What the sources say

The Torah obligation of tzitzit applies only to a garment with four or more corners, and the garment must be large enough to cover the head and most of the body of a child who walks about independently — the Rambam (Mishneh Torah, Tzitzit 3:1) sets this as the minimum shiur, and the Tur (OC 16) adds that an adult must not be embarrassed to wear it in the marketplace, so that both conditions — the child's coverage and adult social acceptability — must be satisfied together.

The Mishnah Berurah grounds the corner-count rules in drashah: Mishnah Berurah (10:2) explains that the Sifri derives 'four and not three' from the pasuk 'on the four corners of your garment,' while a garment with five or more corners is obligated because five includes four within it, though three does not — and the Shulchan Arukh HaRav (OC 10:1–8) develops the same reasoning, noting that the obligation on five-cornered garments follows from the surplus wording 'which you cover yourself.'

For a garment with more than four corners, tzitzit are attached to the four corners that are most distant from one another — the Shulchan Arukh (OC 10:1) rules this explicitly, adding that one may not simply fold the tallit and attach tzitzit to the fold-corners; rather, the four actual outermost corners must receive the tzitzit — and the Sifrei Devarim (234:2) makes clear that 'on four' limits the obligation to four corners, not eight.

Regarding a borrowed tallit, the Gemara establishes the foundational rule: Menachot (44a) and Chullin (110a) both record Rav Yehuda's ruling that a borrowed garment is exempt from tzitzit for the first thirty days, after which a rabbinic obligation attaches because it appears as the borrower's own — a rule codified by the Shulchan Arukh (OC 14:3), which further specifies that if the tallit was borrowed already fitted with tzitzit, the borrower recites the brachah immediately, and the Rema adds that interrupted borrowing periods do not combine toward the thirty days.

The Shulchan Arukh HaRav goes further in explaining why a brachah is recited at once on an already-tziytzeit borrowed tallit: the Shulchan Arukh HaRav (OC 14:5–8) reasons that since the lender clearly lent the tallit with the intent that the borrower fulfill the mitzva — and it is impossible to recite the obligatory brachah on a borrowed tallit unless ownership transfers — we treat the lender as having given it as a gift on condition of return.

Revavos Ephraim (2:114) rules, on our reading of the cited page, that the brachah over a tallit must be recited while holding it with the intention to wrap oneself in it, and not during the act of wrapping itself, since wrapping is not considered a preparatory act once the obligation has already taken effect — the wording 'to wrap oneself in tzitzit' governs the moment of the brachah.

Divrei Yatziv (OC 4) addresses, on our reading of the cited page, the question of whether tzitzit is a chovat gavra or a chovat tallit — a personal obligation or an obligation of the garment — a foundational distinction that bears on when and by whom the mitzva must be performed.

Shevet HaLevi (3:6) rules, on our reading of the cited page, that when a child wears a tallit that does not meet the required shiur, a brachah may not be recited over it, though for purposes of chinuch a child may be trained in the mitzva even without the full measure, with a disagreement noted among the poskim about whether the absence of the proper shiur alone prevents blessing-recitation.

Shevet HaLevi (7:6) addresses, on our reading of the cited page, the related question of which component of a composite garment — the outer layer or the lining — determines what material counts as the essential beged for purposes of which corners require tzitzit, with conflicting views surveyed among the Magen Avraham and others.

Responsa on this question

Revavos Ephraim (Revavos Ephraim 7:395)Revavos Ephraim rules that one who changes to a different four-cornered garment at night need not recite a blessing, since nighttime is not a time for tzitzis, and absent-mindedness occurs only when one removes the garment unintentionally and later dresses without remembering, whereas if one removes it intentionally to set it aside, this does not constitute the requisite inattention.

Menachot 44a

Menachot 44a:12

A borrowed tallis is exempt from the mitzva of tzitzit for the first thirty days; after that period it becomes obligated.

§ Rav Yehuda says: In the case of a borrowed cloak, for the first thirty days it is exempt from ritual fringes; from then on it is obligated. The Gemara notes: That distinction is also taught in a baraita: In the case of one who resides in a guesthouse [pundaki] in Eretz Yisrael, or one who rents a house outside of Eretz Yisrael, for the first thirty days he is exempt from the mitzva of mezuza; from then on he is obligated. But one who rents a house in Eretz Yisrael must affix a mezuza immediately, due to the settlement of Eretz Yisrael.

