Deuteronomy – 'The eyes of God are upon it'

Deuteronomy 11:12

The Torah describes Eretz Yisrael as 'a land that God your Lord looks after; the eyes of God your Lord are always upon it, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year.' This verse establishes continuous divine attention and presence in the Land.

אֶ֕רֶץ אֲשֶׁר־יְהֹוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ דֹּרֵ֣שׁ אֹתָ֑הּ תָּמִ֗יד עֵינֵ֨י יְהֹוָ֤ה אֱלֹהֶ֙יךָ֙ בָּ֔הּ מֵֽרֵשִׁית֙ הַשָּׁנָ֔ה וְעַ֖ד אַחֲרִ֥ית שָׁנָֽה׃ {ס}

It is a land that the ETERNAL your God looks after, on which the ETERNAL your God always keeps an eye, from year’s beginning to year’s end.

Why it matters — A primary biblical source for the idea that Eretz Yisrael enjoys unique and constant divine oversight — a basis for the concept of the Shechinah's special dwelling in the Land.

Genesis – 'God is in this place'

Genesis 28:16

Yaakov awakens from his dream at Beit El and declares 'Surely God is in this place, and I did not know it,' followed by 'This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.' The Shechinah's special presence in the Land is established from the Patriarchs.

Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely GOD is present in this place, and I did not know it!”

Why it matters — A foundational Tanach text locating the divine Presence in a specific place in Eretz Yisrael, becoming the prototype for the Shechinah's connection to the Land.

Psalms – 'God has chosen Zion'

Psalms 132:13-14

'For God has chosen Zion; He has desired it for His dwelling place. This is My resting place forever; here I will dwell, for I have desired it.' Zion is declared God's chosen eternal dwelling.

For GOD has chosen Zion, desiring it for a seat. “This is my resting-place for all time; here I will dwell, for I desire it.

Why it matters — The clearest biblical declaration that the Shechinah finds its permanent resting place specifically in Zion/Eretz Yisrael.

Talmud Ketubot – Dwelling in Eretz Yisrael equals all mitzvot

Ketubot 110b

The Talmud states that dwelling in Eretz Yisrael is equivalent in weight to all the mitzvot of the Torah combined, and records that Sages uprooted themselves from Babylonia to immigrate to the Land solely on account of this teaching.

§ In relation to the basic point raised by the mishna concerning living in Eretz Yisrael, the Sages taught: A person should always reside in Eretz Yisrael, even in a city that is mostly populated by gentiles, and he should not reside outside of Eretz Yisrael, even in a city that is mostly populated by Jews. The reason is that anyone who resides in Eretz Yisrael is considered as one who has a God, and anyone who resides outside of Eretz Yisrael is considered as one who does not have a God. As it is stated: “To give to you the land of Canaan, to be your God” (Leviticus 25:38). The Gemara expresses surprise: And can it really be said that anyone who resides outside of Eretz Yisrael has no God? Rather, this comes to tell you that anyone who resides outside of Eretz Yisrael is considered as though he is engaged in idol worship. And so it says with regard to David: “For they have driven me out this day that I should not cleave to the inheritance of the Lord, saying: Go, serve other gods” (I Samuel 26:19). But who said to David: Go, serve other gods? Rather, this comes to tell you that anyone who resides outside of Eretz Yisrael is considered as though he is engaged in idol worship.

Why it matters — The Talmudic passage that frames Eretz Yisrael as the supreme religious environment, directly tied to the Shechinah's presence and the spiritual elevation the Land confers.

Kuzari – Eretz Yisrael as the 'heart' of the world

Kuzari 2:14

Rav Yehuda HaLevi argues that Eretz Yisrael is to the world what the heart is to the body — a unique place where prophecy is possible, where the divine overflow (the Shechinah) is especially accessible, and where the Jewish people can achieve their fullest spiritual expression.

The two latter had lived during the time of the first Temple, had seen the Shekhinah, through the influence of which each one who was duly prepared became of the elect, and able to prophesy. Philosophers and those whose souls and character are so harmonious that it can find its dwelling among them.

Why it matters — The Kuzari provides a systematic philosophical-theological argument for why the Shechinah is uniquely manifest in Eretz Yisrael, more than any other land.

Zohar – Eretz Yisrael as the body of the Shechinah

Zohar, Vayera 97b

The Zohar teaches that Eretz Yisrael is directly aligned with the Shechinah (the sefirah of Malkhut), and that the divine Presence rests uniquely within the physical and spiritual space of the Land. Exile is described as a separation of the Shechinah from Her place.

AND THERE APPEARED UNTO HIM. R. Abba said: ‘Before Abraham was circumcised he was, as it were, covered over, but as soon as he was circumcised he became completely exposed to the influence of the Shekinah, which thereupon rested on him in full and perfect measure. The words “as he sat in the tent door” picture the supernal world hovering over this lower world. When is this? “In the heat of the day”, that is, at a period when a certain Zaddik (righteous one) feels a desire to repose therein.

Why it matters — A central Kabbalistic formulation identifying the Land of Israel with the sefirah of Malkhut/Shechinah, grounding the concept metaphysically.

Nefesh HaChayim – The Shechinah and human action in the Land

Nefesh HaChayim, Gate I 1:4

R. Chaim of Volozhin teaches that human actions — especially Torah study and mitzvot — literally affect the supernal worlds and the state of the Shechinah. Performing mitzvot in Eretz Yisrael has unique cosmic impact because the Land is the direct conduit to the Shechinah's domain.

And so this is what is meant by tzellem: that the one resembles the other in some fashion.

Why it matters — Links the concept of the Shechinah in Eretz Yisrael to human spiritual responsibility and the impact of Torah observance in the Land.
