with the "absence of thought," meaning the final redemption must come from Hashem's salvation beyond human comprehension. This is demonstrated by the birth of Mashiach during a time of mourning. The brothers' argument with Yosef was for the sake of Heaven, evident from its endurance. This argument highlighted the existence of two Mashiachs: Mashiach ben Yosef and Mashiach ben David. Each brother believed in their perspective—either from Yosef or David. Mashiach ben Yosef begins the redemption, and Mashiach ben David completes it. First, Yosef was lost, then Yehudah's children were born in a hidden manner. Hashem, knowing their true intentions, took their good thoughts and created the light of Mashiach. The tribes form the foundation of the world, similar to the forefathers. This is alluded to in Shemone Esrei, with 12 middle blessings corresponding to the 12 tribes and the first 3 blessings to the forefathers. The 12 requests represent new energies Hashem brings daily, such as forgiveness, health, and parnassa. Yehuda parallels "Shomea Tefillah," representing King David's voice. Ultimately, the Kingdom belongs to Yehuda as we need Heaven's help, symbolized in "Shema Koleinu." This applies individually, as Mishlei 19:21 states, "Many thoughts are in a man’s heart, but Hashem’s plan endures." While one must plan and prepare, Hashem's help is essential, ensuring that intentions for the sake of Heaven lead to His enduring plan.