Chullin 110

Chullin 110:1

One who borrows a robe is exempt from the obligation of ritual fringes on it for the first thirty days of the borrowing.

Rav Ḥisda further saw that Rami bar Tamrei had not placed the threads of ritual fringes on his garment and said to him: What is the reason that you do not have the threads of ritual fringes? Rami bar Tamrei said to him: It is a borrowed robe, and Rav Yehuda said: With regard to a borrowed robe, during all of the first thirty days that one borrows it, one is exempt from performing the mitzva of ritual fringes with it.

Sifrei Bamidbar 115:1

The elders of Beit Shammai and Beit Hillel gathered and discussed whether tzitzis has a required measure, comparing it to the lulav; they derived from the word "gadilim" (threads) that one makes tzitzis from no fewer than three threads, with Beit Hillel holding this view and Beit Shammai maintaining that there are four wool threads and four of techeiles, the halacha following Beit Shammai.

The mitzvah of tzitzis requires threads to be made anew rather than extracted from the existing garment, must be attached to four corners rather than eight, applies only to a square garment (excluding various non-rectangular coverings), though Rabbi Eliezer ben Yaakov offers a dissenting view.

Bamidbar Rabbah 17:5

Bamidbar Rabbah 17:5

When one covers oneself with a tallis, the mitzvah of tzitzis applies; the tzitzis must be made as a new creation rather than extracted from existing threads of the garment, but the obligation is to bring white and tekeles threads and make them, which applies when tekeles is available—now that tekeles is hidden from us, we have only white; and the tzitzis must be placed on the corners of the garment, not in the middle.

One who borrows from his friend a טלית that does not have ציצית on it, he is exempt from putting ציצית on it for thirty days, as it is written "your covering/garment" and not of others. But after thirty days, one obligated, on a rabbinic level, [to put ציצית on it] because it looks like it is his. Rem"a: And if he returns it (the טלית) within 30 days and he takes/borrows the טלית again, [the days from the first and second borrowing] do not combine, rather you need to have thirty consecutive days (Nemukei Yoseph Hilchot Tzitzit). If one borrowed it when it [already] has ציצית, he should recite the blessing on it immediately. It is permissible to take his friend's טלית and to recite the blessing on it, as long as he folds it [when he is finished] if he found it folded. Rem"a: And the same law apply's regarding תפילין (Nemukei Yoseph in Perek Ha'sfina (Bava Batra Chapter 5)). But it is forbidden to learn from holy books of his friend without his knowledge, for we are concerned that he will tear them (ie. the pages in the book) while he is learning [from them] (Nimukei Yosef - Halachot Ketanot)

Mishnah Berurah 10

Mishnah Berurah 10:2

The Mishnah Berurah provides practical clarification of qualifying corners and unusual garment designs, including cases where the apparent corners may not be halakhically recognized.

Is exempt - It's explained in the verse... as it's written: "On the four corners of your garment" (Deuteronomy 22:12). And it's expounded in the Sifri as: "Four and not three". And [regarding] more than four, it's included from [the words] "which you cover yourself" (Deuteronomy 22:12). And the opposite cannot be said (ie. to expound the verse to mean "four and not five")... for included in five is four, but in three is not included four. And it's not necessarily five [corners], [rather] the same law applies to six and seven [corners]. Requires - And there are those that exempt it. Therefore, one should not make [a טלית] with five [corners] from the outset. And the Pri Megadim wrote that according to the ones who exempt it, the small טלית that we wear that has a hole for the neck, nevertheless, the majority of [the garment] is closed. However, if it happened that the majority of it was open, he should make a "collar"... like when the tailors make it a bit rounded. On four - And if he made five (ie. if he affixed five sets of ציצית strings), he transgresses [the prohibition of] "Do not add" (Deuteronomy 13:1). And if he cut off one of them (ie. one of the sets of ציצית strings after he affixed five), it is valid, as long as it leaves over the four distant corners with ציצית, as [will be explained] ahead.

Mishnah Berurah 16

Mishnah Berurah 16:2

The Mishnah Berurah explains the measurements and practical parameters of the tzitzit garment, including how the shiur is assessed in practice.

And then it is obligated in ציצית - [for] an adult who wears it; which excludes if it did not have the measurement [that covers] the head and the majority of a child's body, then everyone agrees that it is exempt [from needing ציצית], even if the adult goes out with it occasionally to the market. But if it's common among the people of that place that the men go out regularly to the market [wearing a small garment as mentioned above] and they are not embarrassed by it, it's seems from the words of the Ba"ch that it would be obligated in ציצית. See further in Biur Halacha. When the adult - [Meaning at least] 13 years old. To the market - Or to the doorway of his house [facing] the street. But if the adult is embarrassed to go out [wearing it] even occasionally to the market, it is not considered a covering, even if he wears it in his house. And there are those who argue on this and hold that you only need [to fulfill the condition of] it [being large enough] to cover the head and majority of the body of a minor. And the later rabbinic authorities agree that one should be stringent to not make a blessing on a טלית קטן, even if it's large enough to cover the head and majority of the body of a minor, if the adult would be embarrassed to go out with it occasionally to the market; for even though he would go out [like that], his intention is rendered irrelevant by the opinions of all other men. And regarding the measurement of "[enough to cover] his (ie. a child's) head and the majority of his body", it is written in Pri Ha'aretz in the name of Derech Chochma that the measurement is 3/4 of a cubit for it's length, and 1/2 a cubit for it's width. And the Machtzit Hashekel and Artzot Hachaim wrote on this that there is no basis for this in the Talmud, and specifically regarding the 1/2 a cubit width that he mentioned. And the custom of men of [proper] action is to be particular that there should be a cubit in the front and a cubit in the back, and the neck hole does not count for that measurement. And with a טלית קטן like that, one will not have any doubts and is able to recite the blessing on it. Nevertheless, one should not go less than 3/4 of a cubit for the length on each side, for otherwise there will be a concern for a blessing made in vain; for the later rabbinic authorities wrote that they measured and found that the measurement of "the head and the majority of the body of a child" is 1.5 cubits; and see further in Biur Halacha. And the custom of the Ashkenazim (ie. those Jews in Germany) who take a small piece of cloth, one in the front and one in the back, and they sew straps onto them [so that the straps rest on their shoulders], and they affix ציצית to them - they do not at all fulfill their obligation of ציצית with them; and besides the fact that they negate the commandment of ציצית, they are making a blessing in vain every day and are violating the commandment of "Do not take Hashem's Name in vain", and it is also forbidden for them to walk out with them on Shabbat, as was explained in siman 10 and 13 - see there further. Nevertheless, those who do make it like that should not make a blessing on it, rather they should make the blessing in the morning on their טלית גדול, and with that they may go out with [the טלית קטן] all day since they nevertheless had the intention with this in order to not negate the commandment of ציצית all day. But anyone who is G-d fearing should not rely on this at all, rather they should make [it out of] a real [complete] garment, each place according to their custom. And in some places, they have a custom that the garment which is called "kamizel" or "vest", it is open in the back and they place ציצית on it's 4 corners - fortunate are they, however they must be careful to make sure that the majority of it is open. And similarly, [regarding] the טלית קטן that they make in our country, they should be careful regarding this (ie. the majority should be open). And see further, above in siman 10, se'if 7 and 8, what we wrote there. The Ari"zal wrote [regarding] a טלית קטן, that it is better that it should not have sleeves. If one wore a טלית and it folded/bunched up a bit, as is common when wearing clothes, and after it folded it did not have the measurement of "the head and the majority of the body of a child": it's written in the Responsum of the Beit Yosef - siman 106, that since it's able to be unfolded, it's considered to be unfolded, even though it is not yet unfolded, and it therefore has the correct measurement; see there. And see as well in Bnei Chaya. A טלית that has [the measurement of] "the head and the majority of the body of a child", but by sewing it, it does not have that measurement [anymore]: it is exempt from ציצית. See there in siman 66. And so too wrote the Leket Hakemach.

Shulchan Arukh HaRav, Orach Chayim 22:1

When one purchases a tallis already fit to wear, he recites sheheḥeyanu at the time of purchase; but if he purchases fabric and makes garments from it, he does not recite sheheḥeyanu at purchase; rather, after fashioning the garments and attaching tzitzis to them, he recites sheheḥeyanu at the time of attaching the tzitzis to include that action in the blessing, unless he failed to bless then or the garment lacks four corners (in which case he recites sheheḥeyanu at the first wearing before the blessing for wrapping in tzitzis).

The Shagat Aryeh holds that one must recite the bracha over a tallis while holding it in hand with the intention to wrap oneself in it, not during the act of wrapping, since wrapping is not considered preparation for the mitzvah when the obligation of tzitzit has already taken effect, as we recite the bracha to wrap oneself in tzitzit.

Maamar Mordechai Limot HaChol 7:5

Maamar Mordechai Limot HaChol 7:5

Before reciting the blessing on tzitzis, one should complete all preparations (removing and arranging the garment) rather than handling it during the blessing itself, and should wrap one's head immediately upon finishing; the blessing is recited standing for both a large and small tallis, though if recited sitting one need not repeat it, except a sick person may recite and wrap while sitting; the Arizal's custom was to wrap the head with even a small tallis before lowering it to the body, and the blessing on it is "lehitatef betzitzis" like on a large tallis.

Maamar Mordechai Limot HaChol 7:60

Stolen threads spun for tzitzis and attached to a tallis are invalid; when purchasing tzitzis it is preferable to pay immediately rather than take them on credit, and if a thief sold the threads to another after the owner's despair and change of ownership, the tzitzis are valid though it is best to avoid using them—regarding a bracha, since opinions dispute whether a bracha should be recited and the halakha is to be lenient on doubtful brachos, one should not recite a bracha.

Maamar Mordechai Limot HaChol 7:9

If one spreads out a tallis without intending to wear it immediately or after a time, and then puts it back on with a small tallis already worn, no blessing is recited (though one may recite a blessing without the divine name and kingdom while intending those words mentally); on Yom Kippur when remaining in the synagogue all day, if there is a break between Musaf and Mincha prayers, one should remain wrapped in the tallis, and if one removes it—even while staying in the synagogue and going to rest—one recites a blessing upon putting it back on, but if one does not put it back on, one recites the blessing without the divine name and kingdom while intending those words mentally.

Maamar Mordechai Limot HaChol 7:77

A wool or grapevine-wool tallis with a torn corner-piece is repaired with silk thread, while a silk tallis is repaired with grapevine-wool or thin thread; worn-out tallis designated for mitzvah use may not be used disrespectfully, and one who is stringent to store them receives a blessing; a large tallis that has partially worn and is no longer suitable to wear may be converted into a small tallis, though some permit this even without wear and the prevailing practice does not follow this leniency.

One who wears a tallis under his garment at home and recites a beracha on it may recite a beracha on a larger tallis worn at synagogue because there is a break in concentration between the beracha at home and wearing the tallis at the synagogue after traveling, and there is also a break in concentration from reciting pesukim at his home's mezuzah and upon entering the synagogue; however, it is preferable to explicitly intend when blessing the tallis at home that one is not fulfilling the obligation of the beracha for the tallis at the synagogue.

Maamar Mordechai Limot HaChol 7:6

Maamar Mordechai Limot HaChol 7:6

If one errs in the blessing and recites it over a large tallis with the intention of fulfilling the mitzvah of tzitzit, he discharges his obligation after the fact and does not repeat the blessing, as this does not constitute an alteration from the mold established by the Sages; when multiple people wish to don their own tallisim, one may initially recite the blessing on behalf of all, the others answering amen and donning their own garments, provided there is no interruption during speech, and after the fact even if they did not answer amen, the blessing is effective if they intended to fulfill their obligation.

Maamar Mordechai Limot HaChol 7:44

Maamar Mordechai Limot HaChol 7:44

A garment worn at night requires tzitzis with a bracha if worn during the day when its normal usage is daytime or both day and night; if worn during the day when its normal usage is nighttime only, or worn at night when its normal usage is daytime or both day and night, tzitzis must be attached (as a stringency regarding Torah-level doubt) provided it is wool, but no bracha is recited (following the leniency that blessings resolve doubt).
